    Bees really are the most majestic insects. They're underappreciated and feared when all they do is help so long as you don't provoke them. Even then, when you bother them a bit, they're usually so relaxed and docile. Truly the most wonderful insects.

    • @captaincaveman471
      @captaincaveman471 3 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      They're only docile because we bred them to be that way. Europeans have been domesticating honey bees for hundreds if not thousands of years.

    What I will say about the flow hive, is that if you have the money for one, and you aren't doing this for profit, then these are awesome. That being said, they take up a lot more space than a normal frame, and they are EXPENSIVE. What this ends up meaning is that your going to get less honey per harvest than with a standard langstroth hive with normal boxes. We usually harvest 3-4 times a year. Our first harvest is of the honey that we left them for winter(I always leave a full super for my girls), and we treat them for varroa at the same time. Next harvest is end of spring to mid summer, depending on how the supers look. Final harvest is mid to late October when we set the hive up for their winter. Anything over that one super gets harvested.
    Personally I love long hives, but these really are clever. I have a single hive set up with them, but it does produce less, and once the box starts to come apart I will probably get rid of it because you have to make concessions for the convenience.

    • @rainnmoon114
      @rainnmoon114 ปีที่แล้ว

      What's a super? Also if you keep the hive under something with a roof (a shed or a pagoda or something) would it still deteriorate?

    • @johnb8440
      @johnb8440 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      @@rainnmoon114 a super is what you keep the honey in. You keep the queen and the brood chambers lower in the hive, and then above you have the honey supers. Hives boxes are going to deteriorate over time no matter what. You can't really paint them once they're in use. What we normally do is swap out the boxes and change the frames into a refurbished box, and then we either decide to refurbish or discard the box that we have removed. You can get 3 to 5 years of life out of a box before it needs refurb and repaint.
      Honey flow system is really nifty, but it produces about 30% less honey per super. That's not a bad thing, my grandfather is getting older and the convenience of it allows him to continue working with his bees. On a business level though they're not really an option.

      @rainnmoon114 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    • @johnb8440
      @johnb8440 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      @@rainnmoon114 for the most part, bees keep themselves. My job is to make sure they have space for resources, that they have resources through the winter, and that there aren't parasites affecting them. Beyond that, they mostly handle it themselves.

      Beekeepers leave some honey for the bees. A queen excluder is between the bottom of the hive and the supers atop that. The drones make honey in all chambers of the hive, but the queen is in the bottom part of the hive and that is where she lays her eggs. The supers are the parts of the hive that are "robbed" or harvested.

      My question was how do the bees know to open the caps back up, not whether this system works over time. My question was about the behavior of the bees. They clearly do know when the cell has been drained, so they chew the wax cap off and start again. But HOW do they know? Something like that wouldn't happen in nature, so you'd think if they saw the wax cap still on they'd assume honey was still in there and just leave it.

      Hi Ethan, that is a great question! We have found the bees will sense the cells are empty and begin the uncapping, re-waxing and refilling process straight away. Usually they finish uncapping all the cells in a day or two. A busy hive will uncap all the cells in a day or two. If the hive is not so busy it may take longer. We have seen a not so busy hive take a week to finish uncapping the cells on the outside frames. After they have uncapped the cells they will begin the process of refilling the cells with honey - leah

    • @SaraMiyamoto
      @SaraMiyamoto 6 ปีที่แล้ว +90

      Sky Walker, that's why they suggest waiting for the cells to all be capped. Honey is very watery when the bees first put it in a cell. They then spend time fanning it with their wings in the warm hive, which evaporates out most of the water. The bees won't cap it until they're happy with the consistency of the honey. So if the bees have capped it, the honey is ready.

    • @skywalker2837
      @skywalker2837 6 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Sakura Miyamoto yeah, but how would you know if all the cells are capped, you really can't see inner honey cells from the outside and to make it worse, bees usually start capping honey from the sides so it might look like alls the cells are fully capped when it's actually not

      @@KiLLJoYTH-cam Well, they are bees, they do not have the most biggest and evolved brains out there and to them it just looks like they have more space for honey. Even if we did not take their honey, bees have a bad habit of making so much of it, that they themselves can't consume all, so the honey that is left will eventually crystallize and become unusable, so the bees just go "Oh well, time to make more storage space!" without even cleaning the previous mess, meaning that their hives will just keep growing and the honey they do not consume will just keep crystallizing, meaning needing to make more space etc etc... Bees will just keep doing what they were born to do, they do not have any higher thoughts about it like us humans, so they don't really care that they keep doing work for nothing, doing said work is their lives entire purpose after all. It could be worse for the bees, since there are plenty of other creatures out there that would simply destroy their entire nest to have their honey, us humans are more gentle about it, taking it without making them lose their home and then having to use time and effort to rebuild it, while also of course making sure they do have enough for themselves to consume, both parties benefit from this arrangement. Humans get some honey and the bees have a safe home to be in and making sure that the nest itself is healthy for their continued existence.

      Salene Brom It seems that way but the more I review it the more pitfalls I see with it. If you are not in a rush for the honey and are willing to leave it long past when you THINK it is ready then this would be good. But from what I have researched it, you can not tell when they come is fully filled and properly aged without still taking it out.
      It's a very expensive learning hive if leaving the bees alone is more important than getting the honey.

    • @jo-han
      @jo-han 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Tom Leeds In that case don't buy the complete hive. Get a cheaper learning hive locally or build one yourselves. Some wood, a saw, some screws and a screwdrive is probably al you need. And if inexperienced just some perseverance in adjusting and fixing your build. An existing hive is easy to adjust to fit some flowframes. Then you only have to order 3 or 4 flowframes and put it in your hive. And even that you could decide on later when you've succeeded with your first trials :).

      +jo han wtf? Why would anyone waste their time building your own hives when you can buy boxes for $25, bottom board $18, lids $15 flat packed, frames are $2 wired, excluder $10. Comb you buy per sheet... Making hives yourself is not easy
      But you’re right the flow frames can fit into modified standard boxes.

    My mom got into beekeeping with these flow hives. They are really nifty. Bees in general are also surprisingly easy to work with.

      + liljiljana as I understand it they were paid for the invention... this was crowd funded at just under 12.5 million I'd say that should cover any invention costs... don't get me wrong they should make a profit!!! Personally I think there price is a to high but I have no idea what their costs are. Sadly with my income I don't know if I'll be able to afford one, till the price comes down a bit but I can't get bee's till next year at the absolute earliest anyways...

      Hi Kenneth, we realise that our Flow Hive is a big investment - some of this can be offset against the need to buy extraction equipment etc. Our Flow Frames are available separately in sets of 3, 4, 6 and 7. These are designed to be used with existing Langstroth deep hives and can be purchased with or without a super box.
      Here is a link to our instructions on how to modify a Super box to fit the Flow Frames - support.honeyflow.com/modifying-a-langstroth-box-for-flow-frames/
      Please email us via info@honeyflow.com with your location if you'd like to know what the most economical options are in your area - Leah.

    Curious what happens with the wax left behind. Do they realize that the honey is gone and recycle it or do you have to scrape it off?

      The bees remove the capping so the frames can be refilled :) - Isobella.
