    My dog trainer said to put 50 pieces of food in a bowl at the beginning of the day, then take 10 pieces at a time and work on training. This adds up to 5 times a day in short bursts. It really helped me stay accountable and kept things short and sweet. Nan and I are working and getting better and better!

      This doesn't work so well once you're feeding real food and not the dry pellets that the marketing department of the food manufacturers have convinced you is dog food.

    Dog Trainer here with more than 20 years of experience: The power of your voice only works if you didn't "burn" your voice already. If you talk constantly with your dog, your voice becomes the infamous dripping faucet which you don't hear anymore after a few days.
    Your dog doesn't need to hear where you're going when you leave the house or how traffic was when you come home. A simple "wait" and "hi buddy" does the job.
    Once you stop constantly talking to your dog the entire day, your voice becomes very powerful. Imagine your dog's reaction hearing a "hey!" after four hours of silence.

    People are amazed with how obedient, chill, and SMART my 4 month old French Bulldog is. My secret: I watch McCann Dog Training videos and and don’t do any guesswork! I’m so thankful for this channel. I wish I had these videos 16 years ago for my late doggy. I could have done better. How much more wonderful would his life have been if he was trained right, emotionally balanced and obedient?! McCann come to San Diego for a seminar! Me and my puppy Max will be there!!!

    Working on handler excited and fun place for dog to be can also be exhausting on handler and dogs can sense emotions well. Short, focused sessions seem logical there too.

    Can you guys do a series on what training can look like for dogs with anxiety or dogs who are naturally nervous? Y’all have one video on it but many of the videos y’all produce are for dogs who are friendly and love people and other dogs. This makes it hard for those of us with anxious dogs because we have to navigate through the anxiety first before who start applying the training tips you guys give.

    • @McCannDogs
      @McCannDogs  2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Hi there, daniela! We intentionally avoid publishing content that could be seen as prescriptive for worried or anxious dogs here on TH-cam. With having more than 100,000 dogs come through our training facility, we've learned a few things. One really important lesson is that there are a few training challenges that need to be addressed specifically for each dog. The likelihood that a dog owner could make things worse by taking "general information" and applying it to their dog is a very real possibility. We do plan on making lots of videos with information that is safe to use for any dog, but when it comes to addressing these kinds of issues, it's best to get info that's created just for you. Reach out to us at onlinetraining@mccanndogs.com and see if there is a training option that's right for you and your dog.

    I train gun dogs in the uk & game play is far more effective than food for most dogs I train. I do use food occasionally but to build drive & desire into gun dogs tennis balls & a racquet far out ways food by a HUGE amount. Dummy work also while building the foundation into the dog.

    My dog is so short that when I am walking and trying to give him a treat he starts jumping up to reach my hand. He's a toy Aussie and so so smart but very distracted by everything when we walk. • @LittleMissJen999

    My dog has a lot of focus indoors and follows us everywhere we go but as soon as we step outside he's a completely different dog. He's always pulled on the lead and doesn't show any interest in food or toys when outside. He just get so overwhelmed and excited outdoors that he ignores us. He's gotten only slightly better recently on certain areas of the walk but he still pulls like crazy and doesn't listen. I feel like I've tried everything except professional one to one help. I'd love to be able to take my dog for lovely long walks but he pulls so much that it makes my back ache. Equally when he's off the lead he runs too far away and I worry about his safety. I tried training him on a longline lead and ended up with a rope burn around my leg. I'll try these techniques but it looks like I'm going to have to get help from a trainer. It needs to be sorted.

    Hi guys! Thank you for all the amazing content you post, I really appreciate it. I am finding it hard to apply your tips though as our 9 months old Podenco Curry is an adopted rescue. He has not received any training before so he's not used to it and he don't seem to get the concept fully. Luring, however slow and tasty, doesn't work too well, when at some point he just stops and looks at the treat confused. He's been with us for a month and we have to take him out for walks on the streets as we live in the city. It's packed with distractions so he pulls a lot. There are parks as well but they're even worse in terms of distractions. What can I do to ensure the best experience for Curry and ourselves? I hope to hear from you 😊 Best regards, Niki

    • @KannaIru
      @KannaIru 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Niki, I hope Curry has been well. They have a video for adopted older dogs on this channel, you can search “McCann training adult dogs”. As for the luring, if Curry is still having trouble, it’s because when you move it away he thinks that means he’s not supposed to take it. Try baby steps. Put a treat right up to him and say “get it (etc)” as you move it, and as long as he follows even a little, mark that “YES” (or clicker) and reward!! If you have taken the time to load value on the marker word, he will learn what you want. It might take a while, but I’m sure he’s a good boy.

    Love the advice, but a question relating to the extra tip
    My dog isn't interested in Toys or Food when outside (Lurcher with a very high prey drive). Even indoors, at home He isn't the fussiest with food, I have watched him savour a cooked steak (never seen a dog take longer than 5 seconds to eat a steak before, he takes more than 5 minutes) and really not at all with toys ever. My voice and a whistle are the only things that have a chance (whistle more so) but it isn't 100% as I don't know how to reward him when he does what I want/comes back.
    His only interests are running, chasing and very rough play (like he is trying to pull down a deer, which makes sense considering what is in him)

    I am struggling with training an almost one-year-old large mixed breed dog who is in the middle of recovering from the first of two needed knee surgeries. As a younger dog, he was very good at sitting and staying, but with the knee problems he could no longer sit and the surgeries have complicated everything. He soooo wants to be active, but he has to be restrained. I guess I feel like the knees and surgeries have made us go backwards in terms of training.

    I really like this motion idea. Gary is a 12 month old (in 3 weeks) JRT/Blue heeler. He is stubborn OMG! He doesn’t really follow commands; just the random things I say like “wait hold on” *me looking for a poop bag in the “walk bag.” I feel like he listens to short sentences. I’m probably wrong, but it’s weird. I’m going to try the motion idea bc his commands except for “watch out” or “be careful”, are out the door

    We did all that with toys and running, but we haven't been able to teaching our 7 month old not to chase the cat. She doesn't hurt the cat, but has had a few scratches.

    My border collie (3 years old) is bezerk about the beach. She is good normally but as we get closer to the beach, she begins to shake and whine. I get her from the car to the beach with a harness but it seems over before we start. Any help?

    When going outside and trying to redirect with treats, If he sees the dog park or in the dirt park the treats don’t work with redirecting. What should I do?

    It’s sad because all these things I keep seeing are amazing but my 10 week old pup just does not care to be on the leash, he plants on all 4s and will not move no matter how much excitement you show him to get motivated to move.

    • @KathgoKat
      @KathgoKat ปีที่แล้ว +3

      You need to be positive...you need to entice him...with high value food like chivken...or by clapping your hands and acting goofy...You can't give up....you pull a tiny bit on the leash and release if he makes one step reward him......or carry him and walk a few yards away...set him down.. so he will want to run back to the house...then as soon as he starts to move....you clap and reward him. Tell him he's a Good Boy..
      . training is repetitive everyday for even for just 3.. 5 minute sessions.. everyday tho......its up to you to not give up..Keep watching all the McCann videos you can...guaranteed you'll succeed!!! Have fun too !!! You can do it !!!

    Every time I try and redirect my puppy on is leash, he does not look up at me and come back to me. He growls and then lays down and will not move. Repeat, WILL NOT MOVE. The black dog in this video is alreay trained by comparison to my dog.

    I only have one location... my yard, it doesn't have a fence because we can't afford one, there are stray dogs everywhere that'll be right down the street or in our yard tying to play with opal (my doggo) but I'm trying to train her and she gets distracted by them. If i take her to the back we have a lake she can get distracted with, and birds, and winds through the trees, sicks, leaves ,plants, im in the worst possible position to be training my dog but ill try my best again ._.

    Would you do a video on puppy training with kids in the house? I have a burning question. Puppy arrives in a week, we have picked out a name, but now I am telling the kids they can't use the name over and over. I am wondering if it would be a good idea to give the puppy a secondary name, one that the kids can use over and over. Different to the name I want to use (because I aiming for a properly trained dog that I can enjoy running with).

    • @karterbentley85
      @karterbentley85 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You could always just have the kid call the puppy “puppy” 😊 dogs can learn to answer to multiple names as long as you reinforce the name you want them to respond to. My dog’s name is Nash and he answers to Nash and Bubba. So your kids could always call the puppy anything but whichever name you want the puppy to respond to, you should always reinforce

    I got spoiled w my Chihuahua who was hyper-focused on me and super eager to please. He was a breeze to train. Now I am trying to train a hyperactive German shepherd with serious focus issues and it's so frustrating. Nothing seems to work on her the improve focus. She learns tricks quickly but everything goes out the window the second she gets distracted. But she won't even focus at home. I need help. :(

    I need help!!! My dog is almost 2 years old and typically a good behaving dog except when we're out for a walk. She barks aggressively and lunges at trucks or any loud vehicles that drive by. My neighbourhood doesn't have many sidewalks so I'm having to walk on the road which is frightening. Lately she's also been barking at other dogs and lunging at people. I've tried several trainers and it's getting expensive. I've been told to distract her with treats but I can't go on walking for 30-40 minutes constantly giving her treats. I need help!

    I am trying my best with my 7months old malador puppy and I feel every week she is doing worse. We even went to dog school where she was okay but now she doesn't listen to anything I say.
    Is this the teenage phase or she just doesn't feel like obeying anymore.
