***Look Up 2 - Coming September 2024!!! // Subscribe to be notified when it's released!***
'Look Up 2: Ten Years Later' - Will look at what has changed over the last ten years since the first video went viral, and what new lessons can be learnt in a world where smartphones and social media are now an unavoidably big part of our daily lives.
There will be a whole new poem, new story, and a new surprise ending...

Many of you have been asking me for the words to 'Look Up', so here they are! Feel free to share. Gary.
    Look Up.
I have 422 friends, yet I am lonely.
I speak to all of them everyday, yet none of them really know me.
The problem I have sits in the spaces between,
looking into their eyes, or at a name on a screen.
I took a step back, and opened my eyes,
I looked around, and then realised
that this media we call social, is anything but
when we open our computers, and it’s our doors we shut.
All this technology we have, it’s just an illusion,
of community, companionship, a sense of inclusion
yet when you step away from this device of delusion,
you awaken to see, a world of confusion.
A world where we’re slaves to the technology we mastered,
where our information gets sold by some rich greedy bastard.
    A world of self-interest, self-image, self-promotion,
where we share all our best bits, but leave out the emotion.
We are at our most happy with an experience we share,
but is it the same if no one is there.
Be there for you friends, and they’ll be there too,
but no one will be, if a group message will do.
We edit and exaggerate, we crave adulation,
we pretend we don’t notice the social isolation.
We put our words into order, until our lives are glistening,
we don’t even know if anyone is listening.
Being alone isn’t the problem, let me just emphasize,
that if you read a book, paint a picture, or do some exercise,
you are being productive, and present, not reserved or recluse,
you’re being awake and attentive, and putting your time to good use.
So when you’re in public, and you start to feel alone,
put your hands behind your head, and step away from the phone.
You don’t need to stare at your menu, or at your contact list,
just talk to one another, and learn to co-exist.
I can’t stand to hear the silence, of a busy commuter train,
when no one wants to talk through the fear of looking insane.
We’re becoming unsocial, it no longer satisfies
to engage with one another, and look into someone’s eyes.
We’re surrounded by children, who since they were born,
watch us living like robots, and think it’s the norm.
It’s not very likely you will make world’s greatest dad,
if you cant entertain a child without a using an iPad.
When I was a child, I would never be home,
I’d be out with my friends, on our bikes we would roam.
    We’d ware holes in our trainers, and graze up our knees;
we’d build our own clubhouse, high up in the trees.
Now the parks are so quiet, it gives me a chill
to see no children outside and the swings hanging still.
There’s no skipping or hopscotch, no church and no steeple,
we’re a generation of idiots, smart phones and dumb people.
So look up from your phone, shut down that display,
take in your surroundings, and make the most of today.
Just one real connection is all it can take,
to show you the difference that being there can make.
Be there in the moment, when she gives you the look,
that you remember forever, as when love overtook.
The time you first hold her hand, or first kiss her lips,
the time you first disagree, but still love her to bits.
The time you don’t need to tell hundreds, about what you’ve just done,
because you want to share the moment, with just this one.
The time you sell your computer, so you can buy a ring,
for the girl of your dreams, who is now the real thing.
The time you want to start a family, and the moment when,
you first hold your baby girl, and get to fall in love again.
The time she keeps you up at night, and all you want is rest,
and the time you wipe away the tears, as your baby flees the nest.
The time your little girl returns, with a boy for you to hold,
and the day he calls you granddad, and makes you feel real old
The time you take in all you’ve made, just by giving life attention,
and how your glad you didn’t waste it, by looking down at some invention.
The time you hold your wife’s hand, and sit down beside her bed
you tell her that you love her, and lay a kiss upon her head.
She then whispers to you quietly, as her heart gives a final beat,
that she’s lucky she got stopped, by that lost boy in the street.
But none of these times ever happened, you never had any of this,
When you’re too busy looking down, you don’t see the chances you miss.
So look up from your phone, shut down those displays,
we have a finite existence, a set number of days.
Why waste all our time getting caught in the net,
as when the end comes, nothing’s worse than regret.
I am guilty too, of being part of this machine,
this digital world, where we are heard but not seen.
Where we type and don’t talk, where we read as we chat,
where we spend hours together, without making eye contact.
Don’t give in to a life where you follow the hype,
give people your love, don’t give them your like.
Disconnect from the need to be heard and defined
Go out into the world, leave distractions behind.
Look up from your phone, shut down that display,
stop watching this video, live life the real way.

Well then why do you say? I'm sure he has been doing better than you, just check responses see what they say who is true and who just does. Watching the impact that he has done, giving me life, it's only just begun. I am 14 just realizing life isn't about computers. there's more to it than being addicted to the stuff we've done, there are greater things so open your eyes and see what he's accomplished in his lifetime showing us what is good vs evil. Being on apple all day and knight, made me need glasses. So go live your life until it's all gone, I'm sure you'll regret it once it's all done, haven't realized till it's too late.

Balance, it's all about balance. These devices give us unprecedented communication and connectedness, but social media isn't supposed to be a replacement for actually conversing with real people.
I spend my time in front of a computer. It's my hobby, it's my job, it's my life. But that doesn't mean I don't start to feel awful when I fail to set aside the time to hang out and have a good time.
I think if anything this is simply a good wake-up call to those people who are spending all their time on devices and wondering why they feel like utter shit. I've been there. I didn't need a video to tell me the answer, but some people do. And I hope this helps them to take a step to learn how to get that balance in their lives.

A few days ago I was coming out Walmart with my mother. It was really cold and sleet was falling rapidly. I didn't have my phone the whole day due to leaving it at home on accident. I'm thankful for that.
I was helping my mom out up the items fast because of the falling sleet I was about to go in the car. Then I noticed an elderly woman struggling getting off of her little shopping cart ( for the disabled ) next to us. I watched as she was barley able to stand and walk, and her cane was in the basket of the cart. With that I quickly walked over to her and asked if I could help. Her face quickly lit up with a smile and I grabbed her bags and put them in her car. She was really thankful for what I did but she had to go back to the store to put up her cart. I never drove one of those so I asked in how it worked and I drove it inside. I got looks by everyone but it was worth it.
With this I knew that if I had my phone I wouldn't have ever noticed her and would've been on Instagram or FB

Everyone who's hating on this video just cannot deny the fact how they "need" and constantly use their smartphone everyday, and feel that they always have to have it. For about 2 weeks, AT&T screwed up something on my account, so I couldn't get any service at all. I have AT&T wifi too, so that account was messed up. But you know what? I made the best of it. Not having communication for 2 days was honestly great. It was less stressful on me, and it was better to actually talk to people in person. Lesson here, if you're one of the 8.8K people who thumbs downed this video, then how about you actually try going without you're phone. Its a great experience. I learned that there are tons of wonderful people that I have never even met right around me.

Everyone who's hating on this video just cannot deny the fact how they "need" and constantly use *running water* everyday, and feel that they always have to have it. For about 2 weeks, *The Water Company* screwed up something on my *water line*, so I couldn't get any *running water* at all. I have *electricity* with them too, so that service was messed up. But you know what? I made the best of it. Not having *running water* for 2 days was honestly great. It was less stressful on me, and it was better to actually *boil water over a fire to kill the germs*. Lesson here, if you're one of the 8.8K people who thumbs downed this video, then how about you actually try going without *running water*. Its a great experience. I learned that there are tons of *fresh water springs* that I have never even *drank from* right around me.
As you can see, the internet is just another service that we may as well utilize, same with electricity and water. Attacking a harmless service is completely futile, you have to realise that it is select individuals who cannot cope with extended exposure to the internet, or water, or electricity, or lotto, or coffee, or you name it. It has nothing to do with the system itself, as it is clearly evident that the internet is a major step forward in the information age

One of the things that struck me most in this vid: *"We're surrounded by children, who since they were born, who watched us living like robots and think it's the norm. It's not very likely you'll make World's Greatest Dad if you can't entertain a child without using an iPad."*
This quote is so, *so* important I can't even emphasize. Because we're missing out on the chance to connect with our children, the chance to show them how to connect to other people in society. It's very important if we want the future generations to know how to love and care for and pay attention to one another. It's important that they don't hide in their phones, but that they make strong connections with others, so they don't feel loneliness or seclusion. This is what I want for *my* kids.
So, in service, I'll now be doing much more to help spread love, care, laughter, attention and good things to children. I'll be doing the best I can to love them and play with them and also teach them how to interact with others and even make others laugh. I definitely won't stare at my screen when my nephew, Cole, wants my attention anymore, because I don't want him to act that way when he's a grown-up and has his own kids. It's important that we do this for our children, because they are our legacy and what we're leaving behind. They make up the future world.
I'm Jacqui and I'm just 16. This is my promise for myself and how I'll help the world :)
P.S. I only just discovered this life lesson while watching, so that's something. Thank you Gary for posting !

MadJack122 Not only 16 year olds understand this video, I'm a few years younger and I still get the point. Everyone has become way too absorbed in tech, that if it were to be taken away, the whole world would probably crumble to bits. Heck, even my father who had no tech when he was a kid has been absorbed into the never ending cycle. Hey look, new iPhone! Lets go waste money on it, giving to some greedy pile of crap. Heck, in my opinion, money shouldn't even exist. It brings out evil in people. Industry leaders hoard it while there are starving kids out there. No, no, no, wait, not even kids. Freakin' babies! And they're to busy lounging in their condos to give a crap about it. mankind really screwed up at some point, and it's going to be pretty damn hard to fix it.

The next comment is from someone saying they are a few years younger than Jacqui. Think about who reads what you leave behind in comments/messages.

The sad thing is, I watch this video, I even cry, and then I click away to the next one, without a goodbye. The sad truth is this video is not doing much. It's trying to open our eyes, but we're a thick bunch. If only the world could be a different way, but we can't do anything, today is today. Putting down our phones would be a good start, but honestly most of aren't very smart. All we do is like this and share it. When we could be doing something else with a lot more merit. But here I am clicking away, with only comment that will be here to stay.

Well actually, he's arguing that the internet results in missed opportunities for people. He just ignores the millions of love stories that started on the internet. If we're considering opportunity here, then doesn't the internet put one the potential to talk to billions of strangers and this guy cares about talking to people on the bus. Why would i want to talk to someone on the bus? He also wears the nostalgia glasses when he talks about the park. I mean, i like the park and everything, but just because you liked it, don't try and claim that it's the right way to do things.

okay. the message of the video is not to throw your technology out of your car window on a busy highway, it's just relaying the fact that our generation spends too much time on the internet. of course, it is convenient when making plans, or catching up with old friends, or even finding a significant other. but the key is to limit the time spent doing these things so that the whole of humanity isn't a fat, emotionless mess. i don't know... personally, obviously, i liked the video: it was moving and gave an overall inspirational outlook on life. but judging these comments, that seems to just be me.

What do we get if we invest the whole of our being into a piece of technology?
We get a lump of metal back.
I cannot remember things I hear over the internet, yet at the same time I feel my memories becoming more distant because I get those hours of internet in my mind. I do not use a phone, but I realize that my computer is the same thing. Even I have had the moment when everyone around me is texting, while I sit there in silence. They only speak to show one another something funny, but always something from their phone, not from them. A whole 30 minutes, where friends sit in silence.

I moved to a different country so I love seeing pictures and updates from family and friends on Facebook. For that reason, I know that technology does have social and emotional value but it cannot and should not replace time spent in the physical presence of those we love. I'm always saving up for plane tickets home. :)

Videos like this aren't enough to change our ways, we are the only ones who can make the habitual change. So I'll just use this video as a tool to show people why I've become so bad at texting them back.

How about we stop arguing in the comments and just accept that we need these devices but don't need to be have them in our hands constantly?
That's the point here. Keep your phone on, ready but put away so that you can be a social person while still having the ability to make contact with somebody you need to or receive an important message or call.
The point is to find a balance. Not to throw it away.

I definitely agree with this video. I am still young and my parents are on their computers almost everyday. Every now and then we do go out but not as much as when I was younger. I don't even talk to my parents as much even if we're under the same roof. We used to go travel and go out as a family. Even when I'm with so-called friends, all they really do is go on Instagram etc. I'm lucky enough to have atleast one real friends. I read the comments and they make me confused and sad. I wonder why some people don't understand this video's message.

We met in person and immediately fell in love, but she spent so much time on her phone we didn't even start dating until she went back to Seattle. I saw this video a year ago and now when we are together we turn off our phones. Since then we've spent a lot more time together, and we're going off to college together soon... Looking back, I wonder what I missed. I wish I had just turned off my phone and looked up

I'm 11 years old and I really like the message of this video. I play on a soccer team where there's nobody that lives close to me. They all live 30 minutes or more away, and I don't have anybody near my house to play with. Sure, I can run out and play outside myself which I already do! But it's just not as fun. If I lived by all of my amazing friends, I'd be outside so much more and I probably wouldn't even have a laptop. I just wish I could live in a community where I had friends living right next to me. Living in the country may sound cool, but it's so boring. I don't even know how to ride a bike because I have nobody to ride it with. My parents said they wouldn't let me drive my bike on the side of the road, even if I DID know how to ride a bike, for whatever reason, so there's no point in even learning. I might sound like I'm depressed or whatever, but my life is actually quite great. I just wish I wasn't as bored. I wish I had friends to play with every day! :(
Then again, I shouldn't be complaining, there's people out there that don't even have anything...
This comment may sound pointless, I just want to know if anyone is in the same situation.

between 11 and 16 might be the only times you have the freedom of being able to chill out so much and do what you like with your time - so dont waste all that time that you can do so much cool stuff with on top of the easy fun stuff. you could learn how to make your own videogames with online tutorials, or how to make cool electronic music through your computer etc. but anyway, im sure youll find a fulfilling way to spend your time when not with mates! you just gotta explore a bit

People are so quick to say negative things. Not once did he say Facebook, or social media is BAD. He's saying that the addiction to social media is bad. If you're not addicted to social media then this video isn't for you now, is it? And yes he's using social media - how else is he supposed to reach people who are addicted TO social media? People are understanding this wrong. Facebook or wathever social network isn't bad on itself, but what is the problem is that people are on it too much, teenagers are awlays on their phone, smsing, facebooking, twittering, snapchatting, instagramming, etc... Those are addicted. The same with video games, there's nothing wrong itself with most games, but when you're addicted and playing hours without stopping, then it's wrong. And the same with kids, or, the parents, kids should be allowed to play video games or watch tv at times, but letting your kids always on it is wrong.

This guy knows what's up. The problem is in parenting, not the tech. When I was 5, I played video games non-stop, but when I got a little older my parents made me go outside for 2 hours a day. Slowly but surely, I started going out longer, and more often on my own, and I plan to do the same with my kids.

This is great. I'm born 1994 and when i was a little kid i was always outside playing with my friends on the garden, playing football, playing hide and seek and those things. I'm actually a little bit frightened about the future.
When i walk outside with my best friend at the place we used to play when we were kids, it's empty. No one is there.
The Social Network will take over this generation, and the next one for sure, and it makes me so sad to actually know that's a fact.
Great video, inspiring. Now if you can excuse me, i'm going outside with some friends to play Basketball.

I used to have an iPhone that I used way to much
Payed no attention to my friends or family and such
I was to busy with my games till morning till dark
Was to busy when my sister asked if I could go to the park
Laughing at slender man instead of my friends
Don't listen to my date, I had messages to send
I'm watching television, sponge bob and Patrick
When I could be watching my grandmother, who has been ill and sick
This video taught me from when i first watched it all
That I don't need technology to make me happy at all
I should live life to the fullest, take my girlfriend to the zoo
Go to the park, watch a firework show, there's tons of things to do
I typed this on an iPad, but for now, I'll put it away
I bought a new dog, and I have to walk him today
And while I'm outside, I'll drive to my girlfriends in my big white truck
I'm proposing tomorrow, please wish me luck

When u are walking down the street don't fiddle with your phone.. just be aware of your surroundings. Smile at people, talk to them. Spend less time on the internet. Do some thing that doesn't involve technology.. Get in touch with nature...
You people can disagree with me but ULTIMATELY you'll be the one missing out on your life.. So think about it.. Try and reduce the tech usage as much as u can and enjoy the natural way of life

Technology doesn't make people miss out on shit,If anything you gain more chances of experiencing things, finding out events or places to visit. If someone is un-sociable then that's their choice, but some find comfort in being alone so thats up to them.

Calum McSwiggan Social media - especially facebook causes far more damage and depression that it ever has or will been a benefit to society. A simple google of "facebook depression" or "social media depression" will show countless bonafide sources of exactly that. "togetherness" in "social media" is an oxymoron - you're NOT TOGETHER WHEN YOU'RE ONLINE is the POINT OF THE VIDEO.. you're TYPING to them not TALKING to them face to face!

I think the best we can do and take from this video is to be aware of what we're doing to ourselves through this constant addiction to social media and validation from likes and comments...
Social media definitely isn't a totally bad, negative or harmful thing but we need to control our use of it because as shown in this video, it's replacing so many of the interactions and things that we do that make us human.
Like Gary says 'I'm guilty too of being part of this machine', we all are and we all need to make a change.

Honestly, as an introvert, it doesn't bother me AT ALL if other people are glued to their phones and it's quiet on buses or other forms of public transportation. The silence is bliss. I'm also an HSP--sensitive to sound. I become overstimulated and highly anxious before a full blown panic attack when in a noisy/busy environment if I can't escape. I'm a solitary person. The last thing I need is some random stranger striking up what could potentially be meaningless chit chat about things I don't care about.
I agree that one should look up more though. I spend most of my time quietly observing while other people walk by on autopilot with a kind of tunnel vision, rarely seeing the world. They never take the time to take in their surroundings for the world's sorrows, joys and beauty--that homeless person who would love nothing more than to be acknowledged and treated with compassion. It is important to switch off from it (technology) now and then. Like I said, I'm an introvert--so I have around an hour or two where I just sit in silence, in reflection and just relax.
But social media and other platforms can also be powerful tools for expression. We live in a world full of extroverts who only talk, rarely listen or give other people a chance because most are too self-absorbed. I was constantly told to speak up more as a kid...well I would, if people gave me a damn chance. People rarely do these days. I spend a great deal of time, great deal of thought in what I want to say...then they butt in and I never get my say. So I voice my opinions and vent my frustrations to social media etc.
Here's some advice from an introvert to extroverts out there. Keep your circle of friends small, make distinctions. I have lots of acquaintances, very few friends--but I'm fiercely loyal and have deep connections with those few. It makes life more enjoyable than to have lots of hollow friendships that lack substance.

“We’re becoming un-social; it no longer satisfies to engage with one another and look into someone's eyes”. This quote from the “Look Up” video is so important because to actually socialize a person has to accompany someone else, not a device. Modern technology and social media developed an artificial way of instant contact with others. Which inturn takes away from the physical empathy we provide for each other. For example, sending a text message to your loved one saying “I love you” opposed to being able to look them in the eye, share a hug, and hear them tell you, “I love you too”. I believe the message of this video was to make people understand social media and technology may hyperconnect us all. But there is no actual heartfelt connection through any device; it's all artificial.

the thing is. even with my new smartphone i still don't notice any difference.
most people who use a phone are pretending to use it. believe me. they are looking in their phones because they are booring and can't live life without it.
and what do they do on their phones? scrolling through fucking facebook re-reading all the shit they read 2 minutes ago.
live your life bro, get a new phone, but don't pretend to use it. live in the moment with your eyes attached to everything in the world. be glad that you get to see and experience. don't take too many photos and don't record awesome things. see them with your eyes!

Not true at all ;) People can be butthurt all they want. But think about how many HOURS this idiot who made the video spent putting this video together. All he want's is likes and shares. It might sound genuine, and I do see the message. But I don't know where he is from. When I go to parks I still see bunch of people. Playgrounds still have kids roaming around. Before the internet it was just TV that everyone stayed home for. Before that it was books. He should really stfu and mind his own sad world where he tries to teach others to live free of the social media, by sharing his crap via the social media ;) Just my two cents. Think I will go outside now ;)

The fact that you don't think they work just tells me you are very uneducated and don't really have a grasp on what a therapist is or does or what kind of knowledge they possess.

I shutted down Facebook, Twitter and any other "social media" I used to have 5 months ago! It was the best decision I took for my social life. I still use internet, to watch a video on TH-cam, to read news, or to search some info for my job. Somedays I don't open my laptop at all. The result? I started having more time for things I used to do when I was a little girl, painting, reading etc. For some people may "social media" are a great way to keep in contact with their friends. I choose to meet them in real world anymore, not behind a screen.
I am not against "social media", how can I be as I was using them too much. But the time we spend on them I think is too much, at least that's how it was for me.
As about the guy here, I am sure his message is to reduce the time that we spend on "social media". Let them be part of your life but not your life.

I strongly disagree. Social media has actually connected us in a way never possible before. We all have friends we know and stay more connected with than ever because of it. It allows us to communicate and develop relationships globally with fewer language barriers. It allows us to be more widely selective in friendships and romantic relationships (dating sites match personalities, as opposed to randomly choosing the nicest face at the bar and hoping it works out). It allows us to stay in touch with old friends in a way that was never possible for our parents and grandparents: the large part relationships formed in high school and college were generally just lost, yet because of social media, those relationships become part of our networks. It has been the platform to create and coordinate major much-needed social revolutions in countries around the world. It has created a level of transparency with major entities like we've never seen before. It's made education available to those who have no other way to pursue it. Can you imagine how much farther behind in recent major social movements we'd be were it not for social media? It's even causing major evolution within languages, which is not a bad thing - everything changes and evolves. Yes, people text and read while they physically talk with others - so what? Social media is allowing us to grow and become more dynamic as a species. That's great. Yes, there are some dumb folks who use it poorly, but the fact is that social media is a major happening and it's probably never going away, and will only become bigger and more cooperative with everyday life. It is different than anything we've ever known, but that doesn't make it bad and scary. It's causing social interaction, both on and off line, on a huge level that we never could have imagined 20 years ago. That's pretty cool. It's ok to embrace and be an active part of social evolution. And for the record, I'm sitting at my kitchen table looking out at the park my home backs up to, watching 75 or so people at a community soccer game who all seem to be interacting like normal humans, couples actually talking to each other, parents playing with their kids - most occasionally checking a phone or tablet - and social structure as I know it does not appear to be crashing down around me.

I agree with you, social media has connected humanity in remarkable ways. The fact that I can share an opinion with you, someone I have never met, is incredible. I still resonate with his message however, and think he is also right. We can not forget to just live in the moment, and feel our surroundings through our own senses. He says, "the time you don't have to tell hundreds of what you've just done, because you'll want to share this moment with just this one", that is powerful and simple. We must appreciate the grandiose bridges that we've created through technology, without forfeiting the splendor in the simplicity and beauty in the ordinary.
