@@LordMichaelRahl most of them are in no sense can be considered art.
A movie consists of many different things like direction , story telling , music , cinematography etc ...
And then look at most of the marvel movies , how many of them felt unique in any way ? How many of them looked like they took a risk ? Or ACTUALLY good movie ?
Because as long as I know most of MCU movies I have seen are repetitive with same tone and same way of story telling(except for winter soldier and infinity war but still the difference isn't huge) . I mean seriously , they make 20+ movies , a huge cinematic universe , earns billions and they don't even think to atleast be creative in their movie making ?
They are "films" only in sense they release on big screen . BUT if we consider movies as form of art (which we should ) ,then they are in no way art and hence they are not movies by that definition. They are just "theme park movies" by targeting specific audiences.

So comic book movies are by *DEFINITION* art, just like almost everything else.
They also don't target a specific audience, a huge range of people from all ages like them, otherwise they wouldn't have made so much money.
Lastly, again, MCU movies are mostly completely different to one another. The fact that there is good humour of similar type in every one doesn't mean they are the same.
They have completely different themes. Spider-Man Homecoming is a coming of age story, Ant-Man is a heist film, GotG is a space-opera about family, Winter Soldier is a spy movie about the dangers of global surveillance, Infinity War is about sacrifice where the bad guy wins, Thor is about responsibility, Black Panther is about colonization and being a king, Thor:Ragnarok is about the beautification of the ugly past, Dr. Strange and Iron-Man are about forgiveness and self-growth.

J M go any other whole genres are we going to dismiss out of hand, I mean animation also not cinema I guess, don’t tell japan. This is such nonsense, I Have seen all the art films Scorsese mentioned the mcu has made films that are just as substantive. Guardians 2 for an example is a deeply personal film with a rich subtext about the nature of ego and fathers and sons it also happens to be hilarious and have lots of cgi that doesn’t take away from a great script. This is like confusing seriousness and obvious on the face pretensions for actual depth. Also I’d love to hear him have to trash things like Star Wars and Jaws what about Charlie Chaplin, I mean marvel’s crowd pleaser, inoffensive nature is actually far more representative of what cinema is overall, this is a big broad medium that generally seeks wide appeal. So please shit on the big movies of every era King Kong is just like a marvel picture

JaguarRider supporting and promoting different types of filmmaking doesn’t mean cancelling superhero movies! Virtually every major movie event over the last decade+ has been a big budget franchise movie filled with load music and explosions. He’s not just talking about Marvel, Marvel are just the biggest example (and I would argue the best of them all by quite a long way). We’ve had the Star Wars trilogy plus rogue one/solo etc.. the (sadly) ongoing Transformers movies, Superman and Batman and Suicide squad, several iterations of Spider-Man plus ongoing Spider-Man related projects, Xmen and fant4stic (yuck) and even the frigging Ninja Turtles got a reboot! I’m sure I could think of more if I could be bothered. It all adds up to a large amount of quite similar material doesn’t it? Not saying they’re all exactly the same, but they definitely are telling the same type of story. Referring to Martin Scorsese as a ‘film snob’ for having a different opinion to you is highly ignorant really, considering how much he has contributed to film in his life. He didn’t even say superhero movies were bad! Just, like maybe we can make the effort to appreciate everything else also? And try not to let Disney’s hostile takeover of everything cinema reduce the art form to superhero movies and “live action” remakes of classic children’s movies

Probably an aspect that everyone already notices, but my favorite thing about the Quaalude scene in The Wolf of Wall Street is its subjective editing. I absolutely love how he falls down an immense and painful number of steps at first, only for it to be revealed after, that it was six steps. It perfectly captures the distortion of the mind on drugs with a single cut. Something about that just blew my mind when I saw it in the theater.

  • @Allagi22
    @Allagi22 4 ปีที่แล้ว +96

Martin Scorsese's concerns are legitimate. If you've noticed, the movies in theaters for the last 10 years or so have been dominated big budget franchises and animated kids features. Things like Super Hero Movies, Disney and Dream works animated films as well as sequels to previous blockbusters, even decades later. Next Year Top Gun 2 and another Bill and Ted's adventure are coming out. Those original films are 30 years old or close to it. THE REASON for this is because people don't go to the movies for the same reason anymore. It used to be that Movies were for big deal actors, and television was considered the "small screen" for lesser actors, or for young actors coming up that would one day graduate to the movies (See George Clooney, Clint Eastwood, Bruce Willis, etc.). Then came the 21st century, and some of the best acting captured on camera began to happen on TV. Shows like The Sopranos, The Wire, 6 feet under, etc started gaining traction, and then streaming services hit which exponentially exploded TV. Now the best stories on film, either in theaters or on TV, weren't on TV or in movie theaters at all. They were on the web, via sites like Netflix, Hulu, Prime, HBO GO, and now Disney + etc. etc.
Craig Ferguson said it best for me, when he was talking to Cillian Murphy about the success of "Peaky Blinders". He said "The people who used to go out to see thoughtful movies at the cinema are now staying home and watching thoughtful television" I couldn't put it better myself.
Scorsese is aware of this is well. It's the reason he was involved with "Boardwalk Empire". It's the reason he made the deal with Netlfix to allow the movie to stream free after a month of limited release in theaters. He's no idiot, he understands the industry very well, and I guarantee you his opinion about Marvel films is shared by every serious director working in film.
The good news is, it truly is the golden age of cinematic entertainment. Yes, it's probably true that great character driven story films will be few and far between at your local cinema. However, there will still be a place for that type, and that level of film in the form of full length feature films exclusive to a streaming service (much like The Irishman, or Roma) , or in the form of a mini series (see Chernobyl, Making a Murderer) or as a TV show with multiple seasons (Game Of Thrones, Mad Men, The Crown, Mindhunter, Breaking Bad, House of Cards, True Detective, Pretty Little Liars, etc)
The old world of cinema is changing rapidly, one could even argue collapsing completely. However, great stories, great cinematography, great writing, great acting and great directing are more prevalent and abundant now than ever.
I completely agree with what Martin Scorsese says, but also believe we are in a transition period. It's my firm belief that the time and art of making a movie, a picture, a singular 1.5-3 hour film is not over, but truly just beginning. The best is almost certainly yet to come.
And when the next great director does come around, the will look at Scorsese as a benchmark for greatness, and for what can truly be captured behind the camera. Scorsese will go down in history as one of, if not the greatest, director of all time.

He never said anything wrong, he never even insulted the MCU. You chose to interpret the term "amusement park films" as a negative way to describe super hero movies when he literally stated that they can be appreciated for what they are. And you chose to put words in his his mouth and treat him as the "MCU hating old man".
To this day, people still fight over this topic yet everyone seems to have misunderstood what Scorsese was trying to say.
