I am a Christian and I can't drink because I'm an alcoholic. And I've always said if you can drink responsibly go for it it's nothing wrong with it unless of course you're like me then it's a major league issue.

Yeah, for some it's an issue due to addiction. I think that the true meaning of the "If your hand causes you to sin, cut it off" line in the bible. If you cannot restrain yourself around something, it is best to avoid, or cut it out entirely.
However, that would require people to understand that virtue is most often measured in moderations not excesses. (in fact it is Sin that is most often measured excesses)

Yes, anyone who is in risk of being addicted to something is best to avoid it. Just as sex addicts should stay away from sex or at least try to have a healthier approach to it.
Most Christians I know forbid alcohol as if it is a Biblical absolute or a commandment from God, yet pick or choose other Scriptures to justify certain things they may like to do or to ignore.
The whole 'discussion' thing with Christians puts me off their religion as they are always only so 'right' with lack of humility or compassion, which were qualities of the true Yeshua ("Jesus").

As a Christian who drinks (though not excessively) I just wanted to say thank you for this video. We need to honor each other's convictions, instead of trying to twist The Bible to claim that convictions are absolutes and what is not a sin is a sin or vice versa. In general, we need to let the text of The Bible speak for itself, instead of making it say what we think it should. This applies to a ton of things, not just the conversation around alcohol.

Exactly, the main issue of drinking wine & alcohol is not a Sin, drinking to much of it and getting Drunk it is a Sin. But we SIN daily , it's not excuse but it what it is. That's why we much Repent Daily for our own Sins. And keep it moving forward.

Good for you to know your limits. Some people have higher levels of alcohol tolerance than others. I think the Bible is pretty clear that drinking in moderation (like eating in moderation) isn't sinful, but like you, I also know that my family generally has never handled any amount of alcohol well, hence why I also abstain.

    • @jjjsalang
      @jjjsalang 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

It was good you did that. Drinking alcohol is not sinful, but you also realized that it might be too tempting for you personally. So one Christian may abstain from alcohol to honor God, while another Christian can drink alcohol (in moderation, without drunkeness) and give thanks to God.
      Romans 14:6
"[6] The one who observes the day, observes it in honor of the Lord. The one who eats, eats in honor of the Lord, since he gives thanks to God, while the one who abstains, abstains in honor of the Lord and gives thanks to God. (ESV)"
      Also, Romans 14:3
[3] Let not the one who eats despise the one who abstains, and let not the one who abstains pass judgment on the one who eats, for God has welcomed him. (ESV)

As a Baptist I don’t think it’s a sin, and I don’t care if people drink… but I can elucidate on the reasons some do think it’s a sin. 1) American culture has no self-control when it comes to alcohol, so we want to stay away from all appearances of evil, 2) drunkenness is a vice that’s very easy to fall into, 3) high alcohol content in many drinks makes it easy to get drunk, 4) culturally and practically, there’s really no reason to drink it because we have refrigeration.

This is not an issue for Catholics. There are monastery's where one of the main activities for the monks outside prayer is to make wine or beer. There is even a 2016 book, "Pint's with Aquinas," that imagines the author sitting down over a pint to discuss various doctrines with the 'Angelic Doctor'.
This idea that Christians cannot drink is mostly just a dry and often hypocritical moralism. Now, in some cases, such as the case of people who had trouble with excess drinking, than giving up drink altogether may be necessary for their spiritual development. But it is certainly not necessary for all Christians.
In C.S. Lewis's works teetotalism is often associated with the 'bad guys' if my memory serves...right?

They often claim that Daniel and John the Baptist were vegetarians and that the "locusts" John ate were actually carob beans. The Greek word, however, always refers to an insect, and in the case of Daniel, it's clear from Daniel 10: 3 that he ate meat. The KJV describes Daniel abstaining from "meat" in the first chapter and being healthy, but in those days "meat" was sometimes used as a generic term for any food (meanwhile, the KJV says "flesh" in Daniel 10: 3, making it clear that this was meat.) The reason Daniel didn't eat the king's food is because it had been offered to the pagan gods of the Babylonians and in many cases was not kosher, which would have made him ceremonially unclean.

I don't know if distillation was carried out "back then" or not, but the "strength" or potency of "strong drink" described by the Bible I would say would match the distilled drinks of today, whether it was achieved by distillation or not. The emphasis on "strong" applies to both.

Honestly this brings up so much contention, when the Bible is very clear on the consumption of alcohol. Simply put, yes drinking alcohol is fine in moderation and so long as you aren't drinking to get drunk. The Bible states that we should keep our wits about us and if alcohol can interfere with our judgement, then we shouldn't be drinking to get drunk. Rather we should be using alcohol medicinally not recreationally
Now I will also say this. The Bible also states that we shouldn't do something that makes us feel condemned. So if drinking makes you feel bad about yourself, or you think another Christian will think negatively toward you then you probably shouldn't drink. Condemnation isn't of God, but of Satan.

Most preachers that condemn drunks are often oversized gluttons (with occasional exceptions). Funny how many of them don't feel condemned. The point is, we should read Scripture and examine ourselves with honesty.

I’ve observed Fundamentalist Baptists, Holiness Pentecostals, as well as certain ethnic Protestant churches believing this way. My theory is that many such church communities were either originally planted by missionaries who believed this way or it sprung up in cultures where alcoholism was a common problem & this belief came about as an over correction to confront it. Paul tells us in scripture that different Christians will have different convictions & we must respect that. If an individual Christian thinks it’s a sin for himself/herself to consume alcohol, don’t force them to drink. The problem becomes when you force your personal convictions onto all other Christians. Unfortunately though, in my experience, many such Christians don’t have a category for someone who drinks without getting drunk. In their minds you either abstain or are an alcoholic, there’s no middle. So in their worldview they have to explain away Jesus drinking, it just doesn’t fit in their black & white paradigm.

As a Pastor, I spend plenty of time with Christians who drink. Most of them end up drinking too much or drinking with people they shouldn't have. Just something I notice. Sure their are still some good Catholic priests, but I am not sure the Catholic church has any kind of special authority to speak of on such subjects.

@@ceasedesist9676 I don't know, I grew up Methodist and have little issue with the teachings of John Wesley even if I am not always fond of the way the institution acts.
I take no issue with Protestantism, I'd argue I even lean Protestant. I think my big issue has more to do with the manner in which we cling to these institutions as if they are more important than the teachings and the meaning behind those teachings. Jesus made Peter the rock, but I think that has more to do with how he lead the early apostles to spread the faith than with any institution which claims to have authority over the souls of men.
If anything I'd argue I am a Christian first before ought else. I go wherever I feel God takes me, and try to understand as many readings of the bible and it's doctrine as possible, and act according to my conscious. As I feel ultimately that is the only way we can even come close to a genuine and honest understanding of scripture.
That being said I do recognize the importance of ritual and tradition, even If I am not explicitly attached to any given institution, and often worry that such traditions can devolve into idolatry.

    • @ceasedesist9676
      @ceasedesist9676 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@patrickbuckley7259 Although I agree with the sentiment I will have to note that with western and eastern christianity the idea of the church differs. Although eastern christianity considers the church universal they would never say that out of the church = no salvation in the organizational sense. Eastern Christianity also does not pronounce judgement on one's salvation, concept of something like a reprobate that can be identified is not a thing. If you ask them will you be saved they'll just ask, "Do you believe and trust the promise of Christ upon death? If you do, then why worry, keep the faith and God will do the rest." (Paraphrasing)
Furthermore easterners don't have one pope, they have multiple and call them patriarchs instead. All patriarchs are autonomous and independent but do recognize one another's churches as one, holy, catholic and apostolic. Furthermore spiritually a patriarch has equal authority to a normal or even auxilliary bishop. It's not a pyramid in the east, ecumenical councils treat the vote of every bishop as the same regardless.
If you're struggling about it you might wanna read the early church fathers and pray about it. Their justification of the church by tradition is defended scripturally by them, by the word of church fathers and the fact that all except for protestant churches can trace themselves to this one universal church system. Not to press further but don't you think it's odd that it took 1500 years for the concept of a non-universal church to take hold despite the fact that schisms in circa 431 AD (Nestorian/Assyrian Schism), 451 AD (Oriental Orthodox Schism) and 1054 AD (Roman Catholic/Eastern Orthodox Schism) did not change the universal church doctrine in the breakaways.

Then purchase oxen, sheep, wine and strong drink. Strong drink and wine were mentioned in vs26 but the passage simply says that they must eat Before God After they purchased what was listed in 26. The reason why the very passage in vs26 simply says that they can "...eat..." and not "eat and drink" is simply because strong drink was mentioned. It was only used for offering see Numbers28:7, and all strong drink offerings were not drank but were to be poured down in the Holy Place As is indicated in Numbers 28:7. The reason why they would purchase strong drink for offering and tithe is because unfermented wine wasn't usually readily available like how fermented wine was.

As I've stated before, I was raised Seventh-day Adventist, and they have traditionally taught that drinking alcohol in any quantity is sinful and that Jesus turned water into grape juice instead of actual wine. I have also heard many Adventists say that it's blasphemous to use wine instead of grape juice for communion because it's fermented (which they equate to "leavened.") The historical context you presented clearly demonstrates that this is bunk, especially given that there was no refrigeration, pasteurization, etc. to prevent fermentation from occurring. I hope you will do a video some time on jewelry, because that's another issue where SDAs seem to twist Bible verses out of context to say that it prohibits it (Ezekiel 16: 11 is a good verse refuting that IMO).
All this said, I still choose not to drink at all (despite being legal age), not because I think it's a sin to drink in moderation but because I have a long family history of alcoholism, and most of my immediate family are also teetotalers for the same reason. (Hence why I would personally prefer grape juice for communion instead of wine, even though I don't think there's any biblical basis for condemning the use of wine for it.) Where other people drink beer, I usually drink Coke or Pepsi or some other soft drink, or maybe a non-sparkling beverage. And where other people drink wine, I just drink grape or apple juice. I guess sugary beverages are the closest thing I've ever had to a vice.

They knew many ways to preserve grape juice. Jesus talks about preserving the new wine (grape juice). Jesus is the new wine of the covenant. The "cup of blessing" as opposed to the "wine of Sodom" and the "cup of devils".

Thanks for this good video. This has always been my interpretation too. I love a cold beer with my dad or wife or mother-in-law.
It made me think though. The main problem about alcohol abuse (the reason it is sinful) is not the effects, it's the abuse in itself.
BUT because the effects are often so bad and obvious it stands out.
But this has the adverse effect of making abuse/addiction/overindulgence of other things be overlooked. And it makes people think like "well, excessive consumption/use/focus of XYZ has no drastic effect/impact, so it's okay."
And I think we all have areas where we indulge/focus too much on something such that even if it's not having obvious effects in the world, it takes take/energy away from more important things, it causes imbalance in life, it takes focus off God, it has internal/mental/emotional effects or it hurts just the people closest to us in maybe gradual, subtle ways.
In a way, the drastic effects of alcohol are a "blessing" (and I in no way mean to downplay how terribly some people have been hurt by alcoholics) in that they help us identify when there is overuse.

Every molecule of alcohol is damaging your body.
6 times we are specifically told to be sober. And the Greek word "nepho is used which mean to abstain from poisoning ourselves. Alcohol destroys many millions of lives; it's not a minor issue.

Alcohol can kill or completely ruin someone. Self control is the key. If you can’t control your consumption, then don’t drink. As a Christian, following conviction is my greatest advice. God allows it in small amounts. It’s the gluttony of it that’s a sin. Even my dad who is a Baptist minister (and doesn’t drink) will attest to this fact. If you’re going to have (a drink or two) be mindful of the Spirit, and do it with discretion. Be blessed and may God guide each of our steps with joy and discretion. Nothing wrong with a small amount! Nothing wrong with abstaining for the sake of conviction.

I have only quit cigarettes a couple months ago after being saved, so I am staying away from alcohol simply to avoid further increasing my cravings,
praise Jesus for helping me through!
But if you can drink responsibly, more power to you!

Doesn't say Jesus was drinking alcoholic wine. Alcoholic wine is clearly condemned. The cup of the Lord is the "cup of blessing" as opposed to the "cup of devils".
25Verily I say unto you, I will drink no more of the fruit of the vine, until that day that I drink it new in the kingdom of God.
The new wine is grape juice. If you put grape juice into old containers that are contaminated with yeast, then the grape juice ferments and breaks the bottles.
7Neither do men put new wine into old bottles: else the bottles break, and the wine runneth out, and the bottles perish: but they put new wine into new bottles, and both are preserved
So shall thy barns be filled with plenty, and thy presses shall burst out with new wine. Prov 3:10

I’ve given this much thought and study as a recovery counsellor and yes you can drink but not so much as anybody would even know you’d had a drink. If you’re too drunk to drive a car then you’re too drunk to drive a soul and have sinned and shouldn’t drink at all.

I'm a Christian, I know about these things over alcohol for while, although I don't drink it because of the consequences that excess brought to my family. So I have chosen to not follow the same steps as my relatives did.

Just like any substance, as long as you use it responsibly and you’re not abusing it, there’s nothing sinful about it.

So just watching a little pornography is ok then? Obviously not, so why is alcohol any different

@@gianlukeakins6162 I’m not sure if you are aware, but watching porn and putting substances in our bodies are two different things. Do you want to just discuss why drinking small amounts of alcohol is ok, or drugs in general? As far as alcohol, There are known health benefits to consuming small amounts in moderation. It’s when you begin to indulge and abuse it that it becomes harmful. You can say it’s wrong all you want but we will have to agree to disagree and I don’t even drink alcohol. Jesus literally turned water into wine for people to drink. Was he wrong for doing that?
