I always loved Fancy. James McDaniel was never given any props for his character. I hated the other Captains. Fancy was the most classy and caring character.
Capt Bass Was Good He Did Fancy A Soild When Fancy Became A Capt And Left The Squad. Captain Bass's Wife Faked An Attack On Herself And Fancy Kept That Close. Bass Said He Heard He Was A True Leader And He Looked Out For The People He Worked With.
I thought Lieutenant Tony Rodriguez was okay too. Lt Bale was too anal retentive when he took over the squad during Season 12. Over time, he softened up.
I love the unspoken understanding that grew between these two tough NYC cops. As Andy can see Fancy is ready to break down, he quickly makes haste and leaves the office. It is as if they both understand each other enough to know that they want to be alone when they are going to become emotional.
I’ll admit with no pride, that I’m kind of a cynical asshole when it come to most TV shows. But this show could really push my buttons. One of the few shows on TV that could make me tear up.
"I'm wrong about a lot of things, but drinking ain't one of them. This is going to ambush him, Dornan. Those eleven dry years, they won't count for nothing. This'll be worse on him than it's ever been. He won't be able to figure out why the booze isn't working, and he'll start drinking again. And, and he'll wind up with crapped pants, and laying in his own puke. He's a proud man, Dornan. This'll come on him sudden. He won't know what happened. Might as well die."
Any fans of the show remember an episode where they go at each other, and later, toward the end of the episode, Sipowicz grits his teeth and tells Fancy he has much respect for him?
I don't really know much about it in my own experience, but this show may explore addiction and alcoholism more than any other main stream show over the years. It just feels real, the way Andy is never cure and the struggle comes and goes. The usual tough guy is always on the edge, and later on knows he has to go to meetings and isn't shown to just have a single revelation one day and stop being an alcoholic.
Fancy saw that Andy new what a goodman was. Even if that goodman is tormented by his own demons. Fancy was the only other person left that Andy could trust to go to. Andy recognized the tears of frustration and failure of Fancy's trying to help him as well.
Because they have silenced all the men what speak like this, we can't get to some deeper truths and improve relations. Shows like this help and they'll never do it again.
The best scenes for me was when Andy made boss and went back in a uniform, every time Homicide arrived on scene, Mark-Paul Gosselaar's character, Detective John Clark, would give Andy the gears, lol. He'd tell Andy to make his guys set up a perimeter, and other duties that Clark knew would get Andy's goat !! Too bad it's over.
It wasnt just Andy that made him cry. I think Fancy loves helpin people. Like he tried the guy that ends up killin himself that was Baldwins mentor. His characters name was Abner. But Fancy realizes he cant help Dornan. An it makes him sad.
What a powerful scene...can anyone tell me what part of the story is it connected to? There are a lot of episodes of the show I missed and I can't recall anything about this one...

WOW! This show went so deep into character development. Scenes from seasons 1-12 unbelievable!!!!
Gotta love Lt. Fancy.....he took good care of his squad!
This show had so much heart and soul and it's still crushes me with its mixture of love pain in the greatest cop show ever made.
Gerald, You are dead bang on about NYPD Blue being the greatest. To me, it was so good, it was the last police procedural series I've ever watched.
James McDaniel was brilliant. Never got credit either. What a great guy
Fancy started thinking about his father which is why he got so emotional. Andy remembering the place he was at before is why he was so emotional.

Especially the very last scene, gets me every time to this day.

Yes...both great scenes

That's why they use recovering in alcoholics and addicts instead of recovered its an ongoing process that is never completed and past tense
I always wished they’d taken Dornan further, I thought he was a great character.

Nope.... wrong. Fancy was thinking about his own father's struggle with alcoholism and how he could never help his father.
The best cop show ever on t.v. Dennis Frank and Jimmy Smith were the best. Jimmy Smith and Kim Delaney were amazing together.
His name is Jimmy Smit
@@meryltrue8773 actually, his name is Jimmy Smits. I spelled it incorrectly,
David Caruso also has great with Dennis Franz James McDaniel Nicholas Turturro Amy Brenneman Sherry Stringfield and Gordon Clap
Season 6 was definitely the saddest season the show...Good grief!😗
Fancy was the best Cop and Fancy was the best for his men and women
Fancy if you see this you your the best LOU. Powerful.
These were portrayals of real men. Lt. Fancy was special aside from Sipowitz making the best leader
