Something I loved about Viggo Mortensens performance of Aragorn is that he always looked appropriately scared of the orcs, nazgul, etc. but he fought them anyways because needed to. You felt the energy he was giving, and how exhausted he was.
I mean, the fact that these elven characters are powerful is not something I have an issue with. As massive lore nerd I know these people are incredibly powerful, so them being able to easily take care of things, without much worry is understandable, but also makes them harder too adapt. Which they have sorta failed at.
The ice troll scene made me chuckle. You would think these group of elves are highly skilled fighters or as almost skilled as Galadriel. Seeing them being easily taken down by the ice troll was weird, if they can’t handle an ice troll what chance do they have if they had found Sauron and his orcs…
Not to mention that these elves were most likely survivors of the First Age. Meaning that they had to deal with Morgoth, Sauron, the Balrogs, the dragons, the werewolves, the vampires, the wolves, the trolls, the orcs and whatever other creatures Morgoth created. And yet now they can't even handle a single troll. Húrin, a human, killed the troll guard of Gothmog before getting captured in the Nirnaeth Arnoediad. And these elves were outmatched by a troll.
@@unclephillymya They already wanted to go home, if you pay attention to the dialogue both before and after the scene, they are exhausted and Galadriel has been pushing them on, against the orders of the King, this was simply their breaking point. That being said, I do agree that their inability to do anything didn’t sit right.
I feel like the money spent on this series could’ve been split evenly between several other *Smaller* Amazon shows and they’d be better for it.. like instead of spending 700 mill to a Billion.. give some of that money to The Boys or something - cos nothing is really impressive anymore by a CGI location and creatures when they could be done practically.. but that’s just my take.
@@firstlast9846 I'm with you pal, The Boys is great, but if they had this kind of budget they could make it much more spectacular and they could do some more intense battle scenes etc. I still prefer a good story over some goofy action, also the new Gen V series might be a relief, if it's going to be an honest SUPE high school drama series it might be the first of its kind. “Maybe the show will make us appreciate the Hobbit more.” Literally that’s what happened when Disney made the Star Wars sequels. Everyone liked the prequels after that. 😂
Although there were a lot of people who already loved the prequels, it's just that the sequels finally made their voices heard. Though, I admit, that could still be the case with The Hobbit. I honestly really like them, even though they're much worse from an adaptation standpoint.
The problem with the Hobbit trilogy is that it's just so bloated. Get a legitimate copy of the trilogy and then download one of the many fan edits which remove all of the bloat
@@peterlewis2178 I honestly quite like The Hobbit trilogy, yes it's bloated, fill with bad CGI and some really annoying original characters, compare to the LOTR trilogy it's nowhere close in terms of quality. They had a perfect opportunity to show what the elves are famous for their Martial Prowess. It catches them off guard a couple die then they systematically cut it down as a team but no, Galadriel is incredible and the rest of them are useless. Classic!
Based on the dialogues it seems like the other elves were born after the fall of the trees, which would make Galadriel quite a bit more powerful than they are.
Eowyn showed fear. She wasn't the perfect fighter. She was feminine. Yet she still battled the Orcs despite her fear. That's what made her so admirable and gave her the amazing ''I am no man'' scene. It wouldn't have had any impact at all if she had instantly been a super duper perfect ninja with a constant scowl looking down her nose the whole time.
Viggo Mortensen, was excellent towards his performance as Aragorn in the lord of the rings films. It was a physical role for him. And his performance in Green Book was astounding.
Performance-wise Mortensen was good, but good lord Green Book was a sappy, obnoxious by-the-number Oscar-bait. Textbook definition of overdone and overblown.

To write an ultra-powerful badass well, they need to care, especially about the “little guy”. Levi in AoT, for example, is introduced (aside from people calling him a badass while he rides out) in a scene where he casually kills titans without his expression ever changing…then he immediately goes to a dying soldier, holds his hand, and gives him words of comfort in that his death has a purpose, all while emoting heavily (which is atypical of his character). This takes him from being some badass to a badass we care about (we care about him because he cares about everyone). It also means that, even if he seems invulnerable in battle, he can still be hurt. All this is done in a way of show, don’t tell, which is particularly important when dealing with emotion and motivation of a character.
I don't think Levi would be loved as much as he is if we didn't have those scenes where he showed he cares about people. To piggyback off that scene, this is also where we learn he's a clean freak. Again, show don't tell. Levi kills the Titans and is covered in blood, he remarks how disgusting it is and starts cleaning his hands with a handkerchief. Then right after, he goes and talks to the soldier who's about to die, and holds his hand, covered in blood. Goes to show that he likes to be clean, but he's willing to disregard that if it means comforting someone he cares about, displaying how selfless he is. It's a really fucking good scene.

Jeremy’s opinion is one of the very few I respect on this platform. I’ve heard all the pre chatter from people convinced this show was going to fail as an adaptation, but I was willing to let the show speak for itself. But when Jeremy calls something ‘boring’, you can take that to the bank, ladies and gentlemen.
Ny favourite scene was when he had his Orc minions building Barad Dur and he threw a tantrum, casting it to the ground, and hissed, "What is this, a school for ants?!".
I have alot of respect for jeremy, he could've milke the shit out of ROP, making a review for each episode telling us how shitty it is, but he didnt because he just doesnt like it which says alot about his character.

I think the best adaptation since Peter Jacksons LOTR is DUNE. That movie looked and felt exactly how I have imagined it. The movie might not be for everyone but as a fan, I loved it.
I loved Dune but it should have been a TV show. I absolutely loved what I saw but there just wasn't enough of it. You simply can't fit the entirety of the story of Dune in 3 hours it needed at least a 20 hour season but this being said the film was outstanding I just want MORE.
@@TheKlawwGang888 I agree, but it is something special to go to the cinema and watch a movie like this. As a TV series they could gotten more story out of it. The thing about the ice troll scene is that im more annoyed that the ice troll smashed a bunch of elite elves. I mean aren’t they meant to be agile and skilful? They looked like a bunch of ordinary human footmen.
@Bad Boys Boogie here's the difference in that scene Galadriel unleashed most of her power just to contain and scare away just a fraction of what Sauron truly is. And in the rings of power scene she is doing a bunch of choreographed flashy moves that seemingly kills the ice troll.
@Bad Boys Boogie also ya the elves can be taken by surprise but the show is essentially showing them as weak to make Galadriel's flashy entrance and finish possible.
I liked the part where Galadriel jumped off her horse and yelled "it's Elfen time!" then threw her sword up into the air and proceeded to destroy the orc army with her fists before the sword hit the ground.
The ice troll scene... The idea that a group of skilled Elves couldn't handle and Ice Troll is ridiculous. The part that Galadriel marysued it is believable to me, but not with a sword. They should have made her stand there being all pretty and cast a spell. That is how powerful she is in the book.
The sword throws her off, I wish she was in robes and no armor. Also it's weird that she hasn't married yet and had her daughter, it would have been nice to see her motives more motherly to protect her daughter from the woes she's seen.
@@roycereeves5456 ok my fault on that but you can tell the arc is there. I'll always be baffled by reboots, sequels/prequels, and adaptations that completely set out to undo a lot of what made their predecessors so iconic. I admire creative choices that force viewers to re-evaluate their perception of pre-existing characters, lore, or events. It's become more clearer which creative teams/writers genuinely respect their predecessors AND push the boundaries (e.g., Red Dead Redemption 2, House of the Dragon, Better Call Saul) and which are merely set on creating THEIR OWN version of established IPs (e.g., Star Wars Sequel Trilogy, a good chunk of any animation/manga live-action adaptation) -- while simultanesouly depending on their predecessors name to get audiences engaged. It feels so arrogant, unoriginal, and disrespectful. I'm curious to see which category The Rings of Power falls into
Another example: Netflix He-Man show killed off He-Man and then centered around a strong 'womyn' and her black best friend (lesbian lover). Such disrespect!
@@skriabinfly I would believe you about Netflix killing He-Man if He-Man hadn't stopped being relevant or popular with younger audiences since Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles first hit TV screens. As much as those IPs desperately try to stay relevant with constant reboots in cartoons, comics, and movies, neither have managed to retain even an ounce of relevancy with modern kids (who all view it as something their grandparents used to watch as kids, thus making them outdated and irrelevant).

Unfortunately, it seems that fan bases don’t make franchises money. At least not nearly as much as just dumbing everything down to the lowest common denominator and pandering to everyone all the time. You’d think everyone would catch on, but that’s part of the problem. Inclusion is fantastic, and it can be done well while still respecting the source material and the fans. Same here. I had always seen nerdy kids in high school reading that book and always thought that it was just some sort of niche thing. But then I saw The Fellowship of the Ring and was immediately hooked and understood exactly what those nerdy kids saw in reading the book. My dad, who felt the same way about it as I did before seeing the movies, went out and bought the entire book series and read them cover to cover until he was done because of the first Peter Jackson film. And I have never seen my dad obsessed about something like this before or since. It just goes to show you the power of not only the Jackson films, but of the books as well. The only Power that this new TV show has is in the title of the show.
Yes. Only true fans can have this kind of realization. But you know the real haters from the other side would just tell you to "its fantasy! just shut up and enjoy the show!"
Peter Jackson invested $280 mil into his trilogy making it a masterpiece in the movie industry, he had characters that we all fell in love the moment they showed up on the screen and we cared and felt for them throughout the whole trilogy, Howard Shore made an unforgettable soundtrack that even if you hear a few notes you know exactly where it's from including the scene. The Hobbit trilogy even tho was way expanded than one movie with people loving it or hating it still was great. The Dwarfs were amazing, Martin Freeman as Bilbo nailed the role. So, what Pete did great in this movies - perfect cast. Indeed Pete did some changes to the story in his movies but overall he respected the lore and Tolkien's legacy to the letter. Amazon just buffed $1 billion investment into a series with $57 mil per episode and it fails successfully. Why? Complete disrespect of Tolkien, Breaking the lore of Tolkien's work completely, Modern retarded agendas and ideologies inserted to please the only audience would love it - media shills and Twatter morons. Worst cast ever to be seen on any screen. NONE of the characters are lovable, all of them are purely annoying making us wanting to see them dead and the bad guy to win. Boring soundtrack that has nothing memorable in it. Bad editing. CG vomit inducing galore.
This so called “modern” movies and shows are just politically correct bullshit… This nonsense of being “inclusive” rather than respecting history and culture is just another form of assimilation and racism. Inserting characters of color into white stories and historical pieces are just another way of saying “you guys are the same as us and can be just like us, just as white as we are”. White stories should just be white, like Snow White should just be a cast of white actors, does nothing sound remotely wrong about calling a black person white? What has happened to us? Being inclusive doesn’t mean ignoring differences, it means respecting and accepting them. We are all different, with different genetics, backgrounds and upbringing. We are limited in the people we can become and that’s ok. If ppl are actually inclusive they would be making historical and cultural accurate movies and shows based on minority stories with a full on minority cast and not just remaking white stories with minority casts. There are so many interesting stories from all the different cultures around the world that would be amazing if made into films or shows, but they just HAVE to focus on the cliche ones and keep remaking them because that’s easier. When can we actually have culturally, historically and source material accurate entertainments…

Speaking of slow burners, a show that does 'em brilliantly right is Better Call Saul. The payoff is always worth it. And it's not boring. You can have absolutely nothing happening & it's still super intriguing to watch. Because of the most important aspect, the writing. The writing is phenomenal. The visuals mean nothing if the writing is so abysmal
As a current example, House of the Dragon is on right now and there’s interesting characters in the first few minutes. It’s also a “slow burn” in regards to the main plot being a civil war, but they have plenty of action in between it seems.
As a generic fantasy: 6/10 As a Tolkien adaptation: 2/10 Overall enjoyment: 5/10 It's fine I guess. It's a soulless corporate cash grab borrowing some hat tricks from Marvel, with some visible signs of passion from the actors and artists, but zero visible effort from the writers. Many attempts at wise proverbs come across as an A.I. imitating Tolkien. But the greatest sin of them all, one that cannot be forgiven, was giving elves short hair. I struggle even to describe such atrocities. It will satisfy your high fantasy cravings until something better comes out.
@@avalokitesvara4092 He doesn't explicitly state that they systematically have long hair, he just makes sure to carefully describe every individual elf character as having long hair.
@@Shcmaylor And it does not describe every elf as having long hair. As far as LOTR is concerned, this description is only given for Glorfindel it seems. Finally, it's almost irrelevant since you say that short hair on elves is bad per se, so that Tolkien would have been wrong to do it himself.
The things is... the hairstyles in rop look absolutely wank. They look so out of place and modern. It's a real turn off for a lot of people Regardless if they're short or not in the books. Lotr trilogy did it better and gave everyone their individuality looks as well. Doesn't help with the overall casting. People look so out of place. What a fucking mess.
Tolkien was an historian who imagined an entire world, based on many cultures' myths and folklore, from top to bottom. He wrote his stories as if they were translations of ancient histories, so the reader was immersed in what seemed to be a document of the past. Jeff Bozo has funded a bunch of creatives to slap together something "Tolkienesque" and in the process both missed the point and completely disrespected Tolkien's scholarship.
He wasn't really a historian, he was a linguist who loved inventing languages. He then went on to invent the worlds that would have lead to that language existing

Peter Jackson had the benefit of the trilogy and the Hobbit to go off of. The hubris it took for the creators of this fan fiction mess to pass it off as the work of Tolkien is a sad sign of the times. I watched both episodes hoping I would enjoy it but so far I'm not impressed.
The Art of Tolkien is more than pretty colors, Elves with pointy ears or even War. Death and the Mortality of Man kind, is the overall Theme to his works. For those of us that see the tragic beauty and heart wrenching love stories this poetic man left us. They can change things if they wish, the question is will it pay off doing so. I think when an Artist says, "I would not want this to happen with my work", Respect should be priority, or risk backlash from a large fan base 70+ years deep in lore. The Marketing was really, really bad for this show. They didn't pull off The Respect and Honor that should have been in front of this show. Maybe it is just Marketing, The Actors like to speak their minds, That is for sure.
also the idea of fighting a centralized power. It's very nationalistic. Each group solidly believes their way is the best way. Legolas and the dwarf argue and tease each other eventually becoming friends but still have no desire to join forces after the war. They all want to go back to their nations. This show is literally made by globalists that think nationalism is evil.
Well as far as death and mortality, I feel they tastefully addressed it in episode 2 with the emotional beat of Elrond having missed such a large part of Durin's life. At least there's no way they can depict Ar Pharazon and the fall of Numenor without diving into it. I will say Tolkien would probably not approve of the liberties taken with some of the characters. Galadriel was written to be competent in battle, and her canon may have been the most muddled, but in no versions of her story was she on a revenge quest. Wherever her arc lands her (and hopefully Celeborn will be a part of it at some point), I think the far more interesting starting point would've been her canon motivation of wanting her own kingdom. That would more naturally send her on an arc where she learns to fight for others instead of herself.
Honestly, I don't give a fuck about respect. I'd watch a movie where they tie Tolkien up on a poll and throw tomatoes at him... if it was written well. And that's the issue and the difference between Tolkien and the writers of this show. This crap is so bland it feels like it was written by an AI... I don't care if the dwarves were 6 ft tall transsexuals. Give me a show with some real passion and love for story telling with knowledge of what makes a good story. Ice troll scene is probably a crystallisation of everything wrong with current writing. Emotionless not relatable robot does thing perfectly, the end. This stuff is not new, people have wrote crap for thousands of years. Just they used to not get so much funding and if they did their story didn't live long enough to exist into the modern age.
In Tolkien's books the Numenorians forget Eru and begin to believe he doesn't exist. Sauron in fact manipulates them into believing he was made up to control man. And it's this hubris that leads to the destruction of Numenor. I wouldn't be surprised if they leave that out as it's quite a reflection of the present. Also Tolkien's books are heavily drenched in symbolism and philosophy, with themes like free will vs determinism, original sin and many more religious/Catholic/moral themes being addressed.
The perversion of the Elves I think is their most flagrant offence, something obvious within the first 5 minutes of screen time. They are portrayed no different to humans, not immortal beings with a foot in both the seen and unseen. There is no mystique, no maturity, no cadence in the way they walk, talk or fight. Galadriel in particular was butchered, Kate Blanchet's performance was a good attempt at constructing the divine feminine. She was wise, mysterious, warm and fiercely intelligent. If they wanted their strong female lead so badly all they needed to do was take inspiration in her performance in the original Trilogy and even The Hobbit, in which the scene she confronts Sauron and the Witch Kings gave me goosebumps. Instead they do the exact opposite, by casting a 20-something woman with the posture and maturity you'd find in a teenager, eyes set retribution. She is seen as weak, immature and combative. The casting in this show is an aberration, even in contrast to the original Trilogy that was packed with solid actors, that fit the roles well. It hurts man, Hollywood is a fucking soup kitchen.
The Elves are too human and not that mysterious. Galadriel is suppose to be the enigmatic Elven witch/sorcerer. Instead Galadriel is a warrior princess that is boring. The actress that plays her is fine but the character is too rigid.
Well said. And your invoking the term divine feminine for Blanchett’s Galadriel is spot on. Perhaps you’ve already come to know about theories of personal integration and concepts of the anima and animus. But as a teenager, Galadriel was a huge influence for my idea of the perfect powerful woman. By making her more like a man, they’re just doing a disservice to true feminine power. You’re right, it’s a travesty, and it really saddens me.
@@rhineman .. what qualities of a man? Being a fighter? That's the quality of a PERSON. Arwen was a warrior, also powerful, beautiful, and magical. Eowyn was a warrior, powerful, and beautiful. Why couldn't/shouldn't a much younger Galadriel be a warrior?
@@dresdenwarlock7978 imo those characters firmly retained their femininity while so far Galadriel is much more masculine. That’s not me saying women can’t or shouldn’t fight, but they should retain some of that sense of being somewhat open and emotionally present which I just don’t get with Clark’s character.
I don't know why studios boast about how much they spent. For me the most impressive thing is making a great quality movie with the least amount of budget. When I love a movie and I find out they *only* spent 90 million, my reaction is "Wow I'm really impressed".
As far as I know, Peter Jackson was already past done when he started filming the Hobbit, I highly doubt he wanted ANYTHING to do with 'Rings of Power', otherwise the Dwarf women would have beards.
He was actually asked to come on to consult by Amazon, and when he followed up and said he might be willing if he could see a script, they completely ghosted him.
@@icepicjoey I'm not sure. If I remember right, The Hobbit missed that little detail too, despite Aragorn saying the beards are why female dwarves are mistaken for men. Even with T.V. and movies now being overloaded with pushing Social Justice, they missed a good opportunity to have some kind of Trans representation there.
Jeremy is also one of the larger, and more “old timer” movie and show reviewers on YT so this video is guna get a lot of attention by many overlapping fanbases. Some Tolkien specific channels like Nerd of the Rings (who channel from their first video was about Amazon’s series) are obviously sellouts. Other are so puritan regarding Tolkien’s lore being a white European mythology that they don’t want diverse casting (I don’t think these people are racist, because they are correct about Tolkien’s intent to make a British mythology, but they are definitely unreasonable in some extent as it’s ok to bend some rules in fantasy sometimes to allow viewers find relatability), and then there are others in the middle where they just seem so desperate to cling onto the idea of visiting Middle Earth on screen again that they willfully blind themselves to the glaring issues with the show. It’s tough to say which perspective is best as starting point, but putting aside all the politics that Amazon started by accusing fans of being racists, the show just isn’t well put together, and Jeremy is one of the only large reviewers pointing that out.
@@ygkemosabi8280 Well what is your suggestion then to handle the portion of the fanbase that are race obsessed pc culture warriors? Tell them that they can't have the black elf because elves weren't black in the lore? I don't disagree its ridiculous as far as lore bending but I don't see why it needs to be at the center of the debate when Amazon is fucking up the story telling regardless of their casting choices.
If Amazon made a film of adventures of the two blue wizards it would be great. Tolkien hardly talked about them anywhere so amazon can make stuff up and we can believe it. Instead a show they hardly have rights too and re-write characters we have loved for decades.
Expanse got a huge "wtf is happening and wtf will be happen" factor. But I think it's hard to do with prequels even it's so good. You know the end and you watch the story. For that reason, for prequels, you need to work way harder to be good.
It's weird. There was definitely something about that cave troll scene that turned a lot of people of. It was the moment I lost interest cause yeah she just flipped around and killed it so easily there was NO drama to it. I literally rolled my eyes when she slashed it then didnt even watch as it fell over.
Bruv Legolas literally took down a mumakil and a whole regimen on top of it, Galadriel is literally a super elf beyond Legolas. Writing sure, we can complain about but let’s not get hung up on that one scene. Let’s all give it some time.
The beginning with Galadriel was weird. First off, what were they planning on doing if they did happen to find Sauron, the most powerful remaining evil in the entire world? They had like 7 half dead elves. Second, they didn't do a good job establishing the relationship of the group, so I kept wondering who this rando was that kept questioning every decision of the Galadriel when she was clearly the one in charge. Then the ice troll attacked, bowled over a few of the elves (who just stood there even though they should have seen that chunk of ice or w/e coming), and Galadriel comes to help along with the other guy (her second in command? I still don't know who he was). At this point I was thinking, "Okay, they don't see eye to eye on a lot of things, but this is where we'll see some great teamwork that illustrates this is an effective group of fighters that knows how to work as a team." Galadriel draws her sword, the guy draws his sword....and then he puts it on the ground so that he can just launch Galadriel at it and she immediately demolishes it without any effort. That wasn't teamwork, they literally just threw her at enemy and she destroyed it. Pretty bad and uninteresting storytelling and execution.
The dialogue was also clunky to me. You're not really cold, it's just such an evil place that torches give off no warmth. It has the same energy as "Why has the car stopped?" "It's frightened. " The difference is that the second exchange is from Clue, which is a comedy.
Also Galadriel is not freakin' Kratos and nowhere in Tolkien does he suggest Galadriel ran around like Xena Warrior Princess. Now. if this had been some OC Elven character who's a champion of Galadriel, fine, wouldn't bother me, but that it's Galadriel herself, just...no. No disrespect to any actors on this show, they're just doing their job.
Well this is the very beginning of the story, and stories tend to have their characters start one way and undergo an arc to end another way. Galadriel starts much like she was at the close of the Years of the Trees - headstrong. She doesn't care for teamwork, only for her own ambition (that much is faithful to Tolkien, though what that ambition is isn't necessarily). I think it's more than likely we'll see her character evolve over the course of the show, learn to value those around her and abandon her selfish tendencies (hopefully with the help of Celeborn). Idk I'm a fan of Berserk, a story infamous for making you sit through the world's most unlikable and impossibly badass character for the first several chapters, only to make him one of the most compelling characters in fiction before the end.
@@Dan_Roland The difference is that Berserk was crafted by someone who loves his work and his passion shows. Rings of Power doesn't have that on its side.
@@Tadicuslegion78 Elves live forever & Galadriel was a fighter & lead a rebellion, so I guess that's some reasoning for her to be as she is in this new show. It doesn't make me feel great, but it's a thought.
LOTR was a huge bonding moment between me and my little brother. We spent an entire day in the movie theatre watching LOTR: Extended Edition before he went off to college. The films (Hobbit trilogy included) have been a part of our Christmas viewing every year since. Having said that, I'm kinda disappointed with what we got so far. Nothing was really engaging. Norhing drew me in, made me want to really care about any of these characters. And I feel after two episodes, it really should. Not really wanting to compare it to HOTD but they hit the ground running. You got to care about the characters, the world, knew what stakes were involved, before the end of episode one. A slow burn is one thing, but with only so many episodes, its important that you do what you can to establish a hold on your viewers straight away. RINGS doesn't do that. HOTD does. Personally, while I know this show will do well, I don't think its going to have the same mass appeal as HOTD. Like if you're really into fantasy and like the LOTR films, you'll watch. However, there is nothing to draw in that viewer that doesn't adhere to eithers of those categories. Which is a shame, because the movies were able to do that easily.
That's a cool story about you & your brother. One of my favorite movie going experiences was skipping school to wait in line all day to see Phantom Menace with my older brother & his friends. The movie itself turned out to be pretty disappointing, but the day spent celebrating Star Wars in anticipation of a new movie is still a treasured memory. The epic cheer that went up in our theater at the sound of the Lucas fanfare and my ordinarily stoic big brother bouncing up & down in his seat saying "I can't believe we're gonna see a new Star Wars movie!" is a scene I will fondly recall until the day I die.

"It felt only natural to us that an adaptation of Tolkien's work would reflect what the world actually looks like." - Lindsey Weber, E.P. Amazon's LOTR Series, Vanity Fair (Feb. 2022) . Peter Jackson, interview GreenCine (Dec. 2002) - "There are certainly themes Tolkien felt were important. We made a promise to ourselves at the beginning of the process that we weren't going to put any of our own politics, our own messages or our own themes into these movies. What we were trying to do was to analyse what was important to Tolkien and to try to honour that. In a way, were trying to make these films for him, not for ourselves."
I think this is the crux of the issue. Peter’s LoTR was a direct translation of Tolkien’s book to film. The Hobbit was a movie based on a book’s plot, but was more of a LoTR sequel movie than a translation of the Hobbit book. Rings of Power is an _adaption_ of the world and characters into a modern audience’s tv show. It’s going to have all the stuff modern tv shows have: modern casting decisions, modern writer’s room decisions, modern soulless conglomerate profit-motivated algorithm bullshit, and a modern focus on general audiences rather than dedicated fandoms. The tv show isn’t trying to attract book fans. Its trying to attract general audiences and movie fans. It’s that simple.
LOTR - A story whose central theme is about a bunch of people of different races and cultures setting aside their differences, coming together and working side by side for the greater good. Isn't that "woke"? I thought that was the problem?
I don’t think her taking the troll so easily was the problem, they’re supposed to be these great warriors stronger than Legolas who did some crazy shit by himself. The problem was making the rest so weak. And not as bad ass as her.
i think that the fight it self was so weak, like come on they are THE BEST elf warrior possibly in the world, and they have ZERO strategy? have they never fought a frost troll? they dont have a formation or nothing, if they had a formation in order to divert the troll atention so galadriel could do the final blow it would be much more interesting, since it was actually a 1V1 and she HUMILIATED the troll, something legolas could probably do if were being honest but common it could be a much better scene.
I think you've nailed it! I too would have been on board for a grim-dark _Children of Hurin_ adaptation. That story contains so much awesomeness around a compelling, relatable, and flawed character (unlike, ahem, the Galadriel we've gotten so far). People think "Game of Thrones" was dark...
During my first read of CoH I had to keep closing the book and checking the cover to remind myself that I was in fact reading a piece of Tolkien. This one dives deeep into the dark machinations of the professor and gives the reader a profound appreciation for the depravity of Morgoth's intent. Dark is an understatement, really. It's bleak and cold.
My favorite shows are slow and methodical, making sure that each scene serves a purpose later on. I mean, my favorite show was intentionally slow for 4 hours but it paid off. When I watched rings of power, it had none of that, making me wonder the MO of the writers. You can't give excuses like "just wait for the rest of the episodes" when the show already wasted 2 HOURS of content and doesn't seem to know its own purpose. Do the writers want to make a LotR show to expand the world? Or remind us of how much they compromised the world to pave way for their ego? I'm afraid it's the latter; and my friend (a tolkien fan) believes so
But how do you know the scenes won't serve a purpose later on? The show took 1 episode just to introduce us to the world and it's justified since it's fucking middle earth on the first and second age and not any fantasy world. Chill everyone

If he was such a fan then he would know that this isnt LOTR. This is Tolkien's other book " The Silmarillion" which takes place waaaaay before the Hobbit and is competely accurate to what Tolkien wrote... only true fans know this
When Jeremy stood up on Mount Doom drinking champagne together with Frodo and pushed Bezos to fall into the lava with the ring, it was clear that Amazon faithfully followed Tolkien's vision.
honest review man, enjoyed it. This is a show trapped by its budget and expectations. To maximize returns and minimize risk, it's got to be everything to everyone. Making a faithful adaptation of a literary universe based on northern european myths, culture, and language...too risky. I'm chinese and if Hollywood made Journey to the West (one of the great literary works of ancient china) and made it all diverse and changed the story to fit with current cultural norms I'm sure a lot of people would be pissed. Only two episodes in already feels like the story is created to fit set pieces...the orc scene and the ocean scene, the setup for both are so dumb and illogical it just takes me right out, I, like Jeremy, rewatched Fellowship of the Ring today after watching the first 2 episodes and damn, I had forgotten how good it was, everything flows and the immersion is so complete due to the setting, characters, the flow of the story...no modern haircuts, no jarring inclusion of random characters and the original trilogy really takes you into middle-earth, it's like the first time I went to europe, it was exhilarating to go to a new world, embrace it's history, it's culture, and letting your imagination soar. This show constantly reminds me of how today's entertainment is more and more about being low risk, not trusting the audience, going overboard not to offend anyone, not about taking the audience on an amazing experience, telling a great story. Typical by the numbers production, pretty disappointed a rich literary masterpiece is attached to this kind of show.
Totally agree. I'm a big fan of the Three Kingdoms story, read the books many times. I love the 2010 tv series, even if they changed a few things. I truly hope Hollywood never gets the idea of doing something with it, like with ROP

Other channels that call out wokeness are legit also. They are simply done by fans who don't want their favorite franchises be ruined by modern day Hollywood. Thank goodness LOTR fans aren't putting up with any of it unlike Star Wars, Marvel, DC, Star Trek, Terminator, and other fanbases do which divide them. Here all LOTR fans are criticizing the show for a good reason. When something is being called woke or have identity politics, chances are they are going to be garbage like Rings of Power here
My biggest concern about this show was that it would end up feeling like a completely unrelated generic fantasy series with the LotR title slapped onto it to bank off of a popular franchise, and so far it sounds like that's exactly what it is.
Jeremy, I sincerely enjoy and appreciate your reviews and content. But now that you've exposed your level of appreciation for LOTR you've just leveled up in my book. Thank you.
Great job bringing up the comparison between the cave troll scene in LotR and the ice troll in this show. I had exactly the same thought watching it. That is the problem that some writers fail to comprehend - if you want to make a point about a character being very powerful, and I have no problem with Galadriel being extremely powerful, after all, she is like thousands of years old elf, you have to do it in a smart way. If in the first fight scene, you make it look like they are so powerful that virtually nothing is a challenge enough for them to even break a sweat, that makes for a boring watch. I just wasn't... afraid for her. It felt like a Marvel movie fight scene - a lot of incredible moves, zero stakes. I was afraid for the fellowship, even though I read the book first.
yeah that scene was straining, but what truly broke me was her jumping the ship. Those were such absurd odds and she came out on top while making it seem rather easy
@@chrisgund88 True, especially once you look at the map and the distance between Valinor and Middle-Earth. Off topic, but I also realized what bugged me about Gil-Galad's clothes. They were decorated with dwarven runes for some reason. Looks like the creators were not phased about the difference between the beautiful, ellegant tengwar and the somewhat crude looking, on Norse runes based dwarven alphabet.
Yeah, you can establish her as being really powerful, but also cocky and arrogant (like season 1 Jamie Lannister). But then they also have get pushed off a boat by some random human woman in episode 2. Like if she was a 'great fighter' she would have been able to react and deal with that.
DORIN is just how you’d think the dwarf prince/king should have been. I enjoyed the interaction between Elron and DORIN. DORIN made it a point to say that 20 years to an elf is nothing. Not the same in the eyes of the rest of the world and that’s why I think elves kept to themselves.
That was actually the only part of the show I liked. It almost felt like whoever wrote those scenes was a different person than whoever wrote everything else.
Too bad they picked the wrong elf to show this. Elron was a half elf till he was given his full elfhood. His dad was human. His brother chose to be human. He then had to watch his brother and all his family die over the years. And even raised a lot of his " nephews " not just Aragon. So yeah he understands mortal time lines.
Honestly seeing a dwarf kingdom in its prime has been the highlight of the show thus far. The Harfoots are also an interesting culture and I'm curious who the man who fell from the sky is going to turn out to be... The rest of the plot lines, however, are bland at best and insufferable at worst.
Clarification on the rights Amazon has and what they are adapting: Amazon does NOT have the right to the Simarillion, which is why the Story doesn't really cover that stuff, even though it would be very cool. What they do have the rights to is LotR, including its APPENDICES. And in these Appendices is a summary and telling of the 3rd and 2nd Ages. So the stories of the 2nd Age (specifically Numenor and the Rings of Power) is the obvious choice of source material they can adapt, which is what they did.
@@TheAaroquesi They could have done it way better than what they did if they had kept politics and propaganda at a minimum and instead focused on the story and the lore. As an example they shouldn't have made Galadriel a Mary Sue.
There’s way more material about the 3rd age in the appendices. They could have had so much more material there to adapt. Instead they chose the 2nd age, which was idiotic.

Thanks for being honest Jeremy. I thought the first 2 episodes were very "mid", not awful but not good either a solid 5/10. Visually stunning but the writing and character direction was every bit as bad as I anticipated from the trailers. The worst part of the show is definitely the awful masculine warrior portrayal of Galadriel, you mentioned the troll scene but the jumping off a boat in the middle of the Sundering Sea scene was much worse to me. Where the heck was she going to swim to? There is no land in sight, nothing but open sea. There was also no mention of her husband and daughter who are a huge deal from a continuity standpoint. The meteor man also without a doubt is Gandalf, he even did the blackening sky thing when he gets mad which Gandalf did in the beginning of the fellowship of the ring in Bilbo's home. This is lore breaking, Gandalf should not be in this show as he was not in the second age.
Valid complaints. As a leftist i agree writings the issue NOT DIVERSITY. Because im. Not a RACIST conservative i had no issues with black elves and dwarfs. At all. Skin color means nothing.
Think you're spot in. I went into this ignoring the hate too since nobody had seen the show yet. Think it deserved a chane and I will keep watching hoping it improves. But for the billionth time, hollywood screws up female characters. We DO NOT need female characters to be girlbosses who do everything perfectly. This is not a good character, and never has been a good character. All the LoTR characters are flawed people who grow through the journey. What I'm getting so far from Galadriel is that she's the best fighter, and she's right about everything and she can swim an entire ocean? It's ridiculous. Actress does a fine job though. I'll wait a few more episodes to write her character off but I feel like we should've been introduced to the obstacle she is trying to overcome. Not the outerforce, which is Sauron, but inner-battle that a good MC should have. If she's already perfect from episode 1, why do I care about her story??? Besides for that, I liked the Harfoot actors, and I am interested to see where the old man storyline goes. Elrond and Durin easily have the best scenes and i hope we get more of them interacting, because they were the most pleasant part of the two hours. The elf and the random lady... i don't care about either one yet. Why should I? We'll see where that goes tho. Willing to give it more time. I don't mind Amazon taking some liberties with the property, just make it good. So far it's just okay. Wheel of Time had a more gripping start, and that show is also average. That said, I will keep watching and hope it picks up. Beginning of shows can often be rough and pilots espsecialy are hard to get right.

*"Thee wizard!"* - Man, your friend Adamn deserves props for hitting you with the most real response a fantasy nerd could have ever possibly dished in that scenario. Beautiful story. A great slow burn, was the zombie/white sub-plot of the G.o.T. series if we ignore how the last season or two ended up. I can't figure out if the meteor man is Gandolf, or a lazy swerve Sauron (as he was in the visual of an eye when lying in the fiery crater), and Idk how much I care either way; I'm still astonished that Galadriel's plan was that she was going to swim a thousand miles back to the shores of Middle Earth. Yikes.
Imagine if they made the Silmarillion an anthology series. You could have episodes with such range. For stories that are a little bit more fleshed out in the Silmarillion (Turin Turambar, Beren/Luthien, Numenor, Sack of Doriath, etc), there could be a multi-episode run. This would allow for the characters to be highlighted while not having to worry about the huge timelines/timeline skips that are present in Middle Earth due to how elves age in comparison to men. There could be a continuity thread that follows major character arcs of the sons of Feanor and Annatar/Sauron.

This take is so perfect Im rey start using this so much inna future
It's 2 eps and she's still distraught over her brother which I assume she'll get over and become more caring later. That's how arcs work.
Well, it also helps that Levi is a secondary character.

He-Man has had multiple reboots aimed at trying to update the character and IP, but it's never worked at getting the IP back to the popularity it enjoyed in the early 80s. Same with GI Joe.
As much as those IPs desperately try to stay relevant with constant reboots in cartoons, comics, and movies, neither have managed to retain even an ounce of relevancy with modern kids (who all view it as something their grandparents used to watch as kids, thus making them outdated and irrelevant).

The only moment where I had a genuine emotional reaction was the dinner scene between Durin, Disa and Elrond. Gotta agree with Jeremy that as of the first two episodes Elrond is the most compelling character.
Completely correct.
I had already given up and was skipping ahead 10 seconds at a time. I read the Silmarillion twice and loved it. This was nothing like it.
I agree! My dad insisted that I watch with him, and I am tempted to only watch parts with Elrond from now on.
If there is a breakout character elrond is who it should be. She had some sort of mental break and needs the healing help of her people. The timeline is all jacked up and I'm just a minor novice in Tolkien.

So a bunch of friends & I went to a late night session. From the moment Galadriel’s voice over started, I was literally transported into Middle Earth, like my soul flowed into this world and I was utterly absorbed. It was not until 3/4 in, when Gandalf decides to risk a little light in the Great Halls of Khazudum, that my heart literally skipped and took my breath!

What a wonderful tribute to Tolkien! 🙏🏻💯
And Peter Jackson no less!
Why?
Complete disrespect of Tolkien,
Breaking the lore of Tolkien's work completely,

It will satisfy your high fantasy cravings until something better comes out.
The long hair of the elves is an aesthetic invention of Peter Jackson. In no way does Tolkien describe his elves as having systematically long hair.

I thought it was more about morality than mortality.

The difference is that the second exchange is from Clue, which is a comedy.
Can I ask a silly question. I like The LORD of The Rings Trilogy, but why do people either did not like or had problems with the Hobbit Trilogy.
@@htruman because they a) didnt catch the vibe and style of the books (Well, even Jacksons LotR movies didnt do too well on this regard)

Speaks volumes
That’s exactly it!
I love the moment where Galadriel said to Achilles ""That's not a knife! This is a knife!"" Just goosebumps.
Definitely one of the most moments in television history

I think you've nailed it! I too would have been on board for a grim-dark _Children of Hurin_ adaptation. That story contains so much awesomeness around a compelling, relatable, and flawed character (unlike, ahem, the Galadriel we've gotten so far). People think "Game of Thrones" was dark...
THIS.
Might be the darkest of Tolkien’s tales. Turin was a very complex and conflicted character . SO worth the read!
after watching the northman, i kinda want a director like robert eggers to direct a children of hurin adaptation
Despite being sad af, it's an excellent saga.

Oh, no.
I won't ever appreciate The Hobbit movies as anything but a shameless cashgrab that bastardized all of its characters and thinned its story.

When something is being called woke or have identity politics, chances are they are going to be garbage like Rings of Power here
Think you're reading into that one, ignorant
Thank you so very much for your spot on commentary, Jeremy! This ROP is such a tragedy and such a disgrace.
Thank you.
You should also check out his LOTR trilogy reviews, all three movies.
!! Agreed
yeah that scene was straining, but what truly broke me was her jumping the ship.
Yet funny that marvel is doing even worse
That was my favorite scene. When he said, "you missed my wedding!" It made me lol he was just mad cuz he missed his friend. I loved his wife too
I wanna know why Elrond just ignored his friend for 20 years. They made a point of specifying the time for no reason? Great.
That is interesting, actually.
thats why its crap
@@TheAaroquesi They could have done it way better than what they did if they had kept politics and propaganda at a minimum and instead focused on the story and the lore.

Lol

That would be horrible. The Silmarillion reads like an history book. It’s not even narrative.
