    I gotta give it to the GT1000 here. Not that the HX sounds bad.. thing sounds great. But the GT1000 just sounds more realistic, less digital. Boss's previous generation of COSM pedals were good, but this AIRD thing has some magic sauce !

    the amp compression on the core isnt as clumpy and gives the impression its more open and dynamic giving chords more movement musically if thats important and should be and thats what a tube amp does

    So the boss seems more dynamic which at times doesn’t feel as warm, however in saying that for high gain tones that is a plus and for those tones that are lacking some warmth it may be viable to run a compressor to get that warmth and more subtle dynamic response back into the tone whereas the l6 you get what you get

    thanks for the video. It is so complex to make this kind of videos. For that I will give you a like and a subscribe. However, it is difficult for me to find a good / strong difference between the 2. They both sound awesome. Maybe one has a stronger Bass EQ, or volume, its so hard to tell them apart. Any help on specific points where you actually hear them very different?

  • @adoremotion
    @adoremotion 3 ปีที่แล้ว +75

    GT is more focused , less clouded and fluffy rambling. I own both. The “analog” part people speak of is eq, more bottom from Stomp. Use an eq. Also the GT 32bit for fixing digital peaks is excellent. GT is a very capable amp sim and I get a sound I like and is “unique” faster than the preset amps from line6 where I’m battling against boxy sounding and a wobbling low end that doesn’t fit in the mix. I rather have a focused sound. I know how the roland works, had a vg99 and gt001. Once I understood what and how it does it worked out better. Choosing different cabs (not IR) than the “modeled” worked better in a mixing workflow. I must say that many GT demo’s are pretty terrible but this is a good one. If you can afford both get them, all the tools you need. I have had a podxt and 3 also. From my experience I grabbed for the roland stuff more often.

      Thanks very much UFO this info was very usefull for me. I returned a PodGo because I didn't like the amp sims. The PodGo had some good effects though. I bought a NUX mg-300 which I am satisfied with but there are not that many effects and I also have now 2 bass guitars, so I am looking for a ekstra modeller/multieffect device more that can handle both guiar and bass. I think the Boss GT-1000Core would be a good choice. ( Always looking for something new to buy 😀 )

    • @raichoo
      @raichoo 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Can confirm. Getting a "unique" sound is pretty straightforward with the GT-1000. The amp models extremely flexible, I've had modelers where a lot of amp models where boxed into a single sweet spot and everything else sounded awful. This is not the case with the BOSS however. They really upped their game, I had the GT-3 around 20 years ago and *gosh* I hated the preamp models in that thing. This however is about as much fun as my Axe FX.

    • @TheDilligan
      @TheDilligan 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I agree their demos are bad. My biggest beef as a GT1000 user is knowing that Boss is generally not good at customer support. I'm afraid they are just going abandon support for the unit. After it released they did an update every few months and now there has been nothing for a year and a half. And they still have the "Output Select Library" up on the website even though they abandoned the idea.
      But AIRD cabs are incredible. Better than any IR out there.
      And the output select alone makes it better than any of the competition.

      I would use it with an engl tube preamp which I love, and for effects and cab simulations...which one would you go with?
      Whitch one is more transparent and respectful of dynamic?
      I Heard that Hx stomp it's a kind of tone sucker... What about the boss?
      Thank you

  • @Stefan-
    @Stefan- 3 ปีที่แล้ว +21

    The difference in sound regarding amp simulation between these units are pretty much EQ and different settings or use of speaker emulation.

    • @TheDilligan
      @TheDilligan 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yeah it's mostly coming down to Line6 IRs vs Boss AIRD.
      Boss AIRD is more realistic, if you're accustomed to miking the real amps. But if you're just looking for something that sounds good, they are both great. Comes down to preference.

    • @andreil1234
      @andreil1234 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      There's a difference however in feel that, all other considerations regarding sound quality left aside, can be quite important for some.
      I have an HX Stomp and find it absolutely great for what it is, however there's always something off about its reactivity to playing, feels rigid and has some perceivable input lag. The GT1k on the other hand feels much more responsive and immediate, which is something I really value.

    Generally pretty comparable to each other, but I do prefer the HX overall. That said, I would have no issues with using the Boss and know that it would give me the sounds I wanted/needed with some tweaking. I’m not crazy about the user interface and input/output layout on the GT, and those are 2 of the areas where I like the HX stuff a lot better, but again, after a learning period it’d be just fine.
    Lots of amazing modeling/profiling available right now for guitarists, and you really can’t go wrong with the majority of them.
    Good comparison vid, by the way. It seemed like there was an effort to make sure several important variables were properly accounted for.

  • @bombshelboy

    Great video, excellent playing.
    I learned that the Line 6 has a thicker harmonic response and thus dynamics don't come through as nicely. They both have pretty excellent tone overall, but that saturated response is detrimental if you want more control, so I guess I want the GT-1000 Core is what I'm saying

    • @bombshelboy
      @bombshelboy ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I just want to add, wow, that Line 6 octaver is hella inaccurate! Listen back, it gets notes wrong a couple times whereas the Boss nails it

    • @JohnGarnerIII
      @JohnGarnerIII ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree. We don't want tone to be controlled by anything other than us. The BOSS unit seems to allow players to determine the exact sound the want. The othet unit sounded great..but even with no effects it colored the tone.

    • @ShaighJosephson
      @ShaighJosephson ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Wise choice... The Core's dynamics are cleaner because it's 32-bit/96khz...

  • @TheDilligan
    @TheDilligan 2 ปีที่แล้ว +40

    In my experience playing them, the amps are way better on the GT1000 because it responds in a much more realistic way. Like not only in terms of the saturation but the actual sound of the speaker emulation - the way a real amp does. The HX just uses IR's, so the speaker sounds the same no matter what you put into it. But the GT1000 sounds the way these amps actually realistically sound when you mic them.
    Part of it is the AIRD tech on the boss unit and part of it is that the Boss samples at 32bit, so it has a greater dynamic range.
    That said, they are so freaking close. I currently own the full size GT1000 and I kinda want a Stomp to go on my analog board as a DI solution - it's small, sounds good and the UI on it is just so much more user friendly.

    I'm new on this. But isn't it true that GT1000Core don't have much amp modelling compared to HX Stomp? The amp comparison, is it using the 'template available only' on Core, and match it with HX Stomp? Since Core don't have many variance of Amp modelling in it?
    However, I feel that Core have more dynamics and response, despite it only have few options of modelled amp in it. Great video, thumbs up 👍

    • @ShaighJosephson

  • @marksun7846

    for me, gt1000 core is more powerful and can use far more effects same time than line6. It's a better portable effect-unit but as a stomp box on board, hx stomp is just enough.
    And the most important is line6's operating system is easier to understand and operate.
    So not just because of the sound quality.

  • @Mert-kz2wr

    I have two valve amps at home, and using them with two different sets of effects: One is a standalone Helix LT, the other one is a pedalboard which includes the GT1000Core and few drive/fuzz/booster pedals from JHS, Xotic, Proco, Dod and Mesa Boogie. What I can say is, both units are great, as you can also follow from the video. If I had to let one of the units go, I would really have hard time to decide. For me the drive tones are the best from valve amp, as well as sometimes from analog pedals. But when I don't feel like carrying my pedalboard with me, I am sure that the pedal modulations on both Helix and Boss will be more than enough for me. They emulate the sounds of the analog units just perfect, sometimes fool myself if it is the pedal itself, or the modulation from the Helix or Boss. Digital effects are wonderful, I don't even see myself buying chorus/phaser/flanger/tremolo/pitch pedals anymore. My only wish would be that the Boss had few more effects like Waza series, Dimension chorus and so on.
    My take on this, get whichever you fancy, you cannot go wrong eitherways. Great video!!!

    Overall, I think I would go with the GT-1000. Dynamic range seemed more natural. From a recording perspective, the GT sounds seem like tones I would have to do less tweaking to fit into the mix. Not that the Helix tones are bad, they are totally useable, just might take a little bit more to finesse them to work.

    I don't have either, so no axe to grind. Frankly they are very close and on some the Boss wins on others the Line 6.
    However I much prefer the visibility of the Stomp's screen - it looks easy to read if you are standing over it. Best, Pete
    PS Sorry I meant to add that if it doesn't take off as Boss want. they will drop supporting it after a couple of years.

      Boss units don't normally get released when they're only half ready though so the support is not so much of an issue. In any case, I think it's better to buy a unit based on what it does now, not on what the manufacturer claims it might do after a few firmware updates.

    Both units sound fairly close in general. The Boss amps have more top end and clarity, The HX sounds a bit warmer. The delays and reverbs sound more digital on the Boss and more analog on the HX. So I prefer those effects on the Stomp. Pitch effects sound better on the HX too I think. But overall both units are close in quality vs price. It's a matter of taste which one is the best for you. If I was deciding between these two, and was planning to use it almost exclusively with headphones as a quiet way to practice, is there one that sounds better through headphones than the other? Because from this video, while I can hear subtle differences, those differences would not lead me to think the Boss is worth the extra $100. But if the difference through headphones is more pronounced, I would not be opposed to the extra cost. Any thoughts?

      I considered both but went with the GT-1000. Going back 20-odd years I've always been a bit suspect of Line 6, tones always seemed "close, but no cigar" to me. That said, for my computer-based amps and effects, I tried Helix Native against Bias Amp2 and Bias FX2, and Helix was better, but not hundreds of dollars better, so I went with the Bias apps. I think the GT-1000 sounds amazing, and this is coming from a guy who still has a perfectly good GT-8 out in the garage...I've been messing with these things for a long time. The A.I.R.D. modeling is next-gen stuff, but you have to dig in and learn your way around to tweak things to taste. The factory patches are good, but have some fun noodling around with all the goodies included and make the tones your own. I looked at it this way, for $700 I'm getting virtually every Boss pedal you can buy, from Boss, instead of a company that is trying to copy Boss products...that's a bargain alone, much less all the other things it can do. Also consider this; the Stomp has been around a while...for an extra $100 you can get a brand-new product and future-proof yourself for the next few years.

      Agreed. L6 sounds close. That’s exactly right, and I could never stop hearing that it sounded CLOSE. Boss does a great job at the very least in sounding good, even if it is only close. L6 sacrifices something I find crucial, a liveliness in the tone, for whatever end they reach.

      Got the GT-1000CORE and it sounds and feels absolutely amazing. I did a lot of research and comparison between the HX Stomp and the GT-1000 and in the end BOSS came out as the winner for me. I know it's subjective, some people might prefer the HX Stomp, but modellers these days have become so good that it's mostly personal preference. I also have an Axe FX at home, but the CORE is small enough to carry it in my gig bag and I don't feel like I'm compromising on the road, compared to the Axe FX.

      I have both floorboard models, L6 is the LT model. I play through a Yamaha THL10. It’s a little stereo amp modeler with a “wide open” setting that seems to project the sound well beyond the front of the cabinet. The amp is pretty incredible on its own, but the floorboards have way more effects with plenty of control. So I built a patch in each unit that has stereo delays, chorus, and Leslie simulation. As you would expect, I did my best to build patches as close as possible for comparison. I connect the floorboards to the amp using the headphone outs to the auxiliary in on the amp. When connecting this way, the signal is not affected by the amp modeling. So the headphone out to the auxiliary in is the key and this is why I am attempting to answer your question. In this setup the line 6 comes through a bit more compressed/warmer/darker sounding, and the stereo spread is clearly discernible but not “wide”. Kind of what you would expect from a stereo system. The BOSS, however, is a very different story. You cannot believe the difference until you experience it for yourself. The BOSS is very open and transparent, not compressed “sounding” even though I am using some compression in the patch but it is not interfering with natural space at all. Just a beautiful clear sound that allows the effects to do their thing, and they do in a big way. The sound appears to be coming from everywhere in the room. The interaction between the two technologies, the YAMAHA and BOSS is causing each to shine. But the point is, the technical differences between the L6 and BOSS can clearly be heard in this setup. Some people describe hearing “fizziness” in the BOSS tones but EQ will tame the Fizziness. Even L6 produces fizziness but the reason it’s more noticeable in BOSS is because the tone is more transparent and clear. It’s a sense of “space” the line 6 just does not produce or project. It’s just not there. FYI -My helix is for sale.

    Initially I liked the GT 1000 better when listening on my smartphone speaker. But when I plugged in my studio headphones, I heard a crisp smoothness with the HX that sounded very analog. I think the HX may win by a small margin. Tape delay was very nice. Both sound good though.

    there is a top end shrill on the Boss that sounds like frying bacon when overdriving certain amps/pedals. Maybe it is too high resolution or something or maybe the stock cabs irs are a bit thin, don't know but it is not an eq thing. When listening to the spring reverb section you can hear how much more extended top end there is vs the helix, the boss is very mid scooped sounding in general. I like the boss but I think that in this case even though it may be technically higher resolution and better on paper, that added resolution is working against the unit. Maybe a bit to revealing above 8k or so, if it were fixed in an update I would grab this thing in a heart beat. Maybe you could eq it but I think boss should revisit some of the code and update this unit and add some more cabs/amps mics to the line up. Have they added anything to this series since release as far as firmware updates go? Thanks for your time.

    In Australia the HX Stomp is about $100 more expensive than GT Core, which seems to be the opposite of almost everywhere else? Not sure why. The Boss has much lower current draw, which is also a selling point for me, as it's easier to integrate into a small portable pedal setup.

      @@tarkgundogdu8940 I tried that to be honest. I used to shut off the speaker emulation all together and run it into a power amp and 4x12 mixed speaker cab. The sound was fairly decent, but the pedals and amp models have no dynamics at all, and a lot of the distortion/drive pedals (especially fuzz) have zero sustain. For the time it was one of the most loaded pedals out there, but to be honest, I could get better sounds out of my Roland VG88 most the time back then because it had dynamics. But either of them into my poweramp worked better for live situations.

    Other things to consider - if you go for the Stomp you can by Helix native software for £100 instead of £400. And since the Stomp is already £200 less... Also L6 continually adds new amps and fx with new firmwares. In this test I slightly prefer the Boss sound, but I think eq will make an enormous difference to both as will IRs. They both have very good PC/Mac editors

      Hang on so if you buy a Line6 product that 's already running the Helix software, they still make you pay again for a separate copy of it? Doesn't sound like much of an incentive to me. Also, if someone prefers the sound of the Boss unit, a discount on the Helix software wouldn't be in the least appealing to my mind.

      @@markseymour8365 well you’re buying a plugin that does everything the hardware modeler does.
