Helping Dogs Deal with Fear and Phobias - Dog Training & Behavior

  • Dogs may often have unnatural fears and phobias that we can't understand. This video deals with helping dogs to adjust and get through their phobias in a fair manner.
    These fears can be for strange things such as people, being touched or things in their environment. I've had clients who's dogs spook over bicycles, sounds, sights and just about everything else.
    In this video I show how my own dog, Goofy, had an issue with balloons. I found this out when we were walking past a store that was just opening and they had a bunch of balloons outside. He freaked out and wouldn't go anywhere near them.
    The next day we began this program that is shown in the video. Within 5 sessions Goofy was able to walk by and accept balloons without any issue.

    This goes for the human race as much as for dogs.The only way to overcome our fears is to rationally understand that there is no real threat in the situation and expose ourselves to the percieved threat.Your videos are fantastic!

    Brilliant information. One of my rescues was very scared of plastic bags. He's quite a slow learner so it took a few weeks of regular exercises to get there but now he LOVES plastic bags (because great things come from them). Whenever we bring the shopping in, he now 'checks' all the bags to get his treats.

    Great video! One of my Shepherds LOVED playing with balloons. It used to be one of our nightly or rainy day rituals. We'd try and keep the balloons off the ground and pass them back and forwards to each other. And yes, the balloon game was played in a structured environment and were picked up as soon as they broke. Whenever I'd say "balloon time" he'd go berserk with excitement. :)

    Excellent advice. My dog has a fear or running/Splashing water. There’s a small fountain up near our daily walk that I’ve slowly brought her towards and she’s a little more curious of it, especially since seeing one of her friends up there.
    I’ll try this technique in my bathroom with the tap running as it’s much louder than the normal sink.
    Thanks for this.

    My first dog was afraid of people so I tried to socialize her by asking strangers to give her treats, that was absolutely horrible idea. Dog was unpredictable when she grew up didnt know if she was approaching stranger for treats or she will get spooked and bite them. My 2nd dog workingline gsd had great temperament I never let stranger give him treats and rarely let them pet him, but always trained him in crowded places using food. He turned out great ignores other people dogs and everything else

    I have a 90lb Shepherd who has fears of my air fryer...I guess it makes a noise I can’t hear when it’s going. The minute he sees me put it on the kitchen counter he goes to my husband and starts panting. My husband takes him outside while the fryer is going. I think this is a big mistake and that the dog should just get used to being in the house while the fryer is on. Today I left it on the counter not running and noticed my dog was very calmly standing next to the counter. I usually put it away when I’m done with it but I’m thinking maybe I should just leave it out on the counter until he doesn’t pay attention to it. Also, I think my husband needs to stop taking him out right away so he can get used to it. Does this seem to be the correct tact? I love your videos by the way...you break things down and make them doable which I greatly appreciate!

    Hi Robert! Great video, thank you gor sharing, Any suggestions for a dog that started to have fear of his water bowl after leaving him in a different house for vacations, I have tried different bowls from different materials, but the only way he will drink water is if we pet him and stay with him while he drinks, we have tried to not pet him until he eventually is so thirsty that he will overcome his fear but even after two days without drinking he will just bark at the bowl and not drink any water. I also tried putting a small towel on him, and leave the room. he thought the towel was me and kept drinking than I tried with a smaller towel until it stopped working, Any advice from anyone?

    I had a dog that was scared to death of fireworks. Every new year and july fourth was a struggle. But she loved to retrieve, so we started playing a game with bottle rockets. I would light one and send it, then wait a bit and send her. Of course, they would pop before she could get to them. Problem solved. No more phobias of fireworks.

    Hi Robert, is this a form of flooding e.g exposing the dog to a fearful stimuli repeatedly with the hope that the dog will eventually become desensitised or habituated to the previously feared trigger? Another possible approach could be to break things down into stages and have the food bowl further away from the balloons and over several days gradually shift the distance of the bowl closer to the feared stimuli? Just a thought. And think Goofy is a great lad!! Take care

  • @davidstone61

    Robert we are having an issue with food aggression with our Belgium Malinios. She is getting better by me continuously removing the food bowl while she eats. She used to growl by merely walking near her while she ate but that has subsided. Should I continue the food removal during her eating. I now can actually put my hand in front of her mouth now although this makes her want to eat faster. When I get a hint of a growl I remove the food right away. I stroke her back and head while she eats. Can you address this question on ask me anything.

    Robert, is there a way to adapt this technique to the fear of storms i.e. thunder and lightning?

    • @thecoldwolf
      @thecoldwolf 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      yes, although a little harder. use some decent speakers to play rainstorm/thunder sounds and use the volume as a means to control the situation. You can replicate the storms as loud or quiet as you need. Start with small sessions and associate it with eating just like in the video, be careful not to give up and be warned, a real thunderstorm could set your dog back because it'll probably be more intense than your computer/tv speakers. stick with it and they'll get through it (I had to do this for a friend and it took months because of how often it storms here)

    I was going to use this method to get my Ruby used to loud bangs. But did not have to. I got one crazy dog she already loves fireworks. I think a bit too much. But I did use this method of getting dogs over a phobia with my Ruby. Ruby is a rescue and I got her when she was 1. When I first got her she was scared to death of brooms. So I am pretty sure she was abused. When I first got Ruby and I did not want her in a certain part of the house all I had to do is lean a broom against the wall in the area and she would not go any where near not even if there was food. Eventually this became useless keeping her out of other parts of the house because she finally over came her fear for the most part. She still does not like brooms but has no problem walking by one now.

Should i just carry it around all the time with her on a leash? I coach trap shooting and both my daughters participate, she will go to meets and tolerate the blasts but i would rather her know its OK and not have irrational fear. Thank you sir

    How would we do this with a dog that is super fearful of loud noises? She now knows when we are about to put in a movie because the subwoofer gets loud. She starts pacing and shaking and either comes to sit by us silently freaking out or she runs to another room. She even freaks out if we let her out back and she hears the shooting range that's miles away. Very small "pop" sounds from the guns, not even loud and she wants to come back in. She's a rescue pit from Cali and we are sure her owner hit her and was possibly very loud with it.
    She's come a LONG way in the year we've had her, but she's still young and I'd like to get her over her fears.

      Some dogs are more afraid or have less self confidence and it will take more time. Same goes for dogs that are really picky eaters. One of my dogs I think around 8 years ago, when ever she got one treat, she wouldn't eat her food. To the point of vomiting empty stomach instead of eating, waiting for the better food. 4 Days later she started eating when she was again offered and realized that she will start to starve if she doesn't eat her regular food.

    Could you suggest any way of adapting this technique to fear of firecrackers?
    I am about to start using tiny ones while treating my dog but I'm pretty sure he won't feel anywhere as scared, which is good but leaves the unsolved issue of loud ones.
    I cannot imagine a way of exploding fireworks at home while he eats without making a mess and since they don't bang continuously, I worry that may reinforce his fear.

    My dog Kipper was found in a field when he was 8 weeks old, then lived with a fellow who slept all day and worked all night, so has little exposure to many things. We worked with him and he is not the same dog as he was when we got him, but he wants to attack cars, trucks, garbage and recycle trucks when they come by. We live at the end of a dirt road so everyone uses our driveway to turn around. He's better...he doesn't want to attack plastic bags blowing down the road, but that is about it. We have tried everything. He is now on anti anxiety meds, which has helped a lot, he's way more relaxed...but vehicles still seem to trigger him. His hackles are up, his tail is going a mile a minute, and his ears are back. All the meds have done is make him more manageable when he escalates. Walking is out of the question, he's wrapped his leash around me more than one, and 66 pounds of escalation is a lot when you weigh as much as the dog. My trainer would yank him with a choke collar. I prefer your method of teaching them confidence. Any suggestions?

    How would you go about doing this for a dog afraid of fireworks, I am currently training a PTSD service dog and this is my first time doing something like this. If you have any advice it be greatly appreciated.

    • @SuperGGLOL
      @SuperGGLOL 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Richelle Gardner fireworks is very rare. Why would u need to solve that fear? It’s very trivial..... and unnecessary. Waste of time.
      I think every dog would be scared of fire works. And there’s nothing wrong with fearing something....That’s like trying to get rid of your sons fear of spider.... it’s unnecessary. Just accept his fear and move on.... unless of course you are a spider hunter and u NEED to bring ur son with u (for some reason). There’s no use in getting rid of fears that aren’t a life changer.
