People think I'm nuts but I know my motorbike has a machine spirit, she has kept me up when I should of died many a time, she's a good girl & can have all the clean oil she likes.
Agreed. I feel like it's one of the things that usually gets wrapped up in overplaying how miserable/grimderp things get. When it gets mentioned at all, The Machine Spirit is almost exclusively used to show that your tank will disobey you when you need it, that you need a nutjob on staff at all times to properly consecrate the oil, and that nobody knows how anything works. There's so much more to it, both in the big picture, and individual stories that just gets glossed over.
In the Grim darkness of the far future, you will feel feels like you've never feeled over an epic tank... Shut up, there's a lot of dust in the air, dammit.
Yep when you go thrue hell and back with your tank and it saves you life so many times its no shame to love it. I really have to give it to you Baldemort that storytelling was great.
That opening said more about warriors, than it said about a machine, when you are in lands where friendship will only cause grief and weaken your soul, when your brothers fall..we are still human under all the grime and death, we still need to care, and be cared for.. I also spoke to my battle wagon when i served, it made sense, it still does..
Damn. It's funny that this is the one time I've heard a story about Space Marines where I felt that they actually had a link to humanity. No superhuman tale of how amazing the marines are, it's a single display that deep down even the transhuman demigods are still human.
I completely relate to this video. During my Army career I was a vehicle commander for a Stryker ICV, and my driver and I would talk to it as if it had a machine spirit. I loved that Stryker, and when I became a squad leader I was lucky enough to keep it. For 6 years I spent nearly every day with her, and she kept me safe through two tours in Iraq. I'm getting choked up just thinking about her. Thank you Baldermort, this brought back a lot of great memories.
That opening was one of the most heart wrenching things I've listened to. I really had to choke back tears, and if it lasted any longer I would have sobbed like that poor Marine. Bravo Baldermort...Bravo.
The marine's relationship with the Land Raider feels very authentically human, given the profound sentimentality toward their horses (and other animals) which real soldiers have often historically displayed. It does perhaps feel a little TOO human for an emotionally stunted post-human astartes, but I enjoyed it too much to care.
In my defence - he’s a blood angel. They appreciate beauty and tragedy like few others. That is my only defence. But marines are still human. Boil it all away and they should have layers other than revulsion and aggression. Camaraderie of Astartes is attested. That with his steed I felt no less important. Plus he’s mourning Baal and transferring a bit. :). thank for listening brother. ;).

Most heartfelt chronicle of a man and his car ever written. I like the emphasis that a vehicle so old can actually mean something to an asartes or person. That machine spirit makes all the difference and makes machines just a little bit human. Great video Brotha!
I started watching for the lore but I keep coming back for the creative stories. They’re fast becoming my favorite parts of the videos. You have an amazing talent. The stories are immersive and I have to say this one actually gave me the feels. Keep up the great work, Sir.
My favourite tidbit about the Land Raider and Land Speeder are that they were originally called *Land's* Raider and *Land's* Speeder. As in, designed by someone named Land and not a raider or speeder that happens to be on land.
I knew what the story would involve, before it was revealed to be a Land Raider. But still I wept. Because if I got it correct, the Land Raider self-activated, ran uncrewed into battle, and saved the lives of the Astartes captain and his men, before coaxing a Ork Battalion into her Troop Bay and vented her Plasma intakes within, destroying herself, and the entire Ork regiment. It's a touching story, and one that made me weep.
The music, the voice... The sheer feeling of a Marine being so vulnerable. It makes me imagine all the scene. In the dark future of the 41st mileniun, even the most hardened warriors have a soul.
This was basically me as a kid when my mum got a new car. She'd had the same ultra-reliable Ford from before I was born until I was 9 years old before a lorry hit it and insurance declared that it was cheaper to pay a lump sum towards a new car than repair that one. I literally resented the next car we had, even though it was nicer, more comfortable, had more leg room and was generally better in every way. It was the car after that which I accepted, grudgingly at first - it had heated seats and it's hard to stay cold towards a car that literally warms you (especially when it's your freezing backside in the middle of winter).
Man... I totally get it. One of my tours in Iraq was spent almost entirely in a humvee. We did almost everything in that thing. Ate in it, slept in it, fought from it And then two weeks from the end of our tour we hit an IED. We had some concussions, some shrapnel but we were ok. The humvee on the other hand, the engine and front left wheel were blown all over the road. Felt like watching your house burn down.
when i heard the opening i was like "this must be about a female warriors, a loved one, or someone worthy enough to fight next to the blood angels" ..well technically i was correct in all the areas? :3

Thank you also for that huge compliment. McDowell is a phenomenon. Just amazing in everything he is in. I only wish I had a tenth of his talent. :)
Freaking love Land Raiders! My favourite story tidbit concerns a Land Raider that was thought lost, blasted into an inland sea. Although it took hundreds of years it gradually crawled it's way back through the muck and mire at the bottom of the water, preserving its energy reserves just enough to slowly, so so slowly, creep it's way back on land. And it made it! Once it reached the shallows it had just enough gumption left to send out a signal that was picked up and eventually it was reunited with its chapter. Glorious!
Wonderful stuff. Your beautiful focus on the relationships and how they are not straightforward, and the human impact for the 40k world for me, really sets your work out. This was exceptional, and I loved it. Like the salamanders one, this will be listened to many times
ooh come on I was just going to put on some highlights and started crying, so much feel , you are a great narrator sir ,Land Raiders are my absolute favorite 40K tank
I am sorry to have disrupted your highlighting brother! But sometimes its good to have a bit of a release. We chaps don't get many avenues, eh? Landraiders. Only an ATAT as the same iconic feel, or an Imperial Star Destroyer. Nothing else. Nothing. Maybe Galactica. But then I really am showing my age then. :) Thanks for listening, brother. I hope the paint brushes are obeying. :)
I didn't see the title of the video and cried at the beginning when I thought it was an actual women he loved that had died in battle. When I realized it was a Landraider I cried harder.
I never understood the Machine Spirit, but this makes me realize that the men and women of the Imperium are connected to their machine spirits like a man and a loyal dog. That makes me understand the pain they go through when they lose a great machine. This made me cry and I do believe I’ve needed this. And the Tau call them savages and the Eldar call them primitive! This is why I love the Imperium! Thank you Brother Baldemort you show us what we do not see from the usual perspective.
The Captain's helmet was red as he was thinking about his Land Raider? Fnar! 😁 I have a feeling that would be frowned upon, even in the Astartes. Just don't inspect the exhaust pipe! Thank you once again for a dramatic, emotional and above all humanising take. It's so easy to forget about the machine spirits except as a game mechanic, it's one of the parts of the lore that's so divorced from our own time.
Rest In Piece by the Emperor's side noble Land Raider ;_;7 I loved this video, the Vehicles are a huge part of why I got into the game. I am looking forward to the future videos about guard tanks!
Oh my god that was amazing. I love your videos. I just found this channel the other day. It is easily one of the best 40K channels i've seen. I really love the openings, I've read a ton of 40K novels. I love your voice and style. So glad I've found this channel.
Ahhh. The poor sad Blood Angel. Hope his broken heart doesn't ruin his appetite for human flesh. 😆 Nice video. Looking forward to more in depth ones. And if the little Blood Angel is still upset then I'm sure the sons of Curze could find ways to take his mind off of it. One cut at a time.
Another good intro story. I love how you really captured the love the space marines have for their land Raiders. Sadly though, I'm not that into the land raider as I am more of a star wars clone wars vehicle kind of guy. My most favorite sci-fi vehicle ever is hands down the ATTE. Now that vehicle is a dog.
Loved the short story at the beginning mate. I think they're the best part of the videos to be honest. I own at least 7 of these beasts and a spartan assault tank to head them. In the 5th edition codex of the blood Angel's, I'd load them up with terminators and deep strike 3 into the rear of the enemy. Sometimes it went horribly wrong and the scatter dice would drop them back, or worse on to impassible terrain or the enemy (killing them outright), or dropping them and disgorging a minimum of 15 hungry terminators ready for blood. How I miss the fun of those games. Thanks Bodermort!
The comparison of a Land Raider to a dog hurt me emotionally a lot more than it should have, given that I play Space Wolves I have a Land Raider that I call 'Blackmanes Fury' as within the chapters lore the Iron Priests see the machine spirits of the chapters vehicles as children of the Iron Wolf and take special care to essentially feed the Land Raiders especially raw meat to rouse the machine spirits within, where they are later rewarded with ale and mead for particularly good kills. And so the idea I had was that the 'Blackmanes Fury' in my army always had a tendency of ramming into lines of enemy infantry, grinding them beneath her tracks as the twin heavy bolter guns down anyone who flees and the 4 lascannons strike at targets of opportunity. And so to encourage this behavior, the crew, at the requests to one of the Iron Priests, had claws mounted onto the sides at the front of the vehicles frame so when it rams into enemies it slices through them like a knife through butter, impaling flesh onto the blades. This has also given me more incentive to grab a Land Raider Crusader to give the 'Blackmanes Fury' an equally fearsome pack-sibling :)
The pintle mounted multi melta on my land raider is a long fang standing on the finder, melta in hand and smoking a large cigar just enjoying a nice peaceful drive through a warzone.
*Cries in sheer rage* The Tyranids have done a great deal of atrocities against mankind, but that story at the start? That's just TOO far. A tale so sad The Emperor's Angels of Death cried in mourning. Well done, Brother! Hope you start uploading these separetedly over time so people can enjoy them as their own thing and become easier to listen to should one want to listen to a narrative sequence crafted by your brilliant mind!
Ah brother Baldemort. I remember, how my beloved first tank met her end. It wasn't at the hands of an enemy... It was because of the negligence of someone I thought a friend.
Adopt a tank.........The Land Raider is dying, Will they soon be extinct ? If you would like to sponsor one of these magnificent war machines send money to GW or any discount model supplier, please help keep these armoured marvels alive!
Damn it Baldemort, stop making me cry about fictional tanks!!! In all seriousness tho, your ability to get into charakter for all these different factions, people and perspectives really makes me fall in love with each and everyone. Like I wasn't going to get any war mashines for my 40k army, cause I don't care about cars irl so why should I care about them in my sci-fi war game, but you just convinced me to get a landraider for my army (so on behalf of my troops I thank you)

Thank you also for that huge compliment. McDowell is a phenomenon. Just amazing in everything he is in. I only wish I had a tenth of his talent. :)
@@baldermort your talent is top notch. I was on another channel that bad mouthed the Land Raider, found this jewel. A masterpiece Sir. Well done.
Well done, definitely teared up. Reminded me of the time a Humvee saved me overseas. Thank you for this video.
Glorious!
Adam Jones gotta love raiders. Full stop. Love. :).
Which novel is that
askzrin nirza ? I wrote it. Sorry to disappoint. :(.
Wonderful stuff. Your beautiful focus on the relationships and how they are not straightforward, and the human impact for the 40k world for me, really sets your work out. This was exceptional, and I loved it. Like the salamanders one, this will be listened to many times
posh rocky many thanks for such high praise again, brother Rocky. Always a pleasure to know it hit the spot. ;).
You always hit me right on my lunch break. What time is it where you're at?
17:00 GMT is when I drop them. Sorry!
@@baldermort
Sorry about what? I was just wondering what time it was there compared to what time it was here I'm in Ohio

Rest now, you magnificent killing machine. 😢
ooh come on I was just going to put on some highlights and started crying, so much feel , you are a great narrator sir ,Land Raiders are my absolute favorite 40K tank
Thanks for listening, brother. I hope the paint brushes are obeying. :)
@@baldermort No need to apologize brother , when you are emotionally moved you know thats its a amazing pice of art you expirienced
I didn't see the title of the video and cried at the beginning when I thought it was an actual women he loved that had died in battle. When I realized it was a Landraider I cried harder.
For me it was rhe same
[The Martian Priesthood approves this message. Gloria in Deus Machina.]
Thank you for listening, as always, brother Jack. :)
*Still laughing at the Dolce et*
I never understood the Machine Spirit, but this makes me realize that the men and women of the Imperium are connected to their machine spirits like a man and a loyal dog. That makes me understand the pain they go through when they lose a great machine. This made me cry and I do believe I’ve needed this.
And the Tau call them savages and the Eldar call them primitive! This is why I love the Imperium!
Thank you Brother Baldemort you show us what we do not see from the usual perspective.
And now I have cried
because a short-story dude
cried over a tank.
Guess I can scratch that off the bucket list...
Arkan Land’s greatest rediscovery! I’d love to field an army of nothing but Land Raiders
Nice, heartful naration, oh dear look a dust caught in my eye.. yup something on my eye all right
I need to go hug my land raider.
Then take it out and stomp in the name of the Emperor? Amiright? :)
The Captain's helmet was red as he was thinking about his Land Raider? Fnar! 😁
I have a feeling that would be frowned upon, even in the Astartes. Just don't inspect the exhaust pipe!
Thank you once again for a dramatic, emotional and above all humanising take. It's so easy to forget about the machine spirits except as a game mechanic, it's one of the parts of the lore that's so divorced from our own time.
Ethan Kristopher-Hartley ooooh errr missus. :).
Thanks for listening, brother. :).
By the Emperor... your voiceacting is amazing !.
Almost shed a tear on this one.. "why take on the knight"..
Thank you brother Dreez. Just an enthusiastic amateur. I have no idea what I am doing, I just give it a go. :)
Glad you enjoyed it. : )
Not gonna lie u had me at 1 st half I was a space marine crying for love who is this women them ban landraider u sure fool me there well done
TheDarkninja1988 thank yea sir. :).
That actually made me feel the feels. You are a grand writer/narrator. Good music too:)
One boy and his landraider. Felt like a lad crying over ol yeller or lassie dying. Sniff...its just allergies...not crying..
Rest In Piece by the Emperor's side noble Land Raider ;_;7 I loved this video, the Vehicles are a huge part of why I got into the game. I am looking forward to the future videos about guard tanks!
Bohdan Bilas thank you, brother. I hope to do them justice, but they are not raiders. :).
Truth be told, machine spirits are a thing in 40k, so it's not even weird.
Wow! You really are one of the most unique 40k channels! I love your content!
Yep that brought some tears to my eyes. Awesome intro sir.
Joel Smith thank you brother Joel, always. :).
I have goosebumps my good Baldermort. She was a good girl.
My word dear narrator, you have a rare and unique gift. My humble thanks for putting here where all can enjoy it. My hat is off to you old bean
One cut at a time.
gadzilla 666 Ave Dominus Nox, brother.
But the sons of Sanguinius can stand up for themselves. ;).
Blash Casual aye, those walkers look more ‘doggy’. :).
Oh wow. How much would it cost me for you to read me a telephone book. Or the instructions to my toaster. ANYTHING!
*nods sagely* Yes. This is all very good indeed. I certainly second the need for a crusader packmate. It would be glorious. :)
I'm not crying, my eyes are leaking. It's quite comforting to know that a Space Marine can feel love. It's a cruel world.
The pintle mounted multi melta on my land raider is a long fang standing on the finder, melta in hand and smoking a large cigar just enjoying a nice peaceful drive through a warzone.
Baldermort my friend you have a gift for storytelling, this actually made me cry my eyes out, well done sir.
LOL!!!!!!!! Just lol!!! :)
I CRIED OVER A TANK. THANK YOU MY LORD!
I absolutely love how viciously is uttered the simple line: "End QUOTE!"
Ah, a nice little birthday surprise this is.
Happy birthday brother. I hope it is a magnificent year ahead for you. :)
Always a good lunch break before work, when a new Baldermort video hits.
thank you for listening brother Richard, as always. I hope the shift goes smoothly and productively. :)
Baldermort's Guide to Warhammer Thanks Brother, I’m just hoping my patients behave themselves! :)
Damn it Baldemort, stop making me cry about fictional tanks!!!
In all seriousness tho, your ability to get into charakter for all these different factions, people and perspectives really makes me fall in love with each and everyone.
Like I wasn't going to get any war mashines for my 40k army, cause I don't care about cars irl so why should I care about them in my sci-fi war game, but you just convinced me to get a landraider for my army (so on behalf of my troops I thank you)
Dude wtf. How are you so good that you made me cry over a fucking landraider. You're ridiculous and I love it
Not gonna lie...After hearing that intro i went and dug out my land raider crusader and apologized to it for letting it languish inside of a box, lol!
Immaculate work you sir are a paragon of dedication to your work.
I didn't cry for 'Fury' -
I cried for a BA Landraider -
WHY?!?!?!?!?!
Never thought I would ever cry about a tank. No regrets
Oh she's a landraider I thought it was a mother and then a wife but no its a landraider. Beautiful.
Whos crying? Me? Nooo... Thats just... An alergy to dust. Yes. Just an alergy...

Best memory for me is taking two of these out in one turn with my Scarab swarms :)
Was that 6th edition or earlier? Scarab omnomomon. Always fun! :)
@@baldermort Yeah I think it was 6th, when they use to reduce the AV by one with each 4+ they rolled, It was fun destroying an AV tank with a strength 3 Necron pet
From a 40k veteran from rouge day even have my mark 1 .you have a the hart of a poet .
Thank yea, brother Angus. I am glad it brightened your day a tiny bit. :)
Did more than brighten my day looking forward to more of your work and will spred knowledge of your site far and wide providing the inquisitors don't catch me
A really emotional and good story.
You need to do one specific about the machine spirits.
I think you might be able to get me to understand the deal with them.... the rest of TH-cam have failed in that...
Tryggve Den Store fair point. I’ll get on that soon. :).
Machine spirits and ad mech up soon. :).
