I’ve been catching bass on the Jitter Bug for over 50 years now. It’s one of my favorite top water baits day or night. I also always have a modified one in the tackle box. You remove the belly hook and replace the tail hook with a frog hook. The cage style hook keeper keeps hooks facing up and it comes over emergent grass and pads like nobody’s business!
My best night was throwing a ZOOM Horney Toad. I wasn't getting any hits on the surface. I started to let them sink with a slow retrive, and the bass were hammering them. Great video, Matt. Thanks 👊👍
Around here in the summer our water's are crowded. So, I have done my share of night fishing. I don't do as much now because I'm older. When I do, I stay close to where I launch my boat. Berkley 10" Power Worm black is a favorite. Happy Fathers' Day !!
Nice intro to night fishing. After years of night tournaments (4 time aoy) here are some of the tricks I have learned. BLACK LIGHTS and Fluorescent lines are killer awesome. Some of the best baits would be from Berkley Maxscent the king worm, Chigger craw and the Critter Hawg (discontinued unless you go to japan portal) in Junebug, Black and Blue or here's a secret Sapphire. Also the Berkley Maxscent chunk trailers for your jigs. Not to discount Net bait Paca craws in the same colors. I tend to stay away from treble hooks at night the risk of hooking one's self or a fishing partners goes way up in the dark. A good head lamp bug spray and a bug head net like fly fisherman use is also a God send when you have a light on at night and your trying to tie a lure or unhooking a fish. Also Chatter baits work well when spinner baits won't but don't forget the frog at night can be dynamite especially around grass and shoreline bushes. You may not think it but on full moon nights green pumpkin and natural colors can wook just as well especially in clear water. And some of the best fishing can be between 1am and daylight before the jet skiers wake up LOL. Thanks for all the content keep up the great work!!
I’ve been using the Jitterbug( and Hula Popper) for over 60 years and I started because my Dad had a giant metal/with trays tackle box full of Arborgast and Heddon lures. I caught a huge water moccasin on a black Jitterbug and hundreds of bass and I will be using one next week,(full moon) when I got night fishing 😜🍀🎣🍀
I’m in the S/W corner of Arizona , I think we had a cool 108* It can get into the 110 plus a max out 120-ish. Yes nights are definitely a great option for fishing . I’ve said before in a topwater guy. Also like square bills , but keep in mind trebble hooks get tricky at night. I like early pre light 3am ish to frist light. Gotten some hawgs in that time slot. Thanks for taking time out of your day to make this video .
The Jitterbug has caught more night-time big bass than any other lure. Musky Jitterbugs in particular. We've covered it extensively at Bass FIshing Archives, and there are a couple of great episodes on the effectiveness of the Jitterbug on the Big Bass Podcast. I just received a fantastic little booklet on night fishing written in 1940 by the great Cal Johnson. Night fishing is one of the most fun, exciting, memorable and effective times to be on the water, for sure. Great episode, Matt!
Night fishing is my jam. In central TX it’s crazy hot in the summer and the lakes are crazy busy during the day as well. I like the slobber knocker with the lake fork majic shad, a knocker style buzzbait, and a magnum worm on a Tx rig. Just out there fishing the best spots all by myself smashing giants and I don’t stay out too late. Usually home before midnight. Love it! ❤️
Happy Father's Day. One thing I love about summer. Not that many people on the water! I had lake to myself today! Caught few small bass & hooked into biggest bass of the year. Unfortunately it pulled off about halfway back to the kayak. It had to have been skin hooked or something. I had a solid hook set! I got a good look at her she every bit of 7-8 lbs. It stings! Last summer I caught all my biggest largemouth in heat of the day. I got that bite around 12:45 pm. It's hot here in southern SC!
My personal best smallmouth bass was caught at night on a rock flat on the susquehanna river with a squarebill kvd silent crank bait in sexy shad color
I love night fishing!!!! Owl story incoming! Matt did you know Great Grey Owls also actively feed at night? I learned that last year when one grabbed my NZ Crawler and flew off with it to be promptly hooked in the "very big talon". (Oh did I mention I fish out of a SeaEagle 285 inflatable. Puncture resistant and talon resistant are not the same.) After reeling said owl out of the sky, we both did some soul searching that night, and came to a peace agreement. I got the hook out and said I would never mention this to any other owls and he swam to shore, before flying off into the night. I told this to the guys at work and every time they run into an owl figure of any sort on a pick up they bring it back to the shop and hide it on a shelf or rack. 15,000 sq ft. of building and they are perched everywhere. 1 stupid owl and they never let you forget it! Happy Fathers Day!!!
Happy Father’s Day Matt. I got to fish with both of my kids this evening. Made my day! Hope you got to spend time with your kids. I’ve been wanting to do some night fishing. Been years since I did it. In fact I’ve only ever fished for crappie at night. I need to do some night fishing for bass soon. These summer days in Georgia are getting rough! 🥵
I be killing it carp fishing at night. Caught a ton of fish on my rods, but the buddy says I'm narcissistic when he caught nothing. Just use processed food. LOL.
Happy Father's Day Matt. Probably heading to Castlerock area next weekend and was just thinking about trying my luck at night. Thanks for the insights. Cheers, JJ
I do my best fishing& get my biggest bass when its july-august+ 90-100 degrees, slick+ sunny. Makes it alot easier for me to find bigger fish& get them to bite. I'd pass out after getting back from the farm; wake up 11or twelve, get on the water middle of day& fish till dinnertime. Giants in the middle of the day. My next touney should be 95-98 & sunny. I hope its' calm out too.- I'll find em'.
🍺It’s been years since I fished all night but I certainly routinely get back to shore/launch after dusk/night fall as well as start my day in darkness/early morning 🤠.
🍺I’m 3.1 lbs behind Hank. He is in 89th and I’m in 230th. Amazing how tight weights are. I have 7 fishing tomorrow . Hank is currently in 11th place over all. I picked Villa at Sam Rayburn, Jacob Wheeler at West Point and neither of them fished😂. I think Hank picked someone that didn’t show up either if it wasn’t for that he could be at the top.😳
Yep hank had martin villa pull out of the sam rayburn event so he didnt get any weight for that event. He's got 9 guys fishing tomorrow with 7 of the top 12! Only one that missed was Kyle Hall for him. Hopefully they finish strong tomorrow!
Thanks for the video, great content. What's the best time's for night fishing? 7 to 10, or 10 to 3am? Can you give me like a ballpark figure? Thanks in advance
According to your experience, in the summer, for night fishing, which moon is better? I know there other things to consider, but I prefer to keep it as simple as possible.

That Rapala is a collector's lure. They have retired that color.
Yep!
10" Black Rat wakebait at night....WARNING...Don't throw this if u have a weak heart
haha
I be killing it carp fishing at night. Caught a ton of fish on my rods, but the buddy says I'm narcissistic when he caught nothing. Just use processed food. LOL.
carp are a lot of fun!
Happy Father's Day Matt. Probably heading to Castlerock area next weekend and was just thinking about trying my luck at night. Thanks for the insights. Cheers, JJ
Have fun!
The old Gene Lerew salt craw is deadly and I've fished a lot at night. Bass can see extremely well at night I think.
They were good baits!
Happy Father's day 🎉. I put the old blue spinnerbait in my box again today, and I tied some forest green hairjigs on some size 2 tube jig heads
Happy Father's Day!

I love night fishing. I've considered exterior black lights for vision help. Is it a help or henderance?
Most like black lights
Don't forget frogs, either the floating popping frog or the horny toad style.
good call!
Happy father's day

I hear you. Its hard to night fish with kids.
I keep saying every year I'm gonna do more night fishing. I did a handful of times last summer.
big ones bite at night!
What time frame would you generally recommend? I’d love a video on more of the details on where to fish, what time and any other tips you might have.
I like the midnight window

@@MattStefanFishing 🤑Oh boy he’s going to be near the top of this event and certainly in the top 8 overall. Very impressive. Is Dad helping some?
Thanks for the video, great content.

usually has more to do with moon phases but 10 to 3 is a good period
According to your experience, in the summer, for night fishing, which moon is better? I know there other things to consider, but I prefer to keep it as simple as possible.
To many mosquitoes for me
they go away once the sun goes down
Chatter baits
they work too
👍👍👍👍👍
thanks for watching
