Easy way to STABILIZE FPV drone video... HERO 9 kills ReelSteady?

- The best Cinewhoop FPV drone footage has always required ReelSteady for post production image stabilization. But now there might be a new option...
The GoPro HERO 9 has a new form of stabilization called Linear Horizon Lock. When paired with Hypersmooth it makes for some really incredible results. But, can it compete with true ReelSteady?

My boy so dedicated to B-roll he pulls up to work, goes inside, sets up the camera, goes back outside, pulls the car out of its spot, puts it back in the spot, comes back inside, picks up the camera. I love it so much.
Haha thanks man. I enjoy it, keeps me thinking and trying things
Even locks the door
@@LeDribFPV So, diving into fpv / cinewhoop as first timer, recommend a hero 8/reelsteady over the hero 9?
If I understand correctly, the hero 9 isn't compatible, or not compatible with some settings?
Thanks !
@@ThranMaru I know it's been 8 months since you wrote the commentary but I only saw it today as I was searching for the same answers you were and you probably already know this by now.
But I just wanted to say that the GoPro Hero 9 Black with the Mod of the Max Super Lense is able to stabilize videos in a much wider field of view and can even enable Horizon Lock for 360º rotation. No longer 30 or 45º as we see here.
Hope it helps 👍
@@ThranMaru Sorry but this was meant to svnbit 👍
Gopro bought over reelsteady.. thats why the features are so similar
Yes sir they are going to do away with it and everything will be in camera. Kinda not complaining
There is a spherical lens mod available from gopro which eliminates the “break point” and will make it so you can do full upsidedown and sideways and it still records upright
Max lens. It's black magic
Just started flying my Shendrones Squirt v2 (self build) and bought Realsteady Go a month ago. It is a must when you want to achieve a cinematic look. I am still using a Gopro Hero 5 session and even with that really old camera reelsteady does wonders. I film in 4:3 and even the up and down shaking is handled by reelsteady very well, I was amazed. Just posted my first Shendrones Squirt video on my channel (latest video), still a lot to learn but I am pleased with my result considering it is still shot with the Hero 5 session. So all credits to Reelsteady Go for making such an amazing piece of software.
Not bad but the footage still does not have that juicy feel that reelsteady achieves. The gopro footage has a robotic-like feeling
Of course ReelSteady can do a better job because it's "Post-processing", meaning it can compare the next frame from the video and compare it the current frame and stabilize it. Whereas the GoPro 9 has to do the processing in real time, so it will have a difficult time to know what the next frame would be. And in order to do it on board, you also need powerful enough GPU power to get the reelsteady job. That's just my opinion. Let me know what you think.
No and partially no. The gopro does not "instantly" write to the SD card anyways. There is a buffer and the gopro can easily look "ahead of time" by increasing the buffer size.
The GPU is not involved in either ReelSteady or Hypersmooth. In terms of processing power though, the gopro is at a disadvantage. Looking at the time ReelSteady takes to process my footage on a high performance workstation, its clear that a gopro will have to make major compromises to let the algorithm run smoothly on a small embedded cpu.
@@drkastenbrot I know it's not instant, but when you finish recording, you will be able to view the video immediately meaning it has processed the video instead of showing "processing the video". So even though it is not instant it's quite close to being real time processing. As for the second part, I had problems running ReelSteady on non-GPU PC's than on GPU PC's. So I was expecting it to use GPU's for processing like how it was as part of the AE plugin it was before. I agree on the time it takes to process.
@@karthik_kwads One of the benefits of doing the image processing on the camera is that the images are still uncompressed. This means a lot less codec work on the camera compared to the computer, which has to first decode, process and then re-encode the images. If the GPU of the PC is used for one thing it's most likely those steps (although I'd want to ask why at least the spatial parts of the video processing were not also offloaded to GPU, if they aren't).
Another tiny advantage the camera has is there are no encoding artefacts in the processed image. These will be caused only once, at encoding before the video is written to storage. In contrast, in any post-process case, codec artefacts are caused both in the camera and then again when the images are recompressed after processing. They don't make a huge difference, but less mess is always better, right? Of course that goes out the window if you resize or change the frame rate of the video afterwards for example. :o)
I think what you're saying about doing it in real-time is just about having to keep up with line rate, and you're right of course. The PC can just take its own sweet time because the recording it's processing is finite and it will get there eventually. In the camera, all the processing is done in RAM, which is limited, so although there's enough RAM to buffer quite a few raw frames, that can't keep growing as the video continues, meaning at some point it has to be able to put out one frame for every frame that comes in. The Socionext processor core in that camera has a GPU and it's pretty powerful for a portable device, and GoPro have added their own dedicated cores to accelerate key functions too, but it's still not going to rival a modern gaming GPU. I'd love to know more about the GPU usage of ReelSteady when it's working - from what folks say it sounds like there's room for a lot of optimisation.
I think the Reelsteady process is bearable. In the latest version, you don't have to fiddle with the markers anymore, and with the GH8 and GoPro Labs firmware vibrations are no problem anymore. I highly recommend this firmware update :D Most of my latest videos are with RS 🤓Yet, there is room for improvement in RS. eg. setting-presets and a render queue is a must 😉
You can use angle mode for cinewhoop and set the angle to be just under where the hero9 level breaks
Gary Goodman acro trainer mode would be best
Hey Mr drew
Lv u
Hv been watching ur vids since 3 yrs now
I love your fying skills
Word of the day is .... Bumpability... I expect to see a setting for that in the next Betaflight update.
You could set angle lock in the cinewhoop firmware to prevent going past the breakpoint.
Ah that is a cute idea! Might be worth trying. Thanks
@@LeDribFPV 🤡🤙🏻
I think the best way to show off how much work stabilization is doing, Mount the camera towards the back so that you can see a bit of the drone inside the frame, Watching the drone bounce around while the image is solid is impressive.
thank you for testing it out for me.... not the money to try gopro9 just for a test between reelsteady and the gopro9 thing....just bought reelsteady and the gopro6 cause I am a bloody beginner here and very excited. Tahnk you, youre the best
You’ll get great results with the 6 and ReelSteadyGo 👍
@@LeDribFPV oh yeah, this will be isnane. Thank you for motivating me to get up to fpv stuff. keep doing. really love your stuff!
great video
midroll ads not too great
You should check out Max lens mod from GoPro. It will allow you to tilt it more (you can do full 360) and horizon will stay locked :)
I came in here to say the same thing. You can get wide angle horizon leveling and 360 rotation with the Max Lens mod.
Throw on the Max Lense mode and you have horizon lock for 360 degrees
Wow that DJI video looks good. Wish they weren't so expensive. Love the kwad shirt!
Excellent video, could you please share the PID and RATES that you have in that cinewhoop? I have many problems with vibration and engine heating, thank you very much for your help!
I think hypersmooth 3.0 and horizon lock can be applied to gp7 and gp8, but off course they won't release a new update firmware for the sake of business.
Typical RSGO doesn't try to lock the horizon.. That's the big thing that makes it look better
But you’ve always had the option to horizon lock in RSGO
@@B3autyflow yeah you do but I have not seen anyone actually use it
Horizon level is pretty nuts in GP9, but I prefer having the option to smoothen less or more in post, and having the option of dampened roll and yaw or just straight up horizon level in RSGO.
What’s great about horizon lock native to gopro, you get a different lens effect than rsgo less distorted. Both have their applications.
Thanks for the informative video!
Test it with the max lens mod :D
Well done Drew. Great video and great flying!
Best thumbnail ever.
That look really nice, but maybe take a look to the Insta360 stabilization, they do great job and you can select the modes after recording or change it.
you should check out davinci resolve for editing if you haven't yet. i really like the way everything is built into the one app vs what adobe does. also has some great features for color correcting. oh, and it doesn't crash nearly as much as premiere on large edits.
...and DaVinci Resolve is free! 😂👌🏻
Cook video only thing I hate is that hypersmooth blurred the image sometimes but still good for what it is
Yes! Keep making content like this and I’m sure you’ll hit 100k in no time ♥️
Try the MAX LENS mod. You can do a complete 360 flip with horizon lock with it.
Insta360s pivot points are pretty cool too.
I can't wait till I can get a cinewhoop they look like so much fun. Glad to see another Le Drib Vlog :)
7:38 accurate representation of how I played with lego spaceships before i could fly drones
Best way to use Linear + Horizon is to use the Max Lens mod in 2.7k in 4:3 ratio, then expand in post. You lose too much without the lens mod.
Great overview and demonstration. Fun video. Love Nurk, he got me into fpv. 💖🤓
Ooooohhhh maaaannn. Love the ramp!
The latest version of ReelSteady does not have to do the sync point processing with footage from the Hero 9. Just load the video and then save it out. Still have to wait for it to render out but it does make it a bit easier to go through the process.
Said it before, I really like the occasional tutorial videos. Great job
Great video. I called and talked to Jordan about this combo a few weeks ago. I take it you all received the 9 mounts? Didn’t see the option yet on the cinewhoop combo. Thanks!
Killing it with the content Drew. Love to see you guys dig into how to manage shutter speed and frame rates on these as you get further into cine style flying... such a crucial component that is often overlooked imho. Keep it up yo! (Also just bought my first not used beater a** fixer upper freestyle kwad from you all, so stoked)
What if you had two cameras - one facing the body of the drone from behind, another facing forward? The forward camera would be set on a swivel to be able to rotate 360 degrees always locked on the horizon regardless of the drone's position. Then you could combine the two feeds in editing.
GoPro and Insta360 both make 360 cameras that function as your describing. Might be worth testing! I’m looking for the easiest way to get stabilized Cinewhoop foitage
Max lens mod is the way. 360 degrees of linear horizon lock and 155 degree field of view. If you can get your hands on that I’d love to hear your opinion then lol
Yup, I’ll get one as soon as they are available :)
@@LeDribFPV awesome you the man drew
Really liked the transitions and the different camera angles of the cinewhoop. The built in horizon lock is pretty sweet. Gotta go out and break my hero8, now, 😂
whattttt! RR has a mini ramp now!
😎
Drib.. will you let me fly inside the RR warehouse?
I can always pick out FPV footage run through RSGo when I see a yaw move. The distortion around the sides and corners with RSGo is jarring. I don't see this in your HERO9 footage, so that's neat!
I'm a beginner in cinewhoop and fpv general. Looking to get a cheap version of gopro to process through rsgo. GoPro 7 it's good choice for me?
That was a really cool video, thank you for making it!
Nice video, please take out the maxx again!!
I play with the Maxx all the time! My videos with it didn’t do so hit but I’ll probably still make another one ;)
Any ideas for a better Maxx vid?
Try hydroplaning it, go to skate parks, if you don’t mind bashing and sending it!

In my honest opinion, nothing kills anything. Words "kills" and "killer" are often used in FPV reviews. It all depends on a shot, environment, purpose... Each setup has its own advantages. Reelsteady irreplaceable for some shots, hero 9 great for other. Also, have been always admiring this channel. But let's not be exclusive.
true ive heard this a lot regarding dji. Ive been lucky enough to fly dji digital y entire ride in fpv and yesterday i did my first analog flight expecting it to be absolutely garbage because of how people compare it to digital. of course the image quality wasn't as good as digital but i was impressed by the lack of latency. I see a point for people who use it and I think that is like super acro proximity flippy flops. i don't do that i fly smooth freestyle but i see why people fly analog still especially regarding mr steele. it annoys me when people are always harassing certain people to get on this or that.
excitet for the max lens mod that lets you lock the horizon 360deg. But for now awesome vid Drew!!
I’ll test it as soon as I can get ky hands on one!
@@LeDribFPV its out! Cant wait for your vid🙌
Ever thinking about doing a driblet 2.0?
Yoo would you consider trying out the max lens mod with horizon lock?
Of course. I would have already done so if I could get one. They are out of stock everywhere. I’ll check it out as soon as I can
@@LeDribFPV perfect! Keep it up man
Drew you well deserve the 100k subs. Great video and you are awesome at making each and every flight look awesome. Cheers. Stay safe and well. :)
is anyone els jealous of how good le drib is at talking to a camera.
and seems like a genuinely nice guy
Great video. I LOVE It place mate 🤙
very impressive. it looks like their 360 algorithm, which is to say, its slightly glitchy here and there, but yeah, for zero effort its a cool option.
thanks for the video pretty dope man all we need now is this stripped down to the naked go pro 9 built into the FPV and we are away !!!! hey did u fly that in stable mode or acro ?
How the hell do you not have over 100k subs? Oye, come on people.
Love your content Drib, keep it up boss
don't change your outro! you mentioned it earlier but its so OG drib I'd be sad to see it go. but I know you'll always persevere no matter 💜
Yessssss! Drones.
You should give DaVinci Resolve from blackmagicdesign a shot. I have seen what it can do with image stabilization and it is free.
When I play back youtube in 1080p, only the video shot with HERO9 is very dirty.
Hey drib could you show us how to do you inverted yaw track trick?
th-cam.com/video/QnQH5U-XTpU/w-d-xo.html :)
@@LeDribFPV thanks just what I wanted I tried this trick earlier and crashed upside down
Killed it.🧞♂️
A naked hero 9 would be key. Me think.
Will you get the max mod ? And make a new review with cinewhoops ? :D
what happend to shen drones? i can only find the squirt as a rotor riot edition?
Great video luv the style 👌🏽
Great Great info as usual, Drew. Thanks!
great test the Hero 9 is awesome but reelsteady is better. They should fix the issue with the Hero7 and Hero 5 but at this point I don't think they will do it
What about the Insta-360 R??? It does a super job stabilizing and has a better image than the GoPro..... and you can edit everything on the go with your cellphone and all through Bluetooth and wireless so you wont have to use your phones memory..... i was waiting on this new GoPro.... now I believe I will go along with the Insta360 R.....
damn dude im down for a session in that miniramp :D
🛹
What lens are you using for vlogging? Thanks.
Might be a silly question, but would real steady work well with footage from a DJI osmo action?
I have a GP9 and I’m looking for a good drone on which I can mount the GoPro on
I don’t mind it being a FPV drone but it has to be as easy to fly as the dji and so on ( I don’t want necessarily to do loopings and stuff )
I own a x220s and I understood I’m not good enough to fly such thing
Which drone or which build would you guys recommend ? I don’t mind building it
Last thing : I want to be free to go everywhere with it , so no drones which have geo restrictions
dude will you please do a makeup tutorial? i’m serious this is the content i am dying to see from you
Great video! Thanks for the info. Peace from Alaska!
Nice video like usual. But i think the extra weight (150gr) of the hero 9 is already past the weight a 5inch freestyle quad can handle. Without hypersmooth the 5inch will become very prone to vibrations through the extra weight. I still use my session 5 so going from 70gr tot 150gr ....i gonna hate it i think :-)
can you use stabilized hero 9 footage and then put it on reel steady if you need it?
Why u dont use the max lense mod then there is no limitation on horizon leveling?!?
Where can I get the max lens? I can’t find it anywhere?
@Le Drib in europe you can order it on the gopro website but it seems like its out of stock right now.
Hehe, "easy way" is good... You surely meant to say "expensive" way, right...?!?
=P
Peace and Love Drib, thanks for keeping it up!
Haha yeah it’s pricey for sure
Le whoop!
why wouldn't you use bi-blades on a cinewhoop instead of tri-blades?
What is the best memory card for my Hero 9 black?
Make sure it is a high speed one. I use the gold and red colored SanDisk. The grey ones fail sometimes in 4K and such
@@LeDribFPV thank you
Looks amazingly good, but not reelsteady good!wish they could implement reelsteady into the gopro, maybe on the 10? 😁
Is the mount good for hero 7?
Why am I seeing a “soft-mount” design on the 9?
did you flew with angle mode drew?
Nice! What cinewoop buy for DJI AIR UNIT?
Of course i recommend the one we build here in Orlando :)
rotorriot.com/products/copy-of-pre-order-rotor-riot-dji-cinewhoop-built-and-tuned
Need one of those gopro mount 9 ?
compare video + mpu6000m outputs and calculate the angles of the drone render a new video pixel by pixel.
I JUST picked up this cinewhoop the other day from you guys! It's crazy seeing you fly it in the same space I met you. Lmao
I crashed my Beta95X and Insta360 Go into a retention pond an hour ago so I'd better get to building this cinewhoop😂 I might have to try your digiwhoop as a replacement of the tiny guy.
What type of different mount do I need?
Great review Le Drib ! 👍 ReelSteady still wins eh ? Is it to do with the small processor in the camera compared to the pc / mac ? Also i recently contacted ReelSteady about using ND filters on the go pros & does it effect the stabilization in ReelSteady & basically the reply was they didn't recommend to use them as it adds motion blur and can result in some strange results but still some people seem to use them ok ? 😎👌
Great review!
I HAVE SOFT BLUR IN REELSTEADY WHEN I HANHELD UP ADN DOWN
I laughed harder than I needed to when he went "bonk" and the drone was stuck at 7:27 LOLLL
Max Lens Mod... you've now forced yourself to buy the lens and try again...
This.
