      Disagree. It should have been a limited series a la THE WIRE, SOPRANOS, BOARDWALK EMPIRE, etc. Marty's stubbornness and archaic ways made it an overlong feature that was viewed by 98% of the audience on TV streamed. One of the more apparent ways Scorcese's films have been able to defy dwindling attention spans is Thelma Schoonmaker's editing. She was way ahead of the curve on the growing attention deficit of the audience. It's impossible to fall asleep watching Goodfellas, obviously for the story and performances, but also because the editing has so much energy it's like a dose of caffeine that will keep you glued for as long as Scorcese chooses to.

    • @lordbunbury
      @lordbunbury 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Word Lifer She is great. But mostly at being able to technically realise the instructions of Scorsese. She doesn’t do the editing by herself, all creative vision is mostly Scorsese.

    • @jdovma1
      @jdovma1 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@lordbunbury There's a fine line in editing between a director's vision and an editor's creative skill. As a former editor myself, a lot of the way I got my ideas into a cut was to let the director believe it was their idea. lol Don't underestimate Thelma Schoonmaker's influence on him. I've seen footage of him telling her what to do, and I've seen footage of him deferring to her suggestions. Unless we're in the room to witness who suggested what we have no idea. But we do know she edited these movies, and has been honored above all others in the field a number of times. Editors are not just another pair of hands. There is a craft all its own to it.

    • @lordbunbury
      @lordbunbury 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Word Lifer yeah, well Scorsese has a very strong creative vision which is something Thelma did a dream of assisting him with getting into the finished product, and I am sure she has some influence, but Scorsese decides exactly how the endproduct turns out.

    • @jdovma1
      @jdovma1 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@lordbunbury That's a pretty simplistic idea of how editing works, my friend. It's a lot more complicated than that. Especially with an editor as elite as Schoonmaker. Film is a collaborative art form. Anyone can sit there and take orders. He uses Schoonmaker exclusively because she's as imperative to his success as his vision. Films are made or broken in the editing room. Just look at the case of the original Star Wars for an example. It was Hirch, Chew and Marcia Lucas that made the film even watchable, let alone a hit (John Williams had a little something to do with it as well). Every one of Scorcese's classics would have been a different movie if Schoonmaker had not been his editor. Many of them may not have lived up to the prestige they have achieved. Scorcese is well aware of that. I'm sure he'll be the first one to admit it. Which is why he works with no one but Thelma Schoonmaker.
      In film, a story is told three times; once in the script, once in the camera, and once on a Steinbeck or in Avid. The editor is telling the third story. The director gets to go out and claim it all. But those that do this for a living know the difference. Which is why they honor her for her editing as much as they honor him for his directing. If she was just executing his vision, she'd be an afterthough come awards seasont. She's not. Because we can identify her contribution to each film's success. And we'd know if she was just a pair of hands. She's a first ballot hall of famer. As is Scorcese. And they've rode each other to the top. (that didn't sound as dirty in my head lol)

    • @lordbunbury
      @lordbunbury 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Word Lifer Scorsese shoots with the editing in mind. Raging Bull, Goodfellas, all those fast cuts are in Scorsese’s mind before and during shooting. Watch or read some interviews with Thelma and she says:
      “He thinks like an editor when he conceives the film. And if he is co-writing it, he thinks like an editor then, and when he is shooting, he absolutely thinks like an editor, which is why his films have such good editing in them. You can’t make great editing unless you have good footage. He thinks like an editor constantly when he is shooting. I can’t tell you what a joy it is to get dailies that are thought of by an editing mind. A lot of editors get footage from directors who don’t know how to edit and then they have to try and make it work, and it’s not easy. So it’s just a treat to have a director who thinks like an editor when he is shooting.”
      And on a director taking all the credit:
      “ Well, he doesn’t take all the credit; I get too much actually, because he edits all the films with me.”
      Of course she is more than just a tool and because of her skill she does a great job, but you overestimate her creative input a bit. She does have input but it is always together with Scorsese and you make it out like Scorsese just shoots the thing and let Thelma have the reigns. Just watch other movies she edited like Snow Man and you see there isn’t much extraordinary creativity there. A lot of technical skill for sure.
      Directors like Kubrick, Tarantino, Scorsese, Godard, Truffaut, Melville, Leone, etcetera, the auteurs, so to speak, have such a vision that an editor is not given real all out creativity on the editing.
