You should definitely check out Chaap Tilak by Abida Parveen and Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, Abida Parveen is just a living legend there is no one else like her, she just puts you in trance and touches your soul like no other, she is for female singer in Sufi music what Nusrat was for male singing in Qawali.

I saw Rahat first time when he was ten years old and came to Yorkshire in UK accompanying his uncles and father. That was when he was very young but look what he turned out to be. I have seen Nusrat and group many times until 1996 and Rahat a couple of times too but I prefer Sabri Brothers for there faithful adherence to the purity of qawwali music whereas Nusrat and his uncle became pop singers in my opinion.

Buckley wrote liner notes to one of his albums and recorded one of his songs. Eddie Vedder (of Pearl Jam) collaborated with Ali Khan in ‘95. I’m glad his nephew is carrying on the tradition.

Well, he does come from a multi-generational family tradition, he probably was trained at home or in a family run studio. . The scat is pure Qawwali, as I understand it as a casual listener. You might want to listen to The Nooran Sisters, who've broken a bunch of rules but sing very traditional qawalli. They were fortunate in having a father who would teach girls. They're also great fun to watch as they've developed an ecstatic dance performed seated cross legged on the floor. Hair does get whipped, you'll love it Maggie.
Great reaction Maggie. I am really enchanted by the music coming out from Pakistan. One of my real favourites is "Mundari" Coke Studio Pakistan by Ustaad Naseer-ud-din Saami. Lyrically minimalistic but man can play with different notes, the likes of which I have yet to witness in other styles of singing anywhere. I was blessed to have spent a decade living in the Middle East and the had opportunity to listen to some really inspirational music from Pakistan and India. This earlier part sounds like a mix of crooner jazz, mariachi and Marty Robbins style country music to me for some reason. The ending section though is in a style I don't think I have heard before. Very well done. Might need to check out more of this myself.

The crazy part at the end is when he's singing solfege. Music systems in my part of the world (South Asia) use the movable Do system...he ends on the Tonic (Do or Sa). He's not saying OMG 😂😂. He used our solfege for La Fa Mi (Dha Ma Ga) 😂😂

Well Rahat is just warming up in this one so that he doesn't set too high a bar for the co singer (no discredit intended, she is an awesome singer). If you want to hear him really fly (yes hear him fly 😉) then listen to Chhap Tilak by Abida Parveen (another huge living legend) and Rahat Fateh Ali from cone studio season 7. There are many many more that you should listen to like "Naina mooray" from Coke studio season 10 by Javed Bashir, Akber Ali and Amir Zaki.

Indian/Pakistan classical have many elements not just the western tonic solfa Do-re-mi-fa-so-la-ti(which is Sa-re-ga-ma-pa-na-dhi.. in Indian classical) and that scathing is basically playing with the Sa-re-ga-ma ....in different scales (or Sargam) :)

Well Rahat is just warming up in this one so that he doesn't set too high a bar for the co singer (no discredit intended, she is an awesome singer). If you want to hear him really fly (yes hear him fly 😉) then listen to Chhap Tilak by Abida Parveen (another huge living legend) and Rahat Fateh Ali from cone studio season 7. There are many many more that you should listen to like "Naina mooray" from Coke studio season 10 by Javed Bashir, Akber Ali and Amir Zaki.
