We're of the same mind about the tempo of the Op.59 F Major first movement. My imprint recording was Quartetto Italiano, and since then every other performance sounds rushed to me. I say, if an Italian feels something is too fast, it's too fast. (I get a pass for invoking Italian stereotypes.)
Thanks for appraising this set! I listened to the Dover Quartet live this fall in a concert comprising Haydn’s Rider Quartet, Shostakovich’s 10th and Florence Price’s 1st String Quartet. After that, I checked them out on Spotify and started listening to this excellent Beethoven cycle. It’s been an extremely enjoyable experience to say the least.
