Amazing the way Franz can play Sipowicz at peak intensity one moment and like a nervous puppy when it comes to asking Sylvia out (again). The role of a lifetime done so well
he is trying to be and act humble and polite to the guy beating his girl , god damn , just be given the chance to beat a fuck like that till he cant stand or breath , satisfying giving him the same treatment back , in this case she didnt die , but was all messed up , thats good enough for me , saying goes , taste of your own medecin .
A real man playing a character with depth, and soul. He was not the drop dead gorgeious hunk, that most women swoon over. He was real, he had flaws, he had scars, he saw the best and the worst of humanity. It is a damn shame that more writing for television could not get this concept, not copying word for word, no cloning but just the frame work of this would bring so much the prefabricated crap we endure now and have for the last 15 to 20 years. So sad for the future of Television.
I love the silence after Franz says, " do not beat her". Nothing else needed to be said, but those words still ring however. Tragic sub plot. Very smooth how we are able to transition from that to Andy asking Sylvia to dinner

"I miss watching you mop your head when you eat" The Seed Of True Love Planted Right There By Sylvia! A Very Touching Moment in an Intense Show Of Good and Bad Emotions! Cheers From Ohio To The BLUE Universe!
YES....Sweet moments.....and absolute horrific feelings for Mrs. Collins and her future. Talk about a 4:00 minute Roller Coaster Of Emotions....I'm pancaked. Cheers
If there was one time all of america would come together and actually commend police brutality, this would be the moment. While completely illegal to threaten the guy, the husband absolutely deserves that
He certainly did and approve of him putting the fear of himself into the wife beater. In this case I would endorse police brutality as he needs to be taught a lesson.
The way he clapped at his wife, “Come on, let’s go!” Like she’s some kind of servant. If I was a far down the anger continuum as Andy was at that point, that bastard’s head would have been going through the window right about then.
@@joeblough261 they pretty much foreshadow it with his aggressive behavior getting into the elevator when he leaves the scene ... no remorse no consideration
Sometimes a long hard, silent stare by someone who will back up what he says ... is often just as scary as the words that were spoken. Andy had that ability.
The actor who plays the wife was Mary Mara, who also had a guest arc on "ER" and appeared in "Enterprise", "Law & Order", "Lost", and "Nash Bridges". Sadly, she drowned a few weeks ago, while swimming in the St. Lawrence river.
Loved NYPD Blue, loved the Andy Sipowicz character. Incidentally there are not many better feelings in the world than asking a girl out and she says yes😊 I remember it well.

I think the Wife Abuser whose name I don't remember- played a Cop- a good Cop in a later Series- I think it was the great Boomtown whiich I think only lasted 2 years.
Never felt a fake moment in the show when it began to focus on Andy. I never really cared for whatshisname the red-head. But if you don't feel the reality of the compassion in the protection of that beaten wife, or the vulnerability in approaching Sylvia... it takes the right words to give the portrayal, but some actors can turn that into an overtone that's greater than the parts...
@@bearkowlbama6352 Nobody. My point was that a Blue Bloods/NYPD Blue crossover episode would have been fun if it had happened. Not as much fun as a Blue Bloods/Barney Miller crossover (think Baez gets partnered with Wojo for an undercover operation at Chock Full O'Nuts), but I'd have watched it.
I wish i could have the hot women like Andy does... but i need to gain 100 pounds and 30 years... and shave my head. I just don't think I can do it!! It's just not fair! 😂😅

Agree. I loved their relationship and I generally hate that sappy shit in cop shows.

Dennis Franz and Jimmy Smits, the very best.
