One technical aspect of the electric chair was the first living thing to be electrocuted* was an elephant, which had killed a number of people having escaped and went on a rampage, and Edison, who supplied Direct Current (DC) from his generators, was using the stunt as a way to extoll the dangers of his opposition's electrical supply, Westinghouse, who used Alternating Current (AC), by using said AC power to kill the elephant, and even tried to have the word "Westinghoused" used insted of "electrocuted"; in the end it turned out DC was not only more impractical from a distribution sense, but the power he supplied was even more dangerous than AC owing to the muscles locking up solid when DC is sent through them and basically cooking people's flesh when unable to be freed from whatever they were in contact with, pretty grim stuff... Hanging is the least painless capital punishment if done properly because it is instant death. Electric chair and leathal injection are by far the most painful. The gases used in the gas chamber would kill you in seconds so even if you were in pain it wouldn't last long.
Never understood why it really mattered if it was inhumane or not. Majority of the people put to the death penalty did something inhumane to someone else. So why give them a swift humane exit.
This is gonna sound super dark but I think the quickest and humane way of "retribution" is sudden extreme trauma to the brainstem. I have an uncle who was a small farm and the way he uses to kill an animal (for food) in family reunions is using something like a veterinarian gun? (I don't know the name) directly to the animal's brainstem. With my knowledge, it seems to me the animal goes lights out before even hearing the mentioned device being fired. Edit: And those who advocate animal rights (which I do agree, cruelty to animals should be heavily sanctioned), in the southern part of my country is common for people to have some sort of cattle, but I can assure you even the bone marrow is eaten and some of the bones go to their rescued doggos and the rest is grinded to the consistency of sand and used as fertilizer for plants. Killing an animal and leaving behind any waste is considered disrespectful, so even the skin goes to a local tannery, which then supplies leather to clothing shops, shoe repair shops, etc.

The conclusion is death penalty is never human, with dignity, it's barbaric, and maybe worst of all, completely useless and never prevented people to kill or torture. The countries with death penalty have the highest numbers of inmates, with horrible conditions of incarceration, while experiences and statistics prove when inmates are treated with respect, humanity and given a chance to reintegrate society with knowledge, diplomas, skills, recidivism decreases significantly.
