This is very important. Most governments have been really bad at responding to information attacks, be it leaks or social ops. I learned a lot from Ukraine in the first months of war, how they never really bothered to fact check Russian claims, but instead launched this massive but decentralized counter narrative and almost branding campaign, with themes and memes that flipped the discourse. Russia pushed confusion, fear, disengagement, Ukraine pushed back with themes of courage, trust, strength, community. Such a master class.

Hopefully at some point people will get lessons on navigating through the internet and learning to use it as they would a vehicle or crossing a road. Look twice both ways before crossing and don't get into strange web sites without checking the owner isn't so kind of weirdo with malicious intent.
Its not so much that the internet is ever really going to get much better, but the more people who go online forewarned and forearmed with just enough knowledge of what they're doing there will hopefully help them in the long run. Because it is a very powerful and useful utility that can do a lot of good in the world, but like a business or government, the morality and ethical uses of some parts are not necessarily in the user's favour.

The concluding observations nailed it. From my (US) perspective, the conspiracy theorists (not their influencers) mean well - have principled intentions - but are not the best informed citizens.
Coupled with their anxious-neurotic predilections, this makes them the "high maintenance" citizens. (Fans of _When Harry Met Sally_ know this.) Thus correcting their high maintenance demand requires exponentially more effort. I think Emma's recommendation to get them involved is the only practicable solution.

There the misinformation is only directed to a small group, who then pass it on to the rest of you. An additonal problem with this is that in some cases this makes a problem that can easily be reversed irreversible. The obvious and simple solution is to outlaw government active information operations conducted on its own citizens. All (unclassified and non PII) government or government contractor owned information must be easily available on the internet to any citizen. No citizen should have to ask permission to access this information. It should be a crime for any government official, employee, or contractor to conceal such information.
No government employee or government contractor should be allowed to push information to anyone outside of the government. It should be a crime to do so.
No government employee, unelected official, or government contractor should be allowed to speak for the government. Only elected officials can speak for the government. The buck stops with elected officials. A government employee, unelected official, or government contractor should only be allowed to speak to the public about government business at the invitation, and in the presence of an elected official.
No government employee, elected or unelected official, or government contractor should be allowed to use a spokesman. The buck stops with elected officials, who can speak for themselves.

The East is thoughtful. They know who they are. The East is glad The West doesn't quite know what they are. If The West was a specific place, they might have to take some responsibility, but The West isn't a formal unit, so any country can simply blame another one. The Global South, not The South, The Global South is certainly more together than The North or even The Global North, but still there's quite a bit of ambiguity. Africa is all on it's own in this schemata except South Africa, part of The Global South, but part of The East. How'd that happen? It is on the eastern side, why of course! South America and Australia are one. The Global South is up and coming, a force to be reconned with. The East is China, all China. India will be China, Russia will be China, Indonesia, Malaysia, Mayanmar, Phillipines, Both Koreas, Vietnam and many others. Lets make it simple, simple simon. China, The East, all the same, Orientals, and The West, it's all white people that only speak English. I love your understanding narratives, it feels so grand to say The West, doesn't it? Anyway it passes the TH-cam censors. Here in lies the problem. The East controls the narratives of The West. They don't like the term Oriental, so it's the one I prefer, but hey, The East means the same thing. If you live there you hate The West, so if you like The West, you are not in The East even if it is East of say, Europe. Only, I haven't heard you or anyone else say The East, or The Global North. Only The West and The Global South. If you could in greater detail explain exactly what you mean by those two, and start saying The East, and The Global North, it would be more fair to those two directions and I might know what countries you are talkimg about. Without that, I assume ypu mean the USA and Great Britain, not necessarily Ireland but definitely NATO, right? Of course it's your prerogitive if you would like to stay cloudy, for convenience, but as I said it may be leaving too much in the vague zone, fuzzy place where equipmemt is lost and countries drop off. This is directed at you, and me too, it's contagious using these utterances path of least resistance type of thing perhaps. Another point, what happens when The West, starts draconian measures more harsh than China's? Has it become the East? The Tiktok ban bill, isn't only that, it's an internet policing bill that will give you 20 years in jail or a million dolar fine for using a VPN for any number of things, obviously written on The East Coast. California won't enforce that crap. Scare tactics really Chinese or Russian style. How are they going to catch you if you used a VPN? They won't be able to see who used Tiktok to go arrest them from their office chair whilst eating a Dingdong, so have to scare kids with the big punishments. Some unlucky bastard or bitch will of course get the full punishment, so it's taken seriously. Am I giving them too much benefit of the doubt, or has the East Coast US become The East? I'm sure you read the article if you haven't it's worth the read in shock value. Those grillings of tech companies, specifically Meta and Tiktok are done only to push some lobbies' agendas. They want more control and more power. Where is the difference here between Democracy and Communist dictatorship? Not that they shouldn;t ban Tiktok, but they really want to build a huge Tiktok data center in Texas that will get the rigjts to massive amounts of the powergrid, thus preventing weapons manufacturing, like is happenimg in Norway. Thanks for all the great interviews, wanted to troll you mostly in fun though I think it is something that needs to be more specific, information that is, in order to not feed in to other narratives. If other country people from anywhere other than The East, specifically Russia, China, and India feel offended by the term Oriental my apologies. Now you know how I feel.
