#24 - Emptying Our Old Stone Shed, Demolishing Walls & Gardening at Our Renovation Project

- While Michael continues to chip off the render, he also finds time to create a raised bed in the garden and we get to work emptying an old stone shed in the courtyard. Becci even has a go with the sledgehammer, AKA Percy Sledge.
Every day, we're slowly peeling back the layers on this restoration project! We receive so many lovely comments each week and it really means the world to us. Thank you!

When you were pulling out what you thought was an old wine press I visioned a couple of chairs.
Interesting 😅
The rebar on the wall ties the rocks , prevents colapse.
Thank you ☺️
Seems like the clay pot inside the plastic bucket was used to collect resin from the pine trees, I don't know if that practice is still done nowadays, but when I was a kid and ride my bicycle off road I would see those all the time.
Thank you. I'm not sure if they still do it but our neighbours still make the most of everything on their land so I'm going to ask them 😊 They're beautiful pots!
Are the locals curious/interested in what you are doing? They must notice what an improvement you are making!
They are! Often slow down, especially now Michael's been doing the front of the house. One older man pulled up to tell him the house was beautiful and he was doing a great job 🥰
Aww that's nice. It looks so good. Does Michael prefer chipping it off with that little scrapper? I've seen people with some kind of vibrating tool.@@PortugalonaPostcard
He's worried about damaging the stone/brick underneath so he's happier with his little chisel 😅
You really do have a talent for reading the building and it is appreciated that you give time to explain what you are doing . You and Becky work well together. The wall look so much better without the render, I can’t understand why it was put on in the first place. Good video, thanks.
Thanks so much ☺️ amazing how things change over the years. I often joke that someone will come along in 30 years and render the stone again 😅 thanks again!!
It's unbelievable ,how much you have done with a chisel and a hammer. Enjoying your videos!!😊😊🇬🇷 🇬🇷
😅 thanks so much! Means a lot 💛
The stonework looks far better than the plaster, the stairs in particular looking absolutely amazing.👍
Amazing how much it changes them isn't it. Thank you ❤️
I have seen an old wine Barrel like yours being used as a privacy shield for an outdoor Summer shower, it looked fabulous 😊😊
Ooo interesting!! We'll definitely put it to use somewhere. It's lovely 💛💛 thank you!
You can also use the barrel as an outside table.
We might do that! 😊 Thank you.
Enjoyed the video tonight. A lot of work has been done. The stones are beautiful. Thanks for sharing with us all.
Thanks so much ☺️ have a lovely weekend!
There are so many little rooms and I guess they all had a purpose but, wow, clearing out looks very difficult.
Lots of little rooms 😅 but amazing to see things opening up 😊 thanks for watching!
The two half parts that you've shown are parts from an old hidraulic grapes press. If you want I can send you pics from one that I've found, exactly the same as yours. Your work on your Stone House project is starting to achieve remarkable results. Lots of different spaces to restore but at the end, you both will turn it on an amazing Manor House. Keep going and sharing it with us. Cheers from Lisbon.
Very interesting! Thanks so much 😊 it's such a beautiful house, we can't wait to bring it back to life. Thanks for watching 💛
Great work but please consider wearing eye protection when chipping away at the render/stone work.
Thank you 💛
Great job 😄
Thanks so much 😊
Thanks for your vid 😇💟💟💟 Love and bless you guys good work again 😘.
Thanks so much 💛💛 hope you're having a great weekend!! 😘
Just found your channel and have subscribed 😁✅✅✅✅
Thank you so much 💛💛💛
Love that you work more than talking. Enjoying your video😊
Thanks so much 😊 that means a lot!
Just came across your channel and LOVE IT. What a beautiful place 😁. I’ve gone back to vlog 1 and binge watching your progress. FANTASTIC.
Oh thanks so much! That's lovely to hear 😍
Michael you have a great capacity for many hours of hard work. I admire your tenacity and like you I enjoy a good clean up.
Thanks so much 😊
Thac'n tek a lad outta Yorkshire bu tha'll ne'er tek Yorkshire outta t'lad 🙂
you’re so dry Michael, so matter of fact! It’s great how you just get on with it actually, small targets, finished when it’s done. Great ethos for such a big renovation.
'Right, well we’re gonna have a couple of hours, Becky’s out for the day' mate I’d be straight in the fridge and getting Netflix on!
Haha! 😅 Thank you! He's definitely Yorkshire through and through 😊 that's the problem with living nextdoor to the renovation... There's always a job to do! Although it's raining today so might be a netflix day 😉 thanks for watching!
As an artist the strip of concrete appeals to me as an interedting organic shape. I wonder if you can paint it using pigmented lime of your choice and make it a feature…
Oh interesting! Great idea 😊 we'll have to have a look at that. Thank you!
The soil was black so I think ( also because of the holes) it is used to burn something or to cook there in the little room.
The former owners did take a lot of effort there to build it up .
It's definitely had some kind of fire in there. People have said to smoke hams and make the local firewater 😊 thanks for watching and commenting! Means a lot 💛
....sledge hammer ....👍💣💩😁...great job!
😅 thank you!! 😊
It would make a very good planter !
It would!! 😍
While it would look good, water & wet dirt would rot the wood pretty quickly. You could treat the wood with a sealer & use a plastic liner to protect the wood.
I really don't know where you both get the energy from .
Your very old grape press is beautiful and I'd say, made by a cooper, + not a homemade knock up. Collectors would pay quite a bit for one, in such good condition. Would look great surrounding a log basket, beside your future fireplace or one half either side. Keep it dry and inside. The cute flower pot is a really nice shape. Till the next video 🙃
Thanks so much 😊 we'll definitely make a feature of the press and the flower pots!
You're making great progress & revealing the beautiful stone structure. Where abouts are you? Our renovation is close to Alvorge, so wondered how far away you guys were? - Sorry, just read your 'About' page & noticed you're in Figueiró dos Vinhos which is about 30 mins away. We're not living in PT, but if we're about & you need a hand with something that needs more than the 2 of you, let me know 👍
Thanks so much. That's really kind! Not been to Alvorge before but it's not far away at all 😊 what are your plans?
Just found out orange peel is good for keeping spiders and flies away. Rub peel on window frames etc. I've got an old pigsty to demolish plus a brickwall where the chickens were kept.
Oh interesting!!! Thanks John ☺️
The ugly wall is becoming beautiful. The cement and the alge are both ugly. Good job!
For old houses cement is deadly.
Perhaps you can camouflage the old iron pipes with mortar and flat stonework.
Thank you so much 😊 it's amazing how much it's transforming each week!
Hi that round thing is for press the grapes juice when they make wine
Thank you 🍷
Once you have removed the old layer of plaster. Are you then going to provide the walls with a new layer of plaster?
We'll repoint the stone. We'd like to leave a lot of it exposed but may lime plaster some 😊
So much work!! Great job! Seriously, it will be very rewarding once you are done. What is your ETA on the final project? Just wondering. You must have had some help from the dogs, they seem pretty exhausted at the end!! What an adventure you two embarked on. I was thinking the bucket was full of human poop but that would just be dirt by now, anyway. What do you do with all the debris? Is there a proper way to dispose of it in Portugal? If so, is it free or paid by the load?
Thanks so much 😊 we haven't really set a deadline ... We keep joking that we'll be in by Christmas but haven't said which one 😂
Oh, haha! 💩 I hadn't thought about that but you could be right!
We've actually just had a skip delivered today. We've not found it easy or cheap but wanted to make sure it was all done properly.
Thanks so much 💛
salting pan for pork ham
Interesting! Thank you 😊
Have you thought of using power tools to help removing render or digging stones? It is that not an option?
Thank you. We have but been worried about causing damage to stones or causing too much disturbance to them 😊
Please use safety glasses when doing demo as one sharp piece in your eye could blind you.
Thank you 😊

The same pattern as chinese building approach. No rebars. No dowels nor horizontas.. Wonder whats Portuguese bldg code. Also wonder about bldg permits. In our country, even renovation and demolition requires permit. I'm a contractor. I also do budget builds. But building a small concrete structure with no rebars is unbelievable.
Thankfully the house itself is built of stone so not too much concrete structure! The laws here are quite different. We need permits to change anything though!
Are you sure those roof sheets are not asbestos?
Yeah 😊

Thank you 😊 I do want to do a proper plan ... Maybe when we are discussing how we will set out the rooms etc.! We do have the house tours (videos #1-3) which might help explain our setup for now! 💛
Too bad you couldn't have save the old forge and sink.
Well at least you're not living in England.
