They both sound good to me, as does my Headrush. Maybe I'm just undiscerning, but I find myself caring less and less about new gear. I need to be more creative to progress my sound, not spend more.
same here dude! alwaya wasting a huge time comparing every gear, changing, wasting...instead of studying and progressing my music! That's the new evil of high availability of products and technologies.
I mean I liked the tones here as well but, I can also make my HX Stomp sound fantastic lol. So I completely agree and I try my best not to look at these things for more than entertainment and knowledge. If I see something worth upgrading for I will but, still hasn’t happened so let the mature software age like fine wine.
Distortion is more compressed and gainy in Boss, but maybe it's just a matter of tweaking. I wish everyone who A/B equipment would spend the extra minute on a setting and see how similar it is possible to get.. and the extra seconds of a long bending and vibrato note, that will show which amp/preset/guitar, just dies and which one comes alive - flying fast and precise fingers, any piece of equipment can handle :) Otherways, great playing and reviews... always !!
Thanks for demonstrating that the GT 1000 core does well vs the Quad Cortex. I admit that I like the Marshall a bit more on the latter, but the Boss amps are not really exact models of specific amps so that may be the difference. Your review has revealed to me that my investment in the GT 1000 was a good one. Saludos!
I’ve owned all the modellers ,the boss and helix can be made to sound good but the Qc,axe fx and kemper just sound better IMO. The boss effects are brilliant though .
Completely agree. I prefer the amp modelling in the QC over that in the Helix, but I don’t use any of the amp models in the QC at all, just the amp captures. I’ve A/B’d my kemper against the QC a fair few times and do slightly prefer the sound of the captures over the profiles, but it is the UI in the QC which makes shine for me, such that I’d rather play through the QC with its current limitations and wait for more and better FX over using the kemper.
in this video the boss sounded alot better. there is a topend sizzle that i dont like on the qc on the video, may not be there in person. ive got a korg ax30g from the 90s that has the same digital sizzle in the top end.
You needed to first set-up the Input into the Boss GT-1000 Core (Adjustable), which allows You to choose your pickups you are using, as well as the Input Gain)!! 👍 Because in your Vid/Audio Comparison re: Tones, Patches, FX, Amps, etc.,.... You've got the QC sounding Fuller and Louder!! As You know: Input and Output Gains and Volumes are Very Important!!!! Other than that just mentioned, Your Vid is Very Well done and really Instructive!!!! 👍 I'm home, at less than half the Cost of the Quad, I believe overall that the Boss GT-1000 Core is a much better Unit, way better Sounding, and is quite a bit more Naturally Responsive to Playing Styles and Pick Attacks!!!! Yay Boss!!!! The GT-1000 Core ROCKS!!!! 😎
How can I do this? I just brought one and it's coming home tomorrow, I wanna get the best of that little monster. I could ended up buying some helix floor or head rush or whatever but reading a lot, I found gt 1000 core better than the others, but I know I gotta lot of work to do ahead to get that gt sounding like a beast.
I much prefer the sound of the captures in the QC over the models. I think the models are good, but the captures are in another league and it’s no wonder that Neural’s own literature labels the capturing process as it’s flagship feature. I too like the reverb, delay and pitch FX on the QC, but I find some of the modulation FX wanting in areas. Whilst it is nice to have the models, I do wonder if things would have worked out better at launch if they abandoned the amp modelling altogether and spent the time on the FX and developing more captures. Even so, it is an amazing product, and the UI alone is one reason to buy and persevere with it.
I actually preferred thr boss on the fender setting. The qc sounded way better on marshall tones. Considering the price difference the boss holds its own
I sold my QC and bought a Boss GX 100. It's just so much more fun and all is already there, what you are waiting for on the QC: Very good effects, an editor, easy too use, excellent sounds and it feels like an amp too. Modelers are computers, they loose worth very quickly. WIth the QC there a lot of promises. Till they get there, this will be an old unit, computerwise. And the much cheaper units like the boss gx-100 will evolve and get much better too in the meantime.
I absolutely love the quad. The feel and the sound. The UI is the best around. Not tied to a pc. At times need a cell. Easy workflow. Compact. I passed on it 3x costing me way more money because I absolutely couldn’t stand the feel of the Kemper and the sounds were meh. The rig manager was awful. The tiny screen is just that, tiny. Needed pedals to help. Same with helix. Both sold and glad about it. But saw a few guys using the quad. Watched some videos and gave it a chance. I’m glad I did. Bought two. But amps and pedals come first. It’s the quad that’s fun to fool with. They’ve updated the captures and profiles. As a pedal addict I don’t even need any external pedals to help it out. It’s got enough stuff in it to keep me busy for a long time. It’s in no way old. Thousands and thousands have been sold. There’s a handful for sale on reverb. Yet a ton of Kempers and helix’s and other modelers for sale on there. The plug in whiners are just that. They want to sit in front of a computer and buy inexpensive plug ins. Check any pro and are they on stage with a plug in? No they’re using the quad.
@@Utubesup7890you may have convinced me to replace my gt 1000 for the quad. I really want to be able to blend two dirty amps and two clean amps and be able to switch between the two blended sounds without switching patches. Hope I’m explaining it correctly. Thanks for your input.
I came across this video again and I dig it, it is a very good comparison. Now owning the GT1000 core for a few years I can say it holds really well in terms of tone quality. According to Boss they captured the amps together with the corresponding cabs however on some amps it is not a very good capture of the cab, one you switch it to a 3rd party IR you are good. I would have been nice if they had invested more time in the IR loading function as being able to run one at a time is kind of limiting. The feel of the device is very amp like, it responds really well to your dynamics and honestly if you use the manual mode plus add an external footswitch you have enough options. The reason I do not use it more live is that when running it with tube amps it has been kind of noisy, at least in the 4 cable situation. You even have some weird stuff that happens when you bring the volume function assigned to the expression pedal when running outside gain pedals. It is almost as if part of the signal remains in there going while you have killed the voulme. I find that the unit has several of these types of "gremlins" outside the box and it should not be the customer''s job to fish for a solution for each one of these things. I have had more success just using it as a standalone modeler. Has anyone experienced something similar.
Just got myself the GT-1000CORE and I'm really impressed. I also have an Axe FX at home but wanted to have something to just pop in my gig bag. Honestly this thing is amazing and a lot of fun to work with. I did a lot of comparison between the HX Stomp and the CORE before committing to one of those units and the CORE sounded better to me (which is totally subjective). Also the "feel" of the unit is really great. I think at this point modellers have become so good that it merely boils down to personal preference. Boss is definitely did their homework though.
Old video - anyway I‘ve used the QC for about a year replacing a Kemper but a couple of weeks ago I tried again the gt 1000 and I‘ll start to replace the QC with it. Why? The playing feel and response is my top criteria and Boss beats the competition here - by far in my opinion That and the x-amps are so much fun (After some Deep dives into EQ and Divider magic)
Quad Cortex sounds better some times, but not always, there are different sounds but not one better than others, I would suggest one blind test and I would expect surprises. Another point: The Quad Cortex seems to sound with more treble / mids by default. Tweaking the global EQ of the GT-1000 I think the sounds would be even more similar.
Thank you very much for the great insight. Excellent video as always. Only if the IR loading was less fiddlier on GT-1000. It would have been a real formidable option then. AIRD cabs not too shabby but.
@@spada60 My point being, since I already have an NS-2, GE-7, RT-20, TU-12, RV-6, DD-7, CE-5, TR-2 and a BF-2, I just don't see the benefit of me getting a GT-1000.
I liked the clean on the Boss and the drive on the QC but I think it was mostly because the QC sounded brighter and more cutting the Boss sounded much darker but I suppose that could be adjusted with some EQ. Thanks for the demo.
I thought the same thing - wonder if it can be tweaked by adjusting treble on Boss? BUT - I really dig the patch screen on the QC and the BOSS doesn't have ANY type of scratchpad or screen to show what the buttons are setup for - big downfall imo
Put the same IR into each unit and then play. The QC is only worthwhile if your capturing IR's. But there's a million of them available and most people don't have a room full of cabs or can't capture them with a decent mic anyway. The Core is 1/4 - 1/3 the price. If you're home recording it's the obvious choice. If you're not, the Fractal line is far and away better than the QC and it's not even close. Maybe QC ups their game someday. Maybe not.
Thanks Paul for this video. I have precisely been torn between these two units at the moment. I love Neural DSP plug-ins however I expected to see more variation in the effects section of the unit.
Pete Wahlquist Howdy!! I have a video suggestion!! How to incorporate the GT1000 and the Quad Cortex through the MIDI device on the GT1000. Since the Quad Cortex has improved tremendously over the past year, I believe there are thousands of musicians who are trying to use the GT1000 and the Quad Cortex together; especially for LIVE performances and mixing/recording. BYE
I've been battling against dropouts/gaps between switching patches for decades ever since these floor multi fx units first came out. And I can't believe FINALLY! They're making units without dropouts that are under thousands of dollars like in the past. I just got a crazy deal on a SONICAKE Matribox II for under $200 brand new and this dang thing has ZERO gaps when switching presets!! My jaw dropped to the floor. And the dang thing actually sounds fantastic. I got it for a backup because I sold my Pod Go a ways back when I needed cash. And to be honest, I like it better than the Pod Go. FX sound just as good to me but I never tried them side by side. But I do know I like the high gain WAY better! Crazy days we're living in gear-wise. I'm lovin it! Got a GT1000core coming in a few days. Time to update and let the MS-3 go (RIP MS-3)
I appreciate the effort but it doesn't make sense if both units were not compared under the same impulse response. We know now that IR stage is 90% of the signature. We can only compare non-linear distortion behavior between units, for example how well the unit responds light picking. And maybe we can compare how well the tonestacks on both units are accurate. There are subtle nuances on some real amps for example jcm800 has a bright cap embedded into pre-amp gain knob. As you turn it up it slowly takes back the high pass filtering. If you leave the gain at 50%, you get a high-pass filter around 120hz before the preamp stage. So the question is, did they really really try to capture all those nuances? Or just put a generic pre-amp saturation algorithm in front of every amp model and stuck an open source tonestack algorithm and an appropriate IR at the end to make it sound like marshallish?
I agree fully. I actually hate impulse responses. They are so static sounding. I wish there was a better digital technology for speaker simulation. This is why I find the Boss "AIRD" interesting.
Hey Paul , did you change the preamp setting on the patch " Premium Drive" ??? Because this patch uses the X-hi-gain amp which is quite dark compared to the British pream that emulates the Marshall
LOL- I love it. Put a fork in the near $2k QC when it is now being compared to a $500 (lightly used) Boss pedal! The QC was the most overhyped box on the planet. Technically, I would give the edge to the QC and it does sound noticeably better (much more power) but come on now. For most of us, the GT-1000 would work just fine and BY FAR THE BETTER VALUE. When Fractal updates the UI on the FM9- I will buy another one. QC is lacking with effects. QC set a new standard in on unit editing. I might buy a QC as a backup if the price drops below $100 US- LOL...but seriously.
The last note (open E) when first demonstrating the "Marshall Tone" on both units tells me a lot. The Quad sounds more open here but it sounds like it may be down to cabinet/mic choice. The Boss sounds more distant but the way it breaks up sounds really great to me.
It seems like he's demonstrating both with the "stock" tone. But, i guess if adjust the same IR in both both unities, and tweak enough, it'll sound more close. Of course, QC is superior, but, the price range is superior as well. GT1000 does a great job. The effects are great.
Nice comparison. Keep in mind its 2024, technology has come a very long way so all these multi-effects units sound amazing and it really comes down to personal preference.
GT1000 got destroyed by QC in Marshall type sound. I wonder how it would sound with different IR because there are others demos on TH-cam of it, and it doesn't sound this bad. Fender type, both were equally good.
I got both - and i keep the GX-100, the QC has gone. The Boss doesnt get destroyed by the QC at all. The Marshalls sound much tighter and less fizzy on the Boss. When you play in a band, you cut through the mix with the boss.
@@bertolosi i could hear the digital fizz/sizzle in the video on the qc. i dont know why others cant hear it. you would think this wouldnt be a thing in 2022.
My rabbit hole of viewing comparison videos between the QC and others, stops here. And my final word is... In every video that compares the QC to any of its competitors, the QC consistently sounds more like a real amp than anything else out there. As a former Kemper and AxeFX owner, I'm very familiar with the process and the sounds that come with it. The Kemper has always been one of the best modeling/ profilers out there. But the arrival of the QC has raised the bar for realism.
I got rid of my Kemper. It was always missing the feel and the sound. Rig manager was a nightmare. No cell unless you want to pay about $100 for that connection on the rack or toaster. Helix not as good in feel or sound either. Another ui not as good. Feel and sound not as good. Never used Kemper or helix. Someone else will enjoy them. Quad is on another level. Better level.
The clean sound great and very similar on both units with much more bass on the QC and im entirely sure that with just some EQ tweaks they could sound pretty much identical. When it comes to the distortion there is no contest though in this video, the QC sound so much better than the GT-1000, its certainly possible that there is a way to get the GT-1000 to sound close to the QC with different IR´s and EQ etc, who knows, no guarantees for that however. I say this as someone who has used and loved Boss products including modelers for decades but dont own any of these units.
I really thought the QC sounded much better - a bit like a high quality wav file vs a lower quality MP3. Just kinda muffled/blurry sounding. At really high volumes live I think the Quad Cortex would be a lot more lively and cut more. Definitely getting the QC.
Please Paul do the comparison again with the new Boss Mastering FX engaged. Seems like QC uses this kind of fx intergrated in its amp models. Thank you for all your work guys!
Really didn't think the GT-1000 Marshall sound stood up against the QC .. In every other respect I thought it was as good or better, but that Marshall sounded more like a DS-1 into a Roland Cube rather than a Marshall .. Was that using the built in cab on the GTK?
Often can't tell much difference in tests like this but the Boss sounds like you're listening with your fingers in your ears compared to the DSP which is much more definitive.
Dear Paul .Really thank you very much for this video.!!!! Thats a very hot subject, which im sure a lot of people care to hear more of this comparison, so please consider making a QC VS BOSS series of videos, also it would be great to hear the same amps through the same IRs to see how that sounds , or trying to match them to see how close it can get.. Thanks again .You're lovely . Cheers from Crete Island Greece.
The GT 1000 sounds like the treble has a heavy rolloff. So you’re gigging with the Neural and you use the restroom. You notice that the floor is ‘wet’. Then you step on some of the switches. Now you want to change a parameter or two and have to touch those switches then play your guitar. Then your want to do some fingerpicking and you hold the pick momentarily with your teeth. Do you see where I’m going? I don’t care how great it sounds, that’s a deal breaker. How many of you wipe your gear down with Cavi-Wipes?
This video probably saved me some hundreds of dollars, since I Have a Boss Gt-1000 (full size) and was thinking about buying the Quad Cortex. I really like the Gt-1000, and I think it's way too much for an amateur guitarist as myself. Thanks for all the info.
What I'd like to see is a video with the external pedals that you think are the best to complement the Gt-1000. Different effects, like a synth or a certain type of drive or fuzz?
The GT1000 presets are all set to 5 meaning Bass, Mid, Treble, Presence, are all set to 5. Where the quad cortex sounds like it is set for best sound? I take that back he has the gt 1000 bass set to 80? and treble set to 50 this is enough to see that is why the Cortex sounds better
The thing with the QC is that you can't really ignore the capture functionality because even if you don't have amps to capture other people do and they can share what they have captured giving you a far greater arsenal than what is in the box when you get it.
It is a great video and does make the point. How do you like the GT1000 Core vs Tonex Pedal? Also, given that GT doesn't have the profiling option, is there an option for uploading presets from Boss or another site? Or it's pretty much what's in the unit, and that's it.
Through the software on your computer you can copy and paste dozens if not hundreds of presets from Boss engineers and quite a few of their signature artists like Marty Freidman. Nita Strauss has said she pretty much starts with the presets she likes then tweaks them to her taste. Some of the presets available online emulate the tones for many popular songs from Metallica to Deep Purple.
Is it me, or does the Cortex version of the Marshall amp have more default high end than on the Core? It’s likely the cab & speaker emulation settings.
Hi Paul... I just picked up a GT-1000 core last week, and really haven't spent enough time with it yet to form an opinion... but I'm trying to work out a solo for a buddies song ASAP. It looks like there is no noise gate in the GT-1000 ??? Do you know if this is true? Just listening to your video here... I prefer the distorted sounds of the Quad much better. It sounds like you pulled the blanket off of the speaker when comparing the two. I also wanted to say how much I like your videos... well done man! I was watching your video about your new PRS Studio guitar and I became interested in getting one because of that. I couldn't find one on line at the time, this supply chain issue is a night mare, and I eventually became side tracked with a PRS 35th Anniversary Custom 24 With 10 Top in charcoal burst that was pretty awesome although I didn't have quite enough cash for it at the time. A few weeks later... that guitar was gone. I ended up getting a new PRS DW CE24... which is very nice, although I am unable to lower the action down to match that of my Yamaha SBG2000... which just might be a one in a million guitar. I've never picked up another guitar that played as effortlessly as my Yamaha. It's pretty amazing. But no tremolo on the Yamaha... and I bought it 33 years ago. It was time for a new guitar! Rock on bud! (I will never sell the Yamaha though :-) )
Cheers Angel, download the free, Gt1000 patch on our website, that might help. You’ll be able to get the PRS action down. If you not comfortable adjusting the truss Rod, saddle height and the tricky trem, get it to a luthier. Cheers P
i think we are talking taste here, i recall doing a amp workshop (approx 200 years ago) in my studio with 10 different amps and 5 guitarists, the conclusion (everybody agreed) was: one is used to his sound and looks for it on any amp and if he cant find it - he does not like the amp. we called it "trapped" in your sound. in my opinion, regarding the money, the gt wins ,even if i dont like rolands/boss`s proprietary behaviours, BUT one must admit these things are undestructable, and frankly i do not really fiddle around with my sounds once on stage, too i think the touchscreen on the QC could be risky on punk shows (drunk morons front stage). i seriously was thinking of QC as it would be fun and less gearporn on "livingroom gigs" having bass and two gtrs running through one device. but then you have the preset switching latency... and not to forget: thanks for your videos!! ps: with roadie i bring my plexi anyway
The GT1000 Marshall tone sounds like a blanket is over the speaker. I would be curious to know what would happen if you placed a buffered pedal before the GT1000.
They both sound amazing, but it's waaay easier to set a good tone with the QC. I had a GT1000 before and got a QC a few months ago... it's just insane!
Very interesting. IMO, the price of QC doesn't worth it. For the same price you can get a Fractal FM3. Indeed, I'd really appreciate a comparison between GT1000 and FM3...
I've owned a lot of Boss units and I love the flexibility of the unit itself. You can do some amazing things with Boss multi-fx units. That said, Boss still has that blanket-over-the-speaker sound when compared to other units when it comes to distortion sounds. That is also the case here. I don't know the Quad Core unit but to my ears, its seems to have more life than the GT-1000. That is not to say that the Gt-1000 doesn't sound good; it does. I just think the Quad Core sounds a little better.
The Quad Cortex has better sounding lead tones, easier interface, and has a profiler...but I can't justify it at three times the price of the Core which has everything I need...
Dear Paul.....with regards to the GT1000 Core, is it possible to plug a Bluetooth dongle into the GTKC's USB connector & paired it with an iPad & edit the GTKC (using Boss Tone Studio) from the iPad remotely via bluetooth?
What i do miss in this video....To get a real comparison between the 2 units, a real common speakercabinet should be should used, instead of the units with their own soundcolored IR's.
The Quad Cortex is alittle brighter or stronger on the "treble" frequency. I believe, the GT1000 can also adjust (EQ'd) to sound like Quad Cortex. Why do I say that....well, I still using my Boss GT10 in the last 15 years. Lol. I've been able adjust everything to sound like a real amp. I have also bought GT100 and I've returned it. I saw that, my GT100 is no better than my GT10. Then last year, I finally bought Helix (based on everyone's full four STARs on internet reviews), I was so disappointed and I returned it. Now, I went back to my old GT10. So, I believe, if they want to buy less money, the GT1000 should be able do everything. If you have $2000, I would rather buy GT1000 ($650) and save $1,300 to buy other things you want. This my opinion.
The Marshall model sounded weird with the GT-1000. Some thin, weird upper mids and fizzy highs going on that was strange. Can that be dialed out easily?
The latent response when switching patches seems to reveal that the on board conversion of the GT1000 is far more efficient both sides of the converters. No update on the neural is going to ever change that. Driver and converter efficiency are really important, and Boss has nailed it with the GT1000, IMO. The neural may have great conversion and drivers, but if they don't run efficiently both sides of conversion, it's a moot point. Ymmv ✌️ 🎶 🎶
The difference is actually that all blocks are always activated in the background in the Boss even if they are not on and affect the sound at the moment, it also makes it more predictable what the next patch is going to be with the semi fixed chain vs some of the other modelers that are much more flexible. That flexibility also takes time to calculate for the DSP which gives the gap between presets when these more flexible modelers need to calculate and build a whole new chain of effects while Boss switches on and off some blocks that are already active in the background and maybe change effect in the blocks and perhaps move them around a bit. Boss also uses their own custom designed DSP chips unlike any other that i know of which likely further optimizes the function of the GT-1000.
@@Stefan- yea that makes sense. I know [for example] many plugins reserve headroom for features not in use, like a channel strip using only input pre but headroom parked in case eq or comp/gate are engaged. The dialogue time for neural to switch patch or turn a block feature on or off would drive me nutters. It's an odd descrepancy, if in fact that's what it is. I'd be assuming that it is an oversight.
I think it's the blanket of mediocrity that wraps around these units like gt or zoom etc.. Also QC sounds like there's a 70% of raw direct sound blended with a 30% of capture/model of the amp used + effects.
QC better aspect only for the UI, The touch screen and knob in the foot switch is amazing. Personally i wanna try myself, if its can beat my boss ir 200. Since boss ir 200 beat all the digital modeller i have been using such as helix lt, fractal ax8, nux mg30 and mooer ge 200 in format, sound and pick response IMHO. If it cant hold up its time to change pedal board again 😁😁😁
Came here to kill my GAS for the Quad Cortex, but to my ears the quad cortex sounds better / more pleasing through all the examples. Can’t put my finger on it, but I just prefer the Quad Cortex
Hey Boss. Just for grins, where would you put S-Gear in order for these units? Better or worse? No priority, just curious. Thanks for all the great information! Best Regards. I know the platforms are Apples/Oranges..just idly curious :)
Hi Hanover, sgear is great, def the best out of all the plug-ins. I way prefer it to the quad cortex and for that reason I’ve sold my quad cortex. The boss stuff is great. I guess it depends on if you want an external box or happy with the computer.
@@TheStudioRats I bought a used GT-1000 last week based on what you and Johnathan Cordy have been able to get out of it. Loving your presets especially the Ultimate Breakup tone. It's easy to get a P90 spank w/out a P90 guitar. Best Regards.
Ok the QC sounds prolly better with highlighted mids, and generally more present. In other patches the GT sounded better. I wouldn't say the QC is sooo better that will make me sell the boss GT 1000 i have.
I like my GT1000 core. It is far more responsive and "clearer" than my Helix. But hey, I really like my Helix too. I don't think I am missing out on anything by not rushing out and getting a Quad cortex tbh. I had stuff that can capture tones before (like the Mooer preamp live) and though interesting, just much prefer to just download them. There is no environment where I play and people stand there and shout "get a quad cortex, you sound shite" at me. I am not brand loyal or anything, I am just burnt out by the relentless march of this modelling technology, and (even though I love it) am not really bothered in keeping up anymore. If it sounds great it is great. Nuno still uses a boss gt 8 from around 1945.
Thank you for a great comparison. Some months ago I actually investigated which one I should buy. Eventually I ended up buying the QC, and listening to this comparison I thank god for that decision. That Marshall sound on the GT-1000 sounded very poor.
Did you notice the price hike for the QC? What's the deal? 1599usd to 1849usd hurts I was this close on buying now I'm rethinking it and trying to see if the fm3 is worth it because it runs about the same price of the new QC price
@@Mindreeze The world wide price on semiconductors has risen by several 10's of procentage. Therefore their manufacturing cost has gone up, so they had to raise prices. I would definately go for the QC instead of fm3.
Do scenes on the Quad and the dsp it requires to utilize them affect how you can build your patches? So like if you want multiple scenes does it cutoff additional effects blocks or something?
They both sound good to me, as does my Headrush. Maybe I'm just undiscerning, but I find myself caring less and less about new gear. I need to be more creative to progress my sound, not spend more.

AT LAST! A review starting with clean and OD sound nuances, not comparing death, trash, gore and speed metal sounds. Thanks!
Cortex has less delay and more reverb. So it sounds "better" because of that IMO. I say if they are tweaked enough, they sound identical.
July 2022...which one of these is still in his arsenal & why?
I actually preferred thr boss on the fender setting. The qc sounded way better on marshall tones. Considering the price difference the boss holds its own
Yes I do too.
Feel has a lot more to do in how you play than nanometric level fidelity.
Marshall tone on the boss gt-1000 pedal sounds like its got a blanket over it
This is not necessarily a bad thing. For me at least less bright is better.
This is a question of how you set your equalizer. Beside from this: The Marshallsound out of the cortex sounds awesome in this demo
People have mentioned using dummy plugs in the Send/Return and the Sub doesn't get fed back into the unit.See the Parameters Guide
Boss is definitely did their homework though.
nice one cheers Raichoo
Old video - anyway
I‘ve used the QC for about a year replacing a Kemper but a couple of weeks ago I tried again the gt 1000 and I‘ll start to replace the QC with it.
Why? The playing feel and response is my top criteria and Boss beats the competition here - by far in my opinion
That and the x-amps are so much fun (After some Deep dives into EQ and Divider magic)
As much as I Love all 9 of my Boss pedals, the Quad Cortex won hands down here for me.
Disagree the Boss Marshall had character to it the quad was just trying to emulate a marshall that's the difference
@@spada60 that's the beauty of it all. We all hear something different and are entitled to a different view.
@@spada60 My point being, since I already have an NS-2, GE-7, RT-20, TU-12, RV-6, DD-7, CE-5, TR-2 and a BF-2, I just don't see the benefit of me getting a GT-1000.
@@spada60 disagree with you. The quad wins out on all other modelers.
Maybe not.
Thanks for the honest opinion on these two units!
Thanks Paul for this video. I have precisely been torn between these two units at the moment. I love Neural DSP plug-ins however I expected to see more variation in the effects section of the unit.
just ordered the Quad Cortex...I already have a helix. I keep both. One will be for recording and one will be for performing.

Howdy!!
Thanks Paul, great demonstration of the two pedals. You clearly explain the differences of the two units. I couldn't think of a better video ! :-)
Cheers Thierry
Hey Paul , did you change the preamp setting on the patch " Premium Drive" ??? Because this patch uses the X-hi-gain amp which is quite dark compared to the British pream that emulates the Marshall
The price points are totally different!!But the Boss is the boss!
Lmfao .. the Boss sounds like crap … literally sounds like a $200 Boss pedal. QC wipes the floor with that POS Boss
Nope. Try the quad and then come back with your thoughts.
@@bertolosi I bought the quad and I love it. Got rid of Kemper and helix. Not even n in the same league in feel, sound and UI.
@@jhue73 maybe it’s what you’re listening through.
It did sound better.
Yea, I want one too, but still want the gt core for my board
Very well done comparison. Imo Quad had much more highs in the Marshal test. Maybe they could sound more similar with some EQing.
In the beginning the volume is low on the 1000core and the quad sounds like your about to overdrive your recording device.
Often can't tell much difference in tests like this but the Boss sounds like you're listening with your fingers in your ears compared to the DSP which is much more definitive.
Hi Sean, you can get the boss to have more clarity by tweaking but I wanted to show the initial settings.
The Quad Cortex is more than double the price of the GT-1000. They sound almost identical. 🤔
QC sounds more "open" where the boss patch sounds rubbery or somewhat muted.
Dear Paul .Really thank you very much for this video.!!!!
Thats a very hot subject, which im sure a lot of people care to hear more of this comparison,
so please consider making a QC VS BOSS series of videos,
also it would be great to hear the same amps through the same IRs to see how that sounds ,
or trying to match them to see how close it can get..
Thanks again .You're lovely .
Cheers from Crete Island Greece.
Cheers Sifis!
Feel the opposite. Love the quad.
The Neural is a bit louder and has a touch more reverb. The Boss GT a bit drier.
No show ninguém vai notar a diferença!! A questão são os outros músicos.
Should be interesting to hear both trhough the same IR :)
The thing with the QC is that you can't really ignore the capture functionality because even if you don't have amps to capture other people do and they can share what they have captured giving you a far greater arsenal than what is in the box when you get it.
Agreed.
One big consideration: here in Spain the QC is nearly 3 times the price of the Boss.
Man, do a bunch of patches like these ones for the boss gt 1000 core and I will buy them whatever the price will be❤️
Hi robert there are free gt1000 patches on the studio rats website
@@TheStudioRats Just downloaded them, they sound amazing
Great comparison
Qortex sounded much more appealing to me when testing marshall type of sound especially. Boss sounds thinner to me. Thanks for comparison :)
Dokladnie tak to slychac.
I agree, but absolutely not $1,500 more.
@@loveaboveall2382 I totally agree with you
It is a great video and does make the point.
They both sound great. But for the price difference I could buy a really good active speaker. So hard to decide.
Great demo, really clear comparisons
Cheers Buzz.
Is it me, or does the Cortex version of the Marshall amp have more default high end than on the Core? It’s likely the cab & speaker emulation settings.
Would have turned the QC volume down, it is louder than the GT. And since louder sounds better, the comparison is uneven.
Paul .. Try the FM3 !!
Great comparison!!
Cheers P
boss noisegate is mentioned as NS (noise suppressor)
i think we are talking taste here, i recall doing a amp workshop (approx 200 years ago) in my studio with 10 different amps and 5 guitarists, the conclusion (everybody agreed) was:
one is used to his sound and looks for it on any amp and if he cant find it - he does not like the amp. we called it "trapped" in your sound.
in my opinion, regarding the money, the gt wins ,even if i dont like rolands/boss`s proprietary behaviours, BUT one must admit these things are undestructable,
and frankly i do not really fiddle around with my sounds once on stage,
too i think the touchscreen on the QC could be risky on punk shows (drunk morons front stage).
i seriously was thinking of QC as it would be fun and less gearporn on "livingroom gigs" having bass and two gtrs running through one device.
but then you have the preset switching latency...
and not to forget: thanks for your videos!!
ps: with roadie i bring my plexi anyway
Thanks for the comment, and yes completely agree. Enjoy the Plexi gigs.
True and now there is a MKII FM3. Bigger fonts and 10% more DSP. FM9 is the future.
"Good" is relative. Without comparing, there's nothing to compare. They both sound good.
I just think the Quad Core sounds a little better.
very helpful video to understand that gt1000 quality
The Quad Cortex has better sounding lead tones, easier interface, and has a profiler...but I can't justify it at three times the price of the Core which has everything I need...
I can. It’s that good. Feel and sound. The UI. Selling all my other modelers.
Dear Paul.....with regards to the GT1000 Core, is it possible to plug a Bluetooth dongle into the GTKC's USB connector & paired it with an iPad & edit the GTKC (using Boss Tone Studio) from the iPad remotely via bluetooth?
I almost thought you'll play every breath you take
What i do miss in this video....To get a real comparison between the 2 units, a real common speakercabinet should be should used, instead of the units with their own soundcolored IR's.
Great content! Thank you!
Cheers Youp
Neural simulation modern , gt1000 simulation clasic tone
The Helix is great once you get the hang of it. It is fantastic after these updates.I have the GT1000 too.
I’m gonna buy a GT Core anytime soon, and now you got me wondering about the GT10 I left at my dad’s house years ago…hmm
Can you remember which amp model you used for the GT1K Marshall tone?
i perfer my axe fx 3 but damn that QC is starting to get very good. love the slightly brighter bite to it.
The Marshall model sounded weird with the GT-1000. Some thin, weird upper mids and fizzy highs going on that was strange. Can that be dialed out easily?
Seems like the global EQ isn’t set as robust as the QC. Stock sounds without tweaking on either seems not very accurate.
@@gmichaelhall Its pretty much the same problem in Helix like the QC when changing patches because of the greater flexibility from what i understand.
GT sounds like it has a blanket over it
If he used same cab I doubt you could even notice what it was what.
Yep
nope. It's how you EQ your patches and volume level
It’s the best modeler I’ve ever owned re the quad.
Great video and good comparison. Tasty guitar - what kind of strat is it?
Hi Scuba, it’s a Suhr classic s
Thanks for sharing!
The Quad Cortex sounded really good, so much better than the GT-1000 but not able to change patches in the middle of song? Is that really true?
You can change patches in the middle of a song. It’s best to use scene mode.
@@TheStudioRats 👍 Thanks!
I agree stick with your GT 1000
The switching speed is an issue with me for sure.
hi did you connect Quad Cortex to powered monitor or power amp to cab?
Cheers Stuee, yep I agree if you’ve got what you need there’s no point in updating.
If you'd need to keep just one of them (Gt-1000 or HX), which one would you pick?
@@stratjazz1 tu mamá 😂
Does fractal have seamless switching between scenes ?
Between scenes yes, patches no.
I think that only difference between these two is a fact they are dialed differently.
Gt1000 sounds more muffled. Is the volume level equal with the qc?
Disagree the Boss Marshall had character to it the quad was just trying to emulate a marshall that's the difference
