I would like to see your skills video also, I was pretty good in the late 80’s and early 90’s but was mostly self taught. Growing up in central BC we didn’t get the experts like in bigger cities and of course we didn’t have TH-cam either 😮.
      Love your videos

Hey Quinn - you really took me back in time with this one. My first real engineering job was as the only electronic engineer at a company called Displays Inc. from 1987 to 1993. We made DC plasma displays, and Williams was one of our largest customers. That dot matrix display may be one of ours, but we had a competitor, Cherry, that also made many of those. I don't know if there are any identifying marks on the display, but we had a unique way of doing the gas fill on them that gave a totally flat front and back glass. Cherry filled theirs through a glass nipple on the cathode (back) glass that remained after it was melted and twisted off. We did ours hundreds at a time in a gas vacuum/gas chamber oven, with a little gap in the edge seal with a low melt point glass sliver to seal it up. I designed the drive electronics and the test and aging systems that we used in the factory in Lewistown, Pennsylvania. The DC plasma technology's time passed as other display methods improved, and we folded up shop in '93. The company right across the street took me in and I've been designing ultrasonic flaw detectors and thickness gauges ever since.

Dig around for old telephony films/videos as well as western electric, bell core, nortel, and AT&T standards and practices documentation they are generally very good in explaining how to do things which very often can be translated into doing lots of other things as long as you let your mind wander if you know what I mean

I love pinballs, which suggests a much mis-spent youth, and have always wanted one for the rec room. I always enjoyed watching the repair guy work on them which ended in his treating us to a few freebies. So much so, that my last visit to Vegas included a day at the pinball arcade of fame, armed with a large bag of quarters (childhood fantasy fulfilled).
Enjoyed the video Quinn, take care, cheers!

We had the same machine in the office when I worked for a trendy tech company in the noughties. I spent many hours trying to maintain and repair it, and vastly more playing it despite my weak skills. I never got on top of the power supply issues though, which didn't get fixed until I'd moved on to another job.
So much nostalgia watching you play!

"They are made to be worked on" Indeed. I was a route mover for an amusement company in the Twin Cities who had to occasionally service machines (especially on Saturday rotations) If you need to work on them don't be afraid! I was paid to move heavy objects but even I could effect repairs on most pins. Have service mode will travel. For folks who don't know, if you are not on free play and you see the display for the number of credits currently in the machine, look to the lower right of the display digit. If there is a dot, it means you have something that needs to be serviced. For example if you see "credits 0." its time to check that service mode and run a test! 90% of the time it was just a lightbulb that had gone out, but being told which one it was saved a lot of time vs having to find it by sight. Thanks for the video!

I haven't played pinball since the early eighties, but I lived on such machines in the seventies. Seldom seen the insides, really enjoyed watching you beeline straight to the problem and provide an elegant repair. I worked on avionics in the Marines, 76-97, similar harnesses, not near as much room to work. That cable repair wasn't much different than what I did forty years ago. I really enjoyed the short bit of "sprocket play". Thanks!

No actually I don’t. I grew up in country Australia. There WERE no pinball machines and we never went to the big towns where they were because towns were fucking boring. No sheep no cattle no dogs no horses to ride no creeks to swim in no guns to shoot. You can take your cities and your large towns and stick them where the monkey hid the macadamias. I still live in a small country town and to this day I’ve never even played a computer game. I have a workshop where I build things instead of mindlessly staring at a screen.

She does quite well in teaching. A bit of a natural there I think. The one advantage that she has over so many is that she is not afraid to look a bit silly or fun. Back when I taught AutoCad, I used that to keep the people engaged. Otherwise, things can get so dry so very fast.
