I’ll be watching the next chapter in this guitar’s story for sure. Loving the new album, it’s been my road soundtrack since you released it. Keep doing what you’re doing man, it’s making the world a better place.
One thing I really dig about the states is that you guys can just go on reverb ad find all of those crazy vintage guitar stuff (cars and bikes too) that for us in other countries are just weird things that we can only watch in this videos. Looking forward to see that restoration. ¡la buena!
I honestly believe this old axe was just waiting for a guy like you, Matthew,, to bring her back to life. She would be very greatful, I feel. “Play on Man”!
That’s pretty incredible…. Nothing against that guitar, but beat up crappy unplayable guitars typically work incredibly well for slide… very cool sound !!!!!
Omg, I actually started laughing when you started playing that thing. Looks like a total wreck, horribly neglected, and nearly destroyed..... but sounds like a dream!
Almost teared up when you started playing. Thinking about that guitar finally getting a chance to shine again and show some life. It's been waiting for along time to be played like that and you did a wonderful job!
Bro. Your album is absolute fire. I have been rocking it everywhere. Can't wait for that Vinyl to drop. Get on a tour, man. Take my money for that live show 🔥🔥🔥
Here's a little help toward the refurb, would love you to do a full restore on this one, finish is beyond saving, could probably save the pickup, wiring harness and at least one pot.
Wow.....considering what all that guitar has been through, it sounds fantastic!!! I can't wait to hear it again when you've been able to put some time into restoring it!
I’m actually looking forward to see the entire recovery process. Incredible is this sounds great at the moment. I’m sure you are able to rescue this to the best condition that it ever had. Super beautiful acquisition man. Congrats at all!
it actually sounds fantastic!! I think you should try to preserve the look, if you could somehow keep the remaining paint from flaking off that'd be incredible
This may be your best video yet friend. To take an instrument like that and play something so organic and raw that really was incredible. thanks for your work and keep on keepin on.
That's a great way to check out an old guitar that has a structurally compromised neck, low open tuning & some slide. I like the fact that you can see just hints of the original finish. This should be an interesting and rewarding challenge, Man, and I'm surely looking forward to seeing and hearing the results! Peace right back at ya. Nice one Matthew. 🎶⭐👍
I love these old guitar find and rebuild series you do. Thanks for tracking down another one for some great content for us. Can't wait for the next video on this one.
For some reason I really like this journey. The journey that you take is on to find old relics and bring them back to life. It really played cool with the slide. But I can't wait to see how you fix it. Really like what you do
Brother, that blues riff you just played on that LP Junior was amazing. I loved that heart broke and lonesome sound you played for us. I'm ready to see more videos on the restoration of this guitar.
Given the condition of the guitar, I'm amazed that the Pickup and Volume Pot both work. The guitar sounds great! I'm looking forward to the restoration video/s, and hearing about the choices you'll have to make.
Hey Matt, I've watched this and the other Les Paul restoration videos of yours about 5 times now and I never get tired of them!!! Im now on the hunt for an LP with P90s. Thank you!!!!!
There's something quite magical about these old Gibsons. I'm in the UK so quite envious that you have so many guitar-hunting opportunities somewhat on your doorstep. Great work so far. Can't wait to see the restoration.
When you started playing it after putting some new strings on it my heart was moved honestly. There’s something beautiful and kinda sad about an old guitar being played again. It’s like you brought life back into it. Can’t wait to see the restoration. Keep it up man ❤
Some folks mistake a 'conservation' project for a 'restoration' project. Restoring is making an item look and function as if it were new. Conservation is stopping the disintegration of an item, and making it functional again. This old Gibson was conserved very well. Nice work.
Nice work. We just restored a 69 LP that had been originally gold top. The whole body was covered in a heavy and hard epoxy . Once that was removed the top showed some nice grain so we put a golden amber stain over it so it still kept the gold appeal but the grain shows through. Only made from 68 to 69. The guitar has original pups but needed all new wiring.plays phenomenally. Just a joy to get it restored. I’m sure you will succeed with this restoration.
Looking forward to seeing if it's salvageable. You already showed it has a great sound, but honestly that's more on you and that fantastic amp. Good luck man!
Hey man, been watching you on TH-cam since the days you would just post videos of you playing blues while it's raining outside. I always felt like you had more to give, and your new album absolutely rocks! Congrats on realizing a life dream! I've been listening online but just I also pre-ordered a vinyl copy from your store and can't wait to get that later this year. Keep the great content and music coming!
I second this idea! Love your videos and loved this one too, but if you need more content to post I bet you could upload videos of noodling like this for a few minutes and just add the guitar you are using in the title, and people would love it. Your music rules, and the playing was superb as always.
Holy cow that's gonna be a good save. It sung as soon as it was plugged in. I checked out your album by the way. I love the songs and especially the tones you get. Keep it up.
Matthew bro, you make anything sound so wonderful! This sounds amazing. I hope you can follow up on anything else you learned about the history of that guitar.
You mentioned fixing it up and I just assumed this video was old. Disappointed to realize that this video is brand new and I still have to wait to see the end result! lol ah well
My grandpa and I used to rebuild old guitars. I have an old Gibson 12 string electric guitar that me and him started when I was a kid and never got to finish. He also played a 1957 fender strat religiously every Saturday night for over 20 years in a band. Love the video man can't wait for the next!!
UNREAL Matthew, this guitar will be a slide MONSTER! One of your best videos to date, and that is saying a lot. So rad seeing this old soul come back to life. With your blues riff, I kept thinking how I'd love to hear it in the hand of @RandyHouser as well. 10/10, can't wait to see your restoration.
This has to be one of the best episodes you done Matthew, I love this would have to be the crown jewel in your collection that pickup sounds magic worth the restoration
I actually like the old dirty worn down look, gives it some character. Several years ago I found a Univox Hi Flier at a dump, cracked headstock, missing the humbucker in the bridge. Took her home, gave it alot of TLC replaced all the broken parts and turned it into a beautiful instrument. Looking up the info I could find on it the model is from the 70's though I couldn't find an exact date. Been one of my favorite guitars ever since. Love the light weight feel.
Subscribed to see what becomes of this epic guitar. Especially if you keep it as original as possible and put the right work into it. So much potential in this video and series to make this channel skyrocket. But the caveat is, I cant take it remotely seriously if nothing comes from this or it's half assed. You got this dude.
He's so humble I expected him to be a hobbyist. Then he started playing. Whoa. Watched the music video for Where You Been and it floored me. This man Matthew Scott is a serious talent.
Dont know if its possible, but if you could somehow clear coat the guitar to seal in the patina of the flaking paint amd wear, that would be incredible. The tone pot coming unstuck right at the end was a sign that this beautiful piece of music making history wants to live. So excited to see where this project goes!
What a great project, Matt! You're obviously going to do all the mechanical work to make the guitar right again, such as resetting the neck, and possibly re-repairing the crack in the headstock, etc. Restoring the electronics may mean nothing more than spritzing DeOXIT into that tone pot. But what to do about that "finish" may prove to be a real puzzle. I put "finish" in quotation marks because that finish is closer to being completely finished than any I've ever seen, on any guitar. There's plenty of finish left on your '58 Les Paul Special, and its funky, nicotine-stained splotchy color only speaks poetically about the long journey through the world that guitar has been on. Your new find has been on a longer, harder road, obviously, but there isn't enough left to tell the story. So, you could leave it was it is, with the finish continuing to fall off in annoying flakes. Or you could sand the body down and rub it with many coats of gun oil, or give it a few coats of nitrocellulose, to reveal the golden highlights of the honest slab of thick mahogany the guitar is made of.
Or, you could sand it down, then repaint it with period-correct TV Yellow, as it apparently was to begin with, making the guitar look like a brand new 1954 (or whatever) instrument. If you did that, the distressed bridge/tailpiece and the P90's cover might look out-of-place... and what would you do about the headstock? Refinish it, too?? I guess the final alternative would be to sand the body down, repaint it with TV Yellow, then carefully "age" the finish, so it would look like the same vintage as the P90 dog ear cover and the bridge/tailpiece. You could leave the now-painted body in your car on the coldest, most bitter night of the Oklahoma winter, then bring it into the house and put it next to the stove to introduce craquelure. You may want to send the guitar to people who specialize in this sort of work-- I don't know. I admit it seems a bit weird to do a "relic" treatment on a guitar that is an actual relic... The important thing, though, is that you have scored an authentic Les Paul Junior from back in the day, and it's got -that- sound! Wait 'til you discover its secret: you set the volume at 8 for playing along with your bandmates. You turn up to 9 to cut through the mix for a solo. Then listen to what happens to the tone as you go up incrementally from 9 through to 10. I can't really describe it. It's like it becomes radioactive or something. I don't know if your '58 Les Paul Special, with its two P90s, can have that effect with its bridge pickup. My 1970 Les Paul Standard (two P90s) doesn't. It's theorized that the extra magnetic pull on the strings by the neck pickup has a stifling influence. Who knows? But, whatever-- you've got a bad-ass Junior now, Matt!
Man, when I heard " the action's at leas a half inch at fret 12', and that Open D tuning, I was HOPING you'd pull out a slide. That pickup sounds great.
it is good to see you back to your guitar resurrection videos. What a find and it plays amazing even in that horrible condition. Hopefully, you will get it back to great playing condition.
There's no way I would refinish that guitar. It sounds great as is. The way it looks is proof of life and is obviously giving it the great tone it has.
I’m with you 💯, make it structurally sound, clean it, seal it and give it a thorough service and set up…it’s absolutely beautiful, you’ll never see another one like it! Sounds amazing too
That thing is begging to be restored to great playability. I'd try and find a way to stop the remaining paint from chipping off and leave as much of the old, warn, chipped, funky mojo on it as possible... What an amazing find. Thanks for sharing.
Totally agree. I hate when someone takes a vintage guitar and makes it look like new. It's destroying the vintage feel of the guitar (in my opinion that goes for all antiques). If you want a new guitar, buy a new one.
@@andreashale1482 Agreed on most cases. There are the cases, and this might be one of them, where it's in such bad shape, a rebuild is required and it will look newer. A talented luthier could still give it an older look though. Unlike the restore of the totally destroyed Jaco Pastorious Bass Of Doom, which was restored completely to a completely new, different looking bass, because so much of the wood was destroyed from smashing the guitar, they had to add wood to keep it all together. I still think on the Bass of Doom restore the guy could have chosen to give it more of a vintage, original look...
This is like those heartbreaking videos when someone rescues an old dog or a cat, and they're been neglected and ignored, then they finally get a bath, and a hug, and sit calm and safe getting stroked until they start to relax. You can almost hear that guitar's tension evaporate when you start that slide playing, finally getting the love and attention it deserves.
This is just my humble opinion. This is the best channel on TH-cam, the content is fantastic Matthew seems like such a nice person, great musician, and what has attracted me to all this, as I am touring, musician, for a while, I went down the road of big pedalboards lots of pedals and lots of options, for live and studio situations but somehow I keep trying to get back to my Roots of a good guitar a good amp and one or two pedals and that’s it. I’m just about back to a guitar and amplifier and to hear what Matthew is doing with his channel absolutely overjoys me,this is starting a new trend back towards playing the guitar and worrying about your guitar in your amp and not pedalboards and I don’t have one thing against Big pedalboards lots of pedals because there are people that honestly just enjoy that ,but myself I enjoy , this channel because Matthew is about the guitar in the amp and minimal pedals, and great content ,great job Matthew ,love the cd btw
I love the guitar hunting episodes, road trips to see old guitars amd amps. Then the restoration amd making music. That slide work was excellent, that old thing still has something to say
Love the tone of the P90. Awesome. Will be sweet when you finish the repairs. I have done a half dozen vintage acoustic basket case guitars. Earliest were 1960's vintage for me: a '63 Epiphone and W. German Framus 12 string Texan. Old instruments deserve to be restored and played if possible.
Hey dude, Do NOT go back to 9 to 5! Just bought your new record. Thanks for taking so much time with these old busted guitars. I love your content and music. KEEP GOING!
Looks like this one was literally used as a battle axe. Aww, I never saw you so seem so bummed about the condition, but I know you’re gonna figure out how to save this thing and get it back to singing the way it’s supposed to. The good news is that the pickup is alive and it doesn’t seem like the wood is a lost cause - though I do worry about how that neck will hold up under string tension, but you already realized that it might be best to use a lower tuning. It’s gonna turn out great . . . and even if not, at least you tried your best to salvage it. Most folks would have just chucked it. Glad the people who sold it to you still saw value in it and didn’t end up tossing it. Looking forward to the next vid!
This is just a precious unbelievable find…thank you for sharing…looking forward to seeing you restore it, love the real paint retro look because it’s real…so very cool…
Please don't refinish or repaint this gem for the restoration! It has a story to tell and scars to prove it. Give it a clear coat to lock in the remaining paint chips and protect the body.
Matt 'Amazing Grace' on slide would have been so fitting for that survivor relic that needs careful nursing back to health - then rip it with 'Just Got Paid' for landing such an awesome piece of history. Love your stuff.
i honestly didnt know what to expect when you started to play, but it wasn't much, but you slid into the 4, i got goose flesh, and by the time you were thru, i was pulled over on the shoulder in tears. i really needed to see, and hear this right now. thank you.
man what a fitting piece was like you just resurrected that beauty right then and there ,brought a tear to my eye back from the crossroads what a save !
Matthew, you are truly blessed and gifted. Another awesome find for something you weren't sure was going to work at all. It sounded pretty good to me. Can't wait for the next video. Rock on!
The guitar is pure history, I hope once its done the journey its been through is visible but not structurally impacting. This guitar reminds me of Clint Eastwoods poncho (which he owns and still wears).
What you played was so fitting. The strings and tuners alone seemed to bring it back to life. I bet the original owner had no idea what was it store for that classic!
Matt that guitar looks like it came out of a cow trough in the barn! If anyone can restore it, that would be you! I have watched you from your first TH-cam videos and always been amazed how you can get the original sounds to come to life again. This will be a challenge but I'm looking forward to the videos to come. Keep rocking Matt!
I can't wait to see you fix it up. I know that some guitars will drop in value when worked on. But you can't do wrong with that one. Thanks for sharing
Love you bringing back old well traveled guitars. looking forward to the guitar's journey back. The patina is funky. I suspect when restored it will sound grand.
that's like 20k worth of custom shop relicing
maximum patina
I think I’d get the neck sorted, replace the broken tone pot & output Jack & leave the finish as is.
I have over 60 guitars but my 1955 Les Paul Jr. is one of my favorites. I’m the 3rd owner.
I knew the second owner well & he was friends with the 1st owner’s son. I also have the original Les Paul Jr. amp that was bought @ the same time as the guitar . Last pieces of gear I’d ever sell.
If he left it as is some Les Paul snobs would’ve paid $50k
All Gibson USA needs is a flood to make an extra 100 million selling their damaged stock.
Lol!

As someone that absolutely adores basket case guitars, I’m so jealous of all these finds!
Well when were you last out looking? 😳
@@whynottalklikeapirat I’m always checking local sales listings. I’ve found a few cool guitars but nothing compared to a vintage Gibson like this.
@@falcongunner33 Then you rightly deserve to find one … no barns around here either :D
I love a good basket case! 👊🏻✌🏻

Such a lack of respect for a work of art. Im glad you are going to resurrect this beauty.

Yuck. It's too basket case with all the wood repairs and humidity damage, justifies a full restoration.

@@monadynebro, you’re weird..
You're not the first person to notice that,@@mrjamesgrimes
For the love of god please give this beautiful guitar a full restore and refinish. Its value is long gone and she deserves to look great again.
It just goes to show that a good player can make anything sound good! Great score I can’t wait to hear it when it’s restored
Even in this condition, it’s a piece of history. Good luck with the restoration!
Can't wait to see this when it's done.. It's gonna be an epic guitar. Love seeing life breathed back into something like this..
Sounded pretty magic when you put that slide on it man.
Absolutely love these videos. Wish a find like that would be possible here in Germany. Cool stuff!
Really enjoyed your album btw!
Man, when I heard " the action's at leas a half inch at fret 12', and that Open D tuning, I was HOPING you'd pull out a slide. That pickup sounds great.
Awesome Matthew, great find. The pickup sounds good. Can't wait to see you bring it back to life. Cheers
it is good to see you back to your guitar resurrection videos.
Sounds amazing too
It's a real life relic. I don't care for those "factory relic" guitars, it's fake. Good deal !!!
That's what I would do. (Polyurethane, nitrocellulos or lacquer)@user-bs5cr1sd2i
I know you were just trying to get a video together, but that was actually quite a bit of fun. Thanks for sharing, I think lots of us enjoyed that.
That thing is begging to be restored to great playability. I'd try and find a way to stop the remaining paint from chipping off and leave as much of the old, warn, chipped, funky mojo on it as possible... What an amazing find. Thanks for sharing.
Same here...
Agreed bro!
Totally agree. I hate when someone takes a vintage guitar and makes it look like new. It's destroying the vintage feel of the guitar (in my opinion that goes for all antiques).
If you want a new guitar, buy a new one.
@@andreashale1482correct.
Can’t wait to see an update on that beauty!!
Wow, what a find. Looking forward to following this guitar’s rebirth.
Was not expecting that tone in the end! Great technique
That guitar is mostly beautiful and slightly horrifying at the same time. What a find man!!
It's a pre Halloween model 😂
Hey Masha, that neck will need to come out and be reglued, its the only way to fix it properly...
Saw your thumbnail a few days ago of the guitar then saw the guitar for sale on FB marketplace. Super cool!
Such a great find! It does sound really good too! I wouldn't repaint it once it's all repaired, it's cool to see that flaky paint on it...
Honestly I would strip the rest of the paint, and put some sort of nice lacquer on the wood. Think a natural finish could be really cool.
@@TheTombomb5000 NO ! Thats looks so cool. I would repair it structurally but absolutely leave the finish.
Fantastic episode! What a great relic!
Dude! That's badass! You should leave the finish as is!! Just restore the playability part. 🤘
Incredible video
Damn, that sounds amazing! That just told 70 years of soul and I felt it. Can’t wait to see what it turns in to. Subbed and thankful.
Matt 'Amazing Grace' on slide would have been so fitting for that survivor relic that needs careful nursing back to health - then rip it with 'Just Got Paid' for landing such an awesome piece of history. Love your stuff.
i honestly didnt know what to expect when you started to play, but it wasn't much, but you slid into the 4, i got goose flesh, and by the time you were thru, i was pulled over on the shoulder in tears. i really needed to see, and hear this right now. thank you.
man what a fitting piece was like you just resurrected that beauty right then and there ,brought a tear to my eye
back from the crossroads what a save !
oh man that thing looks special
It actually looks junior 😂
@@Guilhem74beat me to it lol
Matthew, you are truly blessed and gifted. Another awesome find for something you weren't sure was going to work at all. It sounded pretty good to me. Can't wait for the next video. Rock on!
The guitar is pure history, I hope once its done the journey its been through is visible but not structurally impacting. This guitar reminds me of Clint Eastwoods poncho (which he owns and still wears).
Excited for a restoration video. Love your work man!
What a shame that guitar was treated that way. Glad to see you are saving it.
I restomodded a 65 Melody Maker .
Good for you. Have fun as you restoreit!
I got a metal 🎸for you above ✌️🎉🎉🎉🎉
