  • You may have heard some puppy training myths that talk about playing tug, and how it can make a puppy aggressive or possessive. The truth is that if you're trying to stop puppy biting, playing tug with your puppy is actually a great opportunity for your puppy to work on some leadership exercises. This simple game is a good way to tire your puppy out in the process as well. In this puppy biting training tutorial, Kayl will show you how to play the game with your puppy, and how you can actually teach them to be mindful of where they're biting!

I’m curious about the difference between ‘out’ and ‘drop it’. My puppy is mouthy and grabby so when he’s got something - leave it hasn’t worked lol- we say drop it

For my training, I'm training my pup Drop it when we're playing fetch, she has to sit & drop it (ball) before I'll pick it up because she would bite my hand.
For the Leave It command, I'm teaching for when my pup grabs rocks, walnuts, sticks or is checking something out that I don't want her to.

Hi there, lolimi! This IS a puppy who hasn't had any training for nipping and biting! We have worked with this pup on a couple of videos previously, but we haven't ever addressed her biting previously. Her owner has mentioned to us a couple of times that she's struggling with nipping. You can see how quickly good information helps the dog to make better choices! The trick is setting the puppy up to be successful, and making sure you're VERY clear about your expectations. An even more important factor is that we have NEVER let the puppy be wrong over and over, so she is much more likely to make better choices with us!

I love watching your videos and putting your techniques into practice, but it does appear that the puppies you use are already trained. As with a previous comment my puppy definitely does not sit nicely as I dangle the toy in front of him, he just jumps up for it and if he can’t get that he goes for my toes! I would love to see a video with a puppy who does not play ball as it were to see how to control his behaviour when he constantly tries to nip.

My Cavapoo, Avery is so lunge/biting. I tried this tug game that Kayl showed at minute marker 8.30. Avery bit tugged for a few seconds but quickly bit my arm as she lunged to bit the end of the tug rope. My solution was to shorten the tug rope to only a couple of feet & I tried the game several times. But Avery didn't seem to get the idea of keeping her teeth off my hands, I ended the game to get band-aids. Then did the easy Sits, Downs, Wait, Roll-over, Get on Your Bed & heeling (for wins before potty break & crate time).
    I'll try it again tomorrow.

Hoping you can help; I have a 14 week old puppy very much going through puppy biting. What I can’t figure out is why my puppy bites my husband but doesn’t bite me… ever. I can’t see what we’re doing differently. He doesn’t growl when he bites, it’s seems like tail wagging excitement. Sometimes the puppy seems to get fixated and will bite repeatedly. My thoughts have been is it attention seeking behaviour. Watching your video I think my husband is getting the toy too soon to distract biting and the pup may have learnt to bite to get the play. The only thing I can think is when he’s excited with me heading toward nippy I will ask him to sit and won’t continue to play till he does that - my thought was that I’m teaching emotional regulation. May not be very clear but wondered If you could fathom why he bites my husband and not me. Thanks, writing from the UK also. Love your videos

I'm not a dog trainer but I've always owned dogs and the fact that your puppy doesn't nip you but does to your husband is normal. My 1yr old female stopped nipping me almost immediately, I had to teach everyone how I was stopping it and I made it clear to her, that it was unacceptable by removing her immediately when she did it. That worked the quickest.
I had a long line leash in the house, in an area that she could still see us. The second she put her mouth on someone, I had them say "OUCH" and then I immediately put her on the long line. She learned quickly if she wants to be with everyone, she can't nip.

  • @stasn3715

actually instead of let the dog wait I would ask her to wait as a command. This way a dog learns that he needs to sit down (to calm down) then he needs to wait to do anything. And I would keep moving a toy around but the dog should wait. And only on my command - yes or whatever you use to release the dog grabs the toy. I am doing that with my 3-month-old Doberman and he doing everything on my command.

We’ve stopped for the time being even trying to tug or have much interaction with toys other than throwing them for her to fetch because she gets overexcited and jumps for the toy and ends up snagging our hands with her teeth. I recommend beef liver- you can get Crump’s mini trainer treats or you can get large chunks and break it off into very small nail sized bits. Venison or bison dried in flat pieces are also easy to break off into suitable sizes! I struggled in the beginning with my puppy, so it absolutely works!

    • @mciburton

Puperoni (sp?) sells bitesize puppy treats. They smell just like beef jerky (which is probably what they are) and you can cut each piece into smaller pieces. I put these into a plastic bag and take them with me when I walk my puppy. We have a walk and a few minutes of training, and then a walk. If he's having a hard time, I always end the training with something he can do well. In your supermarket's pet aisle or Petsmart or Petco, there should be jerky treats: Newman's Own is good, though a little pricey. There's also a brand in my store called Abound. They are soft treats which break easily into small pieces, about the size of a pea. My pup loves these both!

gotta have some patience and consistency, 7 wks is very young to be expecting very much of anything from your pup. you'll see a big difference during 9-12 weeks and then the behavior should be resolved for the most part by 16 wks. show them what they can chew and bite on when they are playing with something they shouldn't and anytime they bite the hands stop the play and feel free to take a break before trying to play again

Make like a doggy playmate would and yelp as though he Hurt you, when he registers that say a firm" no" or "enough". Then with purpose, frog march into puppy time out. I did one minute per month of his age. A Safe place but away from the activities of the house , somewhere you can always use for his time out, make sure its boring there ,don't talk to him, pretend you are super disgusted (no eye contact and a huge sigh works with my boy) . Hahaha 😂.. stay calm and turn your back on him. Then after time out is finished, release him with a word like "free" or something that works for him..but no more game until next time. Hope this helps I remember what is was like best of luck ☺️

Then Offer open palm when she's calm and close it if she goes for it without your permission . repeat a few times a day until she gets it. If she's too hyper treats go away altogether and you withdraw your energy. stand still and wait calmly. This works for me but be patient it takes time.good luck 😊oh and don't always treat from the same pocket, if at home place treats around the house and tell pup to wait whilst you go for it or have them in different pockets when out and about , shirt, trouser coat, pouch, keep the little sucker guessing 😊

I have started carrying the treats in a little pouch in my pocket all time so she doesn’t see me get the treats out. That helps. I also worked with her on the leave it command which has helped as well because if she is going for the treats I tell her to ‘leave it’ but honestly what has helped the most is if she continually begins having this problem I stop the training session, etc and place her in her exercise pen for a few minutes, not really as a time out but more so to give her a chance to calm down and then I restart once she is calm.

I have a 10 week husky puppy and he keeps nipping at arms and legs, tugging on clothes. Tryna teach him not to and I think it’s gonna work. But my mom thinks he’s aggressive and tries to convince me to get rid of him and get a different puppy. I tried explaining thousand times that nipping is normal for puppies and they will eventually stop if you teach them well but she just won’t listen🤦‍♀️ idk how i can get her to listen to me. Every day she’s nagging about it.
My biggest mistake is to get a puppy when still living in the same house as her. But I asked for her permission. SHE AGREED. But now she’s complaining all day.

I have a 12 week old husky puppy and he went through a huge “bite mum” stage but we found it was because he was too tired and over stimulated. Since we slowed things down and now he is able to be walked (he’s had his vaccines now) we have found he is a lot calmer. We train him at every meal time. He also has lick mats and Kong toys frozen and filled with puppy food, yogurt, cheese and chicken or baby food everyday.
He wasn’t interested in chew toys but we got the soft flexible puppy nylabone and he has begun to enjoy chewing that over my arm. Good luck. Husky’s are strong willed and like to be leader of the pack. You have to teach them who is boss ASAP.

@@kayleacary4704 my husky isn’t that food motivated, nor is he too interested in his chew toys. When I tell him to come he only comes when he wants to.
Today I gave him a bath and he started going crazy trying to get out of the tub. Tried using treats but he just wasn’t interested.
Gave him a frozen kong toy and he just smelled it and wasn’t interested😂
Any suggestions on how I should correct him when he’s nipping and jumping at people? I tried the turn away and ignore method. Sometimes works sometimes doesn’t. And when he’s chewing on my shoe laces and I ignore him, he just continues. The problem is that people in my house think shooing him away is better

I have a small lead on him in the house and just pull him back from anything he shouldn’t be doing. I then distract him with something he can have.
Does your puppy like yogurt? I dipped his chew toy in yogurt and let him lick it. It took a while but he got it. You could try using an old chew toy that another dog has chewed. The old teeth marks will hold more tasty filling.
Try giving the puppy’s meal in a Kong so it gets him interested in the chew toy. If puppy is hungry then he will want to get to the food. I used loose kibble in the Kong at first so he could knock it about and get it easily. After he was excited over seeing the Kong and found it too easy to get the food, I then started to mix in mashed carrot and yogurt so it would freeze hard and give him more of a challenge.
Puppy biting is a BIG pain though. My hand is pretty sore but we are getting there. Good luck 😃

@@kayleacary4704 thanks a lot! I haven’t tried yogurt yet. I have tried peanut butter which is popular among dogs but he’s not interested. He had a lick of it and that’s it.
For the Kong, maybe I made it too difficult for him to get the food since I froze it. I’ll make it easier next time

Account One We don’t have a husky but we have a strong willed Corgi mix puppy who has a huge nipping and jumping problem. Couple of things, first off I’ve learned from reading others experiences is this isn’t like sit or stay, it often takes a lot of repetition and the success is seen over weeks and sometimes months, not days. You have to stay consistent with whatever you choose to do, sometimes repeat it many, many times a day for weeks until finally it begins to click with them. Now, everyone has their own way of doing things so this may or may not be what you choose to do but for jumping our trainer told us to tell our puppy “off”, then have her sit, then reward if she does so. If she doesn’t and we have to repeat this more than twice in a row than we are to click her leash to her and keep her right by our side for 5 minutes. She said the thought process is that she will eventually see that jumping loses her freedom. As for biting, we’ve tried to yelp like a puppy, ignore her, teach her to be more gentle, redirect, and none of it has really worked. What we have now decided is to yelp and tell her “no bite”, if she does it again tell her “gentle” (which we’ve taught her means lick instead) and if she does it a third time immediately, but calmly, removing her and placing her in her exercise pen for a few minutes . We are hoping this will teach her that biting means playtime ends. Also it is very true that puppies who are overtired are often more nippy. Puppies need a lot of sleep, around 18 hours a day but just like babies they don’t recognize they need to calm themselves and sleep. If you haven’t tried enforced naps in a crate or exercise pen I highly recommend it. Ours is almost 5 months old and after 2-3 hours awake gets put in her crate to take a 1-2 hr nap which usually equals her napping for around 6 hours a day in addition to sleeping 10-12 hours at night. Good luck, having a puppy is hard!

@@rickyazzolino4499 This puppy was used in another video regarding door dashing, so the puppy has transferred that skill. It shows you that all the exercises are connected! This puppy had not seen this exercise prior to filming. We try to get the most natural response from the puppy. With clear information and good timing from the trainer, it doesn't take long for the puppy to make great choices. This style of dog training works quickly.
