Nokia 800 Tough Review - 1 month ownership and full time use

- Having used the 3310 (2017 model) since August 2017, I decided to upgrade to Nokia's latest device.
The 800 Tough is priced between €120-€140 and used the updated KaiOS operating system.
Battery life approx 1 week of normal use.
I use this as my everyday device.

This is by far the most underrated Channel on TH-cam.
For anyone reading this. The 800 tough recieved a firmware and software update earlier in the year that seems to have ironed out alot of the issues. Predictive text now works correctly thank goodness. Mine also hasn't bricked itself for some considerable time. I use mine when I fancy a smartphone detox.
what about whatsapp. personally thats a huge downside. very limited software
For the detox do you just swap in the SIM card from your smartphone and job done?

I've been looking to get a smart rugged phone / smart flip phone si i can use as detox when i need (and they're really cool) . Its just been hard to chose when there's a lot of picky feedback in your face (of course the phones won't be perfect). Im in uk and have looked at nokia 2720 flip with 4g. Nokia 800 tough. Cat S22 flip and Cat 8
B26. So both companies with the flip and brick smart dumb phones. Do you have any recommendations or tips or expectations?

UPDATE: I have returned this phone to the seller. The second device also had issues with powering off randomly.
Overall, while this phone has a tough exterior, the software, operating system and user experience is terrible. It is not a phone I would recommend.

I have the new Nokia 3310 as a secount phone and has had it since januari 2020 it was even my main phone for about a whole Month when the screen on my Iphone was broken. My experience with the Nokia 3310 has been great you can even use a webrowser. I had plans to use it as a emulator to play Gameboy games on and Java games but for some reason it doesnt work i once saw a video when a Guy did it with his new Nokia 3310. It might be because my nokia is one of the first models of the new 3310s since 2017 because the Snake game is different on newer models. I never got to own a phone with real buttons because i got my first phone which was a iPhone 5s in 2016ish which was very late for my age if i had gotten a phone 6 years earlier it would of been a Sony Ericsson 😃

@@raymondterrific2023 It was Harvey Norman, they primarily sell home furnishings and electronics. Perhaps they sell a small coffee table that you could remove the legs from. This could serve as a very robust, yet unwieldly, paddle for your canoe.

Thanks bro. Good video. Just the info I needed. The fact that you can't remove certain apps and especially those useless games, makes this phone very difficult for me to buy. Yeah, I know it sounds ridiculous, but I hate when companies feel they have the right to decide, what's best for me.

I never tried this. I don't know if it would be possible. My thoughts would be that it is not.

I bought this a week ago and it works like a charm! So far no problems. Battery is still at 65%, never turned itselves off, good call quality. Maybe it's because of KaiOS 2.5.2 it runs smooth. Right now you can buy it for €82 in Sweden which is a good price.
At first I tried a Cat B35 and it was awful, it restarted over and over. Felt like a cheap toy compared to this brick so I sent it back.

I have so far looked at the Nokia 2720 4G flip phone and that's it as no others support 4G sim cards... what other dumb phones would you recommend?
I am not sure Hevva, I have since gone back to a smartphone. They don't make them quality anymore, and the cost of not using a smartphone in the modern world is fairly high.
I would consider using Nokia 8000 4G
When you're shining the torch in the daylight can you access the media files whilst simultaneously strobing the beam and dropping the phone from a great height ?
You can yes but first you have to drink 4 quarts of gypsy tears and sing the hokey pokey.

Sure thing, I am living in Ireland. The first phone bricked itself, it was still on, could receive calls, but I could not answer them. All inputs did not work. It also was slow to respond in general and had issues with switching off for no reason.
The second phone, which I no longer have, also had the slowness and switching off for no reason issue. It would power off randomly in my pocket, or when I tried to make it do anything that may stress the RAM, such as reading a text message while on a call.
My opinion beyond the bugs, is that Nokia spent no time user testing this phone. The UX has had no care put into it.
Hi Aaron, thnaks for the review. Very instructive indeed. I have one question though; Does this phone allow you download all your contacts from your Gmail and does it update automatically as well? Most of the previous Nokia's had a limitation on the number of contacts it could hold, so i am hoping that if i get this as a secondary phone, I can automatically download all by contacts from my Gmail. Unfortunately i don't know if it has this capability. Any thoughts please?
How is the call quality? I've had rugged phones and where they suffer a lot tends to be the call quality and not having to say "could you repeat that" a few times in a conversation is what usually returns me to using my smartphone.
Call quality was perfect with this phone.

I recently bought one of these direct from HMD, mainly based on its 'tough' format and the Nokia name (after 3100, 6300, 301). In the 'feature phone' market space it is a very good 4G phone that can do lots of things normally associated with smartphones and which have ridiculously been dropped from most feature phones during the last decade of smartphone domination. I too had initial problems because for the first couple of weeks the battery life was quite dreadful. Wifi and BT and so on were off and the correct charger used and all that good stuff but it sank to 49% after 12 hours of standby and 13% after some calls. Clearly, that makes it worthless. I went on the HMD online chat and they were helpful and suggested a factory reset as an initial step. I was going to save data and setting first but before I had time to do that the phone battery suddenly started performing better. For no apparent reason, it had now improved so that after three days without charge its down to 84%. A strange recovery. I am not entirely confident in it yet but I shall continue to use it since it is not my only phone.

Hi Paulius, I am not sure about these questions, sorry for that. I do remember twice I tried to answer a call and the phone had crashed (no buttons worked, the screen would not respond).
I am considering having this fone. Can you check it the Signal App available on this phone?
How does contacts transfer from another phone via bluetooth work..I transferred 1000 contacts from my old nokia 230 but can't find it on the 800 tough.. please some words of help regarding that..
and is there call recording..??..I can't find it either..and I sorely miss the profiles.. no switching between silent and general profiles..and the - just "beep" - ring tone..not enough built in ring tones.. haven't checked for t9 dictionary for typing msgs though.. just unboxed a while ago , bought it cos it's mentioned as tough and thought it'd suit motorcycle riding , fixed on the handle bar..as it is shake / drop and water proof..

Funny, because I'm kinda torn between the 800 and the 3310. The cat b35 and Nokia 105 are on the list as well. I currently trying the l8star bm.... 70 I believe. The battery of course is a bit week, but overall I like this tiny dump phone

@@FalertTheDim yeah got it in use for a few days now. The size is kinda weird, the missing internet leads to boredom in my lunchbreak but I still going to keep using it as my main phone.
What a pity, Nokia actually had to make a phone called 'Tough'. Considering how old Nokia phones lasted forever, and work to this day, it's a downgrade. 😁 Great review though.

What i understood is that many feature phones dont have the network frequencies to be able to connect in the America's Europe and Asia
I used it in Ireland and the UK, it worked fine, but have not tested it outside of the EU.
As mentioned in my other comments, the 800 Tough barely works in the best of times however.
I did take my 2017 Nokia 3310 to the USA from Ireland, it worked great!

It does not I am afraid. The makers put no effort at all into the software.

@@infernoplexx9562 I have not tried the 2720, though there is another commenter here saying it has the same software. Basically, you know the way an android and apply OS mostly simply works? Things are where you need them to be, the features do what you need them to do. KaiOS doesn't have that. It is a list of features put in by engineers but not sufficiently tested by users.

Hey, I don't remember using WhatsApp calls. Though in general, the call quality was very good and volume was loud. The speaker for the music player is good too.

Hey Stuart, it cannot get Spotify or any other apps from the appstore, just what it comes with. It cost about €130 from Harvey Norman.
That quick settings on/off is an Apple carbon copy but might've just sold me on trading my battered iPoo 8 for one of these bricks

Yes. At almost any price the phone is too expensive, as it does not really work.

Well if you have decided not to get a smartphone, I would go for the most modern Nokia devices. I do not recommend the 800 tough.

There is no app store, so you couldn't get wayz. Maps doesn't work well :(

I bought this as a work phone but I’m having trouble getting the mobile data to work. It works fine on WiFi, but the APN settings don’t seem to work whatever I do. It’s an unlocked phone with an EE sim. I use WhatsApp to chat with customers so I need it to work when I’m out of the house.

As sad as it is, I recommend you do as I did; go back to the dealer, get a refund, and buy a different phone. These phones are terrible.
Have had to send mine back to hmd as it randomly shut down and refused to turn back on. Was sent back to me saying there was nothing wrong with it. Now sits in a drawer.
Yeah that is what happened to mine. I took it back to the shop and got a refund. HMD had no customer service I could get in contact with at all. Sorry to hear about your very poor experience.
@@FalertTheDim Just to update you. After leaving mine in a drawer for christ knows how long I took it out and charged it and it came back on. Its been fine ever since :-)

@@FalertTheDim its quite an annoying phone. its not even powerful enough to open the gps app and its also too slow to open google. messaging is really slow because you have to press each button alot of times. the google assistant is frustrating because when you talk into it its not accurate at all. and there is only a few apps to download.

I'm try to share internet from s8 plus to this phone but there's no option to enter proxy and port 😟 like on android when you click on the wifi connection it should have option show advance options i don't see it
Seems your issue is that it's not really an android phone. It is a KaiOS phone, they have some Android features, but are unable to do many of the more advanced functions you would expect from a smartphone.

Don't worry at all about this feature. The power adapter it's designed to work in both situations. The same adapter will be suitable for 110V and 220V

Whats about Battery Life??
Battery life is good. About 5 days of full time use, including Wifi. But I never use it for browsing the net or anything, just for calls and whatsapp.
once facebook has been deleted can it be reinstalled? I don't want to be able to reinstall....so I dont get distracted

Battery life was good, but remember, it switches itself off randomly - so you cannot necessarily rely on it.

Sadly the alarm clock won't work because the time freezes when the display is off . recent Nokia phones are cheap Chinese junk . even the Nokia one was horrible mess!

Hi, I recall you can do voice notes in whatsapp, but not sure about calls.
VPN would definitely not work, it is not really a smart phone.
No voice or video calls. Only audio messages.

1 of few Feature phones available? [For when 2g/3g goes; otherwise I'd still be very happy with a Nokia 2610!] I want a Feature phone, but weird that after paying to own it you're not allowed to delete unwanted apps & promos! Which I suspect run the battery down, it's not a teenth the longevity of my Nokia 207. Why do people expect a 'phone camera to be as good as a real 1; get a camera if you 'need' top quality - tbh I usually leave the 'phone at home yet always take my camera out; maybe I'm just not made for this alien planet 😂

Sadly no, it is unable to read the QR code which is required to set up Whatsapp Web.

Too bad, Nokia phones are over priced for what they offer and aren't even reliable like they used to be. Some people have managed to brick their phones right out of the box. Even my Nokia 6300 from 2007 lasted me like 6 years and might still be working if I can find it. We need some robust long lasting dumb phone brand in case of emergencies and stuff, and I hope Nokia will make a comeback.
