Been trying to get into JDM for quite some time and this video helped me get some of the basics down! Great content! ( Instant like as soon as I heard Kira's theme lol )
Hope the journey is going well. Ever since going EVO from Challenger ive never been able to look back. So much easier to maintain and wrench on yourself.
My dream car is the R33 Skyline. Owned mine for just over a year and since I learned quite a bit about it I will say it's a joy to drive and it does get it's fair share of attention. However the unfortunate reality is owning these cars are not all sunshine and rainbows and the reason is because it's going to take time and money to make it more reliable. If you ever buy a JDM with any RB engine you better keep an eye on your timing belt as these are interference type engines. And please for the love of God don't buy one unless you have the funds and time to put into it. Last thing you want is a car just sitting around and doing nothing to it. It's frustrating but chances are you may need to replace the timing kit including water pump, oiling system and adding a head drain adapter with a return line and recommend running it down to the pan or the sump, head restrictors to limit the flow of oil getting sucked up into the head (common issue with RBs), crank and cam seals, extended crank collar, and upgrade to a better oil pump like the N1. In order to do all of this you will need to pull out your whole engine which is exactly what I am going to do next year. A diy will take about 4 months and better to do it yourself than spend $1,000s of dollars on professionals to do it as long as you have a friend or know someone who knows exactly what they are doing. This kind of build is for bone stock reliability and it's highly recommended to do that first before upgrading the engine with aftermarket modifications for more power.
Well said! I imported an Evo 6 and it was Auction Grade 4 interior B bone stock. Even with low mileage they are older cars. Expect stuff to break and having the car on the sideline for a while if you are money constrained. Another big cost is the parts. If you want OEM parts you need to buy them from Japan which takes 1-2 weeks and then you have to deal with shipping fees and your countries import tax. If you are importing a JDM car here are the first things I did that made my car run like a gem, 1. Full timing as stated above (Water Pump, Serpentine belt, tensioner pulley, etc) 2. Do all the fluids in the car (Oil, Brake fluid, Transmission fluid, Diff fluid, in evo's make sure the AYC puck gets new fluid) 3. Rubber. Replace all the important rubber bits. Strut Tops, Bushings, Seals, Check rubber on suspension. 4. Get an underbody restoration or if you can't afford one at least seal it with an oil based spray like WaxOyl. (90s JDM cars love to rust) 5. Battery. Most battery's on JDM cars are original and only hold a charge for 3-4 days. If you can get all that done most 90s JDM cars will run like a charm, however the most important thing in the first place is to get a good car. Make sure you do your research and get it inspected before buying it! Good Luck and enjoy the sunshine and rainbows!
Such a great video! For those who are new to the culture, please make sure to appreciate the inner part of jdms rather than the popular ones. Should do a part 2 for sub communities within the cultures

This video does indeed miss out a lot of details. There are arguably more important figures in the JDM scene but except for the 1990s tuner houses a lot of their identities are so obscure and not much information on them can be found in English language. The PS1 and PS2 era saw a slew of games focused on actual Japanese Street Racing, namely Shutokou Battle (Later imported to Western markets as Tokyo Xtreme Racer), Kaidou Battle (Known as TXR Drift in Western markets), Touge series, Battle Gear (Formerly Side By Side), Option Tuning Car Battle, Racing Lagoon, Wangan Midnight R(Pre-MaxiTune game based on Shutokou Battle). All of these are arguably more realistic than any Need For Speed game has ever come to JDM culture since Need For Speed is literally just based on glorified Hollywood movies. Initial D Arcade Stage and Wangan MaxiTune series are well known enough, I suppose. A side note, eurobeat was considered mainstream EDM in late 1990s, Wikipedia has a pretty accurate summary of it's influences and how it became popular so I will leave it at that. It was not generally associated with racing prior to Initial D's first release and in fact, the go to car music genre back then was rock and roll which is why you will find a lot of rock music in Japanese street racing movies from 1980s and 1990s.

@@class_shift I noticed that and I figured you just said 2 thousands for it because it released in almost the 2000s and started blowing up in like 09 in the US because of the movie.
Great video! I wish you mentioned the Toyota Celica or Toyota MR2 (that's a big one to miss, the MR-S and the Celica are probably the ONLY affordable old JDM cars left, apart from the MX-5 Miata), and mentioned that the drift king was a professional racing driver and not just some guy who drifts
Agree! I got a 5th gen Celica some months ago and I’m in the process of restoring it, it’s even going to get a new paint job soon. I highly recommend it, it’s a lovely car which has all of that JDM essence and as you say it’s sadly one of the few cars of this kind that you can still buy for relatively cheap, and it’s not going to last long. Not even Miatas are as accessible anymore, especially in Europe, where even an NB is going to cost you 7k+ for a decent unit.
For teen as starter i think Honda Civic EF,EG and EK is great choice. I start with EG hatch for collage drive. Love it, if more budget i prefer MR2-Silvia s14-s15 or Impreza GC8.
Great video, I just wanted to correct one thing in the start: The Japanese economy was great in the *80s*, and was terrible in the 90s. What happened was car companies started development on all these super cool cars in the 80s expecting a lot of wealthy young buyers. But come around to when those developing cars could finally be released. Well, the bubble burst and the terrible 90s kicked in. Few are employed, even fewer are making bank, no one could buy those legends. It's why so many of the cool 90s JDM cars had such short lifespans. Which is why the AE86, which was around since the 80s was such a legend. Working class guys could buy it new in the 80s, and the same now poorer working class guys could buy it used in the 90s and participate with the rich guys in the car scene.
Great video, not into jdm really (had to look up what JDM stands for since you didn't spell it out for me) but I learnt and enjoyed it a lot! Best way of asking subs i ever seen. PS. I think I might be into JDM by now...
Automodelista Is a game that came out on the GameCube, Xbox, and PS2. It is 100% drawing from the golden era and is an absolute blast to play. Very cool soundtrack. It takes a professional yet playful approach to cars I would highly recommend it!
I recommend playing old Tokyo Extreme racing game series, TED2 is my favorite! One other channel I also would recommend watching is Juicebox which is owned by an Irish lad that goes to a garage with his friends and finds cars all around Ireland and learn about the origins of the cars and past life of JDM cars before they we're imported from Japan. He's restoring an AE86 and visits japan from time to time. Its so much fun to listen to them talk about what we're JDM cars and what they used them for back in the 90s and earlier.
hey class_shift, im just starting to get into cars and JDM seems very cool. thihs video really helped clear things out and taught me the basics of JDM, but could you make a newer version as it is 2022 and i want to the 2022 JDM cars and a more advanced guide. Thanks!
There;s just something about 80s JDM I vibe with more than 90s JDM AW11, A70 Supra, FC, z31 Idk why but something about this era gets me more than SW20, FD, mk4 Supra, or Z32 300zx

Kaido Battle: Touge no Densetsu/Tokyo Xtreme Racer Drift 2 is also a great jdm game, where u race with rivals in different mountain passes, much like initial d however it's a ps2 game not a pc game so u may need an emulator
Miss my Mitsubishi Galant 8th gen 🥹 First car 2.5 v6 NA 180 hp on dyno.. Would Civic 1.5 hatchback 95-98 be a good second jdm? Dont drive over 120 kmph really
Even though nothing was new info to me except a few channels I didn't know about and influential people that I didn't know much of or their names. But still, interesting video.
im daydreaming of owning a jdm car in the future, but I don't know how to drive manual transmission, ofcourse i dont have budget aswell haha, but ive immersed myself lately on these cars, from watching initial d to vlogs and also...collecting diecast cars!!!! i recommend collecting diecast cars instead for broke boys like me, i would stare at the car for hours while watching vlogs and its very satisfying!!

For video games as mentioned the old NFS games are great due to it's customization freedom, makes you feel like a tuner, but I also recommend NFS Heat since it's like Most Wanted. Gran Turismo if you wanna feel like a proper racing driver. Forza games are good too.
@@class_shift It also has a wide selection of cars from JDM, American muscle to European exotics. And great amount of tuning posibilities. Also the open world gameplay.
I would recommend Kaido Battle: Touge no Densetsu/Tokyo Xtreme Racer Drift 2 (ps2 only) for video games as it has a very wide selection of jdms n racing in mountain passes
additional great cars from japan that can't be ignored: nissan silvia/s platform s13 s14 s15, 180sx/240sx infiniti g cars (jdm skylines post-r34, essentially same platform and engine as the z) toyota celica, awd and fwd platforms lexus is platforms toyota vip cars (chaser, crown...) mazda rx7, rotary engine' and not forgetting the new mark v gr supra and gr corolla (some of these aren't strictly jdm cars, same goes for some in the video. as long as they're not exclusively for the japanese domestic market)
I love jdm cars, I hope to one day bug myself an S15. For now my attainable dreamcar is a Hyundai Genesis coupe. Which I know is Korean but still I think they are really cool. Also my uncle got me a Subaru legacy when I turned 18 so that's cool but I'm not sure if I want to put money into it I'd rather start saving for a Genesis as soon as possible.
Honda fit woulda made a good entry for budget newer options the manual is pretty fun somewhat sporty but handles excellently. Lots of people opt to track them.
I really recommend watching THE SQUIDD. He posts really good documentary type videos, he’s a good talker and he words it so it isn’t boring. He’s also done videos on some of the cars mentioned in this video and others as well as some of the people mentioned in this video.
in central-eastern europe we have a thing simillar See, we have alot of mountainous roads with alot of curves and such, most notably in the Caucasus, Urals and Carpathians! So we also got our own dosage of JDM but not only that, also the old soviet cars like Škoda or VAZ, most notable mentions are Škoda 120L and Lada VAZ 2101 we might not have a official drifto kingo, but we do have a pretty massive culture involving with drifting mountainous roads in either slavic or japanese cars.. sometimes an old Golf But the most important thing to note in difference is that, In the Slavic Drifting thing, it doesn't have a official name, Car is Car, Prefferably it has 4 wheels, but that's just a prefference.
I feel like this video coulda been named “a guide to cars that should be worth $10,000 but sell for $150,000”

eurobeat. The history of Eurobeat is so fascinating and it could legitimately take an hour to two hours to explain the basics lmao
As a digital eurobeat junkie i need to know where you can get these cd's
@@RallyAddict555 most of them are in Japan from collectors and Tower Records
Even though there are some mistakes, as a car fan I'm sure car enthusiasts will appreciate the spirit and enthusiasm put in this video. Plus, you did a good job summarising and spreading the culture.
(though im sure some people will get mad at you for putting the supra as a mid tier 90's JDM car)
thank you Carbonated Wasabi-san, yeah I did round off certain car releases, the r34 was released in 1998, but i put it in the 2000s category
"whoott the supra wasnt released with 1500Hp? 😱😱" hehe
@@class_shift I noticed that and I figured you just said 2 thousands for it because it released in almost the 2000s and started blowing up in like 09 in the US because of the movie.
@@class_shiftyou forgot the S2000, not judging
Just call it a 70s classic
THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT IVE BEEN LOOKING FOR, time to spend $350 on a racing setup so I can live my drifting dream
Really do admire this JDM Culture!
Jdm is what got me into cars. This video is the perfect walkthrough of jdm. I wish i watched this when i first got into jdm/cars in general.
thanks ma dude
@@class_shift no problem 👍
Im almost glad he didnt talk about them. The less popular they are, the cheaper they remain
@@sigmamale4147 noooo I want my Celica to appreciate so I can get a GT86 in the future 😂
@@ShreN_ naah man keep the last affordable japanese 90s cars affordable
@@ShreN_ i have a 91 MR2 as well
For teen as starter i think Honda Civic EF,EG and EK is great choice. I start with EG hatch for collage drive. Love it, if more budget i prefer MR2-Silvia s14-s15 or Impreza GC8.
if you’re more into speed than sliding, a really great jdm anime is wangan midnight! it’s the reason the 240z is my dream car haha
I can see why this is for beginners, it's simple but leaves info to be discovered for later
Great video, I just wanted to correct one thing in the start:
The Japanese economy was great in the *80s*, and was terrible in the 90s.
I know somewhat about JDM culture but I knew this was a good video the second the eurobeat intensified
I love JDM culture and I'm glad you make a video for newbies xD
Sad that JDM Masters quit youtube, his reviews were the most in depth and enjoyable!
Great video, not into jdm really (had to look up what JDM stands for since you didn't spell it out for me) but I learnt and enjoyed it a lot!
Best way of asking subs i ever seen.
PS.
I think I might be into JDM by now...
That sponsor made me insta follow🤣🤣 Great Kontant man
tq boss
Automodelista Is a game that came out on the GameCube, Xbox, and PS2. It is 100% drawing from the golden era and is an absolute blast to play. Very cool soundtrack. It takes a professional yet playful approach to cars I would highly recommend it!
Very glad this video found me (just getting into cars)
This helped me a lot to enter the jdm culture
I recommend playing old Tokyo Extreme racing game series, TED2 is my favorite! One other channel I also would recommend watching is Juicebox which is owned by an Irish lad that goes to a garage with his friends and finds cars all around Ireland and learn about the origins of the cars and past life of JDM cars before they we're imported from Japan. He's restoring an AE86 and visits japan from time to time. Its so much fun to listen to them talk about what we're JDM cars and what they used them for back in the 90s and earlier.
great recommendation!
@@class_shift or gran turismo 1- gran turismo 7 for real jdm history
hey class_shift, im just starting to get into cars and JDM seems very cool. thihs video really helped clear things out and taught me the basics of JDM, but could you make a newer version as it is 2022 and i want to the 2022 JDM cars and a more advanced guide. Thanks!

There;s just something about 80s JDM I vibe with more than 90s JDM
AW11, A70 Supra, FC, z31
Idk why but something about this era gets me more than SW20, FD, mk4 Supra, or Z32 300zx
Kelisa legend 🔥🔥🔥Appreciate the content sir, been trying to learn more about jdm car do not know where to start. Thanks for the video
Thank you boss
akira the RWB GOD🤩he makes one of the most insane looking porsche cars in the world. This famus singer/music producer in norway called Mio flew him form japan to norway to build him and rwb Porsche its awesome🤩
The driver you showed as the drift king driving the trash taste crew isn’t Keiichi Tsuchiya, it’s a D1GP drifter for Team Orange
Very W video but i feel like wangan midnight is 100% worth mentioning
I'm learning because of my best friend wanna make our conversation interesting
starting with city lover city rider, thats amazing
just brought my first car about a month ago. its a 2006 Infiniti g35 coupe. needs work but im looking forward to the journey!
the video is for those who are very ignorant of the topic of JDM and cars in general, or even for those who do not understand cars and use them without thinking about aggregates and resources, but the idea itself is good
hey for a small channel you have some of the most amazing stuff so, keep it up
thanks!
We need a part two, that mentions Phonk, the LFA, Mitsubishi 3000 gt, and more.
Forget phonk, embrace eurobeat

Lol really enjoyed ur vid, it has got that funny vibe uk..😂😂
Kaido Battle: Touge no Densetsu/Tokyo Xtreme Racer Drift 2 is also a great jdm game, where u race with rivals in different mountain passes, much like initial d
however it's a ps2 game not a pc game so u may need an emulator
outrun 2sp got me hooked on muscle cars and JDM
Ayo another fellow kelisa driver
Miss my Mitsubishi Galant 8th gen 🥹
First car 2.5 v6 NA 180 hp on dyno..
Would Civic 1.5 hatchback 95-98 be a good second jdm? Dont drive over 120 kmph really
wasn’t expecting to hear mitsu in this vid pleasantly surprised
instantly subscribed after the intro
thanks ma dude
Even though nothing was new info to me except a few channels I didn't know about and influential people that I didn't know much of or their names.
But still, interesting video.
My favorite JDM car predates the eras in this video quite a bit: the 1966-67 Prince Gloria. One of the coolest, though, is the Mazda RX3.
im daydreaming of owning a jdm car in the future, but I don't know how to drive manual transmission, ofcourse i dont have budget aswell haha, but ive immersed myself lately on these cars, from watching initial d to vlogs and also...collecting diecast cars!!!! i recommend collecting diecast cars instead for broke boys like me, i would stare at the car for hours while watching vlogs and its very satisfying!!
dudee its not impossible man, wish you the best of luck grinding to get your jdm car 😎😎👍 im also saving up for a brz
@@class_shift youre gonna get it soon 🤞
i am a car professional, and this vid is definetly good (u forgot sammit as a youtuber definetly) it helps with the basics, but mybe make the vid a bit longer and explain stufflike the rotary in the mazda rx series or something like that.
I watched a restoration video of 1997 Honda civic on brotomotive yt channel and I get to know about these cool cars which existed and heard the term (j d m )and now I m watching ur video ...
That eurobeat intro was beautiful
that AE86 looks alot like the 85 without the popup headlights😂 , oh and good vid
For video games as mentioned the old NFS games are great due to it's customization freedom, makes you feel like a tuner, but I also recommend NFS Heat since it's like Most Wanted. Gran Turismo if you wanna feel like a proper racing driver. Forza games are good too.
I agree 💯💯 Ive been addicted to Forza lately, awesome game
@@class_shift It also has a wide selection of cars from JDM, American muscle to European exotics. And great amount of tuning posibilities. Also the open world gameplay.
I would recommend Kaido Battle: Touge no Densetsu/Tokyo Xtreme Racer Drift 2 (ps2 only) for video games as it has a very wide selection of jdms n racing in mountain passes

I hope to get a nice 90's jdm car in my life, they are so damn funky and neat
Literally, the most well written video i've ever saw
thank you ma man, more videos like this coming up
additional great cars from japan that can't be ignored:
nissan silvia/s platform s13 s14 s15, 180sx/240sx
infiniti g cars (jdm skylines post-r34, essentially same platform and engine as the z)
toyota celica, awd and fwd platforms
lexus is platforms
toyota vip cars (chaser, crown...)
mazda rx7, rotary engine'
and not forgetting the new mark v gr supra and gr corolla
(some of these aren't strictly jdm cars, same goes for some in the video. as long as they're not exclusively for the japanese domestic market)
Don't think anyone ignores those since they are the most generic list
I love jdm cars, I hope to one day bug myself an S15. For now my attainable dreamcar is a Hyundai Genesis coupe. Which I know is Korean but still I think they are really cool. Also my uncle got me a Subaru legacy when I turned 18 so that's cool but I'm not sure if I want to put money into it I'd rather start saving for a Genesis as soon as possible.
best of luck saving! i'm also saving for a brz
Woof, slept on the S2000
You said a lot of small things and connections I would’ve never gotten together alone
Like how the brz is the successor to ae86

@@class_shift too much use of term jdm in Japanese cars that are not jdm

What do you expect from a lazy sounding american
I really recommend watching THE SQUIDD. He posts really good documentary type videos, he’s a good talker and he words it so it isn’t boring. He’s also done videos on some of the cars mentioned in this video and others as well as some of the people mentioned in this video.
he's amazing
im very sad the s2000 wasnt mentioned :((
Edit : but great vid i love to see this :))
in central-eastern europe
we have a thing simillar
See, we have alot of mountainous roads with alot of curves and such, most notably in the Caucasus, Urals and Carpathians! So we also got our own dosage of JDM but not only that, also the old soviet cars like Škoda or VAZ, most notable mentions are Škoda 120L and Lada VAZ 2101
we might not have a official drifto kingo, but we do have a pretty massive culture involving with drifting mountainous roads in either slavic or japanese cars.. sometimes an old Golf
But the most important thing to note in difference is that, In the Slavic Drifting thing, it doesn't have a official name, Car is Car, Prefferably it has 4 wheels, but that's just a prefference.
enlightening
eye opening
3:50 you mean the new BMW right ?😏
