A pass by Illwinter to make some logical additions to the monsters (barding on some of the quadrupeds, helmet on the semi-humanoids like the Ulm) would be a big help.
Theres a lot of needed balance changes that dont need to be ridiculous to make some of the crummier pretenders more fun to play. Hell, making them cheaper at minimum might make some of them worth taking to free up more scales or magic paths.
Demon Macaw is a very economical chassis for Unbearable Splendor, which also kinda allows it to expand, and doesn't get obsoleted by body ethereal/fire shield.
I don't know if it was intended to be but this is one of the most informative new player videos for me. I'd actually prefer to use one of the more interesting or less overpowered gods from the B or C tier and I scoff at all the usual advice new players hear like "pick ulm" or to use the three headed boar. I just tried the Earth dragon and its a MONSTER... just hard skin bless and it is almost immune to anything. 28 trolls were almost too much, got a pair of afflictions but even out of dominion its very strong.
Seconding this. I've wanted to make use of it before but didn't have the wherewithal to figure out how. One of the most unique chasis in the game, and it feels more like a monster than anything else, even if you can't expand with it.
It's the power of science manifested. I checked it on the mod inspector, i'm still not sure what you do with it but it's got a ton of keywords that would be fun to experiment with.
So far earth dragon seems great at early expansion. Extra NP, cheap reinvigoration bless, flying, and fear mean it can be sent against most indies without items or spells.
I understand that these videos are already long as they are, but it would probably be nice to point out uses for 'bad' pretenders. Surely they are not just noob traps, right?
35:49 I think that I took him somewhere because it was one of the only two options to add growth and the other one was likely an expensive titan, so it's probably far higher ranked for a scales nation, full scales, no bless, don't care about the god as long as cheap, looked into it, it was middle age C'tis, cheaper than the titan and the snake, full scales except neutral luck, dom 6 and an off path death bless, seems to be one of the gods that I've made before I had to find out that you can no longer twice born or lich craft gods and thus can't make use of the reforming flesh mending bones thing that I want to include everywhere since I've learned that lich craft now transforms the caster, idea was a fast growing rich scales C'tis with a gigantic lich in the lategame (imprisoned), while the build doesn't work, it's still the cheapest chasi to give C'tis extra growth
Great stuff, Lucid! You know, I've _never_ used a monster expander. Well, I only play single-player, and in Dom 5, I nearly always wanted lots of magic paths, so I'd take a rainbow mage. (I'm not very serious about the game, anyway. I just play it for awhile, occasionally.) But I really need to try these, sometime.
You didn't mention anything about the Azi having 3 head slots. are there any interesting implications of that? like a stackable buff or something? im assuming its a net positive but i guess in some world it could be a negative that helms cost 3x as much
The Azi is at the head of it's game. Bad puns aside, the crowns generally give a mob spawner effect generally or help with summoning X monster. There's one with fastcaster that's kind of spicy. The Construction 9 ones are just wild. there's only 2 at construction 3 crown of lead and crown of the ivy king. So it's generally a later game thing I think.
Really appreciate your vids! Would also rlly like a video showing how/why you take a titan, maybe a titan play through. Do you have one up already by chance?
So Glamour does have the remote attack chassis copy spell. Not quite as flexible as other magic phase options, but being able to launch a monster at someone for no cost beyond the gems in the spell, win or lose, is a neat perk.
Are you referring to Project Image or Simulacrum? The former seems made for combat magic, as the image has 1 HP. Simulacrum, though, can definitely be interesting.
I might be wrong on this, but I think the sleep vines on the carrion dragon carry magic weapon blesses. Considering they each hit 3 times, plus the other attacks, it might make an interesting bless.
I tested out chill aura turtle.. Feels like he belongs in D tier. He takes a lot of damage even with 22 protection. He basically has nothing going for him except a lot of HP, high natural protection and amphibious, which means he's competing with Celestial Carp (titan with same exact paths) and earth serpent (better amphibious expander). Can't understand why he costs 220
I fear you've overlooked one significant advantage of the ancient kraken, viz., that he's an ancient giant octopus wizard with delusions of godhood. EDIT: though I'm very pleased that you *did* mention meteor shower. Meteor octopus is one of my favourite things in the whole game.
LoL, I'm putting this guy in S tier, only to explain why he should probably be in B or C tier but you like him so much he's in S tier, just ignore that he can't do the S tier things without a specific bless and magic research, so much lol
I think you should add 3 grades for each tier. So S could have S+, S, S-, then it can be followed by A+, A, A-, so you can have certain things be "Can work well", but be on that B+ tier so it'd be more obvious that it's good.
Vampire queen is easy S tier. Imo the best one. Expands naturally with fear from death 5. Then you have a true immortal with whatever paths you want I'm the mid-late game.
I usually hate dragons, they always just die on me at the least opportune moment, but I do have to give the earth one with acid breth a go, seems sturdier
You're right there's no point in doing an immobile tier list because irminsul is S++++++++++ tier and you'd be silly taking anything else. Especially now that it has the +1 nature gem site in dom6.
I am not sure I agree with the dog being dogshit anymore... sure the 1 attack holds him back. However fear was buffed quite a bit and he has 10, with darkpower perma up he basically has a 10+ statpoint bless. I am also unsure why corpseater was nerfed my 1000 hp crows were still a meme not a serious threat... However with the cave layer I think this on a nation that is ensured to start underground can be ok. He also is with the buffs tanky enough to clear out small groups of etheral shit... which can ruin your expansion paths early in the cave layer in my few test games so far.
Eastern dragons can lose to random light + heavy + archer provinces, they're too high IMO. The western dragons don't share this property, they are way more reliable vs easy-medium provinces before tech. The western dragons seem fine where they are, and thus the eastern should go lower.
rarely did I ever see a video where I disagreed with you more and it's only to the asian dragons yet, the kraken is not as good as you put it, for all the late game potential you can find alternatives and expansion is where it counts for monsters if unlike me you play competitively, the Azi, in addition to the dragon thing of having a full stots 2nd form making him a potentially far better mage than other monsters is one of if not the best expander, especially without bless, granted a high protection regenerating monster is more reliable and except earth snake that reuires bless/magic paths, so ignoring starting paths he is just a better drakon, which along with bore and bull I expected to make up the top category, just those 5, lastly for the asian dragons, their items giving a temp gem and boost in magic path shouldn't be underestimated and their quote on quote "human" form is a demi giant, so it's viable to gear them up and use that form with the dragon as a fallback and even if slightly weaker than other dragons, they are still dragons, their total late game potential beating the kraken by a long shot, now I'll go watch where you put them edit 1: Asphodel has holy spells that add regen to undead, if you use the non army wide version it shouldn't even require mr negates, it even seemed to work on non Asphodel undead in dom5, which tge Carrion Dragon should be considered an Asphodel undead anyway, it'd be trivial to fluff what you want to take a bless for, it's also the reason why I shy away from reforming flesh on Asphodel, just reliably fluffing 50 behemoths takes me 15 dryads... everything comes with drabacks and behemoths, like most Asphodel freespawn aren't sacred and thus can't take blesses anyway, I much rather add weapons blesses to sleep vine and all those sagitarian carcasses extra attacks
Lucid I like your stuff but please try to write a script you often say something and than go o I need to check or let met jus try this. It breaks the flow of the video
Writing a script makes these videos five or six times longer to make, so most of us don't bother... It does make a more professional video but part of the fun is ad libbing, and that feels a lot less like work to chat to the camera than scripting, recording audio then recording video

Great video but I see you forgot the angel boi
You need to release a mod to balance all these pretenders out better! Nice summary
Lol I also have starsector and dom 6 pinned to my taskbar
Eastern dragons can lose to random light + heavy + archer provinces, they're too high IMO. The western dragons don't share this property, they are way more reliable vs easy-medium provinces before tech. The western dragons seem fine where they are, and thus the eastern should go lower.
Yeah there’s an argument for that ; you might be right
rarely did I ever see a video where I disagreed with you more and it's only to the asian dragons yet, the kraken is not as good as you put it, for all the late game potential you can find alternatives and expansion is where it counts for monsters if unlike me you play competitively, the Azi, in addition to the dragon thing of having a full stots 2nd form making him a potentially far better mage than other monsters is one of if not the best expander, especially without bless, granted a high protection regenerating monster is more reliable and except earth snake that reuires bless/magic paths, so ignoring starting paths he is just a better drakon, which along with bore and bull I expected to make up the top category, just those 5, lastly for the asian dragons, their items giving a temp gem and boost in magic path shouldn't be underestimated and their quote on quote "human" form is a demi giant, so it's viable to gear them up and use that form with the dragon as a fallback and even if slightly weaker than other dragons, they are still dragons, their total late game potential beating the kraken by a long shot, now I'll go watch where you put them
edit 1: Asphodel has holy spells that add regen to undead, if you use the non army wide version it shouldn't even require mr negates, it even seemed to work on non Asphodel undead in dom5, which tge Carrion Dragon should be considered an Asphodel undead anyway, it'd be trivial to fluff what you want to take a bless for, it's also the reason why I shy away from reforming flesh on Asphodel, just reliably fluffing 50 behemoths takes me 15 dryads... everything comes with drabacks and behemoths, like most Asphodel freespawn aren't sacred and thus can't take blesses anyway, I much rather add weapons blesses to sleep vine and all those sagitarian carcasses extra attacks
No virtue? :(
globals go away on death even with immortality
Lucid I like your stuff but please try to write a script you often say something and than go o I need to check or let met jus try this. It breaks the flow of the video
Writing a script makes these videos five or six times longer to make, so most of us don't bother... It does make a more professional video but part of the fun is ad libbing, and that feels a lot less like work to chat to the camera than scripting, recording audio then recording video
Stygian is pronounced sti jee un
