Essential Fuzz Tips for Helix

  • For my Presets visit: johnnathancord... Fuzz pedals can be (I think) quite temperamental - especially given how few components are generally in these circuits, there are so many variables like which amp you're using, which fuzz, what pickups etc. Likewise, in the Helix, it's possible to get pretty DODGY sounding fuzz tones - here are some tips that work for me though.
    Let me know if you want me to drop this preset into the folder.
    / johnnathancordy get my backing tracks here
    www.buymeacoff... - if you like what I do and
    only if you wanted, you could buy me a coffee!
    I've decided to make it possible to grab both my Helix/HX Stomp bundles (the expression bundle with freeze presets has always been separate) together for £5 - www.paypal.com... - I will then email you a link to both bundles!
    You can get my EXPRESSION patches in this bundle using this link - I will then send out the patches! www.paypal.com...
    Try my patches (60-70+) for Helix or HX Stomp in this bundle for £3 using this link - I will then send out the patches! www.paypal.com...
    Try my patches for Pod GO for £3 using this link - I will then send out the patches! www.paypal.com...

    In the real world, I love to run a Big Muff into a Klon to regain some mids. Then, I boost the Muff with a Tube Screamer to tighten things up. The perfect doom/stoner metal combo!

    Maybe I missed it, so forgive me if it was mentioned, but a really important aspect of many fuzz tones is rolling the guitar's volume knob back. Fuzzes like the Arbitrator change in character hugely when adjusting the volume knob. Many of the classic fuzz tones (a la Hendrix when he wasn't going full-bore with it) are from fuzz with the guitar volume rolled back to where the fuzz is more subtle and gives it a bite instead of a spitty distortion.

      Will this go into the pod go folder as well? Last update in there is 3/29. Maybe I'm missing something? Thx!

    grateful for this. the only fuzz I can ever get to sound passable is the tychoctavia, just like how you set it up and pushing a dirty amp. I maintain that the HX could use a "fuzz update" just like how 2.5 or whatever was the "reverb update."

      Try the recently added Ram’s Head (Bighorn Fuzz). It sounds spectacular. Edit: also, another tip that wasn't in the vid--lots of classic fuzz tones are achieved by rolling the guitar's volume back. (this is true with the real pedals as well as the Helix models). There is a strong interaction between guitar volume and the character of the fuzz, going from a kind of sparkly bite at lower volume to a spitty crushed mess at full volume.

      +1 to that "fuzz update". It's the only part of Helix I can't say I like at all. I've heard so many tricks: set impedance to first, to auto, to enabled, roll the guitar volume down... Honestly, I've had 3 fuzz pedals and I had to do nothing for them to sound amazing. In a beast like the Helix, it should be as easy.

    That answered quite a few questions I had about fuzz tones with the HX Stomp, especially the gain staging with a edge of break-up amp and even another overdrive pedal. Thanks a lot!

    Now try using the Dynamic Split to move from a fuzz to a clean compressor (or vice versa) as you play!

    Do the HX Stomp fuzz sims react (clean up) with the guitar volume knob just like real fuzz pedals? I have a HXFX and thinking about upgrading to Helix Floor as the HXFX doesn’t have that impedance circuit and fuzzes sound harsh…
    (Btw are you only using a speaker sim and no amp sim? 😅)

    What if I have some actual pedals in front of the Stomp? impedance wise

    • @johnnathancordy
      @johnnathancordy  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It won't make a difference as the impedance circuit only interacts with your guitar if you're plugging straight into the Stomp - if there's anything between it breaks the relationship

  • @400_billion_suns
    @400_billion_suns 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    It looks like they have a bug with the display of the impedance options in the global settings on the Stomp. It’s supposed to read “first block” or “first enabled.” Regardless the one you said to use is correct! But one of us should report this to Line 6 if it’s a bug… (ok ok maybe I’ll do it after some coffee)

    • @johnnathancordy
      @johnnathancordy  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't think it's a bug - it says that on the full Helix, this is just shorted because of the smaller screen real estate I'd assume?
