This guy did really know how to restore an old J45. I,m full of admire of his way to solution this very tricky restoring of the X brace and also find the places for the clets, without taking the back of.
I totally understand the thinking of the bracing for support of the glued surface so it won't Crack again. But if you read the bottle of the glue it says that the glue is stronger than the wood. So under that assumption you really shouldn't need the bracing.
Great work. After sanding the wood on the bridge, what product do you use to restore the colour and shine? Also, would you risk polishing at the end if the finish is in bad shape? I am preparing to start work on a 1954 Gibson J160E and pick grooves down to the wood as well as some cracking exists. How can I prevent further deterioration and preserve its patina?

Cleats are a good thing. The glue is stronger than wood IF you have a tight fitting joint. A crack with loose fibers isn't a tight fitting joint.

In 1951 they were using hide glue! You can hear the difference.
Safety slippers are essential in a professional workshop ! 😅 Really nice work, too bad the quality of the video is spoiling it a little ...
Well, not the quality, I meant the format.
