Great video, covering most all the popular ones, Doc'! Worth a note, on the Iron Maiden. At least as of 2020, there's been NO credible evidence found in any archaeological effort that such a thing has existed before literary references. Those few even show signs of being made after the literature, and so more likely related to the literature than actually used as devices, themselves. HOWEVER, there have been artifacts that resembled it. What has happened, though, is that every time someone's thought they might've found the remains of an Iron Maiden, they've actually uncovered something left of a Gibbet. Gibbetting was the practice of constructing a human-body shaped cage, to keep the "victim" standing upright inside, sometimes with barbs or spikes to further secure or torment them in place, and then hanging them outside and public until the elements, themselves, did the "dirty work". This process, as you might expect, took days most of the year, and was likely resisted during the coldest months in order to prolong the punishment when it was doled out. Even after the "victim" died in the gibbet, it was often left for their corpse to serve as a warning of what would happen to those who are similarly found guilty of such crimes, and in certain cases, notorious "criminals" were beset upon by locals and pieces carved off as souvenirs... or worse (and I'll leave that to YOUR research). Over the Centuries, Europe has had a few notorious instances, between the feudal vengeance of nobles and the public anger over certain crimes and even miscarriages of justice, but the whole prospect of gibbetting was dubiously unpleasant for EVERYONE involved, as leaving rotting corpses in iron bindings swinging around towns promoted a smell that would make certain places near uninhabitable. Even as a warning, it was more disgusting to the entire location than it was particularly great as a deterrent, much like any such punishments over the history of humans. AND this slowly lost gibbetting its popularity until it was more or less unilaterally abandoned as a practice altogether... though you may find it lasted longer than you'd like to expect. ;o)
The iron maiden was not real. It was made up when some people working in a castle found some iron spikes near an iron sarcophagus and decided that they went inside it. The band Iron Maiden however is very real. They're as real as it gets.
If you love reacting to ancient methods of medical procedures and even some ancient methods of torture, I can think of one movie that shows a young man who had a fascination toward the medical world. It's from a movie called Victor Frankenstein. And in that movie, the Hunchback, who originally had no name but was given the name Igor, was originally a clown performing at a circus. He was subjected to torture and unjustly cruelty due to his deformity. However, thanks to Dr. Frankenstein himself, Igor found out that he wasn't even a Hunchback, but rather a man who had a massive pocket of puss and fluid that developed for over twenty years. After a very painful procedure, which includes jamming a large injection needle connected to a tube, was able to put that liquid and puss out of Igor's back. He then needed his back readjust, which includes having a special back brace to fix Igor's back. With that said, I think a reaction video or two focusing on Victor Frankenstein, staring James McAvoy and Daniel Radcliffe would be a good idea.
This was cool to learn about, and definitely deserves a part 2! My favorite historical form of punishment or torture had to come from medieval China/Japan where a person was tied down over a bamboo shoot, which grew at rapid speeds through the body, and qnother form where a person is strapped to a table, and cold water was slowly dripled on the victims forhead for hours, causing insomnia and psycosis
Worse still, the Japanese used the bamboo torture on allied POWs during WWII tying them up sitting over a bamboo shoot that would grow through them thus literally impaling the poor said prisoner

Most “medieval” torture devices were either just not real, rarely ever used, or simply out of the wrong time period. For instance, the Scold’s Bridle WAS a torture implement used on those who were gossipers-but that wasn’t seen until the 17th century Puritan era. Things like the Iron Maiden and Pear of Anguish simply have no historical evidence of ever even existing in official capacity, let alone ever used. And the few that WERE used, like the rack, were only pretty rare occasions.
Remember reading the book "The Bedside Book of Bastards" that my Brother in law had in the 1970s that was extremely eye opening. It's out of print as far as I know, but nowadays we have the Internet, so there. Seemed to be an awful lot of torture by going up your "back side" with sharp objects in history. Also drawing and quartering. Yikes. Unbelievably horrifying.

Iron maiden was a creation, not from a torturer, but an archaeologist mind. There have been zero cases throughout history, where a victim would be put inside of an iron maiden. It looked scary and exotic because it was a spectacular piece of furniture. Nowadays, people blindly believe it was real, but the iron maiden were a more modern piece of torture device compared to medieval times.
Wrong, people were inside the iron maiden but the spikes got added long after the usage of the device was abolished. It was used as a punishment of shame, not pain
@@TheMegaOnyx Well, yeah thats pretty much what happend The pain part never really applied tho, thats an illusion our modern minds created with whoever found the iron maiden and decided to add spikes The only punishment ever performed was putting someone in there for all to see and think bad things about
Why would humans do this? You've said it, religion and absolute monarchs. Both are responsible for a lot of the bad things in history, especially when they come together. Diderot was right, when he said: "Man will never be free until the last king is strangled with the entrails of the last priest".

For the pear of anguish, I looked it up. At best, it seems to be more of an early modern invention, as in it became a thing AFTER the medieval period and it's use has been disputed by experts for a while now, just like the iron maden. Though I will say though, using it in the genital region or in the butt? Yeah, we'd now consider that sexual assault and I'm betting some people even back in the 1600s thought similar. This section of the wikipedia article did make me a bit intrigued as it MAY have been invented for a completely unrelated purpose for all we know: "There is no contemporary evidence of such a torture device existing in the medieval era, and ultimately the utility of any genuine pears remains unknown. It is possible that it could have been used to extract juices from fruit."
Sure, but if that thing existed at all for any reason, you know it was used for torture time and time again. Humans would make sure of that. And if even one person has to go out that way, fuck it might as well be a 1000 people, I still feel just as awful either way

And the few that WERE used, like the rack, were only pretty rare occasions.
real we should start using them
@@AntLover14 A bit of a stretch there but I honestly think we should bring asylums back.
@@Maeshalanadae bit of a stretch, lol
I love your videos and i learn from you keep up the good work ❤
Love your videos man I watch them every night before bed it just makes content with the night
I love how you can make learning interesting fun
These medieval torture devices make the torture devices in the SAW movies look like a walk in the park 😮
not all tortures are spectacular enough to be shown in films
Remember reading the book "The Bedside Book of Bastards" that my Brother in law had in the 1970s that was extremely eye opening. It's out of print as far as I know, but nowadays we have the Internet, so there. Seemed to be an awful lot of torture by going up your "back side" with sharp objects in history. Also drawing and quartering. Yikes. Unbelievably horrifying.
Love these videos. Will consider reacting to "The Big Bang Theory"? If so, I recommend the scene where Howard gets his junk stuck in a robot hand and another where he has peanut allergies.
I could check it out! Thanks for the recommendation.
this is the kindest video, and in general, where can I buy such toys!!???
Why can't I ever have a Dr like this guy?

I love watching these vids. Keep up the incredible content! ❤
Thank you so much!
@@DoctorER Your welcome 😁
I love your videos. Please do a part two 💚 believe it or not the cradle was never washed. It was made to punish sex criminals and people who were homosexual
Woo homophobia! God, why do gay people always get the short end of the stick throughout history
This feels like something that would be in the Saw movies
I’m glad these punishments are not around today.

Immediately when I hear the phrase 'iron maiden' (torture device), I immediately gets music of Iron Maiden (band) in my head.
Lol I thought the same!
Yes, I've heard about Iron Maiden, I would never have thought that such nasty things would be said about a metal band
I cant choose between him and dr.mike😭
This video is very informative in both historical and scientific manners. I believe that by showing people the horrors of the past, we can build a better future.
Do a series of The Three Stooges from every segment plus 2012 movie
Iron maiden was a creation, not from a torturer, but an archaeologist mind.
There have been zero cases throughout history, where a victim would be put inside of an iron maiden.
It looked scary and exotic because it was a spectacular piece of furniture.
Nowadays, people blindly believe it was real, but the iron maiden were a more modern piece of torture device compared to medieval times.
Wrong, people were inside the iron maiden but the spikes got added long after the usage of the device was abolished. It was used as a punishment of shame, not pain
@akisamekoetsuji7298 Wait, are you telling me that Iron Maiden got changed from shame to pain? Intriguing...
@@TheMegaOnyx Well, yeah thats pretty much what happend
The pain part never really applied tho, thats an illusion our modern minds created with whoever found the iron maiden and decided to add spikes
The only punishment ever performed was putting someone in there for all to see and think bad things about
This is the only doctor i trust and watch
Why would humans do this? You've said it, religion and absolute monarchs. Both are responsible for a lot of the bad things in history, especially when they come together. Diderot was right, when he said: "Man will never be free until the last king is strangled with the entrails of the last priest".
in secular and republican/dictator states people are tormented too. Under any political regime the police and security office abuse its power.
I personally thought that in the Iron Maiden that the spikes were designed to not pierce the victim at all at first but if the victim would move or squirm then the spikes would impale them. I learned something new
You could even combine the rack with the wheel afterwards...

The expanding device is literally the old school version of the reverse beartrap
Total Drama reaction because every episode has injuries from each season to make into a future series
What?

For the pear of anguish, I looked it up. At best, it seems to be more of an early modern invention, as in it became a thing AFTER the medieval period and it's use has been disputed by experts for a while now, just like the iron maden. Though I will say though, using it in the genital region or in the butt? Yeah, we'd now consider that sexual assault and I'm betting some people even back in the 1600s thought similar. This section of the wikipedia article did make me a bit intrigued as it MAY have been invented for a completely unrelated purpose for all we know:
"There is no contemporary evidence of such a torture device existing in the medieval era, and ultimately the utility of any genuine pears remains unknown. It is possible that it could have been used to extract juices from fruit."
Sure, but if that thing existed at all for any reason, you know it was used for torture time and time again. Humans would make sure of that. And if even one person has to go out that way, fuck it might as well be a 1000 people, I still feel just as awful either way
This is why Im happy wasn’t born back then
Yes everyone does not wanna be boring around the 14th century
I think the Pear of anguish was the worst
Hey Doc definitely got to do the blood eagle!
