How Farms Work by Ryan Kuster is a TH-cam channel based in rural Potosi, Wisconsin. Our mission is to teach those who didn't grow up on a farm what the farming life is like. These videos show the Kuster family working together raising cattle and crops. We believe everyone who wants to know more about farming should be able to share the farming experience with us and we look to educate the world on many essential agriculture topics.
How Farms Work takes place on ~1,100 acres with around 75-200 cattle at any given time. Four John Deere tractors are currently used on the farm, which are a 4020, 4640, 7600, and 8235R.

For long term storage, maybe throw a tarpaulin over the expensive tarp, just a thought. Nice video!
Perhaps keep a battery maintainer on for long term non-use.
Rocket had no issue with you backing the truck into the shed. Quite liking the warm spot he made for himself more than being frightened over the big truck coming at him.

Something to think about, you may want to install a Davco fuel processor in place of your primary filter, and run engine coolant to it. Really helps with the Cummins engines in cold weather..........
So glad I found your channel a few months ago! Alot of work goes into farming. Was going to ask how much corn goes into one trailer, but you answered it. Great channel and nice work.
I leave my tarp open in winter. Heavy snow can wreck the tarp. Snow an rain won't hurt aluminum trailer. Enjoy your videos. Stay safe.

Next time run to Menard's and get you a stove pipe that will fit over your rocket heater, and an elbow... run it up under the trap, with the elbow pointing up, and close the tarp. The heater will blow hot air into the trailer and fill the bunkers with hot air, melting off the snow and ice. Later! OL J R :)

If you hang a tarp over the hood and stick the salander in back by the fuel tanks for about an hour she will start right up. I've seen it done in some really cold situations. If you cover the fuel tanks also it will help with gelling.
Gotta love trying to start a cummins In the cold. If it’s not plugged in over night you’re not gonna go anywhere lol. Ideally that heated shop that everyone dreams about would be nice!

I know you'll see the benefit of having a semi but now with the new combine it would be a great benefit with time if you guys got another truck and trailer for harvest times

Then who drives it?? Unless he can get Hannah running cart most of the time, or his Mom. Dad works a full time job IIRC so that means he's not available as much as he'd prefer, either, even taking vacation days or whatever. At some point you run out of manpower.
Every situation is different, and with the bigger newer combine yeah you get done faster and you're sitting longer waiting on a truck. Same thing with too small a cart as well-- you fill the cart and combine and if it's not enough to fill the truck so he can turn and burn, well, there's inefficiency there. Best possible situation is where everything is balanced-- when I was driving the semi and running the auger cart for my BIL, and he was running the Deere 9600 combine with an 8 row head, I could take off with the truck make the 5-6 mile run into town to the elevator, which usually wasn't backed up sometimes no wait at all, or a very short one, weigh in, dump, weigh out, grab the tickets, and haul it back out to the farm, and pull up basically either right as he was full to the brim with the cart full to the brim, or he'd just filled the combine to the brim and had been sitting usually less than 5 minutes. Park the semi, he'd whip in with the combine and dump on the truck, I'd get in the cart and pull around behind him, usually about the time he was done, pull up and dump the cart on the truck and empty it out, which took about five minutes, by which time he was already back in the field and had most of a hopper of corn on the combine-- chase him down the field, grab a load on the go, double back to the truck and throw the corn on the truck, then stage the cart next to where he was combining, park and hop down, make my way to the truck and roll the tarp, hop in, fire up, and haul @ss for town again. Wash rinse repeat all day. Longest I think he sat was 15 minutes while I was stuck behind two trucks on the scale and unloading, and a couple times I got back JUST as he was filling up the combine after filling the cart, so he wasn't sitting AT ALL. THAT is how you get maximum efficiency out of ALL your equipment-- combine, cart, and truck working hand-in-glove. BUT when you're hauling 30+ miles or have a big combine and one truck, well, not so much.
They were hiring ALL the trucking up til a few years ago- not the worst thing in the world to call a trucker to come help out and pay hauling on every other load when they need the surge capacity. Yeah it costs, but cheaper than a second semi, and finding someone to drive it anyway. OR you just eat the inefficiency and just sit for long periods between truckloads. Just how it works sometimes. OL J R :)

$1600 would get you an auto inflation system for the semi-tractor drives (you could also do the trailer) and then you'd just have to keep an eye on the steers.

Being a x farmer/ hiredman working outside in the winter nothing would go right and things would take longer than normal especially if it snowed and then you would have to move it and pile it up so you could get around with truck and trailer.
Spit on the glad hand rubbers before you connect them. They will go on much easier and it eliminates the chance of dislodging the rubbers.

Hmm heated shop, truck and skid steer wash with recycle ♻️ Susan for warm months. Add to list. Cool to see the 🚂 railcars and conductor riding the move. Know the horn sounds three short when standing back. Two short answer command or forward. Two longs one short then one long a 14l for crossings. One long blast everything must stop. Used in a yard or interlocking. 14l used at any crossing or approaching any worker/Trespasser or contractor (You). 🙂 Be safe.
It seems that unloading is much faster than loading with the auger at the grain bin.
Dogs and Swiss rolls are the best.

U might want to put antijell in your fuel tanks even if you don't run the truck regularly
Ryan do you run a little blended fuel in the winter in your truck, we always put a little bit of number 1 in and let it mix cuz we didn't have heated tanks.

Ryan have you guys thought about extending the loading pad to have a 2nd approach so you can just pull through?
Have considered something like that. Even looping back through where the corn crib is. I could see us replacing that with a load out for a future grain leg setup
Ryan hi nice videos farming from 1960s seems to have changed a lot in 60s we had a hay field with hay 7’ high almost impossible to cut so thick had that for minimum 60 years now you have hay 2’ high and need to rotate why what has changed if you could explain in a video i watch every one

Everything is harder farming in a WI winter. Thank you for sharing the year round aspects of farming. If everyone were required to spend a week on a farm, maybe people would be willing to pay a bit more for food and energy IF it were going to the farmer. It usually never does.
What's the fine for being slightly overloaded?
Hi Ryan, been watching and learning about North America Ranching and Farming. Your channel is one I watch, we are principally Ranches but also do a fair bit of farming in Australia. Snow might be nice to sky on but watching the trouble it causes with starting machinery etc not for me. Can you help me out, you said the last load weighed 79700 lbs, was that total weight or the grain weight. Converting corn from lbs to bushles is it 56lbs/bu? Enjoy the channel. From Down Under.
That's the max weight that we can haul including the truck. The truck is 24,500 lbs and the rest is all corn. Test weight on the corn can vary but most often 56/lbs/bushel is used.

Would it be prohibitive to put any of the forms of block/systems heater to use for this type of occasion? Maybe the engine blanket type combined with a trickle charger, both of which can be repurposed after Red leaves. I hate to laugh at your pain, but when you wrote "Maybe this fog machine will help" I was rolling out of my chair.
