Sometimes i think some of the hype behind leaks are pushed out because the VPN and "privacy" companies want more customers running off pure fear and extend their plans and upgrade to the next tiers.
There is no actual way to protect yourself now. Until the use of something more secure than ADDRESS, NAME, SSN, DOB (which have ALL been leaked for effectively at least every American) can be used, then it's incompetence for any bank, lender, realtor or financial transaction to rely on those -- and it necessarily borders on unlawful in light of know-your-customer or due-diligence requirements.

In America, the Social Security Number - originally an insurance number a century back - is used by the government and many companies and agencies informally as a National ID number. It's used for just about everything personal and/or financial.
Here in the states with an SSN you can: Request new legitimate documents including birth certificate Take on debt Vote Work Pay taxes/get tax burden Freeze bank accounts. Wire entire bank accounts. And much much more
Two factor for everything is the conspiracy goal for people believing this was intentionally done during an election year to push digital id or microchips
I really hope this does happen so that these numbers become obsolete. The idea that every person has a special number that they have to keep secret is the most ridiculous thing. We live in the digital age, why are we so reliant on such an outdated security system? The fact that one person can find out this number and suddenly ruin your life because they know it is so backwards and I would love to have a new system for identification. We for whatever reason are encouraged to give this number to pretty much any service where we receive money, youtube know my number, valve know my number, my employers and banks know my number etc. I trust all of these companies individually but I know for a fact that at least one of them will be hacked within my lifetime and there's not really much I can do about that.

In sweden for example everyone has their number, and everyone can easily find the other peoples number by simply googling, but you cant do much with it cuz it's dumb to give so much power to it, we got other safer ways
This is what the US system will have to become now, I don't see any other sane ways forward.
agreed. World governments are dumb
The person who created the SSN system explicitly said not to use it for basically everything it is being used for because it doesn't have any security in place. But the government wanted a way to identify people and the SSN was already a thing, so they went ahead and used it anyways.
Because the USA is lazy and fights internal change of any kind. It’s why the country still uses credit cards with freaking unsecured magnetic strips where a cheap skimmer can copy all your card’s information with a single swipe.
There’s no reason to have the magnetic strip on the card at all yet they still print them on cards despite the massive security risk.
CGP Grey actually went over this.
All the more reason to NOT keep everything on the internet or in a database. You can't hack a physical piece of paperwork

SSN was never intended to be a national ID, that's why the number isn't more secure like a proper national ID number or credit card number (which usually have checksums and security features). It's just that everyone (banks, employers, etc) just decided to use it as one anyway.
