- So a few months back, SimpleFlips was holding a Mario 64 rom hack contest to see who could make the best Mario 64 TROLL hack. This was the winning hack so I decided to check it out!

Honestly, I don't like this type of troll where everything is arbitrary. I like troll levels that subvert your expectations but it must be done within the ruleset of Mario games. That's just my opinion anyway.

I totally agree with you. Troll levels in Rom hacks just feel like broken hot garbage with random settings and properties. The only difference at that point is the creators reputation and the fact that the random properties are somewhat consistent.
Dave, I HAVE to watch you play Unfair Mario 64 by Kaze. The trolls in that hack are just godly, and I believe it's up until Bowser 2. It wasn't made for the contest I don't think but I know I have it downloaded if you need it from me.

I mean...it's a nice try, but this is what people in Mario Maker would call *hot garbage* because, beyond that very first green platform being fake and maybe 2 other things, there's no setups or expectations created to subvert later. Totally random things reload the level, they don't even really kill you...or like, surprise invisible walls...it's just random things not being what they appear in random ways. Random surfaces are weird, random enemies have random effects or random new movements or damage type. There's no theme, rhyme, rhythm, expectation, or hints.
NO SHAME in save stating.
I honestly can't even imagine beating this without save states 😂😂 I'm sure it can and has been done and bless those that had the ability to power through it hahah

Yeah I'm voting that the only clever bit in this whole thing was the green back and forth that you can't jump off of. That's about it.
The only parts of the first troll level I liked were the fake light green platforms, the area where you can't jump or you die, and the area where it showed you what color was good and what was bad before the spinning platforms. Those were neat troll ideas. The hidden quicksand areas, the inconsistent platform physics, the fact that enemies are programmed differently and the incomplete launchers are infuriating! It seems more like a "kaizo" hack than a "troll" hack.
I will admit the troll toad was funny, though.

I'm not entirely against some trolls but if literally nothing is what it looks like or kills you than it's just stupid.
I gave Dave a like anyway for his work. The rom hack itself is random and nothing clever. A good troll level can define its own rules, here are no rules.

She's actually adressing a Mod in chat by the name of "TheSilentCarnographer" and says "Silent it's the worst." then something about it happening before (i think) before asking Dave "How long was i on the floor? 2 Hours?" which Dave doesn't respond to which prompts her to say "Dave doesn't care. I'll explain it to you..." and the rest i can't quite make out since Dave starts talking again.
You can find it on his Twitch in the past broadcasts. It's a Video called "Playing a TROLL Level....In Mario 64???" from like 12 Days ago. Conversation happens around 40:40 in the video. 41:35 for the part where she responds to "TheSilentCarnographer".

Wow the nostalgia is always heavy for me on SM64. I love this game so much! Keep up the amazing content DGR!
For anyone wondering what was going on starting at 31:00: Mario 64 defines "out-of-bounds" as anywhere where there isn't ground below you (levels with bottomless pits normally have a death barrier, which counts as "ground" for this purpose, but this area _doesn't_). If you try to move into out-of-bounds, the game acts as if you hit an invisible wall; if you end up out-of-bounds without moving there (e.g. a platform moved out from under you) then you instantly die and Mario is shown without his hat during the death animation.
I think what makes Mario Maker troll levels fun is that they have to follow the game's rules and then try to fool you with what can be done within those rules. With this sort of a hack, the fun is in being random and cruel while shifting the rules which is fair enough but I find Mario Maker trolls much more enjoyable.

this has no logic to follow so it doesn't make sense. I don't like this level.
there is logic present, but because the base sm64 toolset has little to nothing in the hazards department, it takes more creative solutions. the creator forces you to learn what each color means at the beginning of the level, and then forces you to break that rule when they change. the other option is place a sign at the start that lists all the effects, but then you get into "spoiler" territory by removing the sense of discovery. "just place the tutorials throughout the level!" then you get to the point that the player cant forget and is surprised by nothing, and if you force them on the player, what is the point of them playing it in the first place if you remove the trolls as they play? The biggest difference between 2d and 3d troll levels comes down to what you can see. a screen's worth in 2d is only about a minute of gameplay unless solving an order of operations puzzle, whereas in a 3d space, is literally everything not hidden in its own carlbox or tunnel, and even then, 3d cameras hate enclosed spaces, and will still be forced to reveal things the creator does not want to. so that makes the only option to change the players expectations of the things they see.

There were several good ones imo. But most of them I think were designed to be frustrating (the intermittent difficult platforming doesn’t help either). It’s a different troll design philosophy.
I just think it should be consistent in its rules.

Why is it ok to have a randomly disappearing floor leading to death in 2D but not 3D? I've watched up to the first star and the disappearing platforms were all lime green so thats still a rule
31:00 I have a theory what's going on with this puzzle, and oddly enough, it's Mr Half An A Press himself that tipped me off. Everything in a SM64 level that doesn't have a "floor polygon" below it is considered out of bounds, and instadeath. If you try to move into OOB (your next potential movement frame having no floor polygon below it), you bonk off an "invisible wall". If the floor polygon moves out from under _you_ then... you freeze and die in midair. The brick platforms are safe to stand on (slow health loss aside) because they still count as floor polygons, whereas to get between those platforms, you have to use the moving platform.

That second level has the best music imo. Its from a underrated N64 game called Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon. The music comes from the games first stage,Oedo Castle. If you havent played it i def recommend doing so. Its a short game but its worth it

One troll hack I definitely recommend is the 2000 IQ quiz. That one was my favorite, it tests your memory of Mario 64 with a few twists~ XD

SimpleFlips explained what he believed was happening with the moving platform being that it was moving the playable area around itself, meaning if Mario collided with the sides they were the walls of the area but if it moved without Mario he would void out
I like that it was done. Some of the trolls were spot on. More of those kinds of trolls and this would be extra hilarious

Looking back at it, this hack really isn't an amazing playing experience. It was my first attempt at ever trying to make "troll" levels like this, and I think the expectations with it being a "competition winner" make people go in expecting some 200 IQ subversion. The format of Simpleflips' competitions is based on twitch viewers watching someone else play the hacks rather than playing it themselves, so it doesn't always mean the best designed game comes out on top. My goal, more than anything, was to make the hack a fun one-off stream experience, and I think it (mostly) accomplished that goal, but for most players it's going to be a tedious, frustrating game, and I wouldn't reccomend it.
