James Wesley Randall (1898-1974) was born in Missouri but grew up in Little Falls, Minnesota. A portly fellow, he might have been nicknamed "Slatz" ironically, as Slats was a name for a tall thin man.
Early in the '20s, Randall, who played piano, worked the North Carolina territory and teamed up with Craig "Monk" Buie, a fine trumpet man who would be his musical director and business partner for many years. Together they made their first recordings in 1924 with UNC student sensations, Hal Kemp and his orchestra.
The Slatz Randall Orchestra existed from about 1926-'37. It's thought of as a Minneapolis band, and indeed recorded there at least twice, but it toured nationally in between residencies at Mpls' Hotel Radisson. Slatz and Monk Buie each owned 1/3 interest in the band, with a silent partner holding another third.
The band recorded just a dozen titles, all for Brunswick and most in 1929-'30. Effervescent singer/banjoist Joe Roberts put over the attractively arranged rhythm numbers.
Randall's recording career ended with a solitary coupling cut a couple of weeks apart in spring, 1932. By this time Yank Lawson was in the trumpet section - he has 8 bars in the middle of "Hello, Gorgeous." But this kind of solid, rhythmic music, altho still popular with the dancing public, no longer sold records.
Just a little drama for those who like that kind of thing. Craig Buie had an illegitimate child in Minneapolis; my mother. She knew from a very young age that he was her father, but he and her mother kept to themselves over the affair. Ironically, I was given up for adoption upon my birth and then reunited with my mother (Buie's daughter) in 2013 on my 46th birthday. I just found out about Craig Buie this July 4th, 2020. My mother had done extensive research and DNA testing to find out her connection to the Buie family and it is a solid match. My mother was a professional classically trained pianist for 30 years. I dabble in music, but started my journey with the Alto Sax many years ago.
That is one HELL of a story. Thanks for sharing with us!

Good stuff !!! Fantastic Music !!! Thanks
Simply delightful!
Thanks again for truly another wonderful orchestra that I’ve never heard of! This is what’s nice about music of the dance band era, you think you’ve heard it all, but haven’t even scratched the surface!
And none of us like a scratched surface :-)
@@alexmckenna1171 .....please don't mention scratches on my channel !!
@@Prozoot We never get any scratches on your channel. We are very lucky to have you!
Superb! ❤❤❤
....thank you!
Spectacular set -- the brass bass sounds wonderful!
Roger! I can`t get over these! The sound quality You achieve is astounding! I LOVE the fact that the tone is Clear crisp and the tribble is at a PERFECT Range! Most have used computer software that Muffles these to where they sound like they are playing under water, (I have to redo My video`s because they were transferred badly when they were reissued!) Even then I could only pray to have mine sound 100th as GREAT as Your uploads! Usually You can tell a Victor, Brunswick, or Columbia apart! But Your uploads are so fantastic that it is truly hard to discern between them! I LOVE That! PLEASE Keep up the AWESOME Hard Work! You have no idea how much it means to Folks like Me! It brightens up a Day, and as well as the Years that go by! Feeling LOW Down, All I have to do is watch & Listen to Your Videos!
....thanks so much for your very nice comments, Bobby. I need to take a break for a while, but I'll be back!
@@Prozoot rest well sir, well deserved

Perfect set of very late 20s dance tunes admirably and almost in a prom style performed, cheerfully saying Goodbye to carelessness of that decade, into the sort of darkness of the 30s ahead!!!! thanks for sharing
FANTASTIC!!! You are almost too good to be true!
Just went back and made darned good and sure that I saved this to my favorites, this earned 4 categories and it’s in every single one of them! Thank You so much! Just can’t get enough of your channel!
Gracias !
Slatz Randall and his fellas played a handful of times at the Danceland Ballroom here in Cedar Rapids, Iowa in 1929 and 1931. This band really knew how to take each song they covered to a new level. I'm sure they were very popular.
Too bad they had a limited recording run.
great orchestra
