  • @natsuquilava7917
    @natsuquilava7917 ปีที่แล้ว +315

I wanna give a take on Heatran's design that I feel is never brought up, and its that while I understand why people don't like how awkward it looks, I feel that awkwardness helps it stand out more
Heatran is basically living molten slag. It's unrefined, awkward, ugly, has all those bumps of hardened air pockets on its limbs and this makes it a very unique design as both a legendary and heck as a steel type in general. Most steel types feel refined, purposeful, like they were built or molded into the shapes they have. Heatran isn't that and I'd say your redesign feels like what Heatran WOULD look like if you took it to the forge and let the blacksmith have at it, but I feel it looses some of that unique edge to it in the process. Now it just kinda feels like Fire/Steel Avalugg, and while I don't think that makes it a bad design (Avalugg is a cool looking pokemon and so is this design), I feel like Heatran stops being Heatran the moment you try to make it look refined because it's the only steel type that attempts to get across the idea of molten, unrefined metal (Fitting since, at the moment, its the ONLY Fire/Steel type in the franchise)
Also, the irony of changing it from being the Heat Dome pokemon while putting a literal heat dome on its back is hilarious to me XD

    • @blankcanvas3358
      @blankcanvas3358 ปีที่แล้ว +39

As one of the few who liked Heatran, that’s a good point.
Although the “molten” body felt too solid and fleshy to give me that idea.
Maybe it should look more melted, as if its trying to maintain itself while it stands? Think grimer with legs.
And on top of that, the metal parts could serve a purpose of supporting it’s shape by holding certain segments. Instead of making an armor that acts as a whole exoskeleton like skarmory or the heatran in the video.
Alolan muk has shards to make up its claws and teeth and Reuniclus has those little orbs in its arms, so it feels doable.
But if not melting, I’m happy to see more ideas tested with this Pokemon.

    • @MrReset94

I totally agree, not all pokemon need to look beautiful, same goes with characters in any media. Heatran looks like the raw iron metal that it's supposed to be a manifestation of, it's a magma monster. I feel like the design is pulled off really well as is, it's not going to be liked by everyone, but some people also like monsterly ugly creatures. It's not my thing personally either, but I respect its design and the pokemon itself has grown on me. The redesign was cool, but feels like a different pokemon, it doesn't feel like Heatran in my opinion.

    • @asdfasdf-xb6bv
      @asdfasdf-xb6bv ปีที่แล้ว +4

That's a very interesting perspective. I've always hated Heatran's design, and honestly I don't think this take saves it-- even if it's intentional, it still lacks the personality to pull off such an awkward and ugly design (just off the top of my head, Purugly pulls it off better and I don't like Purugly either)-- but it actually does seem a bit of a shame to smooth away that unrefined ruggedness completely. There's probably a much more satisfactory middle ground here somewhere.
It helps that I'm not a fan of the redesign either. The Coalossal redesign is fantastic, amazing, beyond reproach, 11/10-- but the Heatran one... even putting aside your exact perspective, I don't think it keeps enough of the spirit of the original to call it a redesign. It's more like a regional form than a redesign, and even then it's too unrecognizable. I'm not particularly impressed by it in its own right, either. The part where it takes inspiration from the Earth's inner core is about the only thing I find interesting about it. Would've been more interesting if it took after what the Earth's core really looks like; it might have it more retained more of Heatran's ruggedness that way. 6/10.
Also, this isn't directed at you, but I figure I may as well list the rest of my opinions since I don't see the point in making a separate comment for them (I doubt anyone will read them anyway; this is just for fun):
      - Gen 3 are my babies so I'm not too keen on anyone trying to "fix" them, but Grumpig's original design was so disappointing and forgettable compared to Spoink that just about anything would be an improvement. The redesign doesn't fully shed Grumpig's sins-- I despise Grumpig's colors and so I despise the redesign's colors, and also the bounciness levels are still insufficient-- but it's definitely an upgrade. Though, the one thing I actually like about Grumpig is the contrast between its gormless cutesy face and its ominous Pokedex entries-- it's one of the things I like about Pokemon in general, really. The redesign comes dangerously close to being another Hypno, and nobody wants another Hypno. Still, 9/10.
      - Rillaboom's original design is fine imo. Redesigned Rillaboom's chest-drum-beating gimmick is genius, but it does lose Grookey and Thwackey's stick gimmick in the process. I'm generally not a fan of thematically inconsistent evolutionary lines, so I feel pretty conflicted overall. 10/10 in a vacuum, 8/10 considering the inconsistent theme.
      - The Toxapex redesign is pretty good, but it's not working for me. I think the problem is that it just takes Toxapex's original look and goes harder with, so it reads more like a mega-evolution than a redesign. I could even totally buy it as an official Toxapex mega-evolution! As a redesign... feels a little lackluster. 9/10 as a fan mega-evolution, 7/10 as a redesign.
      - I dislike Delphox's design, but I'm not vibing with the redesign at all. It's not that it looks bad, but... honestly I always thought Delphox's outfit was inspired by hakamas. Looking it up this is apparently wrong, so that's my fault for having baseless expectations, but going for a rather generic-looking western mage look still feels uninspired. Also that hat feels like it's stepping on Mismagius' nonexistent ghost toes a bit. Then again, I hate Braixen's design too, so maybe I'm just not the target audience here. 6/10.
      - Aromatisse's design is awful. The redesign is... okay? Aesthetically it's an improvement, but the thematic change from "perfume" to "dancer" doesn't work for me. Personality, I think Aromatisse is a shoo-in for a (possibly Dark/Fairy) plague doctor redesign. That iconic beaked mask was designed to hold a *sachet* of fragrant herbs under the belief that the pleasant smell warded away illness. And plague doctors are so evocative just as a baseline-- absolutely a missed opportunity here. 7/10.
      - I think Jynx's design gets a lot more hate than it deserves, but... yeah Jynx's design is bad. I can't say I like the redesign any better, though. I give it credit for being original and interesting, but it doesn't work for me at all. Might be the armless humanoid body; Hatterene doesn't work for me either. Also, not a fan of the colors. 5/10.
      - Very ambivalent here. I don't like Cetitan's design, and the redesign looks so much better despite basically only adding another pair of legs. Yet, somehow it feels like something important is lost by turning Cetitan into a quadruped. Kinda like Heatran, actually, which is strange given it's otherwise so close to the original. 10/10 for the pure objective improvement ig, but looking at it makes me sad.
      - Bombirdier as the evil bird equivalent of Kangaskhan dropping their chicks on unsuspecting victims? And said chicks being 100% down with the whole thing? Genius concept 10/10 no contest.
      - For all that I like Marowak's design, it *is* too much like Cubone's, and Cubone does it better. That said, I feel like the redesign both goes too hard and not hard enough? It looks more like Marowak's mega-evolution, or a middle-stage between Cubone and a third evolution. I'd love it as "Marowak-but-harder", or as a step toward fulfilling the thematic promise of a boneyard kaiju, but it doesn't feel fully cohesive in its own right imo. Also, not a fan of the claws. Cubone's mitt-hands and weird little hoof-feet are Very Important. 8.5/10 as a mega-evolution, 9/10 as middle-stage, 6/10 as a redesign.
      - I don't have very strong feelings about Cinderace, and the redesign doesn't really change that. I do think it's an improvement on the original design-- actual rocket feet is pretty genius-- but soccer bunny just does nothing for me as a concept. 8/10.

I'm one of June's #1 fans, in fact they're probably my favorite artist on TH-cam, which is why it's interesting that their Delphox is such a miss for me.
First of all, I do really like the staff. While I liked the original stick too, I really like how June preserved the naturalness of a branch while still making it ornate and fantastical. It works so well.
I am a huge fan of fantasy mages of all kinds, but especially witches and wizards, which are the biggest inspirations behind Delphox's design. As a nonbinary person, I love how mages get away from typical gender expectations: wizards who are men can still have long hair and long robes that look like dresses, and traditional witches don't need to look pretty, even though they're women. There's a lot of overlap in that department. I love designs that embrace that kind of ambiguity between wizard-like and witchy, almost like Gandalf the Grey, or animated Maleficent.
I feel like Delphox is one of those designs, where the implied long robes with long sleeves appear androgynous. The white lower face and cheek tufts can be interpreted as facial hair, but don't contribute an overtly masculine element either, and the ear fur is like long hair, but more in a wispy, wild kind of way that implies age and eccentricity, rather than femininity. It is precisely the fact that the fur obscures the anatomy rather than highlights it that makes this Pokémon reminiscent of fantasy mages as well as shamans and wise folk from various cultures, while also giving that androgyny that is so unique for a humanoid starter. Delphox goes a step further by mixing bright yellow shoulder pads that give a refined wizard look with a dark, desaturated red robe that looks scraggly like stereotypical witch's clothes.
All of this is to say, while I don't think that Delphox is a perfect design, most redesigns I see (including June's) intentionally remove all the aspects of the design that make me gravitate toward it, things that I thought actually enhanced the concept. It's not an easy balance to strike, since losing aspects of ambiguity can be as simple as adding definition, but I feel like people get so hung up on wanting more Braixen that they rob Delphox of its most defining feature, the robe. The open skirt look June gave their redesign removes the possible interpretation of it being a genderless article of clothing, or that Delphox is anything besides just a modern witch. I won’t say it’s an incorrect interpretation, as “dress” is a natural jump to make from Braixen’s implied “skirt”, but it is still only an assumption to say that it is a dress and only a dress, and any of it’s missing or non-dresslike qualities are a mistake by the designer rather than an intentional decision to enhance the concept. Most critiques I hear of Delphox, though, say that it's either too feminine or not feminine enough, and all redesigns I’ve seen either make the robe prettier and more dresslike or scrap it completely. Again, I don’t think Delphox is perfect, it probably could use a redesign, but all the ones I’ve seen look like Braixen X Mismagius, with none of Delphox’s personality or visual features, sometimes not even resembling it at all.
A big part of it, like I mentioned, is just people’s love of Braixen. Some people even had the same reaction to Greninja, starkly preferring Froggadier, but Greninja has a very strong design, so eventually that fell to the wayside. It’s exactly as BonnyJohn describes later in the video with Carkol, people feel like they were promised something, and so their redesigns of Colossal (the train ones) would only just be what they wished Carkol evolved into, not being Colossal in any way besides name. With Braixen, though, I feel like it’s a little less justified. Just because a pokemon is cute and pretty doesn't mean it’s promising you anything for its later forms, as we’ve seen time and again, but I don’t think people want to accept a feminine design becoming unfeminine (which doesn’t make them sexist or transphobic, it’s just not what they’re used to).
The second part of the problem with these redesigns could just be the ungenerous interpretation of “Delphox = just a witch”. Even though many see the Kalos starter trio as being themed after the classic warrior, wizard and thief adventuring trio, the idea of Delphox as a wizard isn’t given much thought. People are harsher on designs that they believe didn’t meet the brief, even if they don’t know what the “brief” actually was, or there was none to begin with. Where I think TrueGreen’s redesign of Aromatisse really improved, and what sets it apart from other Aromatisse redesigns, is that even though he thinks plague doctors are cool, he recognises that the purpose of the original design was to be can-can dancer first with plague doctor only subtly implied, so he wasn’t fighting with the original design the whole time. As a long time TrueGreen7 fan who knows Ron has a lot of opinions on Aromatisse, I feel it was a good decision on his part to set that aside, which helps not to alienate original Araomatisse fans and gives the design a professional feel. That isn’t to say emotional designs and unprofessional looking designs are bad or anything, I’m just impressed with his work and using it to help articulate my personal opinion, that attempting to meet the original brief of the design rather than your first impression or opinion of the purpose of the design makes the concept stronger. If more people picked up on Delphox’s wizard and shaman undertones, we might have more diverse redesigns. Even if you only care about the most official inspirations, you might design Delphox to look like a fox spirit or a kitsune-mochi (fox witch from japanese folklore), but no one ever cares about injecting more japanese folklore into Delphox, they only ever care about injecting more femininity and western witchiness (at least from what I’ve seen).
That brings me to the 3rd reason I think people always redesign Delphox in the same way and it never hits for me: people design from what they know and what they’re used to. Androgyny is very uncommon for humanoid designs, and Delphox is definitely a humanoid design. Yes, June is also non-binary, but they enjoy using traditionally feminine aesthetics in their art. While I too love pretty witches and sexy witches, I don’t like the idea that all witches have to be cute, pretty or sexy, or that a witch can’t also be a wizard at the same time. I feel represented by the original Delphox, something that’s rare, even if it doesn’t look as appealing as it could if it just looked like the redesigns. While I’d love it if there were a hundred pretty western witch Pokemon, we already have Mismagius, and we only have one Delphox. That’s really what I’ve been trying to say with this entire comment, that I just wished there was someone who would highlight or even just appreciate the unique aspects of Delphox: it’s ambiguity regarding its wizardness and witchiness, and its androgyny, rather than erasing that and making Delphox something else.
I didn’t even mention the ambiguity between good and evil: while June and many other redesigners give Delphox an overtly mischievous or flirty expression, Delphox’s expression in their official key art is much more subtle. Much like an old folk in a cottage in the middle of the woods at night, there is no way to tell from first approach whether they will be a kind and wise guide or a sinister hag. While Gamefreak probably just gave it that personality because they didn’t want a sinister starter evo, it unintentionally marries the concepts of traditional witches and traditional wizards quite well.
Like I said at the top of this comment I find June’s design interesting, I’m still glad I got to see it. While it’s not my cup of tea, it helped me realize all the things that I like about Delphox, and I think setting Delphox aside, it could have been a pretty good evolution for Braixen. June, Jack and the rest inspire me to draw all the time, now they’ve just inspired me to make my own Delphox!
Tl,Dr: Delphox should keep the fur robe, in my subjective opinion ; )

Thank you, I especially agree on the part where people don't usually care to give Delphox some japanese folklore vibes it actually REPRESENTS and that's a bummer.
Like someone being just into anime and asian-themed games through my life I definitely got the vibe they intended for Delphox. And that's not even going deeply into that topic, I've noticed it by being a simple media enjoyer (I'd say a weaboo but I don't even watch anime now). But shindo religion, priests, shrine ladies...I dunno why so many people miss on this opportunity?
And yes, I strongly disagree with people just seeing Delphox as feminine, cause it's definitely also gives me those "bishonen" vibes, you know.

    • @TangerineOmega
      @TangerineOmega 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

See, this is so interesting to me, given you feel so strongly about it. You see this is a more feminine take on an androgenous design, but I see it as even more androgenous and the original as more feminine! The redesigns shapes feel sharper and it's posing and expression exude confidence to me, as opposed to feeling flirty. The visible legs also feels more "masculine", though of course a robe isn't inherently gendered, especially when on the subject of witches and wizards. And the ear fluff coming around the front resembles a beard to me which, conventionally, is about as much of a masculine symbol as you can get. All this, and yet it still looks believably like a witch just as much. I definitely feel like with this design many more people would view Delphox as "male" vs the current design which is almost always interpreted is female.
As an aside it's harder to pinpoint gendered things on OG Delphox so I can't quite say why it so strongly strikes me as feminine. Something about its posing and expressions feels matronly. Not feminine in a cutesy way, but in a motherly way. I actually quite like most elements of OG Delphox's design when in 2d. I agree with those in the video though who point out how stiff it's 3d model looks. The long "dress" just looks flat and awkward to me in 3d. In the 2d art it almost feels like it's wearing a hakama, which is very gender neutral. The "dress" can even be interpreted as billowing hakama "pants" as well as a dress or robe. I love the idea of it resembling a hakama and I wish it came across more in other interpretations of the design because it looks much cooler and has so much more movement in the official key art than practically any where else.

Yo. Are you me? Long comment, androgynous, love the ambiguous look... Hello?
Read the whole thing, you're so right with these things
I can't say I loved Delphox from day 1, heck, I didn't love Braixen from day 1 either! But they both grew on me super quick. Braixen ended up as this kinda mischievous student, one who's very promising but has to learn to either take things too seriously, expand their horizon or to allow themselves moments of peace & calm to reflect on things.
Delphox became this wise mentor kind of character, one who's calm and well composed, but more than capable of throwing some sass back. The kind of fella who sits by the fire, listening keenly to everything going around them while still looking all peaceful. Many would be taken by surprise when this experienced forest dweller can read them like a book. Oh but traveler, the fox was also once an adventurous one, they still got their tricks, but they've settled to be in the peace and calm of nature, where they can practice their magic at peace & perhaps offer a guiding spell or two for those who approach with curiosity and will to learn. If you approach with malintent though, you'll soon notice that the fox still has their old tricks, and who knows what else up their sleeve.
Delphox is so so much more than 'feminine witch'
Heck, most of them are male according to the in-game gender ratio. You're missing so much if all you see is 'this pokemon is a man' or 'this pokemon is super feminine' - unless it's a case like Salazzle or Tsareena, where the mons are 100% Female. Delphox isn't 100% female, nor is Gardevoir or Lopunny to name a few others.
Honestly, you bringing up the androgynity of the robe makes me wonder stuff. Like, is that one more of the factors as to why I like Delphox so much? Because really, looking at it that way, it is quite the androgynous design. I've not tossed a gender on Delphox, I do see it a bit more as a wizard or a generic mage than a 'witch' (but not all witches were women either, plenty of witches were men - especially in Northern Europe, where the majority of witches that were trialed were older men), but really, yeah, Delphox is in a camp of its own, it doesn't selectively sit on one side of the wide spectrum of gender or the other - whereas with pokemon like Primarina, I tend to throw a bit stronger of a 'gender identity' onto (justice for male Primarinas, they deserve love too).
I guess a thing I've personally ended up on doing with the Delphox designs that I've drawn... is more rooted in the whole 'it's too human' debate. Cinderace & Meowscarada highlight it to me the strongest. I like Meowscarada, a Lot, it's my second favourite starter (Delphox nr.1), and it has animal legs. It. Has. Animal. Legs. And I'm So happy about that. Like. This makes sense. It used to be a quadruped cat, then it stood up, but it's still a cat. Cinderace - while still... fine - hits a few stops on the way for me. Yeah the hands/arms are a bit odd and too small if you focus on them, it does look a little like it's wearing clothes and all that, but my biggest problem with it is the legs. They're so Human, with human articulation and everything. Yeah sure they can't be proper feral rabbit legs, of course, Cinderace doesn't walk around on all 4. But the straight, noodle kind of legs worked on the cartoony Scorbunny & Raboot. Here though? The legs are half of its body, if not more, and they've got human knees. And for some reason, that just upsets me. Maybe I'm weird lol, but I'd like Cinderace a lot more if it had a more animal-articulation to its legs. It's face can be flat instead of an almond shape, sure, but man, the legs.
Ok ok , so, what am I getting at? Well. I Think that a portion of me tends to show a bit more of Delphox's legs whenever I make a design; to show that it's got animal legs, and not human legs. Maybe there's a side of me that's tired of hearing the argument of 'it's just a human' or such. Perhaps I lean a bit more towards the 'animal/creature' elements on things. But I really do super appreciate this look onto the importance of the robe. I've mostly just went on about it in thinking that it's fur. It's fur and it happens to look like something - it's fur first and anything that comes after that is secondary to me, you know? So like, when I've shortened it, I've just been thinking of it as like 'trimming the fur for more mobility' for example, rather than 'making it a skirt' or such.
But this has all made me wonder and like, think of stuff. Pondering if I could somehow make the kind of design, where the androgynity is definitely there, but we'd also show a bit more prominently that their body has more animal elements/proportions. Perhaps all we need is really just a good pose to show that all off haha xD Many people do draw Delphox with a stick straight humanoid back, whereas the official art has it hunching over - even though people complain a lot on how stiff the in-game model is (if I had the tools, I'd try reposing the 3D model just for the fun of it to see things, but alas)
Long post is long, oops x2

While I COMPLETELY get wanting to have Rillaboom beat his chest like a drum instead of beat a drum having it A. Look like nipples and B. Not fit with the fact that the other starters final evolutions have an object they're associated with (the soccer ball made of fire and the gun made of water) is probably why they went with the actual drum. Plus it's just a little more interesting that he has drum sticks and a drum he conjures using grass magic rather than being a bog-standard chest beating gorilla. Extrapolating and abstracting the concept of a gorilla beating its chest into a gorilla beating a drum is a core part of interesting design and it let's them do the drummer hair you said you weren't a fan of and it works with Rillaboom. Your version, although I understand the fantasy, is really just an actual real-life gorilla with nothing inherently interesting or majorly different about it and that would've made for a more boring starter - it's a great design though, I love it, and I agree he should've had thumbs on the feet how'd they even mess that up. ALSO I TOO really want a chest-beating gorilla Pokemon. Hopefully we'll get the Flamigo treatment (I love Flamigo).

Just gonna jot down ideas as I watch. This is gonna be really long:
Grumpig: I like the sleezy expression and more interesting face shape, but the pearl motif still feels underutilized. Giant pearl+psychic makes me think carnival fortune teller or some other sort of street artist conman, and a double meaning for "manipulator" could be in how it manipulates the giant pearl(s). How about we remove the black orbs on the body and instead turn Grumpig into a contact juggler. It holds three giant pink pearls that it mysteriously manipulates in its hands, or rolls across its arms and shoulders, enticing passerbys to stop and be entranced as if they can see visions of their future in the moving orbs. All the while Grumpig is smugly hypnotizing them.
Rillaboom: My gut reaction is that the drum chest was just too "flesh colored" and too areola-like, but it's slowly grown on me by the end of the segment and seems fine. Of the available colors, I probably would have defaulted to green as the furthest from real-world skin tones, but as the focal point of the design you really want it to stand out. Mixed feelings, I can't come to a conclusion. As a side thought, I really dislike real Rillaboom's hair because it feels like a noticeable turn in design philosophy to make pokemon easier to render in 3D. They could have been much more organic and floral with the leaves, but instead we get geometric ball.
Toxapex: The changed perspective on the key art alone really elevates this design, and I'm inclined to agree that the original doesn't properly convey a sense of scale. It looks like the body has shrunk rather than the head growing. No notes, it's just slightly better in every way without any significant redesigning.
Delphox: This is starting to feel a bit overdesigned. On the animal to furry scale, this is pushing the edges of how much anthropomorphism I care to see in pokemon, in addition to tool use and implied clothing. I'd like to see this design with more animalistic proportions in the face and posture, perhaps combining a more feral hunched body with the concept of an older and wiser witch using their staff as a walking stick.
Aromatisse: I can't put my finger on why, but I always read Aromatisse as a bug pokemon. I'm glad that this redesign brings it back in line with the bird-ish design language of the plague mask. Not sure about the little Marlon Brando / Jotoro hat, though. It feels a little out of place and doesn't serve to push any of the established themes. Perhaps something more in line with a pillbox cap with lace veil would better accompany the concept of perfumes and femininity.
Jynx: I hate everything about the original, and almost anything would be an upgrade. Under all the ugly, I always associated the original with western opera and never knew the proper inspirations. This redesign does a good job of conveying the ice typing and origins, but I worry that it appears too much like a levitating ghost type. It's better, but I still can't like Jynx.
Cetitan: Four legs better. I feel that it's lost a sense of scale in the translation, though. Something about the original's bolbous head in the key art makes it feel more titanic as the name implies, and I like my whale pokemon to be big. For the four-legged variant, I'd like to see the legs slightly smaller in proportion to the body to imply a larger and more lumbering overall scale, something that can still run and walk but would much rather slide down with an avalanche. The proportions in the video would make a fabulous middle evolution to a more exaggerated final form.
Bombirdier: Man I dunno. Kangaskhan is already weird in pokemon evolution terms, but is fine with they established pokemon canonically "growing up" without actually evolving. I guess I like this idea, and the adult form isn't really redesigned so I can't critique that part. It's good, I think. Man why did I commit to giving my two cents on all of these? This is tiring. Anyway...
Coalossal: I too hate this one. Particularly the way it is designed to have a precarious pile of loose material on top that feels completely wrong and static in motion, and which doesn't really add anything to the overall design. It's just a pile. With the redesign, I'm liking almost everything, but that inverted chimney stack is still giving similar awkward energy as a precariously attached extension. It doesn't feel like it would stay attached in motion. I'd like to see it more firmly attached and more obviously cylindrical like a proper chimney for smoke. Though, if I had my way, I'd redesign the whole line to make the industrial nature much more obvious and go full train monster.
Heatran: I really like the dormant/mountain phase of the redesign, and almost wish it stayed there. Take that mountain, and give it legs and a head that are smaller in proportion to the body than Heatran's original design to emphasize the sense of scale. In the actual final redesign, the attachment between head and body is awkward, and the body feels strangely UNDERdesigned for a legendary. It needs a bit of smaller detailing inside of the large panels of color to give a better sense of scale and push that legendary feel.
Marowak: I'm glad that this redesign had the underjaw that implies a head underneath the skull. My biggest gripe with original Marowak is the weird fused skull-head despite the implication that Cubone is wearing a skull that should fit inside the final form's head. I'm glad that they chose not to overdesign by matching it to modern standards. Overall I think this is a very successful redesign, but as far as the weapon goes I wish that it still felt believably scavenged and not like a crafted weapon. Something like a stretched axe-shaped scapula or a scythe-shaped rib bone, instead of one that is distinctly built out of multiple parts.
Cinderace: I agree with every issue that artist made about the original, but I'm not sold on the solutions above the waist. The fire crest and poncho are still not giving me athletic energy so much as angry martial artist. I would have liked to see the body fur sculpted to be more jersey-like, and have the hairband motif of Raboot further extended into perhaps a trailing headband of fire. Every thing below the waist is a success, though, and the rocket feet feel obvious in hindsight, like Conderace should have had those in the original design.
Phew.. Why did I do this to myself?

I love the walking stick idea for delphox. I feel like the redesign lost the crafty and wise feel that the original was going for. It felt kinda like a young hopeful witch that you'd find in a coming of age anime.
I'd like to experiment with keeping the stick in the tail. I think it could subtly imply a broom that they may fly about on. The original doesn't really read as physic so I think a levitating broom could help.
Lastly I didn't like the hat. It feels a little on the nose. I think using the ears to give a hooded mysterious look might work better. Hoods are good for a more classic witch/wizard.
Thanks if you actually read this.

Jinx: i dont like the redesign, actually. It just reads too much like bronzong to me. And i actually liked jinx being more chubby/small and this goes the other way (and gives it a femenine hour glass shape) that i just cant associate with the original pokemon. Its cool, but not jinx. 1:19:31 I'm now imagining Marowak evolving again. Make the weapon for Marowak a simple bone sword and give them a skull shoulder pad on one side. Their evo gets the big bone mace/ pickaxe and is now equipped with full bone armor.

Grumpig is unironically one of my favorite psychic types, and i feel like the redesign really does it justice. It feels like a trickster, while also retaining all of my favorite parts of what made Grumpig fun.
While I adore the redesigned Heatran, I feel like it works a lot better as an evolution to base Heatran (which is probably a testament to how un-legendary Heatran is lol) Like, certain features like the headcrest and mouth make it feel similar to it, though it could also double as a mega.
Also, I feel the same about the redesigned Marowak. Incredible, but the design feels more like an evolution of Marowak, though that could just be a side effect of Marowak being very linked to Cubone, lol
I absolutely adore the redesigned Delphox. I love how it retains the mobile and flexible nature of Braixen whilst also being a natural evolution of the mage/wizard concept. I do think the staff could be touched up a bit, as it could maybe be held passively on the mon's body whilst also looking more like a staff, like an improvement of Braixen's wand. I also love the idea of playing as this Delphox in spin offs and running around Kalos with it in my party. Also, it probably wasn't intentional, but I also love the fact it resembles Serena in the same way Greninja resembles Calem, especially since she's depicted with it in almost all official media with her in it. It could absolutely double as a contest partner if needed. Elegant, yet powerful.
    Great overall batch of redesigns!

I don't actually have any problems with the original Delphox. Honestly, it's one of my favorite Pokemons. That said I also like a lot of the features of the redesign. Specially like the hat, the belt sash thing, and most importantly the staff. That last one is truly the best part. I feel that this could be a good Mega for the original Delphox.

Also love the Cinderace - I actually quite like the scorbunny line, but Cinderace's design feels a bit too...idk, fussy? for me? Imo Heatran just needs a better body. I love its face and the legs are pretty good for the theme they were going for. I just don't like that its body is just a blob, with no defining features.
Give it at least a hint of a neck, with some shoulder plates of the "unrefined metal" theme they have going on it, give the body shape some definition (broader shoulders, slightly thinner waist) and add a bit of a fiery mane along its back and it would look so much better.

I REALLY lore Heatran in your changes, but I do agree, I like the original Heatran being a weirdo rare animal? I think it I wanted to combine them, I like the idea that your redesign of Heatran would be like... "The Core" Heatran, while the ones we find on the surface are like... Offspring/Offshoots of the core?
I DO Like when Pokemon does Gods, but I wish they were a little more rare? And I DO like them being a little LESS Unique, rather just... Rare? Arceus and how they did it are my faves? Where you're given like... a Piece? But yeah, idk! VERY cool and inspiring overall tho, LOVE these!

  • @bugjams
    @bugjams ปีที่แล้ว +15

A lot of these are pretty big downgrades in my opinion, but I mean, I suppose that's the whole point. Heatran and Marowak especially look like they were designed to look edgy, and therefore cooler somehow, but doing so misses the core aspects of their designs. I also really love Toxapex's tiny body, which emphasizes how defensive of a Pokemon it is. Shrinking it down so much essentially makes it look like a little guy in a huge palace, defended by castle walls - which I actually would've emphasized _more_ instead of less.
Lastly, I really dig Delphox's original "forest witch" sort of vibe. Turning it into just another generic DnD wizard is... fine, I guess. But assuming these things are all technically "animals," Delphox's original design feels a lot more natural. On that note, actually, I would really love the Machoke line to get re-imagined, I really can't stand their dumb belt/underpants thing, does it just manifest on their body? Do they steal them from people? What?????
REALLY love the Coalossal design, though, that one is a huge hit. The design we got is just god awful.

Having Rillaboom's drums as a gorilla beating its chest is such a perfect idea I can't believe they didn't go with that in some way, it feels like the kind of clever thing Game Freak would do. The baby Bombirdier is adorable. And I'm not so sure about the triangular... thing (I know it's supposed to be like a train's smokestack, but it doesn't really read that way to me lol) on top of the Coalossal redesign, but everything below that is amazing.

Toxapex is my favourite Pokémon! I like the redesign they did on its own, adding implied hair to Toxapex is cool and something I never considered. What i actually do like about the design that the artist doesn’t is how small the body/head is under all the tentacles. To me, it makes the design feel larger, like a person hiding inside of a bunker or large tent. Cool redesign, it’s interesting to see what a person has problems with a design that’s largely one of my favourites.

Pikachu and Eevee both had redesigns. A lot of early Pokemon were tweaked just slightly as they got updates - the main redesigns throughout the series was the gender variants. And now, of course, one could consider regional variants and convergent evos as redesigns, the paradoxes.

I actually think the original Rillaboom was really boring in comparison to its prevos, but I don't really feel like you improved it. If I were to redesign it, I'd use more bright and eye-catching colours, and probably exaggerate the mane, and give it more of a DK-esque personality.
Maybe I'd make his dreads into a Rasta headpiece or something to give it more of an identity. Cuz the prevos looked like they were going in a Jamaican direction.

I wanted to say the Delphox redesign looked so much more than a type swapped Mewscarada than a Delphox, but after the explanation it was obvious why.
Though I really don't like that you removed all Fox aspects from it, it's literally a cat mage now...
Also agree, Aromatisse is also my most hated Pokémon...
It's supposively based on the concept of Perfume and the Plague Doctor Mask, which were both invented to cover intoxicating amounts of foul gases, but everyone makes it just a happy pink bird. While a Vulture looking bird would fit this concept a million times better!
And while you could argue Pokémon already had a Vulture Pokémon, it literally introduced a 2nd two stage pink fluffy Pokémon in the same generation, making it even more hateable as the Cotton Candy one represents the pure Fairy Type way better.
Aromatisse should have been what Galarian Weezing became 2 Gens later, a Fairy/Poison Type that should ooze foul gases from it's core, which is contained by a big perfume cloud.
