The voice is beautiful but could we have some recognition of the composer? Gluck's motto: Simplicity, Naturalness, Truth. His genius is under-appreciated.
This piece could not have been rendered more delightfully -- Jaroussky really does have magical powers to deliver such timeless Baroque favourites. We are so blessed by his voice.
I studied this aria during my undergraduate years at the School of Music at West Chester University School of Music. I'm a soprano. I was probably about 20. I wish I could have sung it that beautifully and with such passion.
The Gluck opera is a jewel. Phillipe’s Interpretation is sublime. The finest I have heard since Ferrier in the early 1950s. Thank you all for bringing this rare moment to life once again.
this a comment from EGYPT AND I AM A SUPER FAN I ALWAYS BELIEVE THAT THE MOST TALENTED SINGERS ARE THOSE WHO SING AND PRESENT THIS TYPE OF SONGS I AM LISTENING TO A REAL MUSIC NOT FAKE MUSIC WITH NO FEELING AND SOUL Jaroussky SINGS A MUSIC WITH SOUL AND FEELING HE HAS A LIGHT SWEET VOICE MAKE WORDS FLOW WITH FEELING AND SOUL
Marvelous! He doesn't sound as though he's singing in falsetto (even though that's indeed what he's doing); the timbre is so round, so firm that it really sounds like his natural tessitura. And the diction, the phrasing, the tempo are all (to my taste, at least) exactly right. A gorgeous performance!
I mean biomechanically, a male "falsetto" and female "head voice" are the same thing, so it makes sense that a countertenor can train his upper register to get the same quality as a soprano.
but gluck belonged more to the classic epoque edit: fun fact: he was actually a strong defendant of the new classical movement and his style is often referd to as the galant style
2:35 to 2:55 by far the best interpretation I've heard. Perfect balance between forte and piano and fantastic job connecting those ending and opening phrases. Bravo.
This is what Philippe said about the aria: (Sorry I can't remember where I got this) "The first time I heard this aria did not touch me much. It was when I took her to the stage when she captivated me. After an hour of opera, with Eurydice dead, I am able to narrate all the emotion contained in this moment. I think that this aria does not work very well in a recital, we need all the opera to really understand its meaning. This simple melody is the lost happiness of the two lovers. It's the way Gluck says to the singer: "You have to forget technique and virtuosity and say things in the simplest way possible." I have never sung this aria in a recital, only with the full opera. If the song separated from the rest becomes a pretty aria, with a very nice melody, but the impact with the set is totally different. It is striking that at this very dramatic moment - it is the second time that Orpheus loses Eurydice, forever - sing this simple aria, which could even seem happy. "

Being a classicist, I am lucky to be well acquainted with Vergil's works. The way he depicts Orfeo's pain is unbelievable. And I find it here too. Jaroussky's performance is really great : you can now hear Orfeo's pain. The musician he was, using his voice and lyre, can no longer sing. He moans, he cries. His pain now fills the air. Jaroussky immediately brings me back to this. He sings really amazingly, and the interpretation is all the more amazing.
Oh, Philippe! Your voice and musical intelligence are just the gift from God! But your pure, fantastic and amazing technique - was something you developed at your best to perfección! That is absolutely not baroque. Orfeo e Euridice by Glucl is considered one of the first classical era operas
