Jam in the Van took over Bethel Rd. Distillery during Whale Rock Music and Arts Festival to capture intimate musical performances in a one of kind location.
AJ Lee and Blue Summit made their first appearance in Santa Cruz in 2015. Led by singer, songwriter, and mandolinist, AJ Lee, the bluegrass band has performed all over the world, but finds home in California’s Bay Area. In 2019, they released their debut album, Like I Used To. Their second full length project, I’ll Come Back, came out August 2021 - with national touring in support of the record ongoing. Unlike their first record, which featured experimentation with session musicians and electric instruments, the new project is a pure reflection of the live sound of the group, hearkening back to their acoustic roots. Each band member performs at their peak, and the variety of songs on the record caters to their broad fanbase. Certain tracks (“Put Your Head Down,” and “Faithful,”) fall more in the classic bluegrass realm of songwriting, while others (“Lemons and Tangerines,” and “I’ll Come Back,”) fall into that hard-to-define realm of acoustic Americana that blends mesmerizing lyricism and acoustic mastery.

Thier original music is such a breath of fresh air.
Their instrument talent is so high. AJs singing is obviously incredible.
And they're making such good originals.

With AJ Lee, Molly Tuttle (and her brother, Sullivan who plays in Blue Summit), and Billy Strings, the future of bluegrass is secure for at least one more generation.

The Pirate Song has an epic rock sound and feel to it that reminds me of the genius creations of CSNY, New Riders of the Purple Sage, and even Jethro Tull. They are as good in their time as those bands of old were in there's.

I believe some boys been paying attention to Billy Strings!
Sullivan was a very fast picker at about age 9 and played for years in their Tuttles family band. Billy was nowhere to be seen back then. Ssme with Scott Gates, both playing since kids and developed their style and licks long ago without any Billy Strings influence whatsoever. He was invisible back then.
Needs more songs, more minutes, and more notes, but excellent none-the-less!
