I accepted the annual subscription because I believe that GN will release more and more features that are heavily requested by us note takers, which then would be fair. But sadly, nothing is set in stone yet. Now I do have some worries like: Will the price stay the same, will we get further major updates such as a jump to GN7, will everything be Ai in GN, will we ever get proper drawing tools such as graphite pencils; rulers and shape fill borders (when filling shapes with the marker that drawing over borders and edges can be avoided) etc. Oh, and I'm not very pleased by the new design as it looks ununified, not aesthetic, too present during note taking and way to segmented.

I was a little disappointed about the new upgrade. The thing is that, I just started digital planning the first week of August 2023. Got my new ipad and bought goodnotes and digital planner. I was just starting to get used to it, because I want to get rid of paper planners. The options to this new upgrade is very limited. Mind you I was so excited to get the app as a one time purchase and not having to deal with annual subscription. Luckily, since I just bought this app recently, the yearly subscription's waved for the first year. I mean we can wait and see what changes are coming and decide if it's really worth it. Thank you for your honest opinion and insights to this topic.

Goodnotes 6 definitely feels like a half baked update. I got a one year free trial and still switched back to Goodnotes 5. The AI handwriting correction tool is more annoying than useful. I write a word correctly and it throws a glaring red underline, disrupting my workflow. And the math AI tool also kinda feels like a gimmick, unless it is able to solve advanced math. They just threw the update out cuz schools start opening in August/September so students with new iPads for school will download Goodnotes 6. They could technically wait for a few more months and release a proper, updated goodnotes 6, but by then, these new students are used to the goodnotes 5 interface and will likely not update. Kinda dirty marketing from goodnotes.

I think what confuses me about this update is that features that have been requested for years and years (layers, ruler, dotted lines, grid snaps) were not included in GN6 but this AI thing and SAT prep was?
Is a high school student studying for the SAT really going to buy an iPad for hundreds of dollars and then spend $30 on an app?
I’d be happy to pay $30 if useful features were added, but I am well out of school and do not calculate math by hand. I’m an engineer, I have fancy computer software to do math for me. I just want to be able to snap text boxes to my grid!!
I’d even be happy to pay $10 per year, because I used to spend $60 per year on a paper planner before I made the switch to an iPad if the features were good.

Thanks for this review, this is really helpful. I'm an attorney and have used goodnotes since about 2019. I have about 4,000 pages of handwritten notes I've taken over that time, so I've been committed to it and use it pretty much every day of my life. This latest update doesn't really give me anything I'm super excited about, and it looks like they are leaving long-time "powerusers" like me behind in their pricing and strategy. I really like the intuitive and simple approach goonotes has taken, even though I'm a PC user and it doesn't interface well. The audio recording feature is not great, it creates one massive audio file and I find myself trying to use the tiny track bar to scroll through the audio (it's basically unusuable). My handwriting isn't great so I was hoping the AI could be used to improve the search function and/or create really good OCR conversions of my handwritten docs to text. Overall I'm not seeing the compelling reason to upgrade right now...I'm going to wait awhile and in the meantime I'm going to start trying other note taking apps.

Goodnote 5 is still the best for me and exactly what I need for note taking. They bring that useless AI features on a handwritting note app which is so unnecessary and those features such as "Brand new UI??" or " Colored folder" shoud be available on this huge upgrade, not for sale.🙄
And one important thing, who will pay for goodnote on android bc they've already had ss note, ridiculously.😮‍💨

I admittedly have specific use cases where the tool works well for me - I am not a student (still learning - will be all my life) but a professional using the tool and I updated after some consideration precisely because I've gotten value out of the tool far beyond the $8 I paid for Goodnotes 5. Having been an IT professional for 40 years, I remember when software was a two to 4 digit investment, so iPad software has always seemed like a steal, relying on a huge audience to support development. This is a flawed model as anyone streaming on Spotify or Apple music can tell you. Notetaking is a big, but still limited market and subsequently, I understand the subscription. And $10 a year says if I get more than $.80 value out of it, I can continue to support the development. That said, they need to proceed cautiously as to not lose that audience that is already successfully using the product. So - changes will come slowly, will rolled back if they're not good or ready - and I would rather have them cautious than buggy. I don't love paying more money, but I do love the idea that the company that makes something I value can continue to make a living doing it.

    • @pixpusher
      @pixpusher ปีที่แล้ว

I haven't upgraded yet, but I also remember when we had to fork over hundreds of dollars up front to use software. Under most circumstances I don't mind a subscription if I am using the tool. In this case, I will wait because I don't see a benefit to the upgrade yet. The nice thing about subscriptions is you can cancel if the product is no longer useful to you.

It makes no sense how GoodNotes will allow people to eventually sync to android and ios devices if they get pay annually yet only allow one time payers to sync to iOS devices only. And then, they won’t let they annual payers update to upcoming GoodNotes 6 updates? Overall, the info I’ve gathered from multiple blogs, users, and videos, seems like the way GoodNotes launched and made these decisions weren’t considering its longtime customers.

I noticed that a classmate has the update so I wanted to check it out. it's very understandable about having a subscription I hate how now in this time everything costs money and is expensive. my only reason to get it is to make it more aesthetically pleasing. Thank you for a thorough and honest review. In addition, your comments regarding financing of software development is very accurate. I will never pay a subscription fee, but would pay a lump sum for an upgrade that fixed awkward text handling and other annoying interface problems in 5, but I have no interest in AI, spelling correction, etc. I need quick, easy entry with legible results. Too many options for note taking can make the software unusable for its primary purpose. Thanks again for an informative review.

I bit the bullet and just upgraded (One time purchase I'm not paying per year for this). Since I wasn't sure how long the discounts would be around for. My discount already dropped from 25% to 20%. But 100% agree that it's not worth the money. I only use one of the new features and that's the circle to also tool. I feel the rest have actually slowed me down.
I don't think it's fair to make people pay for future updates. So many of the features they are pushing as the selling points to upgrade aren't even available yet! And I truly believe that they are going to 'punish' the one time payment users. The wording that they have as you are upgrading they are making it very clear that you're a one time only person and asking if you're sure a few times.
I'm not a student I use Goodnotes for meeting notes and work brainstorming. I had some extra cash to throw away. Unless you have cash to burn, don't bother.

Your video is a brutally honest way to say so. Very much my conclusion after reading the release. Which by the way prompt me into finding out from others since it sounded like marketing bla bla the release. Will stick with GN5 for the time being and see if they really introduce what current users have demanded for a long time. If not may be time to try something else. Colored folder + scribble do not merit annual subscription nor 30 one time. AI may do but not for now.

I usually use Notability, but I've had Goodnotes on my ipad since Goodnotes 4, so I decided to check out this new update and I've never downgraded an app to the previous version this fast before. The autocorrect might be useful, but in my case it underlined almost everything because my notes in that particular notebook were in two different languages and the app became super laggy. I thought that the update with maths conversion might be nice since I'm an engineering student, so I sent hundreds of samples of my handwriting to help develop the feature months ago. However when I actually tried it out - it just doesn't work. Maybe for some super simple equations. But when I tried converting an equation in a fraction form, it became a huge mess. Oh, and also it detects parts of maths equations (like cos/sin) as words and underlines it as incorrect spelling. I also don't like the new design that much, so this update is definitely not for me, I'm gonna stick with Goodnotes 5 for now.

As of now I regret paying the full pice of GN 6. I think the company rushed to much, they let customers pay for something, that isn't finished or even there, they just promised. The AI doesn't really work, especially in languages other than english, and there is nothing new that catches customers to upgrade, what about pencils, tables, dotted lines, improved typing mode...? There are so many things, they could have added to give the customer the feeling that their purchase was worth it but they didn't. Only time will tell.
I did the one time purchase and hope not to be excluded from some features, because if that's gonna happen, then I'll switch to a different note taking app.
