The story of India is one of profound and continuous change. It has been shaped by the dynamic of migration, conflict, mixing, coexistence, and cooperation. In this ten-part web series, Namit Arora tells the story of Indians and our civilization by exploring some of our greatest historical sites, most of which were lost to memory and were dug out by archaeologists. He will also focus on ancient and medieval foreign travellers whose idiosyncratic accounts conceal surprising insights about us Indians. All along, Arora surveys India’s long and exciting churn of cultural ideas, beliefs, and values-some that still shape us today, and others that have been lost forever. The series mostly mirrors-and often extends-the contents of his book, Indians: A Brief History of a Civilization. Bibliography appears below.
    Episode 1: The Harappans
The ruins of the Harappan (aka Indus Valley) Civilization were unearthed a mere hundred years ago. And what a discovery it was! It greatly expanded India's civilizational past. The Harappans built the first cities in the Indian Subcontinent and a material culture that included advanced urban design, city-wide sanitation, and the first indoor toilets in the world. In this episode, Namit Arora explores its mature period, 2600-1900 BCE, at sites across western India and Pakistan. He compares it with other Bronze Age civilizations, in Mesopotamia and Egypt, and considers what distinguishes the Harappans from others-such as a much flatter social class hierarchy, and no clear evidence of temples, priests, big statues, palaces, weapons of war, or standing armies.
He looks at Harappan lifestyles and the stories that emerge from surviving artifacts: pottery, seals, figurines, toys, jewellery, sartorial fashions, social organization, dietary norms and discusses their metallurgy, tools, textiles, ships, trade, and burial customs. Their monumental work was the city itself, a marvel of engineering. In the excavated city of Dholavira in Gujarat, the narrator wanders its streets and homes laid out on a grid-like plan and looks at their achievements in water harvesting, storage, and drainage systems, as well as what may be the first stadium anywhere in the world! Arora also examines the languages the Harappans likely spoke, their undeciphered script, theories about their demise, and how their legacy still shapes us today.

Tamil Literature Sangam Literature Three Sangams wrote poems and developed the Tamil language. Names of those three Sangams.
      1.)First Association 2.)Second Association 3.) Third Association.
Sangha literature is reorganized and written between 600 BC and 1300 AD. 1.) Poems of the First Sangam relate to events before 6000 BC. 2.) Poems of the Second Sangam relate to events which took place before 2500 BC. Says it like a song. 3.) The hymns of the Third Sangam relate events from 800 BC to 1200 AD.
The following are not mentioned in any literature in India. The following has been said in only one literature and that is Sangam literature only. Apartment buildings, Sewerage, Bricks, Forts, Education, Straight roads, Seals, What creatures were around the Indus Valley?, How many types of trees were around the Indus Valley?, What kind of clothes did the people of the Indus Valley wear?, What were their foods?, People of the Indus Valley Literature is one that can tell about daily life and many more things. It is Sangam literature.
Indus Valley has more than 2100 Sangam literary town names. These names date back to 5000 BC..the evidence is journey of civilization indus to vaigai book.latitude and longitude are given in this book..the names of this town are only in two areas. One is in Indus Valley in Pakistan and the other is in Tamil Nadu in India..Indus Valley has more Sanga Literary town names than Tamil Nadu..
As Tamil language is very ancient it has changed in every period. Tamil language has changed more than 15 times so its ancient form is not readable now. The alphabet of the Tamil language can be read twelve times, but its primitive form cannot be read. But the Aryans destroyed the source of it...Sanskrit was created by the Tamils themselves. The meaning of Sanskirudam is not even in Rigveda. That meaning is 'Samaikka patta kirudam '. If so, it is a 'Samaikka patta language'. English meaning is cooked language..Created with Tamil grammar and words from literature of many languages..
Everyone explores Indus Valley north and east of India there is no evidence there. But they don't want to explore south of India and places around Indian ocean..why India doesn't allow it..

Just watched first episode as someone told me about this series. But though well presented, information is not backed by research.
There was no invasion, migration from central asia. Vedic culture was developed by indeginious people. DNA evidence from skeletons of Rakhigadhi analysed by Ancient DNA Birbal Sahni Institute, Lucknow clearly establishes this fact with minor Irani trace.

I approached the series with a lot of hesitation. But at the end it proved to be informative. The pre-Vedic civilization is clearly Dravidian as proved by John Marshall. The current day Saffron band is trying to name it as Sindhu-Saraswati Vedic civilization.

    • @sathyansundar
      @sathyansundar 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@keshavtyagi948 With all due respects, I disagree. Looks like you haven't analyzed the series and its contents thoroughly. Sanskrit itself is a product of religious syncretism that happened between the Vedic Brahmanic religion and the earlier faiths. Being a chantic language Sanskrit took its written form from the Devanagiri style much later in 6th CE. Thamizh established itself long before that.
According to C. Annadurai, the former CM of Tamil Nadu....
The etymology of the name Dravidam is very simple. Dravidam = Thee + Ra+ Vai +tam or Thee + Ra+ vidam. Vidam or idam means the place or the land. Thee + ra denotes the ‘Athee ‘[primordial fire] and the sun respectively. Hence Dravidam means the land of people who were the worshipers of Thee + Ra [thirai-- sky]] or whose ancestors were from sky or Thee+ Ra. It could be Thiru vidam , the land of Thiru, the ‘ wealthy land ‘ . Dravidians have the prefix ‘Thiru ‘ before their names. For example Thiru . k. Ramasmy ; The names of the places also have Thiru . For example; Chira palli is called as Thiru-chirappalli; Centhur is called as Thiru centhur. Presently Thiru means ‘respectable ‘ [Sanskrit equivalent word is ‘Sri ‘ and it is the corrupted form of the Tamil word Thiri-- Thee+ re, feminine [ Sthiri] form of Thee+ Ra; It is equivalent to' Mister ‘]. The original meaning of Thiru is Thee+ Ra or Thiraiyan . Alternatively, Dravidam means the land of Thirayan, the sea farers ‘--the ruler of the sea . Thiraiyan could also means' the ruler of the sky ‘. ‘Thiru' could also be originated from ‘ Theeran' or ‘Dheeran'.
‘Thiruvadirai' is one of the stars in the 27 cosmic constelllation.
      I hope this helps

Cotton textiles are not "spun on looms." Spinning is how the fibre from cotton bolls is made into threads that are entered on a loom for weaving. The preparation of fibre and spinning are separate processes by hand or with tools esp spindles, tools to manage and measure threads, etc.

Nomoskaar, adab arz hai, hello :-)
Having watched the first two episodes that have been released thus far, on the one hand i feel as if i have gone back to school after many a years for a much-needed relook at the history of our Subcontinent as it has been down the centuries and in a way at my own past stretching back several thousands of years, into times that my sociocultural memory can't help me remember any longer as i go about my daily life...and on the other hand - on the basis of that very feeling - that this series should turn out to be an essential viewing for us all living in today's supercharged and thus chaotic sociopolitical climate in India, putting everything into perspective through the eyes of history, which should calm down us all, phew!
i therefore send my warm congratulations and compliments to everyone involved in coming up with this wonderful and well-timed initiative - thank you.
And looking forward to watching the rest of the episodes; dhonyobaad, shukriya.

I've disliked and found Indian history the most difficult for it's innumerable dates and names in the vast canon of Indian history which has to be very accurate for board examination. But I didn't feel the same with World History or British History, American History and European history during my College years and I enjoyed reading even my reference book lists. When I watched these episodes you seem to clearly read my mind that I faced during my school days. Watching this just revives my interest in Indian history.
Our centralized examination system and competitive examinations are really restraining and ruining the students from gaining access to scholarly books to read, quest and find higher knowledge.

Thanks. Based on sound history which itself has become rare in India today. Just came back from British museum and kind of in awe. Was just thinking of IVC when I was going through the early Egypt ( the carnelian beads and lapis lajuli- must be from ivc( what I have read somewhere). Know so much about Egypt but so little about IVC.
It’s unfortunate that we don’t have a Rosetta Stone for harappan language.
Along with linguistics can you please also discuss population genetics of IVC and early Indians a bit. There’s been so many genetic studies do with so conclusive results.
