Celestion G12-65 Heritage, in depth look.

  • The Celestion G12-65 Heritage is a classic speaker, so much so that in the 00's Celestion added it to their Heritage range of speakers (high end, UK made, faithful reissues of the classics). They have however been a speaker that has seen varying degrees of popularity in different quarters. Here we try and cut through a little to what we like using them for and see how they handle different playing styles and levels of gain.
Please let us know what you think. If you have any suggestions please let us know, if you've used the G12-65's before tell us how you got on.

I've never like any Celestion speaker and always went with Eminence. I decided to try one of these and got hooked. Excellent speaker, not harsh, great midrange, very vocal, nice little "hair" on the cleans. Hard to describe.

Ya great pick. Prolly at Rola Italy if I'm not mistaken? But you didn't hear that from me.
Sadly Celestion's Chinese factories do not seem to care about magnet materials. No Mic in front of them can fix their sound.

Something about this speaker seriously catches my attention that it may be perfect for my coming amp, along with the kind of classic rock I play out every weekend, and the verstality it could offer for the 2 or 3 decades of rock that I play out. this one just may be it. thanks man, good vid. Never really understood closed back cabinets. I think those early greenbacks that naturally lacked bottom end - when put into a quad configuration in a closed back cabinet really boosted the bass that was naturally lacking from those speakers. But so many speakers made since really like moving in an open back, especially when alone in a small cabinet

I tend to think of this driver as a Fender speaker that sounds better pushed. Fender spec units are often rubbed cones to keep the sound linear to a point by which they fall apart, Celestian is designed to distort more gracefully.

All this time i have been wondering why i prefer the JVM for leads and not any other amp , i tried running different head specifically to that combo that contains the 65 (Marshall heritage) , and i got curious, it was the low end qnd the smoothness that has provided such liquidity,, marshall usually pairs it with a more aggressive speaker(v30) for a better balance and i really feelthe 65 to be quite darker,,, i personally find it difficult to get the rhythm tone that is articulate and percussive,, and maybe that's why JVM haters complain about in comparison to the JCM

Good question but no the Super 65 was a budget speaker and the G12-65 is at the upper end of the range. I remember it on the price list when I first started fifteen years ago but it seems to have dissapeared now. I think it was replaced by the Midnight 60, which I imagine is a very similar thing.

Sorry just to clarify, the super 65 isn't available anymore, the g12-65 is though.
