  • By the time you listen to this, Indonesia likely has a new president after the country held its much-anticipated election on Wednesday.
And who takes over Indonesia - the world’s third-largest democracy - after 10 years of relative democratic harmony under the hugely popular president Joko Widodo, gives Australians cause to pause.
Today, International and political editor, Peter Hartcher, on whether the new leader might return Indonesia to the bad old days, when it was run by a fierce dictator. And what this could mean for Australia if they did.

As the 2 biggest nickel exporters in the world, I sincerely hope that both Indonesia and Australia could work together to top the global electric vehicle industry. May Prabowo's win strengthened the two countries' relations

Prabowo would not have forgotten how the dastardly Aussies shafted Indonesia during the East Timorese war of independence.
Payback time is at hand. Australia should beware.

I chose Jokowi in 2019 against Prabowo but in the election2024 just yesterday I chose Prabowo why? We as Indonesian know that while he served as Minister of Defense he was very sincere with respect to Jokowi and tried hard in his responsibility although he was Jokowi's ex political fierce rival both of them showed a statesmanlike spirit when the two of them joined together this made the majority of people praise them. This unity is very important when facing the Covid pandemic so that the government can act quickly and quickly recover its economy one important thing, Prabowo is committed to continuing Jokowi's programs

People of Indonesia do not forget what Mr.Prabowo had done in year 1997. Most of us are worry, but we hope he could pay his mistakes by dedicating the rest of his life for Indonesian peace, harmony and prosperity.
He is just like an open book now, we know most of himself inside out, so I think it's not too hard to anticipate if there any bad intention of him. I hope so..😊

In general very good, not superficial and biased comentary like in other news.
But there is one important error at 1:42.
Megawati, the "owner" of the politicial party of Joko Widodo, is NOT the daughter of former dictator "Suharto" (Indonesia's 2nd president).
He is the daughter of "Sukarno" (Indonesia's first president), which was actually toppled by Suharto with the help of USA.

Don't worry, my fellow Australians. Prabowo Subianto has proved himself to be compliant with democracy on a large scale. After his discharge from the military, he formed a political party and contested in the general election. His party won substantial votes in parliament.
Yes, his past history might not be so bright because he married Suharto's daughter, the former dictator. He was in the inner circle of Suharto regime.
But we have witnessed that he transformed from a fierce general and commander of special forces to become a respected figure who adheres to modern democracy.

I am an Indonesian. I learn a lot from this interview. It's interesting how an outsider judge or view my country. It's a unique experience. Like looking at myself in the mirror and a person behind me says, "see you have some dirt on your left cheek." Mr. Probowo has learnt from his past mistakes that to create divisions in people is not gonna work. People are fed up of hating each other. If we can work it out in peace, then no enmity or quarreling is needed. Australia has been our neighbour for as long as I can remember. I grew up in Soeharto's era so I've known quite a bit about our relationship. I sure hope we can be good friends. Cheers!

Great discussion and very up to date geopolitic relationship between the two neighbouring nations, and without any bias!!! Australia and Indonesia will certainly have a good future relationship, but very important for Australia to equally have a good relationship with China, as China and Indonesia are very important trade partners for each other!!!
    Cheers!!! 🍷🍷😃😃👍👍

01:44 Megawati Sukarnoputri is not Suharto's daughter. As her name suggests, she is Indonesia's first president Sukarno's daughter.

Grandpa Prabowo does not have quality to lead a nation. He is influenced by Soeharto's dictatorship ( he was even former Soeharto's son in law) . His hands are covered by blood when he was a military officer in East Timor, West Papua and in Jakarta during massive riot in May 1998 when thousands of chinese women were raped, thousands of building destroyed and people got killed. Even the US government few years ago denied visa for him because US believed , Prabowo is impacted by human rights violation. Indonesians have been fooled by Jokowi's humbleness and in the end of his presidency, he puts his son Gibran as Prabowo's vice president candidate. Now Indonesia is back to Soeharto's era and even worse. Even Soeharto did not nominate his children to become vice president.
