Indonesian 2019 presidential election had been really tense. But I'm pretty sure that the 2024 election could be one of the most interesting topic of how democracy is tested to the core.
I would be delighted if the LSE could bring more of Indonesia's topic. A global point of view is good for all of us, as Indonesia has been more and more becoming a key player in the world.

we need more in-depth explanations about the presidential election in our country. As an Indonesian citizen, I am happy that foreign countries are paying attention to the political dynamics in our country.
Personally, me and the majority chose Mr. Prabowo purely because of the sustainability program of the previous president, Mr. Jokowi, because in our opinion, what is already good should be continued, does not need to be changed, and what can be improved must be improved, and one of the factors is that the vice presidential candidate is a child. The eldest of Mr. Jokowi, who has a good track record as mayor of the city of Solo, and also has a character who doesn't talk much but gets straight to the point and executes straight away.
Nice insight,. More meaning full for the Indonesian people if john sidel explain more detail why after being in the cabinet prabowo less dangerous and more compromises with the coalition.

Prabowo win is a win for secularism and pluralism. The other candidate (Anies) is supported by hardline muslim groups and has publicly said unlike jokowi he will “respect freedom of speech” of groups wanting to change the country into islamic sharia state. Indonesian minorities voted overwhelmingly for Prabowo.

The thing is from 3 candidate the only right choice from us (most millenials) Is choosing prabowo.
Because Anis as president looks fine but the vice president is too tight with his religion , saying "if you dint choose us your religion need to be questioned".
The other hand ganjar and mahfud is no brainer selection. Until the political parties is PDI led by megawati, and the past 7 years felt like this country is lead by her not jokowi, even every ministry from comunication,internet ect mostly picked from PDI which is kinda why. Theres a throw back about a lot of thing, one of em is the PSE regulation that became big back then blocked most of the internet service.
And couple of month later the minister that regulate this kind of BS got caught doing corruption about 3 million $.
Also how over confidence megawati is, sayin jokowi is nothing without them, infront of many people on the politics meeting, basically just point and laught at jokowi. And jokowi just sit there and followed along. (You can find the video anywhere)
So yea, thats one of the reason why prabowo is winning, even though its kinda unetchical oickin prsident son as a vice president.
Regarding Ganjar, Megawati, and PDI Perjuangan
1. There has NEVER a single PDI Perjuangan member been appointed as the Minister of Communication and Information, not even Rudiantara who was independent while being better than Plate (who was from NasDem)
2. Even if Megawati take control from the shadow, there has never been a single project for the party. From thousands km of toll roads, dozens of dams and reservoir, airports and harbors, G20 and ASEAN Summit, Asian Games, none are controlled by PDI Perjuangan. They're still better than GolKar during Soeharto era (now supporting Jokowi/Prabowo)

you forgot to mention that the oldest son of the current president is also competing for the vice president position in the election. He won altogether with Subianto. What does that mean?

i really need to know how less dangerous prabowo right now is. human rights abuse is severe already, but afaik he's no longer in good relationship with cendana ever since his divorce?
and i think cendanas don't favor jokowi that much? jokowi has been trying to take their assets, TMII for example. i need more insights regarding this.
Cendana may already "forgave" him, with his ex-wife recently joined the election and/or his party.
On the other hand, Cendana must've know that Prabowo's only _using_ Jokowi, so they would slowly remove Jokowi after retirement.

No a lot has changed, Freeport, American Company that has plunders Papua gold since 1968 have lost it majority of shares to Indonesian government. Indonesian government no longer sell precious raw materials to foreign nations. Indonesia has built a lot of infrastuctures (Road, Freeway, Train Track, Airport, Seaport, etc), Social securities programs have been upgraded. Indonesia has the first bullet train in Southeast Asia, Indonesia recovered very quick from the covid pandemic, etc. No Mister! Things have gotten better these last 10 years!

Not "can't change the past", the correct one should be "shouldn't forget the past".
