Interesting to hear a "normal" version of this song. I've had Spike Jones' version ingrained in my head since I was a kid

Spike Jones version is brilliantly done.
I suspect Seger Ellis is playing guitar as well as singing. Brian Rust says the "Tampa Blue 5" was a pseudonym for Johnny Hamp's Kentucky Serenaders.
Actually the above is wrong. It was Charles W. Hamp, "The California Blue Boy," that Rust said "The Tampa Blue 5" was a pseudonym for, though Rust only lists two of their records as jazz items and Ellis is on neither of them.
Brian Rust was a lazy and inaccurate researcher in many cases. Since Rust, most of the researchers did their due diligence and I'm glad of it.
