The way you’re thinking about your pasta is exactly how I do it. I pour into a bucket that I keep in my storage pantry what I buy from azure and keep glass gallon jars in my kitchen for frequent use. Works wonderful!

Back in the day, I turned one day a week into a big cook day which translated into 52 weeks' worth of big cook days minus 5 to 10. Most of the big cook days involved some sort of food preservation. I was petty good at multi-tasking and keeping up with the dishes used in my small kitchen.

My husband and I go in on a whole cow with my sister in law and her husband every year. Our part comes to about $1800. That equivilates to approximately 400 pounds of beef. This will feed my family of 5, plus my mother in law for a year. Understandably, this is a sizable investment that we finance with our tax return. We are also fortunate to have a generator, so worse case scenario, we are not in danger of losing our investment to grid failures. My advice to anybody wanting to achieve food stability is to go in with family, friends, etc. and pool your resources. If you buy local, the quality and price are so much better than what you can get in the grocery store. We are paying around $4.50 per pound, and that includes steaks, roasts, hamburger etc. Spread out over a year, it is so much more affordable. Not to mention, I get soup bones, the heart, tongue, and liver for free. We don't eat the organ meat, but my dogs love it!

I love the For Jars hand-held vacuum sealer. For me it works better than the more common brand (also not available during the big C), plus it does rely on the grid.

Buy what you use, use what you buy. Yup. Great advice! We got caught out buying things we don't use at the beginning, but we learned. :)
Edit: Also, how quickly or slowly you go through things was a learning experience. Paying attention saves lots of "too much stuff" syndrome.

If you keep your larder rotated and want an easy way to figure out actual usage, mark the date purchased on the front of the containers with perma markers. Another way is to (also) put the date opened on the front in perma marker. For 5 gallon buckets, add this information on tape adhered to the bucket. (I completely empty, wash, and dry my containers before adding products to them despite the size.)

I’m just getting to see this video, Jaylea. Spent yesterday canning tomatoes. Continuing to put up more today. This has been a productive month for my shelves!
I have been in practice to buy turkey in November when they are on sale for Thanksgiving. It’s a fam fave to have turkey canned as well as chicken and ground meats. We aren’t really red meat people. It started as a health issue with my dad DECADES ago and now is just habit.
I, myself, am holding off on bulk purchases of freezer foods until we get a decent freezer and a generator that can support it. My next house will have an automatic generator. That’s for sure. But I don’t believe I will be in this house beyond the next 5-10 years. But as long as I have my momma and she wants to be here we will be here.

I applaude you for thinking ahead. My plan is to have 3 months of food on my shelves at anytime, especially by November. Let's face it. There are going to upset people regardless of which way the election goes. Last time, the disruptions lasted around 3 months.
As for water and electricity. Buy rechargeable batteries. Less trash. More usage. Get a small generator. I have one that can be recharged with a "briefcase" solar panel. You can always build your system from there. It will not run large appliances but will recharge batteries and run small appliances, like a sewing machine and other things. Get a small camping stove, the type that can heat a tent/greenhouse/chicken run, etc. Start "dumpster diving" for old windows to harness solar power. All will work now, but give you more security in the future. Keep stocking up on those items that you eat. Can to make things shelf stable. Buy unenambled cast iron that can be used on any surface and under almost any condition. I just need to provide for myself, but I also have family and friends that I would like to be able to help. Meat and vegetables are great, but think fruit also. You talked about bartering. A jar of jelly can be just as important as a battery. Think outside the box. Humans can be very fickle creatures. They will crave and trade their souls for insignificant things. Fruit and its by-products are actually very important from a dietary standpoint. They prevent some really nasty diseases.
Do not forget to stock seeds... any that you can get that are not hybrids. Heading a few plants for neat, cheese, milk can make a difference.
This also applies to natural disasters. Meteor strikes, volcanoes erupting, earthquakes, hurricanes, inflation....you name it.
I am not afraid. I am just giving myself a chance.

I too am listening and feel the same as you. We are just doing a little bit here and there to get ahead. Our pantry has sustained us, through Covid, sickness and deaths in our family as well as loss of work. I have canning goals, and other food things I want to learn like you! By the time we bought it at $1/ lb it was right on the sell by date. Weve been using it more sparingly this 2024 to make it last but it is still fine.

Throw their hands up in the air and not do anything because they didn't do it sooner. Just because you've been stocking up for years doesn't mean that everyone has the time or means to do it and to be honest, before 2020 most people who stock up now never stocked up before. You say "foolish people who wait too long." I say foolish people who tell others it too late.

Having something and starting when you can is better than having nothing. Shame on you.
