  • A classic novel by William Golding that has inspired 2 film adaptations, as well as inspired themes among many other pieces of entertainment. Here I compare the 2 films of LORD OF THE FLIES!

    Fun context to the book: "Children being lost on an island and building a society with no adults" was a popular genre at the time, and Golding *hated* it. The man was a school teacher, so he'd had plenty of experience with boys the age of the characters usually in those books, and knew that the way those stories went was absolutely not how it would go down. So, he wrote his own story with how he believed it would actually happen.
    And it's the most lasting piece of "school children get stranded on an island" fiction, so... vindication for him I guess...

      @@MichelangeloVA that's largely dependent on the situation. Variables such as how kids were raised, the time this went down and where this went down. I'd say both situations are entirely plausible.

      Except Golding was wrong. Look it up. Years after the publication of his book, there was an actual incident where a shipload of school age children were marooned on an island. Not only did they not hunt each other like pigs, they actually built a functioning little society complete with animal enclosures and a small gymnasium. Many have criticized Golding as being too cynical, and in truth, he may just have been.

    I wrote a college paper on existentialism based on this book. My whole analysis revolved around the fire. The signal fire in the beginning was the kid's attempt to get rescued. After chaos ensues and they are hunting Ralph, it was the fire that ultimately saved them. Initially used to flush Ralph out, it was the needed signal that brought the adult officer.
    Man, I just summed up a 20 page thesis paper in a few sentences. What did I waste all that time in college for? :)

      No, Piggy was a warning not to put your faith in brute strength. Out of the main characters in the novel, Piggy is the weakest, but he's also the smartest. But the boys aren't mature enough to understand that Piggy is actually more valuable than Jack, who is physically the strongest character. And so the weakest is eventually killed, as in nature - despite the fact that Piggy was actually their most valuable resource. But even Piggy wasn't the hero of the book. The hero of the book is Simon, who represents Man's spiritual nature. Jack is physicality, Piggy is intellectualism, Simon is spirituality, and Ralph is the everyman caught in the middle. The point of the book is that when the shit hits the fan, brute strength and savagery will kill off the other two aspects. Piggy's and Simon's deaths are symbolic, showing that only physical aggression remains. But Simon is still the hero, because only he never does anything wrong. Even Piggy tries to distance himself from taking part in killing Simon.

You probably cant fit each chapter into 30~60 minutes, but hey the older film did a good job with 90 minutes.

    Lord of the flies was one of my favourite books I read as a kid. Never watched the movies - didn't even know they existed until this video appeared in my recommendations. I haven't read the books in many years. I only remember the main premise of the book and a few random scenes here and there. So this sounds like the perfect opportunity to revisit one of my favourite childhood stories.

I’ve never thought about the social mask thing, but I like it. I think early on you can see Jack is kinda of able to control or even mask his personality to be more friendly. And then by the end you can maybe see Ralph doing it more as he tries to survive everything breaking up and changing. Interesting points. I liked hearing it! :)

    Very good review, Mr Jahns. Some quick notes: excellent beard, overjoyed that you promoted the Richard Brooks classic film. Yes, I agree that the book is superior, but this is the better film treatment. I would be interested to hear your take on other classic films. I was thinking specifically of Kurosawa’s classic samurai films - Sanjuro, Yojimbo, and the Seven Samurai. It is true that most of your TH-cam audience would not know these great films, but you would help to address that deficit in their cultural education. Thank you for listening. Please continue. Your reviews have helped to make a tedious isolation more tolerable. Thanks.

      I think Lord of the Flies is a very important book, but I'm conflicted as to how accurate a portrayal of human nature it really is. Many have argued that Golding was overly cynical in his assessment of humanity, and after learning that there actually was an instance of schoolboys being marooned on an island - and that they didn't violently murder each other - I can kinda lean that way. Still, it's a great book that should be read by everyone.

    Some years ago, there was talk of another Lord of the Flies remake which would feature an all-female cast. Do you think the story would work if it were a group of girls instead of boys? Would it make sense for things to go down the way they did if all the characters were female?

    • @spicynoodles6548
      @spicynoodles6548 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think what made lord of the flies what it is, is that these were young boys. Golding knew how cruel these boys could be and I think if it were a group of girls the story would be different in retrospect. It would probably take a lot longer for the girls to go crazy and I genuinely think had it been about girls it would never have taken a dark twist. Golding himself even said how if it were girls they would've been fine. I'd love to see what they could do with the story but with girls but realistically it would be extremely boring

    I have always thought the Lord of the flies as the Ruler of the flies (children in this case) and that they were weak indeed. But for some time and because of lack of law, they felt like the ultimate power on the island. The name of the book hinted about a temporary power and it was abused by the children. They can only realize it when they meet the real power.
