    Sprinkle dry grits where you have ants. They will take it into their nest and it will kill them off. If it gets wet, reapply more grits. Takes a day or two, but it works great.

      Grits, or hominy, a southern breakfast food.
      Dry corn meal works too.
      I try to keep it away from birds, as it can harm them too.
      Beats putting poison in your garden or yard.

    I came back to this video after a while as i am starting my new gardens at the new house. I think i already said this previously but this is very close to what we used to do in Tuscany's mountains when there was no other way to make food than making it yourself. We have heavily terraced mountains where our grandpas used to grow olive trees, figs, apples, and all sort of fruit trees and they had grain, beans and potatos growing below them... Together with all other annuals.
    I like this approach as it is the closest one to the traditional farming in my area but with a lot of exotic plant ideas to improve resilience ❤

    • @CeresIsABetterPlanetThanPluto
      @CeresIsABetterPlanetThanPluto ปีที่แล้ว +23

      @wanderingtheusa This kind of comment makes kind, outgoing women reading it worried to be themselves, to be curious, to ask for help, to start new things. Not a fan.
      Honor your marriage by joyfully being a good partner and teammate. If your spouse cant be trusted around kind, outgoing people, then the problem is *not* the outgoing person. If you cant trust your spouse around outgoing people, you need marriage counselling.
      Good heavens, a woman asking questions of an expert about the very thing that person is an expert in is EDUCATION not flirtation. How else was she supposed to learn anything? Text her husband and beg him to ask for her? Looks like the husband was camera shy or had other commitments.
      Sherry and her husband seemed like a really loving couple still willing to try new ventures together and were lucky enough to have David as a friend willing to help. What a shame to perceive ugliness when there was loveliness.

    Love it ❤❤❤ Great to help your friends get started. I did Geoff Lawton's Permaculture Design Course about 8 years ago. This confirmed basically all that my parents taught me growing up as a child. Very much on par and out of the box thinking to norm at the time. This is great and wonderful knowledge you are passing on to your children ( as well as all the other people you have inspired and educated online) they will never forget. Heaven forbid, if something happened to you and your fabulous wife, this knowledge and physically going out and doing it, will stay with them for the rest of their lives. I lost both my parents as a young teen 2 1/2 years apart. The green thumb, the animal training (we were on a farm), the skills, knowledge, out-of-the-box thinking, the great inventions, the crazy inventions, mad and great and mechanics, building stuff, cooking and preserving foods we had grown, many types of art, sewing, top quality butchery and related skills, the native rescue animals (we used to help a local wildlife sanctuary a LOT), some would say we had a bit of a zoo but we had a farm filled with livestock and injured or orphaned wildlife, half paddocks, half bush and 5 house cows that were milked by hand, huge vege gardens and Mum's magnificent flower gardens, family birthdays, celebrations, and get togethers will always stay with me and have passed this on to my children, the cycle continues. I have over 10 siblings and LOTS of nephews and nieces. Life was ALWAYS LEARNING, doing, growing, inventing and encouraging. Most things had to have many purposes. Very few one-use things were ever around. We also bartered a lot and hardly went to the shops. Believe me that your time is not wasted teaching your children. They are very lucky too that you have so much wonderful valuable knowledge on your vids they can look at, as well as your books. Sharing your knowledge with others is a wonderful thing, thank you to all your family for the time and effort you put in.
    God bless you all, from Australia 😊😊😊

    I started my first garden this year in central/north Florida and I used a lot of things I’ve learned from watching this channel. I started by tilling and making 5ft by 5ft ground beds. I layered the sandy soil with things like alfalfa and manure to help repair the hydrophobic sand then I mulched everything with some dead shredded palmetto tree trunks. It did way better than I expected through spring! Now I’m thinking I want to change things up and this grocery row garden idea seems cool!

    As you were looking at the Arapahoe berry plants it reminded me of the berry plants I got from a friend one year. He has a friend in the University of Arkansas’ AG department. This friend gave him some thornless berries that never made it to commercial sale because they are “too aggressive.” By the time I dug a couple canes to move to my garden. He had dozens if not a hundred plants. All of which derived from four. I love blackberries so much I don’t care that I can’t count how many I have now. I imagine this strain is closely related to the Arapahoe berries.

    This was excellent! I watched the whole thing. I had to pause several times because...well, life happens. Where the heck were you when I started with fruit trees 15 years ago? They are a MESS!! We bought the book "Grow a little fruit tree" AFTER six years. If they grow any fruit, the critters get it. Although one year we had so many pears that it broke off branches. Then, my husband "pruned" it. Not a pear since. The minus 2 degrees in December killed our three fig trees back to the ground. But, they are coming back like gangbusters now. Thank goodness! Really enjoyed this. I had to laugh at the gal you were helping out. She knew even less than I did when I started. LOL But, I'm sure she's learned a lot just in this short time.

    One thing Ive learned the hard way, this system is dramatically easier with flat land. Do your rows on contour of youve got a lot of slope or make terraces, preferably on contour. Trying to do straight rows on significantly sloped land spells bad news on a heavy rain.
    Also sun affects things quite a bit differently on a slope.
    Put your faster growing trees/bushes (elderberries) on the south side. Theyll make more shade for the other plants and theyll be forced to grow up straighter. I tried to do my taller stuff on the north side and now everything in my garden leans to the south. That little bit o shade forces the tree (and veggies) to try to grow taller first.

    • @davidthegood
      @davidthegood  ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I was thrilled to watch this video! I have taken two permaculture design courses and have had a hard time wrapping my head around tree guilds and mixing things up. This method is like a tree guild, but a little different. I love it! I’m so envious of Sherrie’s soil! We moved two years ago from and acre in north-central Illinois with amazing soil we created over 22 years, to far southern Missouri with 20 acres, half wooded, of clay that grows rocks. It’s horrific. We planted a small orchard, as well as a large garden that we’re experimenting with a variety of growing methods for annuals. I think this spring I’m going to start playing with some grocery store gardens in the orchard. The trees have been there two years, so I can add the shrubs and the smaller plants. I’ll have to do a little at a time, probably digging holes and making Biochar in them like I saw you do in another video. I also bought The Intelligent Gardener, Water Wise Gardening and Grow or Die. Besides rocks instead of soil, rain likes to tease us and then go around us. We go anywhere from 3-8 weeks between significant rainfall here.

    David, one of your past videos inspired me to grow mango trees from store bought mangos. The cute little guys are about 12 inches high now! We also grew pineapple plants from store bought pineapples and this year they started fruiting. So far we have three beautiful pineapples growing! I have four lemon trees I grew from seed, one is 5 feet tall now. We also grew blood orange trees from seed and they are doing well! The first one made it through freezing temps in the greenhouse so we are going to plant it in the ground this year and cover it in the winter. We live in Alabama zone 8b. I think I will overwinter the mango trees indoors though. Thanks for your inspiration! We have all of your books!

    I have a garden that I built 14 yrs ago, with 4ft wide beds with 3ft paths. I expanded it this year, and did 3 1/2ft beds with 2ft paths and I am really enjoying the slightly smaller beds. It's just that much easier to reach across.

      I believe DTG is 6ft or so. 4 vs 3 or 3.5 makes a huge difference to us short folk.

    My wee suburban garden is so tiny compared to this, this is a dream 🥰 I just added a hay bale garden this year, in addition to my one raised bed. (had to do something non-wasteful with the last couple years’ Fall decorations lol) Peas and green beans already rocking in them, despite my concerns about Grazon (we’ll see how it works out) But seeing this .. oh my gosh I want fruit trees and berry shrubs so badly!
    How cool it must have been to have a David to come help! Like having. the Green Man smiling down on your land. 🪴🌝

    Tarping is great. Black plastic works well in killing vegetation and sterilizing. Rototilling disrupts the subsoil and some folks argue well against tilling. I've done tilling and no tilling and got similar results.

    • @davidthegood
      @davidthegood  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes. We used the tillage to loosen the top enough to raise the beds.

    Great layout spacing tips. Mulch paths. Different weather in Liverpool UK. Definitely allow root seedlings to scab up in cooler wetter climates. Farmers here are losing multiple plantings and belatedly going for more woodlands and ground cover, if they're not flooded out of business. Btw
    I used to sneer at labor-saving before my hernia😅.

    What a wonderful system for growing a some of everything! We Master Gardeners need to take note of this innovative gardening method. We just added 3 fruit guilds to our fruit trees this past fall and hope to expand them into a food forest. There will be some mini swales and "grocery rows" in there too! Godspeed sir, from NE Indiana! :J

    Pears love to shoot up, yeah, but their branches when laden with fruit will bend down and touch the grass. Definitely need to stay on top of pruning them. Personal best suggestion via experience is to do some spring pruning, then some late fall (after dropping leaves). I do this for all my trees, tying 'markers' on throughout the growing season so I know which is best. No science behind it other than personal observations for *my* trees and micro climate. :)

    I'm in FL and I have done the same simply because my husband doesn't want the fruit trees all over the yard. I planted peaches, plums, nectarines, apples, tropical cherries, herbs, Everglades tomato, African potato mint, roselle, etc. I didn't think of adding in blackberries! I picked up a lot of tips from your videos over the years, as well are your books.
