CINEMATIC FPV Drone Flying TUTORIAL // My Top 10 Tips

  • Learning how to fly FPV drone was a humbling experience. In this cinematic FPV drone tutorial I share my top 10 fpv drone flying tips for shooting cinematic sequences. FPV cinematic racing drone footage looks insane and it's therefore becoming more and more popular.
    Some of the shots were filmed with GoPro Hero 7 with hypersmooth and some with GoPro Hero 8 and I used Reelsteady to stabilize the footage.

      Hello! yes i had a few guestions ! i keep trying to make more and more videos from my progress but it just getting repetitive, anything you would recommend? and also where do you get ideas for those great shots !

      @@MrJasonodonnell Well to answer shortly... Art is subjective :) If we all liked the same stuff - The World would be a very boring place, don't you agree? I believe that the first song I used is amazing and I love it :)

      @@snowfpv8833 A few tips I would give you is:
      - Surround yourself with other creatives
      - Watch other videos and take from them what you like and implement into you style (read the book: "Steal like an artist")
      - Change locations. Different locations offer different compositions :)
      - Try to film different things.... landscape, sports, architecture, real estate..

      @lucky_ Yes, but I would also recommend you to learn how to shoot videos with a camera. I work as a videographer and photographer and filming with the FPV drone video is one of the services that I offer. And my clients love to see that I bring so much variety and value to the table :) Also having FPV footage mixed into the video really brings the edit to life and makes it stand out more :)

      With your current setup and with a decent line of sight what max range do you get? Do you tend to lose video or your radio first?

    Thanks , very informative video.
    1:00 - don’t try to over control your quad
    2:00 - don’t fly in a straight linear line for too long
    2:28 - master the “Split S” move
    2:50 - create depth in your image
    3:20 : fly above the leading lines
    3:51 - search for reflections
    4:20 - plan your shots
    5:21 - use ND filters
    5:48 - go fly without the GoPro mounted
    6:04 - learn to edit

    Important: if you fly near roads and follow your subject have a spotter with you. I once nearly hit a young cyclist, he cycled directly towards my line so he appeared more like a dot and i was concentrated on following the motorcycle . I dont know how close it was but i still feel bad to this day. Never fly without a spotter on places with potential hazards.

    • @tomstrojnik
      @tomstrojnik  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Agree 100%, I think I mention this in one of the videos.. I always fly with at least one spotter and I make sure to check the area before flying. Glad to hear your situation didn't end up worse.. was a good lesson for sure :O

    • @tomstrojnik
      @tomstrojnik  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      hey, 100% yes! I always try to do a warm up flight if possible, but a lot of times on set there is no time.. so it depends. But even before doing this "looking around warm up flight" - I would still suggest you check the area by walking around...before taking off.. For example last time I didn't check it because I was rushing and I almost hit wires .. I flew digital and I still didn't see them in my goggles because the background behind wires was dark... basically every situation is a unique one :)

    Hey Tom, thanks for a great video! Very helpful! One question, you said you mostly shoot action in 2.7k 4:3 and upscale it. But the Hero 8 can film 4K 30p in 4:3 format. Is there a reason you don't use that setting, and is there a benefit to shooting 60 fps over 30 fps? Thank you!

    • @tomstrojnik
      @tomstrojnik  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Michael, from my experiences ReelSteady GO stabilises 50fps (or 60fps) much more efficiently.. when I try to stabilise 25 or 30fps - it blurs the footage more often.

    • @MichaelWernerMedia

    Nice video, thanks! What is the best camera mount angle for cinematic fpv in your opinion? 20 or 30?

    • @tomstrojnik
      @tomstrojnik  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Depends from how fast the objects you are filming are moving.. a general rule is that the faster they move, the higher your camera angle should be, because you will need to fly faster..
      But there are exceptions to this rule, depends from stylistyc reason - from what angle do you want to film your subjects.. low camera angle or from the above down...so i use anywhere between 10 - 45.

    I think having a gopro equiped at all times is important, as it keeps the weight of the drone the same. I flew without a gopro for a long time, and the second I put a gopro on, it felt different, the throttle responded different, that's why, for accuracy sake, I'd suggest keeping the rig the same even when just practicing.

    • @tomstrojnik
      @tomstrojnik  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey, good point.. because of this reason exact reason I used to fly with my old broken Gopro 6 mounted all the time.. can’t do it anymore, because Gopro 8 mount is bigger.. and tbh today I adapt to using different throttle with no problem. So when flying just for fun or when learning new skills... I leave my GoPro off😊

    I have a question about the 180 degree rule: with slow shutter speeds hypermooth becomes unusuable and the footage will have all the shakes from the drone, and for that reason i use the highest shutter speed possible. Is reelsteady the only option here or is therr a way to have stable footage with slow shutter speeds?

    • @tomstrojnik
      @tomstrojnik  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      For ReelSteady I always film with 50fps and shutter set to 100 .. if i film with 25fps 50 shutter, or 30fps shutter set to 60.. I often get blury image yes. Saem with hypersmooth

  • @darraghcasey7921
    @darraghcasey7921 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm just wondering about your thoughts on reelsteady go? I use it but as you know you can't really shoot in 4k if you're planning on using reelsteady after as the software needs for you to shoot in 4:3

    • @tomstrojnik
      @tomstrojnik  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      yeah this sucks.. I mostly shoot action in 2,7K with 4:3 ratio and just upscale it.. If I color grade it in Da VInci and use some noise reduction.. 99% won't notice it's not 4K :) I switch between 4K and 2,7K :)
      Hopefully next GoPro will have the option to shoot 4K in 4:3 ratio with a sueprview in 50fps.. that would be epic! :)
