A little late for this comment, but the flash synch M doesn't stand for manual. It is used for flashbulb use and means that the flash is triggered about 10 milliseconds before the shutter opens, to give the bulb a chance to reach full light output. (Flashbulbs work by burning fine magnesium wire in an oxygen atmosphere.) The X position closes the flash contacts to fire the flash unit when the shutter is fully open and is used for electronic flash. If you use electronic flash with the M setting, the short burst of light the flash produces (which only lasts 1/1000 of a second or so) will occur before the shutter opens and you will wonder why the photograph is underexposed. Leave it set on X.
Finally-that makes sense. You never know where the information will come out. Sometimes it's just a comment on TH-cam. I remember same lever on Contax , but i think it was X-V and for another purpose. It was stuck anyway.
I recently purchased this camera and I already managed to make two films. It's amazing, but with a camera that's 56 years old the exposure meter is still working perfectly!!!
Nice video, well produced. A very small point. It's not a "hot shoe" it's an accessory shoe. A hot shoe would trigger a flash mounted there. This model required you to attach a cable to the flash-sync socket on the front.
In the 60's my father and my grandfather were both shooting Argus C3 (my grandfather bought his new in 1951, my father bought his used in 1963) and it amazes me how different and how far advanced the Canonets were in comparison. While ergonomically the later Canonets with the wind lever on top was better, aesthetically the first Canonets were just so clean.
@@OldCameras When did the model QL19 come? I have one of those but it needs a battery and the view finder is cracked I wonder if it can be repaired? Thank you for the video very informative
Love your chanel, I've been collecting (and shooting with) analog camera's for a few years myself now. Only I noticed a few mistakes in your video; you called the accessory shoe a hot shoe, it's not. A hot shoe has electrical contacts in the accessory shoe for igniting (one contact) or multiple contact when the camera is also capable of adjusting the flash. Without contacts it's called a cold shoe. Also the X-M switch has nothing to do with Manual. It's for the flash synchronisation, M is for flash bulbs, X is for electronic flash. A flash bulb takes longer to ignite than an electronic flash, so flash bulbs are ignited earlier than electronic flashes. An electronic flash in M mode would give an under exposed picture, it will flash when the shutter is beginning to open, not when the shutter is full open. Keep up the good work, I like your video's.
Ah! Thanks! I've become and just call all accessory shoes 'hot'. I will make an effort to distinguish between them in the future. Thinking of it, its a BIG difference. I might go back and annotate the videos too. Thanks. I have to admit, I don't know too much about flash. Some of the information I know about flash and these cameras is from the manuals written for 1970's pros. Thanks for the comment, I really appreciate it.
There is a ql17 that has been for sale locally for about a year. I was very interested until I found my M5. If you still want one then I'm sure it is still for sale.
I got the Canonet 28 for Christmas this past year. Great little camera. I've gotten some really nice photos from it. I'm not sure how I'd like the original. Having everything but the shutter button on the bottom seems a bit awkward.
Yes it is awkward. I didn't like that much. I know some people actually like it like that but for me, I don't like to think too much about what my fingers are doing. It's like driving a new car with the break and accelerator swapped around :)
Thanks for the video. Great Explanation. I have just got one camera like this one and I am not sure if it does not have some problem. After adjusting the ASA if I move the shutter speed dial, the ASA lever moves also changing his position and ASA value. Also I don't know how to proceed with the drawings down: Sunny cloudy... Thanks again and greetings from Spain.
Interesting, so they updated it without changing the name or overall appearance. That explains why the Canon website describes these as having a highest ASA (ISO) value of just 200 (not 400) and a Copal SLV shutter (not SV). Mind you, the same website contradicts itself with two different maximum aperture settings, so maybe they just don't know what they are talking about!
My first camera :) I still own it. I have a curious story about this model. My father was aboard a liner that was carrying Portuguese troops to Mozambique in 1961 and they stopped in Beira Port. A Japanese cargo ship was there too, doing maintenance before proceeding to Europe, and my father bought the camera to a Japanese sailor. Maybe one of the first ones to be bought by an European, even before they were sold in Europe?
Yes, it does. The selenium meter is functional and the blades of the shutter never stucked in all this years. I have also the flash unit that came with the camera (Canon Flash Unit J-3).
Hi thanks. I will one day. I'm still going through the collection I own at the moment. When I run out, or if I suddenly acquire one of those, I'll give them a test. They're both quite expensive right now though as they're so well known (are good) I've done some less expensive ones though if you're interested ; Olympus AF-10 for example.
Old Cameras The Olympus mju series are probably my favourite 'modern' p&s cameras, I had, for years, a mju2 which was really slick in operation and having regretted selling it many years back because my major gripe was not being able to manually set iso for bulk loaded film I recently picked up a mju zoom 105 which I intend to review soon after running a roll of film through and processing it. So far, it's a bit slower and more clunky sounding than my old mju2 was but at a bargain car boot price and looking like it's worked hard I'll accept that. If you can pick one up do so, honestly the 'original' none zoom is overrated and overpriced on ebay and such but the later zooms are more versatile and typically cheaper online too. Great channel btw, I do enjoy your reviews.
You're right. Someone pointed it out to me a while ago. I'm used to saying 'hotshoe' all the time. I know say 'accessory shoe' these days to cover both. I should probably be more specific though because it actually matters if the shoe is hot or not :) Thanks.
Ya... the original Canonet .. like u said.. the one thing i dont' like is the film advance is at the bottom... ... but.. ya.. QL17!.. GET ONE!.. there are still quite a bit of good copy on ebay
hahaha. It's quite easy actually. If you can use your DSLR in manual mode or shutter-priority mode, then you can probably use this camera easily. Just get some film and give it a go :)
I know this was posted a while ago, but I just got my Canonet today and this was really helpful! Thank you 🙏🏼

Its amazing isn't it? They're great little things.
Can I use 35mm for
This?
Thanks for the story as well as the review. It's always fun watching Old Cameras.
:) Thanks. We need to do some kind of collab one day :)
Absolutely! How about the same camera from each side of the world?
oly 35mm Sounds awesome! :)
Tell you what, maybe this canonet would have been perfect for that. Perhaps I'd prefer using it upside-down haha.

Really informative and not too long. Just got one and couldn't work out how to use it. Thanks
+Dominic neeld you're welcome. Thanks for watching ✌🏿
I'm late. how do you remove the film, is it towards the R or not? I'm confused.
you said put it to R but in the video it's not toward the R

Good break Down of the camera. When are you going to talk about the ql 17 and compare the two?
Thanks. Oh, I need to find an QL17 at a reasonable price first. They're so 'hot' at the moment.
+Old Cameras I know, I bought one months ago for $35 but turned out it needs repair.
This is the second version of the original canon canonet.
the first version does not have a lock "B". and ISO values are at the top.

How to change the battery in this camera? 😮
Hi, I brought this camera today. what type of film roll do you recommend to use with this camera
Superb review, thanx for the tips !
Thanks for watching
It seems so weird that cameras didn't take batteries back in the day.
Yeah. They had to achieve everything through gears and springs. .. and horses :)
lol
i had that camera too. I really like canonet series :3
They look good for sure.

Wow! That's an amazing story. Well it must have some serious sentimental value for you then. Does it still work?
Yes, it does. The selenium meter is functional and the blades of the shutter never stucked in all this years. I have also the flash unit that came with the camera (Canon Flash Unit J-3).
Wow. That's rare to find them with the flash unit. You should have that on a nice display shelf somewhere. That's a bit of history you've got there :)
Thank you, Ade! Old Cameras
How do you use the lightmeters in these things? Or do they have one?
Great video thanks!
The M and X lever is for what? Turning on the flash?
I have the model QL19
Do they still sell batteries for these cameras? Anyone know?
Thank you
Considered doing some point and shoots like the Olympus Mju series or contax T2?

I love your voice!! You sound so much like LeeToTheVI!!
Hahaha. I doubt that very much. He's got way more rhythm in his voice than mine, but thanks, I'll take it. :)

why you make this video in black and white ?
Thanks for this informative video! I have one in my collection and have been itching to burn some film with it.
Thanks for watching. Have fun shooting the little beauty :)
Don't mean to be annoying but that's technically not a hot show but a cold shoe
