Andrew S Weiss - The Life and Lies of Putin - and the Disasterous Culmination of a Toxic Character

  • It seems like the past century has been least kind to Ukraine, of all the countries in Europe. Fought over repeatedly in WWII by rampaging armies, which came off the back of revolution, civil war, terror, and genocide in the Holodomor. Ukraine has bene plagued with monumental events - wars, famines, political upheavals. But there's a recurring theme - its struggle to break away from Russia - which, like an abusive husband, refuses to let Ukraine go, while threatening to destroy everything in retribution. Putin is just the latest incarnation of a leaders pursuing a monstrous policy of imperialism, domination, and genocidal action whenever they felt Ukraine slipping out of their control.

I was watching some property programs - my favourite - and in one a very young Russian woman was buying a London property for almost £5 million. She had a Botox clinic somewhere in London. She was too young to have earned that kind of money, profitable as Botox is. In another a Russian diplomat rented a Marbella house for €160k a week on a regular basis. Do diplomats earn that kind of money? When stories came back on the disastrous quality of armaments and kit given to Russian soldiers it made me think of what happened to the billions supposedly spent of the military. Kleptocracy indeed.

@@samsungtap4183 There’s plenty of corruption around the world, but I’ve just finished reading ‘Freezing Order’ by Bill Browder, who minutely details the process of the theft of the Russian economy and trillions rightfully owned by the Russian people. It’s corruption on an Olympic scale. As to the army, anyone studying multiple media outlets can see for themselves. That doesn’t include RT btw.

Putin is the 3rd generation of his family to work in NKVD/KGB . That implies a belief in the values of those State internal security organizations. He certainly is proud of that background and training. Furthermore, Russia has been ruled by authoritarian rulers practically without interruption for its entire history which creates a mindset that alternatives do not and cannot work in the Russian political environment.

Do you know Otto von Habsburg?
He was once asked about Putin - he said:
"I heard this name the first time absolutely by chance - in the late 80s, when I was forced by weather to a hotel in Dresden, on the way from Berlin to Prague/Vienna.
I met there by chance sb who had been tortured in Bautzen (worst KGB gulag in East Germany) and wanted to get out of GDR some way. And this man said: in Bautzen there were Germany /Stasi/ and Russians /KGB/ and they in general were quite human. Only one guy there was a sadistic bastard: his name...Putin.

Stalin was obsessed with the independent Communist Party of Germany, so he sent comintern members into the political concentration camps to organize. He gave Hitler a list of German communist to neutralize and paid a bounty on each. Stalin was a rare individual and Putin has yet to measure up to him, but it will be really hard to find someone worse than Putin outside the Russian mafia.

I know this is 7 months old, but his book is not only one of the best books I’ve ever read, but easily one of the best graphic novels. The clarity and density of information spanning a vast array of time, events, topics and information is strongly reenforced with meaning in it’s easily digestible style. It’s not just a book about Putin, it’s a book about putting the entire reality we face now into perspective through key events and information that shaped it. I recommend it highly as the easiest way to gain overall perspective on a highly difficult and complex scenario.

Now I am amazed that we didn't see back then (and possibly even earlier) the limited worldview of Putin. He was basically a person quite limited in his experience when he came to power, and decades in the Kremlin hasn't exactly broadened it.

@10:40 how charming to see an interviewee literally blush over an interviewer's complimentary question. What you both danced around though and which, clearly, make you both more generous than I will ever be. The real genius of the graphic novel that Mr. Weiss has tapped into, is simply that most people do not have the intellectual capacity to read 1000 pages and never will. Democracy depends on an informed electorate. If that electorate doesn't read, we require new scalable mediums in which to reach those folks and reinforce the moral authority of democracy over the crackpot tyrants like Putin and Trump. Well done, Mr. Weiss.

I watched this interview right after a discussion in Austria with a exiled Russian journalist. The 2 discussions conflict on a post Putin Russia. Here is why the end to Putin will give Russia a much better chance for change.
Putin has built a Russian culture based broadly on kleptocracy with a private sector focus on nepotism. This type of culture is dependent on the man at the top. If Putin goes, it’s chaos until another leader emerges. After 20 years in power, and Putin surrounding himself with weak leaders, a new strongman will not quickly emerge. In fact, it might take years and a junta format to stabilize the situation before a leader emerges. Local ethnic groups may emerge very strong in an area compared to the Russian central government. This could lead to a more federal system which would be at least incrementally more democratic. The key is removing Putin.

There was and is nothing surprising in Putin's behavior or character for anybody who for the past forty plus years has paid attention the what is going on in the world. Putin was, and is, a KGB operative. And that tells a lot about him and his character! Much like membership in the Gestapo or the SS tells a lot about a person.
Everything has been documented. How he had residential buildings blown up in order to get a reason to go to war against Chechnya. How he mad many of his critics murdered. Alexandr Litvinenko, for revealing that Putin was behind the blowing up of buildings.
Western leaders and media have closed their eyes and refused to see the truth. In "The Russia hand" Strobe Talbott praises Putin's behavior, and apparently did not understand that Putin was only acting!

Cause of the war is simple, Ukraine has things Ruzzia wants but does not want to pay for.
The main things are the land and its resources mainly oil and gas.
As far as the attractiveness of the ruzz model is concerned, just look where refugees head to, few if any to ruzz. And for a very good reason, the place is a shyte show.

I'm 7 minutes into this guy's 51 minute presentation and I've already caught 4 mistakes that are at best really sloppy and at worst indicative of the guy, Weiss, being an idiot, and not an "expert" on Ukraine and Russia
#1. refers to an academic paper he co-authored being passed around for peer review in the US as a "samizdat". Definition of Samizdat: "the clandestine copying and distribution of literature banned by the state, especially formerly in the communist countries of eastern Europe."a samizdat newsletter"
#2. refers to George Takei, an actor of Japanese ancestry who was forcibly interned as a child in an internment camp as an actor in Star Wars, when it was Star Trek, a completely different franchise made for TV 20 years before
#3. refers to the destruction of Chechnya in the 2nd Chenchnyan war under Putin as "Grozny", which is the capital city of Chechnya and was utterly destroyed, but did not encompass the totality of the region, might have given him a pass on this one, but it's just sloppy
#4. refers to the "1000 year history of Russia" when referring to the nation with it's capital in Moscow, Russia is 500 years old, Ukraine is 1000+ years old, and if this guy cannot be clear about this fundamental distinction, he's no friggin' expert, he's a sloppy mess pushing Kremlin propaganda or at the very least a sloppy careless mess not worth listening to.
