  • A new series where I do my best to give my first impressions on how I would recommend playing some of the nations of Dominion 6. A lot has changed and I hope my perspective as a Dominions 5 veteran helps you get started!
    Do note I have not actually played a full multiplayer game as many of these as the game has only come out recently. I may redo some of these videos with more practical experience and information in the future.
    If you have other ideas or suggestions on playing the nation, please write them in the comments below for others to see and discuss!
    Shoutout to Sturm for creating the viewable summons at pretender screen mod

    Here are my written notes if that helps too
    Phaeacia
    Summary: Inspired nation from Homer's Odyssey of sailing demi-giants. All commanders can sail if start/end provinces have friendly dominion and are in range, even if there is unfriendly dominion inbetween.
    They have air magic on par with Caelum, great item forging, and versatile magic paths with access to communions
    Unit Summary
    Only 4 real units in the roster.
    -- inexpensive archer
    -- efficient light infantry with a spear, javelin, and high map move
    -- efficient heavy infantry
    -- Expensive sacred heavy infantry with magical equipment
    Commander Summary
    Half the commanders sail regardless of dominion effect, half do not. Remember which these are.
    Inexpensive researcher can lead troops and airshield themselves.
    Forger with many different paths, also good in communions.
    Versatile battle mage, troop leader, raider. Great chassis overall.
    Capital only mage comes in two flavors
    - Strong air magic, good water magic, no communion needed
    - More versatile magic options, but may need a communion.
    Weak priests
    Summons Summary
    Hesperides are fantasic, but harder to get.
    Dogs of gold and silver redundant due to unit roster.
    Keres are greek jinn with a fear aura, and hidden blood/death paths if you divine name them. Keep them in mind if you have death access.
    Hound of Twilight is cheap, has magic weapons, and a fear aura. hard to get the paths to cast, worth casting though if you can.
    Brass Bull looks good in dominions 6. May be worth casting depending on what nation youre up against, better versus humans.
    Spartae are a combat summon and are fantastic, especially for raiding.
    Non-National Summon -
    Telestic Animate
    Watchers
    Combined Roster Summary
    Extremely mobile and defensive unit roster, even more mobile and destructive mage corps.
    Combine sailing and high map move to strike at unexpected places on the strategic map.
    Bring a lot more forces than the enemy expects into battle, hold the line with few buffs while your mages destroy the enemy.
    Efficiently forge gear for important commanders.
    Spell Recommendations
    Mistform+
    ThunderStrike
    Frozen Heart
    Cloud of Dreamless Slumber
    Wailing Winds
    Thunder Ward+
    Storm(power)
    Group Stoneskin+ (Not ironskin)
    Cloud Trapeze
    Seeking Arrow
    Note* there are too many spells to fit here for this nation. They have efficient access to a lot.
    Pretender Design
    Although the first turns can be tough, generally doesn't need an expander and can go for a defender titan or something imprisoned.
    Their sacreds are very strong as is and don't need much, but would enjoy some resistances or extra stats.
    This means we can focus on either a minor bless, a titan, or some scales the nation would really enjoy.
    There are some lategame magical gaps that could be covered too. Mainly nature and astral.
    Gameplay
    (Early)
    Prioritize high income coastal provinces during expansion, we will want to fort these late for increased income.
    To sail with giants you need a storm captain, not a human sailor.
    Keep in mind sailing distances and try and have all of your forts reachable from the capital, or at least another fort.
    Some early lightning bolts coming from storm captains can help crack tough provinces (or players)
    (Midgame)
    Transition to the colossi heavy infantry from light infantry.
    Site search as best you can, gem economy is your lifeline later on.
    Weavers can forge items cheap, especially communion items.
    Thunderstrike is strong, especially turn 1 and 2 of combat.
    Mistform + air evocations are your bread and butter as you expand, but don't forget your other paths(especially via communion)
    (Late)
    Prioritize queens over princes since you'll be using a lot more communions
    Fatigue-plays like grip of winter or heat from hell can be countered by your water magic
    Glamour is very strong lategame and you should be casting wailing winds every major battle
    Beware magic duel killing your astral mages. There are some glamour spells that can help here, but its still a risk

    Some of your earth random weavers can stay outside the communion and do Power of the Spheres, Summon Earthpower, Gifts from Heaven

      One of the things I like about dom6 is that same combo you just said doesn't necessarily need to do gifts of heaven now. There are a lot more "mid tier" spells that X2 / X3s can cast. Dom5 that was pretty much it, now they can transition to doing group X buffs.

    i gave them a try in a blitz, I found the colossi light infantry tend to die very easily to archers, or in melee as they only have 8 armour and desperately need mistform or some other buffs. I managed to get some lizard shamans for barkskin but its something to be aware of.

    • @ZanGames
      @ZanGames  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      Yep! In dom5 I feel the fights were smaller and they ended quickly enough that the light armor was OKAY, we didn't need the heavy infantry. Now I feel a transition needs to be made and definitely cant keep light infantry the whole game for everything you just said.
      Lizard shamans are so key to plug in nature to the communions, great work!

    Great vid as always, spot on on the strat too in this one too, not much to add other than maybe cold res on the sacreds could be a consideration to then use cold mist cloud spells which can be pretty decent if not fighting undead

      Oh thats a good idea. AN Frost damage is always very spooky! I feel like lately with how strong evocations, some of the heavy infantry sacreds are finding roles as tanky bois to avoid friendly fire.

    Phaeacia is one of the coolest nations - love human mixed nations like it and Machaka, and it's got so many unique features. Appreciate that you're not at all scared of an being an island start surrounded by fish~

    Fun tip with watchers. They accept strength buffs and enlarge to do even more damage with their innate lightning attack reaching a whopping 27 armor negating lightning damage. I learned this the hard way trying to thug a throne 💀

    Really interesting question: are you going to do all nations in Dominions 6? Because if so could you also do a video on Communions since I haven't found a good video explaining it?

    • @ZanGames
      @ZanGames  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      I'll likely get many, but not all. A video on communions I can try to make in the future, but be warned I have very non-meta ideas on using communions. I would recommend either LucidTactic's video on it, or the more recent ChazzyBurger in the meantime.

    Thx for the vidéo, someday, gonna need a comunion guide cause I alwaise feed to complex to do and end up just spaming capital mages. also, why no you say that I need poison resistance in lategame? is there specific poison spell stronger than any other "nuke" spells?

    • @ZanGames
      @ZanGames  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The specific spell of concern is "Foul Vapors"
      In dominions 5 the spell was essentially: "If you don't have poison resistance, your entire army dies whether you win the fight or not."
      It is a lot harder to cast in dominions 6, but by the late game I am sure the threat will be very real.

    • @milomindbend
      @milomindbend 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Just to expand a little on what zan is saying, you'll want at least poison resistance (PR) 10 once a nation like c'tis or perhaps pythium gets foul vapors up (enchant 6 N4W1 2 N gems). Serpent's blessing (enchant 7 N4 2 N gems) gives all your troops PR 10. So what you'd do is take an indie like the lizardfolk shaman (N1S1) who can natively join your communion (if you find an indie w/o astral access give them a sky metal matrix) and you can probably script them to cast communion master, power of the spheres, maybe strength of gaia, and then serpent's blessing. They can also spam poison ward (enchant 4 N2 1 N gem) if you can't get up to N4. You can't natively craft a thistle mace (N booster) but maybe you can barter for one or have your pretender craft it. The hardest part will be having the nature gems as you can't natively site search (rainbow pretenders can though) so you'd need to find magic sites that produce X plus nature gems (for example air searching has a small chance of generating either W or D with the air gems @ the air site). You could also try to trade for nature gems.

    @CantusTropus 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

    One small problem though, is that in exchange for the new minor Glamour access, Illwinter chose to remove Phaecia's Fire access. It was always minor, but important, and now you can't do it anymore.

    • @ZanGames
      @ZanGames  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Trading lanterns and acid storm for glamour. I THINK thats okay. Maybe I am viewing glamour spells too lightly, but I feel like they will provide a much stronger lategame than fire would. Maybe a weaker midgame? Glamour still unexplored but looks strong on the surface.

    I'm a big fan of this nation, but I've grown to think that the Colossi Light Infantry are not quite up to snuff against Dom 6's buffed archers. I find that the Colossi Heavy Infantry are better general units once you have a modest amount of your cap circle (assuming you're using a heavy scales build, which you probably should be). Funny, since this is the opposite of how it was in Dom 5.

    • @ZanGames
      @ZanGames  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I agree with you on the infantry. In dom5 you could just use the light infantry forever, I don't feel thats the case anymore. Not only because the archer thing, because the battles "feel" longer due to more units involved.

    • @ZanGames

      They are! I cut out so much on this one already too. Granted I added a whole new section in the last two videos on combined roster.
      I wont be doing these next week, but I feel like I need to merge the "combined roster" and "gameplay" sections if I want to get my time down again. I am definitely aware and concerned over how the time keeps inching up...
      I even re-recorded two sections of this one to see if I cut time and it barely dented it.
