  • Indonesia is embarking on an ambitious USD 32b plan to relocate its capital from Jakarta to Nusantara, a purpose-built city on Kalimantan. With exactly one year until its inauguration date, there are concerns that the city’s construction is behind schedule. Will Nusantara be ready for the big move?
Will the new capital be physically to accommodate the influx of people? Are the local, indigenous tribes prepared to integrate with Indonesians of other ethnicities? Is Nusantara able to achieve its grand green targets? And most importantly, will it succeed in alleviating the population pressures on Jakarta?

THIS IS WHY CNA IS BEING BIASED HERE, their assumption that Nusantara only represent certain ethnic group is very narrow minded. You can see Malaysians once protest the naming of Nusantara as the new capital of Indonesia because they thought it would imply that territories of Malaysia to be under Nusantara's authority. And Malaysian Malay considered "Nusantara" to be part of their legacy because it symbolises the glory of "Alam Melayu" which they taught at education academics as "Mahawangsa Melayu". So actually Malays are proud and considered the word Nusantara as part of their legacy and civilization. We do know that Kalimantan has Huge population of Malay ethnic throughout the island.. hence Banjar Malays, Bruneian, Sabah, Sarawak, etc.
Second, CNA also aired the conversation with the environmental activist about the effect of EV battery and so it implies that Nusantara is wholly blamed in this part... This is truly hypocritical and biased on CNA!! If the objection was because it exploit nature from nickel mining, then CNA should also blame and shame Singapore, America, Elon Musk, and other developed countries who also welcoming EV to be part of their green transformation!!! Despite that Nusantara already projected that 70%+ of the people mobility to be based on Public Transport, Walking, and Bicycle lane... CNA forgot to mention this Ratio!!
Now you see how CNA is truly biased here.

There is also another side here, nusantara is actually native kutainese name. Sure its roots is javanese word but as local historian mentioned. The land was historically called nusantara before it was renamed in 1300s by aji batara agung dewa sakti, the first kutai king, though its meaning is 'tanah yg terpotong'. Because because the land was in the middle, divided between jahitan layar settlement and kutai lama settlement. At least this is what written in 'geneology of Kutai'.

I really like the idea of new capital in kalimanatan, this will open new opportunity for us who live in kalimantan to get new development project and new way of life for us Indonesian kalimanatans. The people who disagree about the move and feels like its not the right move could cry for all I care, if we talking about the environment and land acquisition from local people/local tribe land is a legitamate concern, but Outside of that concern I only see people from jakarta whinning that their city will no longer be a capital city, who care if Nusantara has a mall or any of that stuff as long school, water, and hospital is available everything will be allright, if not balikpapan is just 2 hour drive from nusantara, a toll road is gonna be build and the drive hour ia gonna be cut down to serval minute. To jakarta residan who doesn't want to leave then that also okay, more job for us in here in kalimantan. Indonesian as a whole already had enough of more then 7 decade of java development, now its outaide java that need to be build. Jave could've all indonesian wealth but they can't keep getting the development forever if not we from kalimanatan are not Indonesian.

Penglihatan masa depan seorang pemimpin dan warga biasa tentu bnyk bedanya, pemimpin melihat 10 bahkan 50 atau 100 tahun yg akan datang, sedang warga biasa umumnya hanya melihat satu sampai 5 tahun kedepannya. Menurut gw sdh saatnya ibukota pindah diluar Jawa, yg akan berimbas dgn pemerataan pembangunan diluar pulau Jawa. Konflik tetep ada, tapi dgn komunikasi yg baik, demi masa depan anak cucu kita jg, gw yakin, semua masalah akan teratasi. Ibukota yg bersatu dgn alam adalah ibukota yg sangat cocok temanya utk Indonesia kedepannya. Kota modern, tapi menyatu dgn alam... Jayalah Nusantara, jayalah Indonesia ku 🙏🇲🇨

My personal views is to take a look back of the idea put forward by ur previous presidents : that the new capital should be somewhere in jawa not too far from Jakarta which will not bring hardships to many govt employees moving & the price tag is not too big . The past president too did research on the issue but what to cap the price tag to manageable control. Now the money in thrown in like a dice & the whole country is holding the breath ? Anyhow good luck in this endeavour !

Are you proud that Indonesia is the coloniser of Borneo? Many endangered animals and undiscovered species were murdered by your government. Only 4% of wildlife is left on our planet. Without wildlife, we all die because we need animals to maintain life on earth.
Your government has had more than 50 years to create their own legacy, but they chose to copy the West by creating an oil and plastic product economy. That's why Java is so filthy.
Your government drills for oil in Sumatra and they make it into to cheap petrol and plastic products for people on Java.
And then you all litter the ocean with it. And now you will colonize the 1 million year old island of Borneo and destroy it the same way you all destroyed Java. Is that something to be proud of?

My concern is that the government should really consider about the human resource development with high standard of education. There should be the best elementary school, junior & high school, and also the best university that integrated with world-class standard. The government also have to consider about the future community there, what is going to be look like and feel like... is it a community like Singapore or Washington or other cities for example. A lot of considerations but I think if we can focus and plan it really well, I think we can make it...
The human resource development in education can be a solution not to only to a green capital city but also the green sustainable Indonesia. We have to think how to solve the problems for long term and massive effect not only just whining and complaining without any solutions... this is my proposal to Indonesia government and any stakeholders

Whether the capital city is moving Jakarta will not become a waste of land just because some group of people move to the new capital. It needs more money to "fix" Jakarta and it's more expensive rather than opening new land. and people outside Jakarta will always say it loud "It's not fair" and "Indonesia is so much bigger than Jakarta" bla bla bla. It wasn't easy at all. but we need a big move. I'm Jakartan and I agree with this big move.

As an Indonesian, i am against this rushed capital moving for these reasons :
    1. The scientific paper / assessment that was made as one of the legal prerequisite of moving the capital lack of comprehensive analysis.
    2. The environmental impact assessment of moving the capital (we use to call it AMDAL in Indonesia) is not made available to public. An NGO once try to ask the said assessment on certain project within the new capital, but denied by the govt. under the pretext of state's secret
    3. The plan of moving the capital was made top-down, from the president himself in 2018/19 without further consultation or public hearing. Since the parliament is ruled by a large coalition parties (85-90%) supporting the president, no significant critics was made on the plan to move the capital
    4. The Law of the new Capital was made only in 42 days, fastest ever in Indonesia. The draft was not made public initially, and was not discussed properly. The Faculty of Law of Universitas Mulawarman in Kalimantan once protested this hasty public hearing, since the draft of Law governing the new capital was only made available for review only hours before a public discussion. The discussion itself was only "arranged" to fulfill the formalities, rather than a real public scrutiny

Well, people nowadays really take names (and naming) for granted. Name is not only about popularity of the name and its context. There is more behind the name, behind the letters. Who, do you think, create the word "Nusantara"? If "Nusantara" feels unifying, whose prespective are we using?

@@fcapcomjaka8546 your assumption that Nusantara only represent certain ethnic group is very narrow minded.
CNA forgot to mention this Ratio!!

    why Indonesia need new capital?
it's already planned since the Independecen of Indonesia, Jakarta previously batavia was initially seaport build by dutch on marsh land, it never intended to last long for massive population
    is there any controversies?
of course every mega project always have controversies, but they try to solve it together and always open to communication with many all of stakeholder.
for those that think Indonesia government enslave the indigenous people there and relocate their ancestry land:
we don't know for sure the real conflict but many times the conflict of relocation happened because they never register their own land to get ownership certificate and also not paying the land taxes, In Indonesia every inch of land is belong to Indonesia government for Indonesian so there's no pure ownership of the land, also Sampit Incident that mentioned at 15:49 happen in central kalimantan in 2001, meanwhile the location of IKN is in east kalimantan, two different place and not happened recently.
the location of IKN itself is on production forest, back in 70-80s the 2nd president of Indonesia held transmigration program to populate island outside java, so basically most of people that have land there are people that join that program and not indigenous to that land either. so they can claim it's their ancestry land but they will never have evidence to backup their claims, but I don't believe Indonesia under Joko widodo will let the relocation happen without compensation even though they have no proof of ownership, instead many people from various land in Indonesia waiting to get relocation compensation because they usually give 3 times the price of their land if they have the certificate of ownership and plentiful compensation money for people that even don't have the certificate of ownership.
FYI: most of Indonesian, if you ask them, I am sure 100% they never acknowledge green party of Indonesia existence, because I even just heard it from this video, so it's funny to include their opinion as the representation of Indonesia socio-politic situation in Indonesia new capital.

The new capital could be much cleaner, with way less pollution and no crazy traffic jams. Of course, we can't make everyone happy. If I'm wrong, what evidence is there that anything will be different? Also, what about climate change? The earth will be hotter and have stronger typhoons becuase your government killed millions of ancient trees which were taking carbon out of the air.

Majapahit dengan Gajah Mada cuma melakukan iterasi kedua dari dwipantara kertanegara jadi Nusantara. Makanya Negarakretagama juga tulis Kute kan karena ada kontak. ^Maybe Indonesia can adopt some of the practices other nations had done when there was a mass migration of new settlers.
e.g 14:15 Taiwan provided multiple support in education for indigenous citizens - in both fund and fixed spots for top-tier education (that are usually reserved for the top % from university exams) In short; so while this won't bring any immediate benefits, their next generation will be able to successfully benefit from the nation's development which in term will also improve living standard as a whole.
What I am more concerned about is... a large portion of the development fund > AKA the PIE will be eaten up by the construction developer (and those who engaged with them which includes real estate and house/land flippers).
It's best to have a price regulation earlier on > e.g House/land cannot be sold for more than 2-5% above the price it was brought if the initial transaction was within a year.
House can not be flipped by more than 5-8 or 10 percent if the land/house hasn't been owned for more than 3 years and so on.
    > Aka don't present a similar mistake (despite its good for government revenue) that many major cities of other developed/developing nations made where it became inaccessible for most of the actual settlers. Prohibit transactions for those who may take advantage of old settlers for their land too (many might not be aware of their land value in 5-10 years and sold them off cheaply since they may be economically distressed due to 2020-2023 global events.
There has been more than x example where contracts are made and massive profits is given to developers... and they vanish x years later when problems manifest (or had already rebranded). Gov needs to make sure the developer already have sufficient funding to finish the projects on its own before collecting fund from new home buyer (there is also the example of a Korean who owns over 100 home despite his actual fund being... and when interest rate raise = bankrupt)

It's great national project of Indonesia. Surely Indonesia can make it. Look at how Batam and Pulau Bintan were developed. From a malaria endemic swampland with isolated fishing villages of a few thousand islanders, Batam has become a bustling city of more than 1 million people. Bintan meanwhile has developed into an international tourist resort taking advantages of its sandy beaches. However, development occurs only when foreign companies invest large amount of capital and resources, notably from nearby rich Singapore and Malaysia. Indonesia must be more welcoming to foreign investment. Make it happen and Indonesia will be a country to be admired.
